This paper addresses extended quasi-likelihood models where both the mean and the dispersion parameters vary across observations in a parameterized fashion. We derive formulae for the second-order biases of the maximum quasi-likelihood estimators of all parameters in these models. The practical use of such bias corrections is illustrated in a simulation study.  相似文献

The goal of this paper is to compare the performance of two estimation approaches, the quasi-likelihood estimating equation and the pseudo-likelihood equation, against model mis-specification for non-separable binary data. This comparison, to the authors’ knowledge, has not been done yet. In this paper, we first extend the quasi-likelihood work on spatial data to non-separable binary data. Some asymptotic properties of the quasi-likelihood estimate are also briefly discussed. We then use the techniques of a truncated Gaussian random field with a quasi-likelihood type model and a Gibbs sampler with a conditional model in the Markov random field to generate spatial–temporal binary data, respectively. For each simulated data set, both of the estimation methods are used to estimate parameters. Some discussion about the simulation results are also included.  相似文献

The count data model studied in the paper extends the Poisson model by al-lowing for overdispersion and serial correlation. Alternative approaches to esti-mate nuisance parameters, required for the correction of the Poisson maximum likelihood covariance matrix estimator and for a quasi-likelihood estimator, are studied. The estimators are evaluated by finite sample Monte Carlo experi-mentation. It is found that the Poisson maximum likelihood estimator with corrected covariance matrix estimators provide reliable inferences for longer time series. Overdispersion test statistics are wellbehaved, while conventional portmanteau statistics for white noise have too large sizes. Two empirical illustrations are included.  相似文献

In this paper, a noise subspace (NS) method is proposed for estimating frequencies of two-dimensional harmonics in the presence of zero-mean multiplicative and additive noise. The proposed method is based on a special structured data matrix, the singular vectors of the matrix and a special basis of the NS which is generated by some of these vectors. It is observed that the estimators are consistent and work quite well in terms of biases and mean square errors. It is also observed that the method can be used to estimate accurately the frequencies of the evanescent component of texture.  相似文献

Generalized additive mixed models are proposed for overdispersed and correlated data, which arise frequently in studies involving clustered, hierarchical and spatial designs. This class of models allows flexible functional dependence of an outcome variable on covariates by using nonparametric regression, while accounting for correlation between observations by using random effects. We estimate nonparametric functions by using smoothing splines and jointly estimate smoothing parameters and variance components by using marginal quasi-likelihood. Because numerical integration is often required by maximizing the objective functions, double penalized quasi-likelihood is proposed to make approximate inference. Frequentist and Bayesian inferences are compared. A key feature of the method proposed is that it allows us to make systematic inference on all model components within a unified parametric mixed model framework and can be easily implemented by fitting a working generalized linear mixed model by using existing statistical software. A bias correction procedure is also proposed to improve the performance of double penalized quasi-likelihood for sparse data. We illustrate the method with an application to infectious disease data and we evaluate its performance through simulation.  相似文献

The penalized quasi-likelihood (PQL) approach is the most common estimation procedure for the generalized linear mixed model (GLMM). However, it has been noticed that the PQL tends to underestimate variance components as well as regression coefficients in the previous literature. In this article, we numerically show that the biases of variance component estimates by PQL are systematically related to the biases of regression coefficient estimates by PQL, and also show that the biases of variance component estimates by PQL increase as random effects become more heterogeneous.  相似文献

In testing product reliability, there is often a critical cutoff level that determines whether a specimen is classified as failed. One consequence is that the number of degradation data collected varies from specimen to specimen. The information of random sample size should be included in the model, and our study shows that it can be influential in estimating model parameters. Two-stage least squares (LS) and maximum modified likelihood (MML) estimation, which both assume fixed sample sizes, are commonly used for estimating parameters in the repeated measurements models typically applied to degradation data. However, the LS estimate is not consistent in the case of random sample sizes. This article derives the likelihood for the random sample size model and suggests using maximum likelihood (ML) for parameter estimation. Our simulation studies show that ML estimates have smaller biases and variances compared to the LS and MML estimates. All estimation methods can be greatly improved if the number of specimens increases from 5 to 10. A data set from a semiconductor application is used to illustrate our methods.  相似文献

In this paper, a computationally efficient algorithm is proposed for estimating the parameters of two-dimensional (2-D) superimposed exponential signals in presence of independently and identically distributed (i.i.d.) zero-mean multiplicative and additive noise. It is observed that the estimator is consistent and works quite well in terms of biases and mean squared errors. Moreover, the algorithm is efficient when multiple 2-D frequencies pairs share a same 1-D frequency component and the estimators attain the same convergence rate with the least squares estimator (LSE) in presence of additive noise. Finally, it is observed that the algorithm can be used to estimate the frequencies of the evanescent component of texture accurately.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the superimposed exponential signals in zero-mean multiplicative and additive noise when all the noise are independently and identically distributed. We use a three-step iterative procedure to estimate the frequencies of the considered model. It is observed that the estimators are consistent and work quite well in terms of biases and mean square errors. Moreover, the convergence rate of the estimators attains O p (N ?3/2), which is the best convergence rate in the case of only additive noise and constant amplitude.  相似文献

In this paper, the estimation of average treatment effects is examined given that the propensity score is of a parametric form with some unknown parameters. Under the assumption that the treatment is ignorable given some observed characteristics, the MLEs for those unknown parameters in the probability assignment model have been achieved firstly and then three estimators have been defined by the inverse probability weighted, regression and imputation methods, respectively. All the estimators are shown asymptotically normal and more importantly, the substantial efficiency gains of the first two estimates have been obtained theoretically compared with the existing estimators in Hahn (1998) and Hirano et al. (2003), i.e., the inverse weighted probability estimator and the regression estimator have smaller asymptotic variances. Our simulation analysis verifies the theoretical results in terms of biases, SEs and MSEs.  相似文献

We investigate several estimators of the negative binomial (NB) dispersion parameter for highly stratified count data for which the statistical model has a separate mean parameter for each stratum. If the number of samples per stratum is small then the model is highly parameterized and the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) of the NB dispersion parameter can be biased and inefficient. Some of the estimators we investigate include adjustments for the number of mean parameters to reduce bias. We extend other estimators that were developed for the iid case, to reduce bias when there are many mean parameters. We demonstrate using simulations that an adjusted double extended quasi-likelihood estimator we proposed gives much improved estimates compared to the MLE. Adjusted extended quasi-likelihood and adjusted maximum likelihood estimators also give much-improved results. We illustrate the various estimators with stratified random bottom trawl survey data for cod (Gadus morhua) off the south coast of Newfoundland, Canada.  相似文献

In many longitudinal studies of recurrent events there is an interest in assessing how recurrences vary over time and across treatments or strata in the population. Usual analyses of such data assume a parametric form for the distribution of the recurrences over time. Here, we consider a semiparametric model for the analysis of such longitudinal studies where data are collected as panel counts. The model is a non-homogeneous Poisson process with a multiplicative intensity incorporating covariates through a proportionality assumption. Heterogeneity is accounted for in the model through subject-specific random effects. The key feature of the model is the use of regression splines to model the distribution of recurrences over time. This provides a flexible and robust method of relaxing parametric assumptions. In addition, quasi-likelihood methods are proposed for estimation, requiring only first and second moment assumptions to obtain consistent estimates. Simulations demonstrate that the method produces estimators of the rate with low bias and whose standardized distributions are well approximated by the normal. The usefulness of this approach, especially as an exploratory tool, is illustrated by analyzing a study designed to assess the effectiveness of a pheromone treatment in disturbing the mating habits of the Cherry Bark Tortrix moth.  相似文献

Suppose we observe an ergodic Markov chain on the real line, with a parametric model for the autoregression function, i.e. the conditional mean of the transition distribution. If one specifies, in addition, a parametric model for the conditional variance, one can define a simple estimator for the parameter, the maximum quasi-likelihood estimator. It is robust against misspecification of the conditional variance, but not efficient. We construct an estimator which is adaptive in the sense that it is efficient if the conditional variance is misspecified, and asymptotically as good as the maximum quasi-likelihood estimator if the conditional variance is correctly specified. The adaptive estimator is a weighted nonlinear least-squares estimator, with weights given by predictors for the conditional variance.  相似文献

In some applications, the quality of the process or product is characterized and summarized by a functional relationship between a response variable and one or more explanatory variables. Profile monitoring is a technique for checking the stability of the relationship over time. Existing linear profile monitoring methods usually assumed the error distribution to be normal. However, this assumption may not always be true in practice. To address this situation, we propose a method for profile monitoring under the framework of generalized linear models when the relationship between the mean and variance of the response variable is known. Two multivariate exponentially weighted moving average control schemes are proposed based on the estimated profile parameters obtained using a quasi-likelihood approach. The performance of the proposed methods is evaluated by simulation studies. Furthermore, the proposed method is applied to a real data set, and the R code for profile monitoring is made available to users.  相似文献

During recent years, analysts have been relying on approximate methods of inference to estimate multilevel models for binary or count data. In an earlier study of random-intercept models for binary outcomes we used simulated data to demonstrate that one such approximation, known as marginal quasi-likelihood, leads to a substantial attenuation bias in the estimates of both fixed and random effects whenever the random effects are non-trivial. In this paper, we fit three-level random-intercept models to actual data for two binary outcomes, to assess whether refined approximation procedures, namely penalized quasi-likelihood and second-order improvements to marginal and penalized quasi-likelihood, also underestimate the underlying parameters. The extent of the bias is assessed by two standards of comparison: exact maximum likelihood estimates, based on a Gauss–Hermite numerical quadrature procedure, and a set of Bayesian estimates, obtained from Gibbs sampling with diffuse priors. We also examine the effectiveness of a parametric bootstrap procedure for reducing the bias. The results indicate that second-order penalized quasi-likelihood estimates provide a considerable improvement over the other approximations, but all the methods of approximate inference result in a substantial underestimation of the fixed and random effects when the random effects are sizable. We also find that the parametric bootstrap method can eliminate the bias but is computationally very intensive.  相似文献

Quasi-likelihood was extended to right censored data to handle heteroscedasticity in the frame of the accelerated failure time (AFT) model. However, the assumption of known variance function in the quasi-likelihood for right censored data is usually unrealistic. In this paper, we propose a nonparametric quasi-likelihood by replacing the specified variance function with a nonparametric variance function estimator. This nonparametric variance function estimator is obtained by smoothing a function of squared residuals via local polynomial regression. The rate of convergence of the nonparametric variance function estimator and the asymptotic limiting distributions of the regression coefficient estimators are derived. It is demonstrated in simulations that for finite samples the proposed nonparametric quasi-likelihood method performs well. The new method is illustrated with one real dataset.  相似文献

It is common to fit generalized linear models with binomial and Poisson responses, where the data show a variability that is greater than the theoretical variability assumed by the model. This phenomenon, known as overdispersion, may spoil inferences about the model by considering significant parameters associated with variables that have no significant effect on the dependent variable. This paper explains some methods to detect overdispersion and presents and evaluates three well-known methodologies that have shown their usefulness in correcting this problem, using random mean models, quasi-likelihood methods and a double exponential family. In addition, it proposes some new Bayesian model extensions that have proved their usefulness in correcting the overdispersion problem. Finally, using the information provided by the National Demographic and Health Survey 2005, the departmental factors that have an influence on the mortality of children under 5 years and female postnatal period screening are determined. Based on the results, extensions that generalize some of the aforementioned models are also proposed, and their use is motivated by the data set under study. The results conclude that the proposed overdispersion models provide a better statistical fit of the data.  相似文献

Recurrent events are frequently encountered in biomedical studies. Evaluating the covariates effects on the marginal recurrent event rate is of practical interest. There are mainly two types of rate models for the recurrent event data: the multiplicative rates model and the additive rates model. We consider a more flexible additive–multiplicative rates model for analysis of recurrent event data, wherein some covariate effects are additive while others are multiplicative. We formulate estimating equations for estimating the regression parameters. The estimators for these regression parameters are shown to be consistent and asymptotically normally distributed under appropriate regularity conditions. Moreover, the estimator of the baseline mean function is proposed and its large sample properties are investigated. We also conduct simulation studies to evaluate the finite sample behavior of the proposed estimators. A medical study of patients with cystic fibrosis suffered from recurrent pulmonary exacerbations is provided for illustration of the proposed method.  相似文献

For the first time, a new class of generalized Weibull linear models is introduced to be competitive to the well-known generalized (gamma and inverse Gaussian) linear models which are adequate for the analysis of positive continuous data. The proposed models have a constant coefficient of variation for all observations similar to the gamma models and may be suitable for a wide range of practical applications in various fields such as biology, medicine, engineering, and economics, among others. We derive a joint iterative algorithm for estimating the mean and dispersion parameters. We obtain closed form expressions in matrix notation for the second-order biases of the maximum likelihood estimates of the model parameters and define bias corrected estimates. The corrected estimates are easily obtained as vectors of regression coefficients in suitable weighted linear regressions. The practical use of the new class of models is illustrated in one application to a lung cancer data set.  相似文献
