Sousa et al. (2010 Sousa , R. , Shabbir , J. , Real , P. C. , Gupta , S. ( 2010 ). Ratio estimation of the mean of a sensitive variable in the presence of auxiliary information . J. Statist. Theor. Prac. 4 ( 3 ): 495507 .[Taylor & Francis Online] [Google Scholar]) introduced a ratio estimator for the mean of a sensitive variable and showed that this estimator performs better than the ordinary mean estimator based on a randomized response technique (RRT). In this article, we introduce a regression estimator that performs better than the ratio estimator even for modest correlation between the primary and the auxiliary variables. The underlying assumption is that the primary variable is sensitive in nature but a non sensitive auxiliary variable exists that is positively correlated with the primary variable. Expressions for the Bias and MSE (Mean Square Error) are derived based on the first order of approximation. It is shown that the proposed regression estimator performs better than the ratio estimator and the ordinary RRT mean estimator (that does not utilize the auxiliary information). We also consider a generalized regression-cum-ratio estimator that has even smaller MSE. An extensive simulation study is presented to evaluate the performances of the proposed estimators in relation to other estimators in the study. The procedure is also applied to some financial data: purchase orders (a sensitive variable) and gross turnover (a non sensitive variable) in 2009 for a population of 5,336 companies in Portugal from a survey on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) usage.  相似文献

The continuous quadratic variation of asset return plays a critical role for high-frequency trading. However, the microstructure noise could bias the estimation of the continuous quadratic variation. Zhang et al. (2005 Zhang, L., Mykland, P., Ait-Sahalia, Y. (2005). A tale of two time scales: determining integrated volatility with noisy high-frequency data. J. Amer. Statist. Assoc. 100(472):13941411.[Taylor & Francis Online], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]) proposed a batch estimator for the continuous quadratic variation of high-frequency data in the presence of microstructure noise. It gives the estimates after all the data arrive. This article proposes a recursive version of their estimator that outputs variation estimates as the data arrive. Our estimator gives excellent estimates well before all the data arrive. Both real high-frequency futures data and simulation data confirm the performance of the recursive estimator.  相似文献

In this article we propose a modification of the recently introduced divergence information criterion (DIC, Mattheou et al., 2009 Mattheou , K. , Lee , S. , Karagrigoriou , A. ( 2009 ). A model selection criterion based on the BHHJ measure of divergence . Journal of Statistical Planning and Inference 139 : 128135 .[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]) for the determination of the order of an autoregressive process and show that it is an asymptotically unbiased estimator of the expected overall discrepancy, a nonnegative quantity that measures the distance between the true unknown model and a fitted approximating model. Further, we use Monte Carlo methods and various data generating processes for small, medium, and large sample sizes in order to explore the capabilities of the new criterion in selecting the optimal order in autoregressive processes and in general in a time series context. The new criterion shows remarkably good results by choosing the correct model more frequently than traditional information criteria.  相似文献

Here, we apply the smoothing technique proposed by Chaubey et al. (2007 Chaubey , Y. P. , Sen , A. , Sen , P. K. ( 2007 ). A new smooth density estimator for non-negative random variables. Technical Report No. 1/07. L. S. ( 1991 ). Estimation of the survival function for stationary associated processes . Statist. Probab. The asymptotic properties of the resulting estimators are studied and contrasted with some other competing estimators. A simulation study is carried out comparing the recent estimator based on the Poisson weights (Chaubey et al., 2011 Chaubey , Y. P. , Dewan , I. , Li , J. ( 2011 ). Smooth estimation of survival and density functions for a stationary associated process using poisson weights . Statist. Probab. Lett. 81 : 267276 .[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]) showing that the two estimators have comparable finite sample global as well as local behavior.  相似文献

In this article, we consider two different shared frailty regression models under the assumption of Gompertz as baseline distribution. Mostly assumption of gamma distribution is considered for frailty distribution. To compare the results with gamma frailty model, we consider the inverse Gaussian shared frailty model also. We compare these two models to a real life bivariate survival data set of acute leukemia remission times (Freireich et al., 1963 Freireich, E.J., Gehan, E., Frei, E., Schroeder, L.R., Wolman, I.J., Anbari, R., Burgert, E.O., Mills, S.D., Pinkel, D., Selawry, O.S., Moon, J.H., Gendel, B.R., Spurr, C.L., Storrs, R., Haurani, F., Hoogstraten, B., Lee, S. (1963). The effect of 6-mercaptopurine on the duration of steroid-induced remissions in acute leukemia: a model for evaluation of other potentially useful therapy. Blood 21:699716.[Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]). Analysis is performed using Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods. Model comparison is made using Bayesian model selection criterion and a well-fitted model is suggested for the acute leukemia data.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this article, we propose a generalized ratio-cum-product type exponential estimator for estimating population mean in stratified random sampling. Asymptotic expression of the bias and mean squared error of the proposed estimator are obtained. Asymptotic optimum estimator in the proposed estimator has been obtained with its mean squared error formula. Conditions under which the proposed estimator is more efficient than usual unbiased estimator, combined ratio and product type estimators, Singh et al. (2008 Singh, R., Kumar, M., Singh, R.D., Chaudhary, M.K. (2008). Exponential ratio type estimators in stratified random sampling. Presented in International Symposium on Optimisation and Statistics (I.S.O.S) at A.M.U., Dec. 2008, 2931, Aligarh, India. [Google Scholar]) estimators and Tailor and Chouhan (2014 Tailor, R., Chouhan, S. (2014). Ratio-cum-product type exponential estimator of finite population mean in stratified random sampling. Commun. Statist. Theor. Meth. 43:343354.[Taylor & Francis Online], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]) estimator are obtained. An empirical study has also been carried out.  相似文献

In many genetic analyses of dichotomous twin data, odds ratios have been used to test hypotheses on heritability and shared common environment effects of a given disease (Lichtenstein et al., 2000 Lichtenstein , P. , Holm , N. , Verkasalo , P. , Iliadou , A. , Kaprio , J. , Koskenvuo , M. , Pukkala , E. , Skytthe , A. , Hemminki , K. ( 2000 ). Environmental and heritable factors in the causation of cancer . New England Journal of Medicine 343 : 7885 .[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]; Ahlbom et al., 1997 Ahlbom , A. , Lichtenstein , P. , Malmström , H. , Feychting , M. , Hemminki , K. , Pedersen , N. L. ( 1997 ). Cancer in twins: genetic and nongenetic familial risk factors . Journal of the National Cancer Institute 89 : 28793 . [Google Scholar]; Ramakrishnan et al., 1992 Ramakrishnan , V. , Goldberg , J. , Henderson , W. , Elsen , S. , True , W. , Lyons , M. , Tsuang , M. ( 1992 ). Elementary methods for the analysis of dichotomous outcomes in unselected samples of twins . Genetic Epidemiology 9 : 273287 . [Google Scholar], 4). However, estimates of these two effects have not been dealt with in the literature. In epidemiology, the attributable fraction (AF), a function of the odds ratio and the prevalence of the risk factor has been used to describe the contribution of a risk factor to a disease in a given population (Leviton, 1973 Leviton , A. ( 1973 ). Definitions of attributable risk . American Journal of Epidemiology 98 : 231 . [Google Scholar]). In this article, we adapt the AF to quantify the heritability and the shared common environment. Twin data on cancer, gallstone disease and phobia are used to illustrate the applicability of the AF estimate as a measure of heritability.  相似文献

We adopt boosting for classification and selection of high-dimensional binary variables for which classical methods based on normality and non singular sample dispersion are inapplicable. Boosting seems particularly well suited for binary variables. We present three methods of which two combine boosting with the relatively classical variable selection methods developed in Wilbur et al. (2002 Wilbur , J. D. , Ghosh , J. K. , Nakatsu , C. H. , Brouder , S. M. , Doerge , R. W. ( 2002 ). Variable selection in high-dimensional multivariate binary data with application to the analysis of microbial community DNA fingerprints . Biometrics 58 : 378386 . [Google Scholar]). Our primary interest is variable selection in classification with small misclassification error being used as validation of proposed method for variable selection. Two of the new methods perform uniformly better than Wilbur et al. (2002 Wilbur , J. D. , Ghosh , J. K. , Nakatsu , C. H. , Brouder , S. M. , Doerge , R. W. ( 2002 ). Variable selection in high-dimensional multivariate binary data with application to the analysis of microbial community DNA fingerprints . Biometrics 58 : 378386 . [Google Scholar]) in one set of simulated and three real life examples.  相似文献

In this article, we introduce a new two-parameter estimator by grafting the contraction estimator into the modified ridge estimator proposed by Swindel (1976 Swindel , B. F. ( 1976 ). Good ridge estimators based on prior information . Commun. Statist. Theor. Meth. A5 : 10651075 .[Taylor & Francis Online], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]). This new two-parameter estimator is a general estimator which includes the ordinary least squares, the ridge, the Liu, and the contraction estimators as special cases. Furthermore, by setting restrictions Rβ = r on the parameter values we introduce a new restricted two-parameter estimator which includes the well-known restricted least squares, the restricted ridge proposed by Groß (2003 Groß , J. ( 2003 ). Restricted ridge estimation . Statist. Probab. Lett. 65 : 5764 .[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]), the restricted contraction estimators, and a new restricted Liu estimator which we call the modified restricted Liu estimator different from the restricted Liu estimator proposed by Kaç?ranlar et al. (1999 Kaç?ranlar , S. , Sakall?o?lu , S. , Akdeniz , F. , Styan , G. P. H. , Werner , H. J. ( 1999 ). A new biased estimator in linear regression and a detailed analysis of the widely-analysed dataset on Portland cement . Sankhya Ser. B., Ind. J. Statist. 61 : 443459 . [Google Scholar]). We also obtain necessary and sufficient condition for the superiority of the new two-parameter estimator over the ordinary least squares estimator and the comparison of the new restricted two-parameter estimator to the new two-parameter estimator is done by the criterion of matrix mean square error. The estimators of the biasing parameters are given and a simulation study is done for the comparison as well as the determination of the biasing parameters.  相似文献

The Significance Analysis of Microarrays (SAM; Tusher et al., 2001 Tusher , V. G. , Tibshirani , R. , Chu , G. ( 2001 ). Significance analysis of microarrys applied to the ionizing radiation response . Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences 98 : 51165121 .[Crossref], [PubMed], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]) method is widely used in analyzing gene expression data while controlling the FDR by using resampling-based procedure in the microarray setting. One of the main components of the SAM procedure is the adjustment of the test statistic. The introduction of the fudge factor to the test statistic aims at deflating the large value of test statistics due to the small standard error of gene-expression. Lin et al. (2008 Lin , D. , Shkedy , Z. , Burzykowski , T. , Göhlmann , H. W. H. , De Bondt , A. , Perera , T. , Geerts , T. , Bijnens , L. ( 2008 ). Significance analysis of microarray (SAM) for comparisons of several treatments with one control . Biometric Journal, MCP 50 ( 5 ): 801823 .[Crossref], [PubMed], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]) pointed out that the fudge factor does not effectively improve the power and the control of the FDR as compared to the SAM procedure without the fudge factor in the presence of small variance genes. Motivated by the simulation results presented in Lin et al. (2008 Lin , D. , Shkedy , Z. , Burzykowski , T. , Göhlmann , H. W. H. , De Bondt , A. , Perera , T. , Geerts , T. , Bijnens , L. ( 2008 ). Significance analysis of microarray (SAM) for comparisons of several treatments with one control . Biometric Journal, MCP 50 ( 5 ): 801823 .[Crossref], [PubMed], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]), in this article, we extend our study to compare several methods for choosing the fudge factor in the modified t-type test statistics and use simulation studies to investigate the power and the control of the FDR of the considered methods.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this article, the problem of estimation of the several proportions of two inter-dependent sensitive characteristics prevailing in a given population is considered. A new two-stage randomized response model has been proposed by extending Lee et al.’s (2013 Lee, C., Sedory, S., Singh, S (2013). Estimation at least seven measures of qualitative variables from a single sample using randomized response technique. Stat. Probab. Lett. 83(1):399409.[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]) model. The expressions for biases, variances, and mean square errors of different estimators have been provided. The relative efficiency comparisons of the proposed estimators has been made, numerically by considering the different practicable choices of the design parameters. It was observed that the proposed extended version performs efficiently than simple and crossed models of Lee et al. (2013 Lee, C., Sedory, S., Singh, S (2013). Estimation at least seven measures of qualitative variables from a single sample using randomized response technique. Stat. Probab. Lett. 83(1):399409.[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]).  相似文献

This paper addresses the problem of estimating a general parameter using information on an auxiliary variable X. We have suggested a class of exponential-type ratio estimators for the parameter and its properties are studied. It is identified that the estimators due to Upadhyaya et al. [Journal of Statistical Theory and Practice (2011), 5(2), 285–302] and Yadav and Kadilar [Revista Columbiana de Estadistica, (2013), 36(1), 145–152] are members of the proposed estimator. We have also shown that the suggested estimator is more efficient than the estimators of Upadhyaya et al. (2011 Upadhyaya, L.N., Singh, H.P., Chatterjee, S., Yadav, R. (2011). Improved ratio and product exponential type estimators. J. Stat. Theo. Pract. 5 (2): 285302.[Taylor &; Francis Online] [Google Scholar]) and Yadav and Kadilar (2013 Yadav, S.K., Kadilar, C. (2013). Improved exponential type ratio estimator of population variance. Revis. Colum. de Estadist. 36(1): 145152. [Google Scholar]). Numerical illustration is provided in support of the present study.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article investigates the robustness of the shrinkage Bayesian estimator for the relative potency parameter in the combinations of multivariate bioassays proposed in Chen et al. (1999 Chen, D.G., Carter, E.M., Hubert, J.J., Kim, P.T. (1999). Empirical Bayesian estimation for combinations of multivariate bioassays. Biometrics 55(4):10351043. [Google Scholar]), which incorporated prior information on the model parameters based on Jeffreys’ rules. This investigation is carried out for the families of t-distribution and Cauchy-distribution based on the characteristics of bioassay theory since the t-distribution approaches the normal distribution which is the most commonly used distribution in the applications of bioassay as the degrees of freedom increases and the t-distribution approaches the Cauchy-distribution as the degrees of freedom approaches 1 which is also an important distribution in bioassay. A real data is used to illustrate the application of this investigation. This analysis further supports the application of the shrinkage Bayesian estimator to the theory of bioassay along with the empirical Bayesian estimator.  相似文献

There is an emerging consensus in empirical finance that realized volatility series typically display long range dependence with a memory parameter (d) around 0.4 (Andersen et al., 2001 Andersen , T. G. , Bollerslev , T. , Diebold , F. X. , Labys , P. ( 2001 ). The distribution of realized exchange rate volatility . Journal of the American Statistical Association 96 ( 453 ): 4255 .[Taylor & Francis Online], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]; Martens et al., 2004 Martnes , M. , Van Dijk , D. , De Pooter , M. ( 2004 ). Modeling and forecasting S&P 500 volatility: Long memory, structural breaks and nonlinearity. Tinbergen Institute Discussion Paper 2004-067/4 . [Google Scholar]). The present article provides some illustrative analysis of how long memory may arise from the accumulative process underlying realized volatility. The article also uses results in Lieberman and Phillips (2004 Lieberman , O. , Phillips , P. C. B. ( 2004 ). Expansions for the distribution of the maximum likelihood estimator of the fractional difference parameter . Econometric Theory 20 ( 3 ): 464484 . [Google Scholar], 2005 Lieberman , O. , Phillips , P. C. B. ( 2005 ). Expansions for approximate maximum likelihood estimators of the fractional difference parameter . The Econometrics Journal 8 : 367379 . [Google Scholar]) to refine statistical inference about d by higher order theory. Standard asymptotic theory has an O(n ?1/2) error rate for error rejection probabilities, and the theory used here refines the approximation to an error rate of o(n ?1/2). The new formula is independent of unknown parameters, is simple to calculate and user-friendly. The method is applied to test whether the reported long memory parameter estimates of Andersen et al. (2001 Andersen , T. G. , Bollerslev , T. , Diebold , F. X. , Labys , P. ( 2001 ). The distribution of realized exchange rate volatility . Journal of the American Statistical Association 96 ( 453 ): 4255 .[Taylor & Francis Online], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]) and Martens et al. (2004 Martnes , M. , Van Dijk , D. , De Pooter , M. ( 2004 ). Modeling and forecasting S&P 500 volatility: Long memory, structural breaks and nonlinearity. Tinbergen Institute Discussion Paper 2004-067/4 . [Google Scholar]) differ significantly from the lower boundary (d = 0.5) of nonstationary long memory, and generally confirms earlier findings.  相似文献

New drug discovery in the pediatrics has dramatically improved survival, but with long- term adverse events. This motivates the examination of adverse outcomes such as long-term toxicity in a phase IV trial. An ideal approach to monitor long-term toxicity is to systematically follow the survivors, which is generally not feasible. Instead, cross-sectional surveys are conducted in Hudson et al. (2007 Hudson , M. M. , Rai , S. N. , Nunez , C. , Merchant , T. E. , Marina , N. M. , Zalamea , N. , Cox , C. , Phipps , S. , Pompeu , R. , Rosenthal , D. ( 2007 ). Noninvasive evaluation of late anthracycline cardiac toxicity in childhood cancer survivors . J. Clin. Oncol. 25 : 36353643 .[Crossref], [PubMed], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]), with one of the objectives to estimate the cumulative incidence rates along with specific interest in fixed-term (5 or 10 year) rates. We present inference procedures based on current status data to our motivating example with very interesting findings.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper presents the robust Bayesian inference based on the γ-divergence which is the same divergence as “type 0 divergence” in Jones et al. (2001 Jones, M. C., N. L. Hjort, I. R. Harris, and A. Basu. 2001. A comparison of related density-based minimum divergence estimators. Biometrika 88(3):86573.[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]) on the basis of Windham (1995 Windham, M. P. 1995. Robustifying model fitting. Journal of the Royal Statistical Society B57:599609. [Google Scholar]). It is known that the minimum γ-divergence estimator works well to estimate the probability density for heavily contaminated data, and to estimate the variance parameters. In this paper, we propose a robust posterior distribution against outliers based on the γ-divergence and show the asymptotic properties of the proposed estimator. We also discuss some robustness properties of the proposed estimator and illustrate its performances in some simulation studies.  相似文献

It is proved that under certain conditions the conditional least-squares estimator of the offspring mean for a sequence of nearly critical Ji?ina processes with immigration is consistent but not asymptotically normal and the conditional least-squares estimator of the immigration mean is not consistent. These results differ from the existing results in the case where the initial values are zero (see Ispány et al., 2005 Ispány , M. , Pap , G. , Zuijlen , M. V. ( 2005 ). Fluctuation limit of branching processes with immigration and estimation of the means . Adv. Appl. Probab. 37 : 523538 . [Google Scholar]).  相似文献

These two features are of primary importance for applications like CVA computations on credit derivatives (Assefa et al., 2011 Assefa , S. , Bielecki , T. R. , Crépey , S. , Jeanblanc , M. ( 2011 ).
