Investigators and epidemiologists often use statistics based on the parameters of a multinomial distribution. Two main approaches have been developed to assess the inferences of these statistics. The first one uses asymptotic formulae which are valid for large sample sizes. The second one computes the exact distribution, which performs quite well for small samples. They present some limitations for sample sizes N neither large enough to satisfy the assumption of asymptotic normality nor small enough to allow us to generate the exact distribution. We analytically computed the 1/N corrections of the asymptotic distribution for any statistics based on a multinomial law. We applied these results to the kappa statistic in 2×2 and 3×3 tables. We also compared the coverage probability obtained with the asymptotic and the corrected distributions under various hypothetical configurations of sample size and theoretical proportions. With this method, the estimate of the mean and the variance were highly improved as well as the 2.5 and the 97.5 percentiles of the distribution, allowing us to go down to sample sizes around 20, for data sets not too asymmetrical. The order of the difference between the exact and the corrected values was 1/N2 for the mean and 1/N3 for the variance.  相似文献

Abstract

Through simulation and regression, we study the alternative distribution of the likelihood ratio test in which the null hypothesis postulates that the data are from a normal distribution after a restricted Box–Cox transformation and the alternative hypothesis postulates that they are from a mixture of two normals after a restricted (possibly different) Box–Cox transformation. The number of observations in the sample is called N. The standardized distance between components (after transformation) is D = (μ2 ? μ1)/σ, where μ1 and μ2 are the component means and σ2 is their common variance. One component contains the fraction π of observed, and the other 1 ? π. The simulation results demonstrate a dependence of power on the mixing proportion, with power decreasing as the mixing proportion differs from 0.5. The alternative distribution appears to be a non-central chi-squared with approximately 2.48 + 10N ?0.75 degrees of freedom and non-centrality parameter 0.174N(D ? 1.4)2 × [π(1 ? π)]. At least 900 observations are needed to have power 95% for a 5% test when D = 2. For fixed values of D, power, and significance level, substantially more observations are necessary when π ≥ 0.90 or π ≤ 0.10. We give the estimated powers for the alternatives studied and a table of sample sizes needed for 50%, 80%, 90%, and 95% power.  相似文献

This article considers a simple test for the correct specification of linear spatial autoregressive models, assuming that the choice of the weight matrix Wn is true. We derive the limiting distributions of the test under the null hypothesis of correct specification and a sequence of local alternatives. We show that the test is free of nuisance parameters asymptotically under the null and prove the consistency of our test. To improve the finite sample performance of our test, we also propose a residual-based wild bootstrap and justify its asymptotic validity. We conduct a small set of Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the finite sample properties of our tests. Finally, we apply the test to two empirical datasets: the vote cast and the economic growth rate. We reject the linear spatial autoregressive model in the vote cast example but fail to reject it in the economic growth rate example. Supplementary materials for this article are available online.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the asymptotic distributions of MLE and UMVUE of a parametric functionh1, θ2) when sampling from a biparametric uniform distributionU1, θ2). We obtain both limiting distributions as a convolution of exponential distributions, and we observe that the limiting distribution of UMVUE is a shift of the limiting distribution of MLE.  相似文献

Epstein [Truncated life tests in the exponential case, Ann. Math. Statist. 25 (1954), pp. 555–564] introduced a hybrid censoring scheme (called Type-I hybrid censoring) and Chen and Bhattacharyya [Exact confidence bounds for an exponential parameter under hybrid censoring, Comm. Statist. Theory Methods 17 (1988), pp. 1857–1870] derived the exact distribution of the maximum-likelihood estimator (MLE) of the mean of a scaled exponential distribution based on a Type-I hybrid censored sample. Childs et al. [Exact likelihood inference based on Type-I and Type-II hybrid censored samples from the exponential distribution, Ann. Inst. Statist. Math. 55 (2003), pp. 319–330] provided an alternate simpler expression for this distribution, and also developed analogous results for another hybrid censoring scheme (called Type-II hybrid censoring). The purpose of this paper is to derive the exact bivariate distribution of the MLE of the parameter vector of a two-parameter exponential model based on hybrid censored samples. The marginal distributions are derived and exact confidence bounds for the parameters are obtained. The results are also used to derive the exact distribution of the MLE of the pth quantile, as well as the corresponding confidence bounds. These exact confidence intervals are then compared with parametric bootstrap confidence intervals in terms of coverage probabilities. Finally, we present some numerical examples to illustrate the methods of inference developed here.  相似文献

We consider a linear regression model with an unbalanced 1-fold nested error structure, where group effect and error are from nonnormal universes. The limiting distribution of the F-statistic in this model is derived, as the sample size is large and group sizes take values from a finite set of distinct integers. The result is used to approximate the F-distribution quantile and to test the significance of the random effect variance component. Results are also applicable to the F-statistic in the one-way random-effects model. The effects of departure from normality on the F-statistic distribution are given.  相似文献

In this paper, we construct a new ranked set sampling protocol that maximizes the Pitman asymptotic efficiency of the signed rank test. The new sampling design is a function of the set size and independent order statistics. If the set size is odd and the underlying distribution is symmetric and unimodal, then the new sampling protocol quantifies only the middle observation. On the other hand, if the set size is even, the new sampling design quantifies the two middle observations. This data collection procedure for use in the signed rank test outperforms the data collection procedure in the standard ranked set sample. We show that the exact null distribution of the signed rank statistic WRSS+ based on a data set generated by the new ranked set sample design for odd set sizes is the same as the null distribution of the simple random sample signed rank statistic WSRS+ based on the same number of measured observations. For even set sizes, the exact null distribution of WRSS+ is simulated.  相似文献

Probability plots allow us to determine whether a set of sample observations is distributed according to a theoretical distribution. Plotting positions are fundamental elements in statistics and, in particular, for the construction of probability plots. In this paper, a new plotting position to construct different probability plots, such as Q–Q Plot, P–P Plot and S–P Plot, is proposed. The proposed definition is based on the median of the ith order statistic of the theoretical distribution considered. The main feature of this plotting position formula is that it is independent of the theoretical distribution selected. Moreover, the procedure developed is ‘almost’ exact, reaching, without a high cost of time, an accuracy as great as we want, which avoids using approximations (proposed by other authors).  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article develops an adjusted empirical likelihood (EL) method for the additive hazards model. The adjusted EL ratio is shown to have a central chi-squared limiting distribution under the null hypothesis. We also evaluate its asymptotic distribution as a non central chi-squared distribution under the local alternatives of order n? 1/2, deriving the expression for the asymptotic power function. Simulation studies and a real example are conducted to evaluate the finite sample performance of the proposed method. Compared with the normal approximation-based method, the proposed method tends to have more larger empirical power and smaller confidence regions with comparable coverage probabilities.  相似文献

In this paper we examine the failure-censored sampling plans for the two–parameter exponential distri- bution based on m random samples, each of size n. The suggested procedure is based on exact results and only the first failure time of each sample is needed. The values of the acceptability constant are also tabulated for selected values of p α 1 p β 1, α and β. Further, a comparison of the proposed sampling plans with ordinary sampling plans using a sample of size mn is made. When compared to ordinary sampling plans, the proposed plan has an advantage in terms of shorter test-time and a saving of resources.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the Pitman measure of closeness of order statistics of two independent samples from the same distribution to population quantiles. We then derive various exact expressions of the probability closeness of order statistics from the X and Y samples. Some distribution-free results for the median of the sampling distribution are obtained. Exact and explicit expressions are presented for Uniform(?1, 1) and exponential distributions. Numerical results for illustrative purposes are also provided.  相似文献

We consider a nonparametric autoregression model under conditional heteroscedasticity with the aim to test whether the innovation distribution changes in time. To this end, we develop an asymptotic expansion for the sequential empirical process of nonparametrically estimated innovations (residuals). We suggest a Kolmogorov–Smirnov statistic based on the difference of the estimated innovation distributions built from the first ?ns?and the last n ? ?ns? residuals, respectively (0 ≤ s ≤ 1). Weak convergence of the underlying stochastic process to a Gaussian process is proved under the null hypothesis of no change point. The result implies that the test is asymptotically distribution‐free. Consistency against fixed alternatives is shown. The small sample performance of the proposed test is investigated in a simulation study and the test is applied to a data example.  相似文献

Abstract

Negative hypergeometric distribution arises as a waiting time distribution when we sample without replacement from a finite population. It has applications in many areas such as inspection sampling and estimation of wildlife populations. However, as is well known, the negative hypergeometric distribution is over-dispersed in the sense that its variance is greater than the mean. To make it more flexible and versatile, we propose a modified version of negative hypergeometric distribution called COM-Negative Hypergeometric distribution (COM-NH) by introducing a shape parameter as in the COM-Poisson and COMP-Binomial distributions. It is shown that under some limiting conditions, COM-NH approaches to a distribution that we call the COM-Negative binomial (COMP-NB), which in turn, approaches to the COM Poisson distribution. For the proposed model, we investigate the dispersion characteristics and shape of the probability mass function for different combinations of parameters. We also develop statistical inference for this model including parameter estimation and hypothesis tests. In particular, we investigate some properties such as bias, MSE, and coverage probabilities of the maximum likelihood estimators for its parameters by Monte Carlo simulation and likelihood ratio test to assess shape parameter of the underlying model. We present illustrative data to provide discussion.  相似文献

In this article, we propose a new class of semiparametric instrumental variable models with partially varying coefficients, in which the structural function has a partially linear form and the impact of endogenous structural variables can vary over different levels of some exogenous variables. We propose a three-step estimation procedure to estimate both functional and constant coefficients. The consistency and asymptotic normality of these proposed estimators are established. Moreover, a generalized F-test is developed to test whether the functional coefficients are of particular parametric forms with some underlying economic intuitions, and furthermore, the limiting distribution of the proposed generalized F-test statistic under the null hypothesis is established. Finally, we illustrate the finite sample performance of our approach with simulations and two real data examples in economics.  相似文献

We define the Wishart distribution on the cone of positive definite matrices and an exponential distribution on the Lorentz cone as exponential dispersion models. We show that these two distributions possess a property of exact decomposition, and we use this property to solve the following problem: given q samples (yil,… yiNj), i = l,…,q, from a N(μii,) distribution, test H1 = Σ2 = … = σq. Using the exact decomposition property, the classical test statistic for H, involving q parameters pi = (Ni, - l)/2, i = 1,…,q, is replaced by a sequence of q - l test statistics for the sequence of tests Hi,:σ12 = … =σi given that Hi-1 is true, i = 2,…,q. Each one of these test statistics involves two parameters only, p.i-1 = p1 + … + pi-1 and pi. We also use the exact decomposition property to test equality of the “direction parameters” for q sample points from the exponential distribution on the Lorentz cone. We give a table of critical values for the distribution on the three-dimensional Lorentz cone. Tables of critical values in higher dimensions can easily be computed following the same method as in dimension three.  相似文献

Under proper conditions, two independent tests of the null hypothesis of homogeneity of means are provided by a set of sample averages. One test, with tail probability P 1, relates to the variation between the sample averages, while the other, with tail probability P 2, relates to the concordance of the rankings of the sample averages with the anticipated rankings under an alternative hypothesis. The quantity G = P 1 P 2 is considered as the combined test statistic and, except for the discreteness in the null distribution of P 2, would correspond to the Fisher statistic for combining probabilities. Illustration is made, for the case of four means, on how to get critical values of G or critical values of P 1 for each possible value of P 2, taking discreteness into account. Alternative measures of concordance considered are Spearman's ρ and Kendall's τ. The concept results, in the case of two averages, in assigning two-thirds of the test size to the concordant tail, one-third to the discordant tail.  相似文献

Recently, exact confidence bounds and exact likelihood inference have been developed based on hybrid censored samples by Chen and Bhattacharyya [Chen, S. and Bhattacharyya, G.K. (1998). Exact confidence bounds for an exponential parameter under hybrid censoring. Communications in StatisticsTheory and Methods, 17, 1857–1870.], Childs et al. [Childs, A., Chandrasekar, B., Balakrishnan, N. and Kundu, D. (2003). Exact likelihood inference based on Type-I and Type-II hybrid censored samples from the exponential distribution. Annals of the Institute of Statistical Mathematics, 55, 319–330.], and Chandrasekar et al. [Chandrasekar, B., Childs, A. and Balakrishnan, N. (2004). Exact likelihood inference for the exponential distribution under generalized Type-I and Type-II hybrid censoring. Naval Research Logistics, 51, 994–1004.] for the case of the exponential distribution. In this article, we propose an unified hybrid censoring scheme (HCS) which includes many cases considered earlier as special cases. We then derive the exact distribution of the maximum likelihood estimator as well as exact confidence intervals for the mean of the exponential distribution under this general unified HCS. Finally, we present some examples to illustrate all the methods of inference developed here.  相似文献

In this note, we derive the exact distribution of S by using the method of generating function and BELL polynomials, where S = X1 + X2 + ??? + Xn, and each Xi follows the negative binomial distribution with arbitrary parameters. As a particular case, we also obtain the exact distribution of the convolution of geometric random variables.  相似文献

We consider the classic problem of interval estimation of a proportion p based on binomial sampling. The ‘exact’ Clopper–Pearson confidence interval for p is known to be unnecessarily conservative. We propose coverage adjustments of the Clopper–Pearson interval that incorporate prior or posterior beliefs into the interval. Using heatmap‐type plots for comparing confidence intervals, we show that the coverage‐adjusted intervals have satisfying coverage and shorter expected lengths than competing intervals found in the literature.  相似文献

Let {X 1, …, X n } and {Y 1, …, Y m } be two samples of independent and identically distributed observations with common continuous cumulative distribution functions F(x)=P(Xx) and G(y)=P(Yy), respectively. In this article, we would like to test the no quantile treatment effect hypothesis H 0: F=G. We develop a bootstrap quantile-treatment-effect test procedure for testing H 0 under the location-scale shift model. Our test procedure avoids the calculation of the check function (which is non-differentiable at the origin and makes solving the quantile effects difficult in typical quantile regression analysis). The limiting null distribution of the test procedure is derived and the procedure is shown to be consistent against a broad family of alternatives. Simulation studies show that our proposed test procedure attains its type I error rate close to the pre-chosen significance level even for small sample sizes. Our test procedure is illustrated with two real data sets on the lifetimes of guinea pigs from a treatment-control experiment.  相似文献
