A number of efficient computer codes are available for the simple linear L 1 regression problem. However, a number of these codes can be made more efficient by utilizing the least squares solution. In fact, a couple of available computer programs already do so.

We report the results of a computational study comparing several openly available computer programs for solving the simple linear L 1 regression problem with and without computing and utilizing a least squares solution.  相似文献

In multiple linear regression analysis each lower-dimensional subspace L of a known linear subspace M of ? n corresponds to a non empty subset of the columns of the regressor matrix. For a fixed subspace L, the C p statistic is an unbiased estimator of the mean square error if the projection of the response vector onto L is used to estimate the expected response. In this article, we consider two truncated versions of the C p statistic that can also be used to estimate this mean square error. The C p statistic and its truncated versions are compared in two example data sets, illustrating that use of the truncated versions may result in models different from those selected by standard C p .  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this article, we propose a more general criterion called Sp -criterion, for subset selection in the multiple linear regression Model. Many subset selection methods are based on the Least Squares (LS) estimator of β, but whenever the data contain an influential observation or the distribution of the error variable deviates from normality, the LS estimator performs ‘poorly’ and hence a method based on this estimator (for example, Mallows’ Cp -criterion) tends to select a ‘wrong’ subset. The proposed method overcomes this drawback and its main feature is that it can be used with any type of estimator (either the LS estimator or any robust estimator) of β without any need for modification of the proposed criterion. Moreover, this technique is operationally simple to implement as compared to other existing criteria. The method is illustrated with examples.  相似文献

The Akaike information criterion, AIC, and Mallows’ C p statistic have been proposed for selecting a smaller number of regressors in the multivariate regression models with fully unknown covariance matrix. All of these criteria are, however, based on the implicit assumption that the sample size is substantially larger than the dimension of the covariance matrix. To obtain a stable estimator of the covariance matrix, it is required that the dimension of the covariance matrix is much smaller than the sample size. When the dimension is close to the sample size, it is necessary to use ridge-type estimators for the covariance matrix. In this article, we use a ridge-type estimators for the covariance matrix and obtain the modified AIC and modified C p statistic under the asymptotic theory that both the sample size and the dimension go to infinity. It is numerically shown that these modified procedures perform very well in the sense of selecting the true model in large dimensional cases.  相似文献

The resistance of least absolute values (L1) estimators to outliers and their robustness to heavy-tailed distributions make these estimators useful alternatives to the usual least squares estimators. The recent development of efficient algorithms for L1 estimation in linear models has permitted their use in practical data analysis. Although in general the L1 estimators are not unique, there are a number of properties they all share. The set of all L1 estimators for a given model and data set can be characterized as the convex hull of some extreme estimators. Properties of the extreme estimators and of the L1-estimate set are considered.  相似文献

Multivariate likelihood ratio ordering of such general spacing vectors corresponding to two random samples is also considered. Next we give asymptotic expansions for (T2 i,…,T2 k) in two cases (i)ρ=Ik and (ii) k=2 by inverting the expanded characteristic function up to the orders n?2 and n?1, respectively. We introduce the t0 -increasing failure rate (IFR-t0) class, where the failure rate at age x+t0is greater then or equal to the failure rate at age x for x≥0. The dual class of t0- decreasing failure rate (DER-t0) is defined analogoualy.The relation between the IFR -t0class and other classes of life distributions is studied. Preservation and nonpreservation properties of the IFR-t0 and the DFR-t0 classes under various reliablity operation are presented. The concet of stochastic comparison is utilized to cheracterized the IFR-t 0 class and to suggest other classes of life distributions for aging.  相似文献

Optimal design theory deals with the assessment of the optimal joint distribution of all independent variables prior to data collection. In many practical situations, however, covariates are involved for which the distribution is not previously determined. The optimal design problem may then be reformulated in terms of finding the optimal marginal distribution for a specific set of variables. In general, the optimal solution may depend on the unknown (conditional) distribution of the covariates. This article discusses the D A -maximin procedure to account for the uncertain distribution of the covariates. Sufficient conditions will be given under which the uniform design of a subset of independent discrete variables is D A -maximin. The sufficient conditions are formulated for Generalized Linear Mixed Models with an arbitrary number of quantitative and qualitative independent variables and random effects.  相似文献

In this article, we obtain a Stein operator for the sum of n independent random variables (rvs) which is shown as the perturbation of the negative binomial (NB) operator. Comparing the operator with NB operator, we derive the error bounds for total variation distance by matching parameters. Also, three-parameter approximation for such a sum is considered and is shown to improve the existing bounds in the literature. Finally, an application of our results to a function of waiting time for (k1, k2)-events is given.  相似文献

To summarize a set of data by a distribution function in Johnson's translation system, we use a least-squares approach to parameter estimation wherein we seek to minimize the distance between the vector of "uniformized" oeder statistics and the corresponding vector of expected values. We use the software package FITTRI to apply this technique to three problems arising respectively in medicine, applied statistics, and civil engineering. Compared to traditional methods of distribution fitting based on moment matching, percentile matchingL 1 estimation, and L ? estimation, the least-squares technique is seen to yield fits of similar accuracy and to converge more rapidly and reliably to a set of acceptable parametre estimates.  相似文献

This study addresses the appropriate d 3 values for constructing range control charts (R-charts) when the distributions of the processes are the uniform, triangular, exponential, and Erlang. Comparisons of the range charts are based on Type I error probabilities obtained using simulations. The results reveal that inappropriate use of the d 3 values strongly affected the performance of the R-charts. Practitioners should be more careful in selecting suitable coefficients when using R-charts methods to process data. The distribution of the processes must be examined before the coefficients are chosen.  相似文献
