A comparative study is made of three tests, developed by James (1951), Welch (1951) and Brown & Forsythe (1974). James presented two methods of which only one is considered in this paper. It is shown that this method gives better control over the size than the other two tests. None of these methods is uniformly more powerful than the other two. In some cases the tests of James and Welch reject a false null hypothesis more often than the test of Brown & Forsythe, but there are also situations in which it is the other way around.

We conclude that for implementation in a statistical software package the very complicated test of James is the most attractive. A practical disadvantage of this method can be overcome by a minor modification.  相似文献

Abstract

The problem of testing equality of two multivariate normal covariance matrices is considered. Assuming that the incomplete data are of monotone pattern, a quantity similar to the Likelihood Ratio Test Statistic is proposed. A satisfactory approximation to the distribution of the quantity is derived. Hypothesis testing based on the approximate distribution is outlined. The merits of the test are investigated using Monte Carlo simulation. Monte Carlo studies indicate that the test is very satisfactory even for moderately small samples. The proposed methods are illustrated using an example.  相似文献

In some situations, for example in agriculture, biology, hydrology, and psychology, researchers wish to determine whether the relationship between response variable and predictor variables differs in two populations. In other words, we are interested in comparing two regression models for two independent datasets. In this work, we will use the parametric and nonparametric methods to establish hypothesis testing for the equality of two independent regression models. Then the simulation study is provided to investigate the performance of the proposed method.  相似文献

In this study, we develop a test based on computational approach for the equality of variances of several normal populations. The proposed method is numerically compared with the existing methods. The numeric results demonstrate that the proposed method performs very well in terms of type I error rate and power of test. Furthermore we study the robustness of the tests by using simulation study when the underlying data are from t, exponential and uniform distributions. Finally we analyze a real dataset that motivated our study using the proposed test.  相似文献

This paper provides necessary and sufficient conditions for a quadratic form in singular normal random variables to be distributed as a given linear combination of independent noncentral chi-square variables. Using this result, an extension of Cochran's theorem to quadratic forms of noncentral chi-square variables is derived.  相似文献

Many procedures exist for testing equality of means or medians to compare several independent distributions. However, the mean or median do not determine the entire distribution. In this article, we propose a new small-sample modification of the likelihood ratio test for testing the equality of the quantiles of several normal distributions. The merits of the proposed test are numerically compared with the existing tests—a generalized p-value method and likelihood ratio test—with respect to their sizes and powers. The simulation results demonstrate that proposed method is satisfactory; its actual size is very close to the nominal level. We illustrate these approaches using two real examples.  相似文献

Roy's union-intersection principle is used to develop a test procedure to test the equality of scale parameters of several exponential distributions. Upper five and one percent values of the test statistic for two and three exponential distributions are tabulated and an illustrative simulated example is qiven.  相似文献

A new generalized p-value method is proposed for testing the equality of coefficients of variation in k normal populations. Simulation studies show that the type I error probabilities are close to the nominal level. The proposed test is also compared with likelihood ratio test, modified Bennett's test and score test through Monte Carlo simulation, the results demonstrate that the generalized p-value method has satisfactory performance in terms of sizes and powers.  相似文献

In this paper we face the problem of testing the equality of two or more parameters of a multinomial distribution. We develop a likelihood ratio test and we consider an asymptotically equivalent Pearson's statistic. Moreover we develop an exact and a randomized test. Relationships between these tests are then discussed. The behaviour of these tests is studied by simulations. Results from two known tests developed for less general situations are compared to ours.  相似文献

Generalized variance is a measure of dispersion of multivariate data. Comparison of dispersion of multivariate data is one of the favorite issues for multivariate quality control, generalized homogeneity of multidimensional scatter, etc. In this article, the problem of testing equality of generalized variances of k multivariate normal populations by using the Bartlett's modified likelihood ratio test (BMLRT) is proposed. Simulations to compare the Type I error rate and power of the BMLRT and the likelihood ratio test (LRT) methods are performed. These simulations show that the BMLRT method has a better chi-square approximation under the null hypothesis. Finally, a practical example is given.  相似文献

When testing the equality of the means from two independent normally distributed populations given that the variances of the two populations are unknown but assumed equal, the classical two-sample t-test is recommended. If the underlying population distributions are normal with unequal and unknown variances, either Welch's t-statistic or Satterthwaite's Approximate F-test is suggested. However, Welch's procedure is non-robust under most non-normal distributions. There is a variable tolerance level around the strict assumptions of data independence, homogeneity of variances and normality of the distributions. Few textbooks offer alternatives when one or more of the underlying assumptions are not defensible.  相似文献

Data in the form of proportions with extra-dispersion (over/under) arise in many biomedical, epidemiological, and toxicological applications. In some situations, two samples of data in the form of proportions with extra-dispersion arise in which the problem is to test the equality of the proportions in the two groups with unspecified and possibly unequal extra-dispersion parameters. This problem is analogous to the traditional Behrens-Fisher problem in which two normal population means with possibly unequal variances are compared. To deal with this problem we develop eight tests and compare them in terms of empirical size and power, using a simulation study. Simulations show that a C(α) test based on extended quasi-likelihood estimates of the nuisance parameters holds nominal level most effectively (close to the nominal level) and it is at least as powerful as any other statistic that is not liberal. It has the simplest formula, is based on estimates of the nuisance parameters only under the null hypothesis, and is easiest to calculate. Also, it is robust in the sense that no distributional assumption is required to develop this statistic.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In some situations, for example, in biology or psychology studies, we wish to determine whether the linear relationship between response variable and predictor variables differs in two populations. The analysis of the covariance (ANCOVA) or, equivalently, the partial F-test approaches are the commonly used methods. In this study, the asymptotic distribution for the difference between two independent regression coefficients was established. The proposed method was used to derive the asymptotic confidence set for the difference between coefficients and hypothesis testing for the equality of the two regression models. Then a simulation study was conducted to compare the proposed method with the partial F method. The performance of the new method was comparable with that of the partial F method.  相似文献

Power studies of tests of equality of covariance matrices of two p-variate complex normal populations σ1 = σ2 against two-sided alternatives have been made based on the following five criteria: (1) Roy's largest root, (2) Hotelling's trace, (4) Wilks' criterion and (5) Roy's largest and smallest roots. Some theorems on transformations and Jacobians in the two-sample complex Gaussian case have been proved in order to obtain a general theorem for establishing the local unbiasedness conditions connecting the two critical values for tests (1)–(5). Extensive unbiased power tabulations have been made for p=2, for various values of n1, n2, λ1 and λ2 where n1 is the df of the SP matrix from the ith sample and λ1 is the ith latent root of σ1σ-12 (i=1, 2). Equal tail areas approach has also been used further to compute powers of tests (1)–(4) for p=2 for studying the bias and facilitating comparisons with powers in the unbiased case. The inferences have been found similar to those in the real case. (Chu and Pillai, Ann. Inst. Statist. Math. 31.  相似文献

A test for equality of two normal means when the data consist of both paired and unpaired observations is proposed. The proposed test is compared with two other standard methods known in the literature with respect to the type I error rate and power using simulation results.  相似文献

A modification to Tiku's (1981) test, which may be seriously biased, is proposed. The modified test is only marginally biased if at all and is substantially more powerful. A ratio test based on Tiku’s (1967) modified likelihood function is also proposed, and shown to have power comparable to the power of the ratio test based on the likelihood function. The proposed ratio test is, however, much easier from a computational viewpoint.  相似文献

The present paper investigates the asymptotic behaviour of a studentized permutation test for testing equality of (Pearson) correlation coefficients in two populations. It is shown that this test is asymptotically of exact level and has the same power for contiguous alternatives as the corresponding asymptotic test. As a by-product we specify the assumptions needed for the validity of the permutation test suggested in Sakaori (2002). A small simulation study compares the finite sample properties of the considered tests.  相似文献

Two commonly used approximations for the inverse distribution function of the normal distribution are Schmeiser's and Shore's. Both approximations are based on a power transformation of either the cumulative density function (CDF) or a simple function of it. In this note we demonstrate, that if these approximations are presented in the form of the classical one-parameter Box-Cox transformation, and the exponent of the transformation is expressed as a simple function of the CDF, then the accuracy of both approximations may be considerably enhanced, without losing much in algebraic simplicity. Since both approximations are special cases of more general four-parameter systems of distributions, the results presented here indicate that the accuracy of the latter, when used to represent non-normal density functions, may also be considerably enhanced.  相似文献
