We present new algorithms for computing the exact distributions and p-values of quadratic t-sample distribution-free statistics of Kruskal–Wallis type. These algorithms are presented in terms of generating functions. We show that our algorithm also works for cases with ties and that it is much faster than existing algorithms. Moreover, we show how to use the results for the Kruskal–Wallis type statistics to compute the exact null distribution of the Chacko–Shorack statistic.  相似文献

We explore criteria that data must meet in order for the Kruskal–Wallis test to reject the null hypothesis by computing the number of unique ranked datasets in the balanced case where each of the m alternatives has n observations. We show that the Kruskal–Wallis test tends to be conservative in rejecting the null hypothesis, and we offer a correction that improves its performance. We then compute the number of possible datasets producing unique rank-sums. The most commonly occurring data lead to an uncommonly small set of possible rank-sums. We extend prior findings about row- and column-ordered data structures.  相似文献

A randomized procedure is described for constructing an exact test from a test statistic F for which the null distribution is unknown. The procedure is restricted to cases where F is a function of a random element U that has a known distribution under the null hypothesis. The power of the exact randomized test is shown to be greater in some cases than the power of the exact nonrandomized test that could be constructed if the null distribution of Fwere known.  相似文献

It is shown that the exact null distribution of the likelihood ratio criterion for sphericity test in the p-variate normal case and the marginal distribution of the first component of a (p ? 1)-variate generalized Dirichlet model with a given set of parameters are identical. The exact distribution of the likelihood ratio criterion so obtained has a general format for every p. A novel idea is introduced here through which the complicated exact null distribution of the sphericity test criterion in multivariate statistical analysis is converted into an easily tractable marginal density in a generalized Dirichlet model. It provides a direct and easiest method of computation of p-values. The computation of p-values and a table of critical points corresponding to p = 3 and 4 are also presented.  相似文献

A test for exponentiality based on progressively Type-II right censored spacings has been proposed recently by Balakrishnan et al. (2002). They derived the asymptotic null distribution of the test statistic. In this work, we utilize the algorithm of Huffer and Lin (2001) to evaluate the exact null probabilities and the exact critical values of this test statistic.  相似文献

A novel distribution-free k-sample test of differences in location shifts based on the analysis of kernel density functional estimation is introduced and studied. The proposed test parallels one-way analysis of variance and the Kruskal–Wallis (KW) test aiming at testing locations of unknown distributions. In contrast to the rank (score)-transformed non-parametric approach, such as the KW test, the proposed F-test uses the measurement responses along with well-known kernel density estimation (KDE) to estimate the locations and construct the test statistic. A practical optimal bandwidth selection procedure is also provided. Our simulation studies and real data example indicate that the proposed analysis of kernel density functional estimate (ANDFE) test is superior to existing competitors for fat-tailed or heavy-tailed distributions when the k groups differ mainly in location rather than shape, especially with unbalanced data. ANDFE is also highly recommended when it is unclear whether test groups differ mainly in shape or location. Liu and Singh (1993, 2006) introduced a depth‐based d‐variate extension of the nonparametric two sample scale test of Siegel and Tukey (1960). Liu and Singh (2006) generalized this depth‐based test for scale homogeneity of k ≥ 2 multivariate populations. Motivated by the work of Gastwirth (1965), we propose k sample percentile modifications of Liu and Singh's proposals. The test statistic is shown to be asymptotically normal when k = 2, and compares favorably with Liu and Singh (2006) if the underlying distributions are either symmetric with light tails or asymmetric. In the case of skewed distributions considered in this paper the power of the proposed tests can attain twice the power of the Liu‐Singh test for d ≥ 1. Finally, in the k‐sample case, it is shown that the asymptotic distribution of the proposed percentile modified Kruskal‐Wallis type test is χ2 with k ? 1 degrees of freedom. Power properties of this k‐sample test are similar to those for the proposed two sample one. The Canadian Journal of Statistics 39: 356–369; 2011 © 2011 Statistical Society of Canada  相似文献

Kolmogorov–Smirnov-type and Cramér–von Mises-type goodness-of-fit tests are proposed for the null hypothesis that the distribution of a random vector X is spherically symmetric. The test statistics utilize the fact that X has a spherical symmetric distribution if, and only if, the characteristic function of X is constant over surfaces of spheres centred at the origin. Both tests come in convenient forms that are straightforwardly applicable with the computer. The asymptotic null distribution of the test statistics as well as the consistency of the tests is investigated under general conditions. Since both the finite sample and the asymptotic null distribution depend on the unknown distribution of the Euclidean norm of X, a conditional Monte Carlo procedure is used to actually carry out the tests. Results on the behaviour of the test in finite-samples are included along with a real-data example.  相似文献

Birnbaum–Saunders (BS) distribution is widely used in reliability applications to model failure times. For several samples from possible different BS distributions, to prevent wrong conclusions in any further analysis, it is of importance to accompany a formal comparison for characteristic quantities of the distributions, including mean, quantile and reliability function difference. To this end, two test statistics, which are respectively based on the exact generalized p-value approach and the Delta method, are proposed and their behaviours are investigated. Simulation studies are carried out to examine the size and power performance of the newly proposed statistics. An interesting phenomenon is that in the finite sample simulations we conduct, the Delta method-based test almost uniformly outperforms the generalized p-value-based test although its sampling null distribution is simulated by Monte Carlo method. This might suggest that the sampling null distribution of the Delta method-based test statistic would have a fast convergence to its limit. The tests are also applied to analyse a real example on the fatigue life of 6061-T6 aluminium coupons for illustration.  相似文献

Using a new approach based on Meijer G-functions and computer simulation, we numerically compute the exact null distribution of the modified-likelihood ratio statistic used to test the hypothesis that several covariances matrices of normal distributions are equal. Small samples of different sizes are considered, and for the case of two matrices, we introduce a new test based on determinants, with the null distribution of its criterion also fully computable. Comparisons with published results show the accuracy of our approach, which is proved to be more flexible and adaptable to different cases.  相似文献

This paper proposes an approximation to the distribution of a goodness-of-fit statistic proposed recently by Balakrishnan et al. [Balakrishnan, N., Ng, H.K.T. and Kannan, N., 2002, A test of exponentiality based on spacings for progressively Type-II censored data. In: C. Huber-Carol et al. (Eds.), Goodness-of-Fit Tests and Model Validity (Boston: Birkhäuser), pp. 89–111.] for testing exponentiality based on progressively Type-II right censored data. The moments of this statistic can be easily calculated, but its distribution is not known in an explicit form. We first obtain the exact moments of the statistic using Basu's theorem and then the density approximants based on these exact moments of the statistic, expressed in terms of Laguerre polynomials, are proposed. A comparative study of the proposed approximation to the exact critical values, computed by Balakrishnan and Lin [Balakrishnan, N. and Lin, C.T., 2003, On the distribution of a test for exponentiality based on progressively Type-II right censored spacings. Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation, 73 (4), 277–283.], is carried out. This reveals that the proposed approximation is very accurate.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The Mack–Wolfe test is the most frequently used non parametric procedure for the umbrella alternative problem. In this paper, modifications of the Mack–Wolfe test are proposed for both known peak and unknown peak umbrellas. The exact mean and variance of the proposed tests in the null hypothesis are also derived. We compare these tests with some of the existing tests in terms of the type I error rate and power. In addition, a real data example is presented.  相似文献

The classical unconditional exact p-value test can be used to compare two multinomial distributions with small samples. This general hypothesis requires parameter estimation under the null which makes the test severely conservative. Similar property has been observed for Fisher's exact test with Barnard and Boschloo providing distinct adjustments that produce more powerful testing approaches. In this study, we develop a novel adjustment for the conservativeness of the unconditional multinomial exact p-value test that produces nominal type I error rate and increased power in comparison to all alternative approaches. We used a large simulation study to empirically estimate the 5th percentiles of the distributions of the p-values of the exact test over a range of scenarios and implemented a regression model to predict the values for two-sample multinomial settings. Our results show that the new test is uniformly more powerful than Fisher's, Barnard's, and Boschloo's tests with gains in power as large as several hundred percent in certain scenarios. Lastly, we provide a real-life data example where the unadjusted unconditional exact test wrongly fails to reject the null hypothesis and the corrected unconditional exact test rejects the null appropriately.  相似文献

Sign test using median ranked set samples (MRSS) is introduced and investigated. We show that, this test is more powerful than the sign tests based on simple random sample (SRS) and ranked set sample (RSS) for finite sample size. It is found that, when the set size of MRSS is odd, the null distribution of the MRSS sign test is the same as the sign test obtained by using SRS. The exact null distributions and the power functions, in case of finite sample sizes, of these tests are derived. Also, the asymptotic distribution of the MRSS sign tests are derived. Numerical comparison of the MRSS sign test power with the power of the SRS sign test and the RSS sign test is given. Illustration of the procedure, using real data set of bilirubin level in Jaundice babies who stay in neonatal intensive care is introduced.  相似文献

Abstract

In statistical hypothesis testing, a p-value is expected to be distributed as the uniform distribution on the interval (0, 1) under the null hypothesis. However, some p-values, such as the generalized p-value and the posterior predictive p-value, cannot be assured of this property. In this paper, we propose an adaptive p-value calibration approach, and show that the calibrated p-value is asymptotically distributed as the uniform distribution. For Behrens–Fisher problem and goodness-of-fit test under a normal model, the calibrated p-values are constructed and their behavior is evaluated numerically. Simulations show that the calibrated p-values are superior than original ones.  相似文献

For XN p (μ, Σ) testing H o:Σ = Σ 0, with Σ 0 known, relies at present on an approximation of the null-distribution of the likelihood ratio statistic.

We present here the exact null distribution and also its computation, hence providing a precise tool that can be used in small sample cases.  相似文献

Some distribution-free tests have been discussed in the literature with regard to the comparison of hazard rates of two distributions when the available samples are complete. We generalize here Kochar's [S.C. Kochar, A new distribution-free test for the equality of two failure rates, Biometrika 68 (1981), pp. 423–426] test statistic to the case when one available sample is progressively Type-II censored, and then derive its exact null distribution and examine its power properties by means of a Monte Carlo simulation study.  相似文献

The Wilcoxon—Mann—Whitney test enjoys great popularity among scientists comparing two groups of observations, especially when measurements made on a continuous scale are non-normally distributed. Triggered by different results for the procedure from two statistics programs, we compared the outcomes from 11 PC-based statistics packages. The findings were that the delivered p values ranged from significant to nonsignificant at the 5% level, depending on whether a large-sample approximation or an exact permutation form of the test was used and, in the former case, whether or not a correction for continuity was used and whether or not a correction for ties was made. Some packages also produced pseudo-exact p values, based on the null distribution under the assumption of no ties. A further crucial point is that the variant of the algorithm used for computation by the packages is rarely indicated in the output or documented in the Help facility and the manuals. We conclude that the only accurate form of the Wilcoxon—Mann—Whitney procedure is one in which the exact permutation null distribution is compiled for the actual data.  相似文献

Lachenbruch ( 1976 , 2001 ) introduced two‐part tests for comparison of two means in zero‐inflated continuous data. We are extending this approach and compare k independent distributions (by comparing their means, either overall or the departure from equal proportion of zeros and equal means of nonzero values) by introducing two tests: a two‐part Wald test and a two‐part likelihood ratio test. If the continuous part of the distributions is lognormal then the proposed two test statistics have asymptotically chi‐square distribution with $2(k-1)$ degrees of freedom. A simulation study was conducted to compare the performance of the proposed tests with several well‐known tests such as ANOVA, Welch ( 1951 ), Brown & Forsythe ( 1974 ), Kruskal–Wallis, and one‐part Wald test proposed by Tu & Zhou ( 1999 ). Results indicate that the proposed tests keep the nominal type I error and have consistently best power among all tests being compared. An application to rainfall data is provided as an example. Recently, exact confidence bounds and exact likelihood inference have been developed based on hybrid censored samples by Chen and Bhattacharyya [Chen, S. and Bhattacharyya, G.K. (1998). Exact confidence bounds for an exponential parameter under hybrid censoring. Communications in StatisticsTheory and Methods, 17, 1857–1870.], Childs et al. [Childs, A., Chandrasekar, B., Balakrishnan, N. and Kundu, D. (2003). Exact likelihood inference based on Type-I and Type-II hybrid censored samples from the exponential distribution. Annals of the Institute of Statistical Mathematics, 55, 319–330.], and Chandrasekar et al. [Chandrasekar, B., Childs, A. and Balakrishnan, N. (2004). Exact likelihood inference for the exponential distribution under generalized Type-I and Type-II hybrid censoring. Naval Research Logistics, 51, 994–1004.] for the case of the exponential distribution. In this article, we propose an unified hybrid censoring scheme (HCS) which includes many cases considered earlier as special cases. We then derive the exact distribution of the maximum likelihood estimator as well as exact confidence intervals for the mean of the exponential distribution under this general unified HCS. Finally, we present some examples to illustrate all the methods of inference developed here.  相似文献
