This paper extends the current literature on the variance-causality topic providing the coefficient restrictions ensuring variance noncausality within multivariate GARCH models with in-mean effects. Furthermore, this paper presents a new multivariate model, the exponential causality GARCH. By the introduction of a multiplicative causality impact function, the variance causality effects becomes directly interpretable and can therefore be used to detect both the existence of causality and its direction; notably, the proposed model allows for increasing and decreasing variance effects. An empirical application evidences negative causality effects between returns and volume of an Italian stock market index future contract.  相似文献

We introduce a new multivariate GARCH model with multivariate thresholds in conditional correlations and develop a two-step estimation procedure that is feasible in large dimensional applications. Optimal threshold functions are estimated endogenously from the data and the model conditional covariance matrix is ensured to be positive definite. We study the empirical performance of our model in two applications using U.S. stock and bond market data. In both applications our model has, in terms of statistical and economic significance, higher forecasting power than several other multivariate GARCH models for conditional correlations.  相似文献

Theoretical models of contagion and spillovers allow for asset-specific shocks that can be directly transmitted from one asset to another, as well as indirectly transmitted across uncorrelated assets through some intermediary mechanism. Standard multivariate Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (GARCH) models, however, provide estimates of volatilities and correlations based only on the direct transmission of shocks across assets. As such, spillover effects via an intermediary asset or market are not considered. In this article, a multivariate GARCH model is constructed that provides estimates of volatilities and correlations based on both directly and indirectly transmitted shocks. The model is applied to exchange rate and equity returns data. The results suggest that if a spillover component is observed in the data, the spillover augmented models provide significantly different volatility estimates compared to standard multivariate GARCH models.  相似文献

We derive several multivariate control charts to monitor the mean vector of multi-variate GARCH processes under the presence of changes, by means of maximizing the generalized likelihood ratio. This presentation is rounded up by a comparative performance study based on extensive Monte Carlo simulations. An empirical illustration shows how the obtained results can be applied to real data.  相似文献

This article investigates the impact of multivariate generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedastic (GARCH) errors on hypothesis testing for cointegrating vectors. The study reviews a cointegrated vector autoregressive model incorporating multivariate GARCH innovations and a regularity condition required for valid asymptotic inferences. Monte Carlo experiments are then conducted on a test statistic for a hypothesis on the cointegrating vectors. The experiments demonstrate that the regularity condition plays a critical role in rendering the hypothesis testing operational. It is also shown that Bartlett-type correction and wild bootstrap are useful in improving the small-sample size and power performance of the test statistic of interest.  相似文献

In this article, we investigate the effects of careful modeling the long-run dynamics of the volatilities of stock market returns on the conditional correlation structure. To this end, we allow the individual unconditional variances in conditional correlation generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (CC-GARCH) models to change smoothly over time by incorporating a nonstationary component in the variance equations such as the spline-GARCH model and the time-varying (TV)-GARCH model. The variance equations combine the long-run and the short-run dynamic behavior of the volatilities. The structure of the conditional correlation matrix is assumed to be either time independent or to vary over time. We apply our model to pairs of seven daily stock returns belonging to the S&P 500 composite index and traded at the New York Stock Exchange. The results suggest that accounting for deterministic changes in the unconditional variances improves the fit of the multivariate CC-GARCH models to the data. The effect of careful specification of the variance equations on the estimated correlations is variable: in some cases rather small, in others more discernible. We also show empirically that the CC-GARCH models with time-varying unconditional variances using the TV-GARCH model outperform the other models under study in terms of out-of-sample forecasting performance. In addition, we find that portfolio volatility-timing strategies based on time-varying unconditional variances often outperform the unmodeled long-run variances strategy out-of-sample. As a by-product, we generalize news impact surfaces to the situation in which both the GARCH equations and the conditional correlations contain a deterministic component that is a function of time.  相似文献

This article examines a family of three-parameter multivariate Laplace distributions ML p (a, μ, Σ) which is closed under constant shifts. Parameter vectors a and μ are called shift and shape parameter, respectively, positive definite p × p-matrix Σ is a scale parameter. The first three moments are derived and used for estimating the parameters. The behavior of the obtained estimates is explored in a simulation experiment.  相似文献

We show that persistence of conditional volatility in large samples could be exaggerated by the existence of structural breaks in the ARCH and GARCH parameters. Our results suggest that extreme persistence frequently observed in index volatility does not necessarily indicate the same level of persistence over the sample period.  相似文献

This article develops three recursive on-line algorithms, based on a two-stage least squares scheme for estimating generalized autoregressive conditionally heteroskedastic (GARCH) models. The first one, denoted by 2S-RLS, is an adaptation of the recursive least squares method for estimating autoregressive conditionally heteroskedastic (ARCH) models. The second and the third ones (denoted, respectively, by 2S-PLR and 2S-RML) are adapted versions of the pseudolinear regression (PLR) and the recursive maximum likelihood (RML) methods to the GARCH case. We show that the proposed algorithms give consistent estimators and that the 2S-RLS and the 2S-RML estimators are asymptotically Gaussian. These methods seem very adequate for modeling the sequential feature of financial time series, which are observed on a high-frequency basis. The performance of these algorithms is shown via a simulation study.  相似文献

Abstract.  The generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedastic (GARCH) model has been popular in the analysis of financial time series data with high volatility. Conventionally, the parameter estimation in GARCH models has been performed based on the Gaussian quasi-maximum likelihood. However, when the innovation terms have either heavy-tailed or skewed distributions, the quasi-maximum likelihood estimator (QMLE) does not function well. In order to remedy this defect, we propose the normal mixture QMLE (NM-QMLE), which is obtained from the normal mixture quasi-likelihood, and demonstrate that the NM-QMLE is consistent and asymptotically normal. Finally, we present simulation results and a real data analysis in order to illustrate our findings.  相似文献

In this article, a multivariate threshold varying conditional correlation (TVCC) model is proposed. The model extends the idea of Engle (2002 Engle , R. F. ( 2002 ). Dynamic conditional correlation: a simple class of multivariate generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity models . Journal of Business and Economic Statistics 20 ( 3 ): 339350 .[Taylor & Francis Online], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]) and Tse and Tsui (2002 Tse , Y. K. , Tsui , A. K. C. ( 2002 ). A multivariate GARCH model with time-varying correlations . Journal of Business and Economic Statistics , July 2002 , 20 ( 3 ): 351362 .[Taylor & Francis Online], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]) to a threshold framework. This model retains the interpretation of the univariate threshold GARCH model and allows for dynamic conditional correlations. Techniques of model identification, estimation, and model checking are developed. Some simulation results are reported on the finite sample distribution of the maximum likelihood estimate of the TVCC model. Real examples demonstrate the asymmetric behavior of the mean and the variance in financial time series and the ability of the TVCC model to capture these phenomena.  相似文献

In this article, we focus our attention on the general multivariate mixture model. We drive the relationship between the conditional and the unconditional reliability measures such as the hazard gradient, reversed hazard gradient, multivariate mean residual life, and multivariate reversed mean residual life. We present some sufficient conditions under which we can stochastically compare those vectors of general multivariate mixture models in the senses of various stochastic orderings.  相似文献

This study investigated the cross-markets price changes, volatility, and shock transmission mechanism among gasoline, crude oil, and diesel spot markets. An asymmetric time-varying volatility model is used to reveal the hidden dynamic shock transmission mechanism among the markets. An iterative optimization Newton–Raphson algorithm is used in the nonlinear estimation procedures by updating the outer product of the gradient vector. The estimated results are used in quantifying the cross-market risk, optimal portfolio holding, and hedging among the energy markets.  相似文献

Abstract. In this article, we study the quantile regression estimator for GARCH models. We formulate the quantile regression problem by a reparametrization method and verify that the obtained quantile regression estimator is strongly consistent and asymptotically normal under certain regularity conditions. We also present our simulation results and a real data analysis for illustration.  相似文献

A new covariance matrix estimator is proposed under the assumption that at every time period all pairwise correlations are equal. This assumption, which is pragmatically applied in various areas of finance, makes it possible to estimate arbitrarily large covariance matrices with ease. The model, called DECO, involves first adjusting for individual volatilities and then estimating correlations. A quasi-maximum likelihood result shows that DECO provides consistent parameter estimates even when the equicorrelation assumption is violated. We demonstrate how to generalize DECO to block equicorrelation structures. DECO estimates for U.S. stock return data show that (block) equicorrelated models can provide a better fit of the data than DCC. Using out-of-sample forecasts, DECO and Block DECO are shown to improve portfolio selection compared to an unrestricted dynamic correlation structure.  相似文献

We consider estimation of a class of power-transformed threshold GARCH models. When the power of the transformation is known, the asymptotic properties of the quasi-maximum likelihood estimator (QMLE) are established under mild conditions. Two sequences of least-squares estimators are also considered in the pure ARCH case, and it is shown that they can be asymptotically more accurate than the QMLE for certain power transformations. In the case where the power of the transformation has to be estimated, the asymptotic properties of the QMLE are proven under the assumption that the noise has a density. The finite-sample properties of the proposed estimators are studied by simulation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We introduce a nonparametric quantile predictor for multivariate time series via generalizing the well-known univariate conditional quantile into a multivariate setting for dependent data. Applying the multivariate predictor to predicting tail conditional quantiles from foreign exchange daily returns, it is observed that the accuracy of extreme tail quantile predictions can be greatly improved by incorporating interdependence between the returns in a bivariate framework. As a special application of the multivariate quantile predictor, we also introduce a so-called joint-horizon quantile predictor that is used to produce multi-step quantile predictions in one-go from univariate time series realizations. A simulation example is discussed to illustrate the relevance of the joint-horizon approach.  相似文献

This article studies the probabilistic structure and asymptotic inference of the first-order periodic generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (PGARCH(1, 1)) models in which the parameters in volatility process are allowed to switch between different regimes. First, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for a PGARCH(1, 1) process to have a unique stationary solution (in periodic sense) and for the existence of moments of any order. Second, using the representation of squared PGARCH(1, 1) model as a PARMA(1, 1) model, we then consider Yule-Walker type estimators for the parameters in PGARCH(1, 1) model and derives their consistency and asymptotic normality. The estimator can be surprisingly efficient for quite small numbers of autocorrelations and, in some cases can be more efficient than the least squares estimate (LSE). We use a residual bootstrap to define bootstrap estimators for the Yule-Walker estimates and prove the consistency of this bootstrap method. A set of numerical experiments illustrates the practical relevance of our theoretical results.  相似文献
