Shewhart-type attribute charts are known to be inefficient for small changes in monitoring nonconformities. An alternative way is to use a time-weighted chart to monitor the time between events (TBE). We propose a one-sided Generally Weighted Moving Average control chart to monitor the time between events (TBE); regarded as the GWMA-TBE chart. To aid the implementation of the chart, the necessary design parameters are provided. An extensive performance analysis shows that the GWMA-TBE chart is better than the well-known EWMA and Shewhart charts at detecting very small to moderate changes. Finally, a summary and some conclusions are provided.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Control charts are effective tools for signal detection in both manufacturing processes and service processes. Much service data come from a process with variables having non-normal or unknown distributions. The commonly used Shewhart variable control charts, which depend heavily on the normality assumption, should not be properly used in such circumstances. In this paper, we propose a new variance chart based on a simple statistic to monitor process variance shifts. We explore the sampling properties of the new monitoring statistic and calculate the average run lengths (ARLs) of the proposed variance chart. Furthermore, an arcsine transformed exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) chart is proposed because the ARLs of this modified chart are more intuitive and reasonable than those of the variance chart. We compare the out-of-control variance detection performance of the proposed variance chart with that of the non-parametric Mood variance (NP-M) chart with runs rules, developed by Zombade and Ghute [Nonparametric control chart for variability using runs rules. Experiment. 2014;24(4):1683–1691], and the nonparametric likelihood ratio-based distribution-free exponential weighted moving average (NLE) chart and the combination of traditional exponential weighted moving average (EWMA) mean and EWMA variance (CEW) control chart proposed by Zou and Tsung [Likelihood ratio-based distribution-free EWMA control charts. J Qual Technol. 2010;42(2):174–196] by considering cases in which the critical quality characteristic has a normal, a double exponential or a uniform distribution. Comparison results showed that the proposed chart performs better than the NP-M with runs rules, and the NLE and CEW control charts. A numerical example of service times with a right-skewed distribution from a service system of a bank branch in Taiwan is used to illustrate the application of the proposed variance chart and of the arcsine transformed EWMA chart and to compare them with three existing variance (or standard deviation) charts. The proposed charts show better detection performance than those three existing variance charts in monitoring and detecting shifts in the process variance.  相似文献

Attributes sampling is an important inspection tool in areas like product quality control, service quality control or auditing. The classical item quality scheme of attributes sampling distinguishes between conforming and nonconforming items, and measures lot quality by the lot fraction nonconforming. A more refined quality scheme rates item quality by the number of nonconformities occurring on the item, e.g., the number of defective components in a composite product or the number of erroneous entries in an accounting record, where lot quality is measured by the average number of nonconformities occurring on items in the lot. Statistical models of sampling for nonconformities rest on the idealizing assumption that the number of nonconformities on an item is unbounded. In most real cases, however, the number of nonconformities on an item has an upper bound, e.g., the number of product components or the number of entries in an accounting record. The present study develops two statistical models of sampling lots for nonconformities in the presence of an upper bound a for the number of nonconformities on each single item. For both models, the statistical properties of the sample statistics and the operating characteristics of single sampling plans are investigated. A broad numerical study compares single sampling plans with prescribed statistical properties under the bounded and unbounded quality schemes. In a large number of cases, the sample sizes for the realistic bounded models are smaller than the sample sizes for the idealizing unbounded model.  相似文献

Control charts are widely used for monitoring quality characteristics of high-yield processes. In such processes where a large number of zero observations exists in count data, the zero-inflated binomial (ZIB) models are more appropriate than the ordinary binomial models. In ZIB models, random shocks occur with probability θ, and upon the occurrence of random shocks, the number of non-conforming items in a sample of size n follows the binomial distribution with proportion p. In the present article, we study in more detail the exponentially weighted moving average control chart based on ZIB distribution (ZIB-EWMA) and we also propose a new control chart based on the double exponentially weighted moving average statistic for monitoring ZIB data (ZIB-DEWMA). The two control charts are studied in detecting upward shifts in θ or p individually, as well as in both parameters simultaneously. Through a simulation study, we compare the performance of the proposed chart with the ZIB-Shewhart, ZIB-EWMA and ZIB-CUSUM charts. Finally, an illustrative example is also presented to display the practical application of the ZIB charts.  相似文献

Control charts are effective tools for signal detection in both manufacturing processes and service processes. Much service data come from a process with variables having nonnormal or unknown distributions. The commonly used Shewhart variable control charts, which depend heavily on the normality assumption, should not be properly used here. In this article, we propose an improved asymmetric EWMA mean chart based on a simple statistic to monitor process mean shift. We explored the sampling properties of the new monitoring statistic and calculated the average run lengths of the proposed asymmetric EWMA mean chart. We recommend the proposed improved asymmetric EWMA mean chart because the average run lengths of the modified charts are more accurate and reasonable than those of the five existed mean charts. A numerical example of service times with a right skewed distribution from a service system of a bank branch is used to illustrate the application of the improved asymmetric EWMA mean chart and to compare it with the five existing mean charts. The proposed chart showed better detection performance than those of the five existing mean charts in monitoring and detecting shifts in the process mean.  相似文献

A control chart is an ever-popular tool for monitoring the production process. The early detection of a process shift, if any, is the desire of the quality control personnel. In this article, an effective alternative control charting procedure has been developed for the monitoring of exponentially distributed quality characteristic using the double moving average combined with EWMA statistic. The performance of the proposed control chart is examined for different combinations of the shift constant, the EWMA smoothing parameter, the moving average span, and the target in-control average run lengths. It has been observed that the proposed control chart is more efficient in the detection of process shifts as compared to control chart suggested by Khoo and Wang for the same purpose. The proposed control chart is illustrated for practical usage with the help of a synthetic and a real dataset.  相似文献

The existing synthetic exponential control charts are based on the assumption of known in-control parameter. However, the in-control parameter has to be estimated from a Phase I dataset. In this article, we use the exact probability distribution, especially the percentiles, mean, and standard deviation of the conditional average run length (ARL) to evaluate the effect of parameter estimation on the performance of the Phase II synthetic exponential charts. This approach accounts for the variability in the conditional ARL values of the synthetic chart obtained by different practitioners. Since parameter estimation results in more false alarms than expected, we develop an exact method to design the adjusted synthetic charts with desired conditional in-control performance. Results of known and unknown in-control parameter cases show that the control limit of the conforming run length sub-chart of the synthetic chart should be as small as possible.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the problem of simultaneously monitoring the process mean and process variability of continuous production processes using combined Shewhart-cumulative score (cuscore) quality control procedures developed by Ncube and Woodall (1984). Two methods of approach are developed and their properties are investigated. One method uses two separate Shewhart-cuscore control charts, one for determining shifts in the process mean and the other for detecting shifts in process variability. The other method uses a single combined statistic which is sensitive to shifts in both the mean and the variance. Each procedure is compared to the corresponding Shewhart schemes. It will be shown by average run length calculations that the proposed Shewhart- cuscore schemes are considerably more efficient than the comparative Shewhart procedures for certain shifts in the process mean and process variability for the case when the underlying process control variable is assumed to be normally distributed.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce an alternative estimator of a population proportion from a dichotomous population when using randomized response sampling with continuous randomizing distributions. We also propose the alternative use of exponential randomizing densities. The estimator is obtained by method of moments and is compared with Franklin's (1989) estimator using normal and exponential distributions. The proposed estimator is more efficient than Franklin's (1989) estimator under suitable conditions for the two distributions.  相似文献

This Paper proposes a multivariate EWMA scheme that is alternative to the traditional EWMA-M. The distribution of the chart statistic is derived from Box quadratic form and the sensitivity of the chart is examined. The average run lengths of the M-EWMA scheme are numerically computed with the integral equation method. The exponential weight of 0.2 is found to be the optimal choice for the sensitive chart to detect assignable causes in the mean vector of processes.  相似文献

Although there exists an increasing interest in monitoring and diagnosing multistage processes through the recent years, this issue has been overlooked to a large extent in cascade processes where the quality characteristics are liable to outliers. The presence of outliers has a debilitating effect on the detect-ability of the traditional cause selecting control charts and thus makes them unreliable. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to provide a robust approach to quality control in multistage processes. It is assumed that the process consists of two stages and the historical data with regard to both dependent quality characteristics contain outliers. A robust fitting procedure based on compound-estimator is employed to build the relationship between the quality variables and a robust monitoring approach is presented. Subsequently, simulation studies are undertaken to assess the performance of the robust scheme by means of the average run length (ARL) criterion. It is shown that the proposed robust procedure can much faster detect diverse types of shift.  相似文献

This work presents an optimal value to be used in the power transformation to transform the exponential to normality for statistical process control (SPC) applications. The optimal value is found by minimizing the sum of absolute differences between two distinct cumulative probability functions. Based on this criterion, a numerical search yields a proposed value of 3.5142, so the transformed distribution is well approximated by the normal distribution. Two examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of using the transformation method and its applications in SPC. The transformed data are almost normally distributed and the performance of the individual charts is satisfactory. Compared to charts that use the original exponential data and probability control limits, the individual charts constructed using the transformed distribution are superior in appearance, ease of interpretation and implementation by practitioners.  相似文献

Time Between Events (TBE) charts were proposed to monitor the time between events occur based on exponential distribution, and have been shown to be more effective than monitoring the fraction non conforming directly. In this article, we consider monitoring the TBE data with CUSUM scheme by transformation. The idea behind it is to transform the TBE data to normal, and then apply the CUSUM scheme for the approximate normal data. Several simple transformation methods are examined. The calculation of Average Run Length (ARL) with Markov chain approach is described. Comparative studies on the ARL performance show that the transformed CUSUM is superior to the X-MR (Moving Range) chart with transformation, the Cumulative Quantity Control (CQC) chart, and have comparable performance with exponential CUSUM charts. The design procedures of optimal CUSUM chart are also presented. This study provides another possible alternative for monitoring TBE data with easy design procedures and relatively good performance.  相似文献

Shapiro and Wilk (1972) proposed a goodness of fit test for the exponential distribution. Carrie (1980) obtained an explicit expression of the null distribution of their test statistic W (n) E in a neighbourhood of its upper tail. His derivation uses a certain transformation involving the order statistics from the standard exponential distribution. In this paper we present an alternative derivation of this distribution using an elementary geometrical argument.  相似文献

Traditional control charts assume independence of observations obtained from the monitored process. However, if the observations are autocorrelated, these charts often do not perform as intended by the design requirements. Recently, several control charts have been proposed to deal with autocorrelated observations. The residual chart, modified Shewhart chart, EWMAST chart, and ARMA chart are such charts widely used for monitoring the occurrence of assignable causes in a process when the process exhibits inherent autocorrelation. Besides autocorrelation, one other issue is the unknown values of true process parameters to be used in the control chart design, which are often estimated from a reference sample of in-control observations. Performances of the above-mentioned control charts for autocorrelated processes are significantly affected by the sample size used in a Phase I study to estimate the control chart parameters. In this study, we investigate the effect of Phase I sample size on the run length performance of these four charts for monitoring the changes in the mean of an autocorrelated process, namely an AR(1) process. A discussion of the practical implications of the results and suggestions on the sample size requirements for effective process monitoring are provided.  相似文献

A generalization of the exponential distribution is presented. The generalization always has its mode at zero and yet allows for increasing, decreasing and constant hazard rates. It can be used as an alternative to the gamma, Weibull and exponentiated exponential distributions. A comprehensive account of the mathematical properties of the generalization is presented. A real data example is discussed to illustrate its applicability.  相似文献

The inverted generalized exponential distribution is defined as an alternative model for lifetime data. The existence of moments of this distribution is shown to hold under some restrictions. However, all the moments exist for the truncated inverted generalized exponential distribution and closed-form expressions for them are derived in this article. The distributional properties of this truncated distribution are studied. Maximum likelihood estimation method is discussed for the estimation of the parameters of the distribution both theoretically and empirically. In order to see the modeling performance of the distribution, two real datasets are analyzed.  相似文献

Standard multivariate control charts usually employ fixed sample sizes at equal sampling intervals to monitor a process. In this study, a multivariate exponential weighted moving average (MEWMA) chart with adaptive sample sizes is investigated. Performance measure of the adaptive-sample-size MEWMA chart is obtained through a Markov chain approach. The performance of the adaptive-sample-size MEWMA chart is compared with the fixed-sample-size control chart in terms of steady-state average run length for different magnitude of shifts in the process mean. It is shown that the adaptive-sample-size chart is more efficient than the fixed-sample-size MEWMA control chart in detecting shifts in the process mean.  相似文献
