Empirical likelihood has attracted much attention in the literature as a nonparametric method. A recent paper by Lu & Peng (2002) [Likelihood based confidence intervals for the tail index. Extremes 5, 337–352] applied this method to construct a confidence interval for the tail index of a heavy‐tailed distribution. It turns out that the empirical likelihood method, as well as other likelihood‐based methods, performs better than the normal approximation method in terms of coverage probability. However, when the sample size is small, the confidence interval computed using the χ2 approximation has a serious undercoverage problem. Motivated by Tsao (2004) [A new method of calibration for the empirical loglikelihood ratio. Statist. Probab. Lett. 68, 305–314], this paper proposes a new method of calibration, which corrects the undercoverage problem.  相似文献

The family consisting of the distributions of products of two independent beta variables is extended to include cases where some of the parameters are not positive but negative or complex. This “beta product” distribution is expressible as a Meijer G function. An example (from risk theory) where such a distribution arises is given: an infinite sum of products of independent random variables is shown to have a distribution that is the product convolution of a complex-parameter beta product and an independent exponential. The distribution of the infinite sum is a new explicit solution of the stochastic equation X = (in law) B(X + C). Characterizations of some G distributions are also proved.  相似文献

Abstract

A number of approximate analysis techniques are based on matching moments of continuous time phase type (PH) distributions. This paper presents an explicit method to compose minimal order continuous time acyclic phase type (APH) distributions with a given first three moments. To this end we also evaluate the bounds for the first three moments of order n APH distributions (APH(n)). The investigations of these properties are based on a basic transformation, which extends the APH(n ? 1) class with an additional phase in order to describe the APH(n) class.  相似文献

Knowledge concerning the family of univariate continuous distributions with density function f and distribution function F defined through the relation f(x) = F α(x)(1 ? F(x))β, α, β ? , is reviewed and modestly extended. Symmetry, modality, tail behavior, order statistics, shape properties based on the mode, L-moments, and—for the first time—transformations between members of the family are the general properties considered. Fully tractable special cases include all the complementary beta distributions (including uniform, power law and cosine distributions), the logistic, exponential and Pareto distributions, the Student t distribution on 2 degrees of freedom and, newly, the distribution corresponding to α = β = 5/2. The logistic distribution is central to some of the developments of the article.  相似文献

Let Y be a response and, given covariate X,Y has a conditional density f(y | x, θ), where θ is a unknown p-dimensional vector of parameters and the marginal distribution of X is unknown. When responses are missing at random, with auxiliary information and imputation, we define an adjusted empirical log-likelihood ratio for the mean of Y and obtain its asymptotic distribution. A simulation study is conducted to compare the adjusted empirical log-likelihood and the normal approximation method in terms of coverage accuracies.  相似文献

In this paper, we apply the empirical likelihood method to heteroscedastic partially linear errors-in-variables model. For the cases of known and unknown error variances, the two different empirical log-likelihood ratios for the parameter of interest are constructed. If the error variances are known, the empirical log-likelihood ratio is proved to be asymptotic chi-square distribution under the assumption that the errors are given by a sequence of stationary α-mixing random variables. Furthermore, if the error variances are unknown, we show that the proposed statistic is asymptotically standard chi-square distribution when the errors are independent. Simulations are carried out to assess the performance of the proposed method.  相似文献

In this article, we use the empirical likelihood method to construct the confidence region for parameters in autoregressive model with martingale difference error. It is shown that the empirical log-likelihood ratio at the true parameter converges to the standard chi-square distribution. The simulation results suggest that the empirical likelihood method outperforms the normal approximation based method in terms of coverage probability.  相似文献

In this paper we use the empirical likelihood method to construct confidence interval for truncation parameter in random truncation model. The empirical log-likelihood ratio is derived and its asymptotic distribution is shown to be a weighted chi-square. Simulation studies are used to compare the confidence intervals based on empirical likelihood and those based on normal approximation. It is found that the empirical likelihood method provides improved confidence interval.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the application of the empirical likelihood method to a partially linear model with measurement errors in the non-parametric part. It is shown that the empirical log-likelihood ratio at the true parameters converges to the standard chi-square distribution. Furthermore, we obtain the maximum empirical likelihood estimate of the unknown parameter by using the empirical log-likelihood ratio function, and the resulting estimator is shown to be asymptotically normal. Some simulations and an application are conducted to illustrate the proposed method.  相似文献

Partially nonlinear models, as extensions of partially linear models are extensively used in statistical modeling. This paper considers the spline empirical log-likelihood ratio for testing serial correlation in partially nonlinear models. It is shown that the proposed empirical log-likelihood ratio converges to the standard chi-square distribution under the null hypothesis of no serial correlation. Some simulations are conducted to estimate the rejection probabilities under the null hypothesis and serial correlation. An example of application is also illustrated.  相似文献

Among reliability systems, one of the basic systems is a parallel system. In this article, we consider a parallel system consisting of n identical components with independent lifetimes having a common distribution function F. Under the condition that the system has failed by time t, with t being 100pth percentile of F(t = F ?1(p), 0 < p < 1), we characterize the probability distributions based on the mean past lifetime of the components of the system. These distributions are described in the form of a specific shape on the left of t and arbitrary continuous function on the right tail.  相似文献

For given continuous distribution functions F(x) and G(y) and a Pearson correlation coefficient ρ, an algorithm is provided to construct a sequence of continuous bivariate distributions with marginals equal to F(x) and G(y) and the corresponding correlation coefficient converges to ρ. The algorithm can be easily implemented using S-Plus or R. Applications are given to generate bivariate random variables with marginals including Gamma, Beta, Weibull, and uniform distributions.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the statistical inference for the varying-coefficient partially nonlinear model with additive measurement errors in the nonparametric part. The local bias-corrected profile nonlinear least-squares estimation procedure for parameter in nonlinear function and nonparametric function is proposed. Then, the asymptotic normality properties of the resulting estimators are established. With the empirical likelihood method, a local bias-corrected empirical log-likelihood ratio statistic for the unknown parameter, and a corrected and residual adjusted empirical log-likelihood ratio for the nonparametric component are constructed. It is shown that the resulting statistics are asymptotically chi-square distribution under some suitable conditions. Some simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed methods. The results indicate that the empirical likelihood method is superior to the profile nonlinear least-squares method in terms of the confidence regions of parameter and point-wise confidence intervals of nonparametric function.  相似文献

“Nonparametric” in the title is used to say that observations X 1,…,X n come from an unknown distribution F ∈ ? with ? being the class of all continuous and strictly increasing distribution functions. The problem is to estimate the quantile of a given order q ∈ (0,1) of the distribution F. The class ? of distributions is very large; it is so large that even X nq:n , where nq is an integer, may be very poor estimator of the qth quantile. To assess the performance of estimators no properties based on moments may be used: expected values of estimators should be replaced by their medians, their variances—by some characteristics of concentration of distributions around the median. If an estimator is median-biased for one of distributions, the bias of the estimator may be infinitely large for other distributions. In the note optimal estimators with respect to various criteria of optimality are presented. The pivotal function F(T) of the estimator T is introduced which enables us to apply the classical statistical approach.  相似文献

A new discrete family of probability distributions that are generated by the 3 F 2 function with complex parameters is presented. Some of the properties of this new family are studied as well as methods of estimation for its parameters. It affords considerable flexibility of shape which turns the distribution into an appropriate candidate for modeling data that cannot be adequately fitted by classical families with fewer parameters. Finally, three examples in the fields of Agriculture and Education are included in order to show the versatility and utility of this distribution.  相似文献

Mixtures of increasing failure rate distributions (IFR) can decrease at least in some intervals of time. Usually, this property can be observed asymptotically as t → ∞. This is due to the fact that the mixture failure rate is “bent down” compared with the corresponding unconditional expectation of the baseline failure rate, which was proved previously for some specific cases. We generalize this result and discuss the “weakest populations are dying first” property, which leads to the change in the failure rate shape. We also consider the problem of mixture failure rate ordering for the ordered mixing distributions. Two types of stochastic ordering are analyzed: ordering in the likelihood ratio sense and ordering in variances when the means are equal.  相似文献

It is demonstrated that integrals of the noncentral chi-square, noncentral F and noncentral T distributions can be evaluated on desk calculators. The same procedure can be used to compute probabilities for the distribution of the difference of two T-variables with equal degrees of freedom. The proposed method of computation can be used with any computer which yields probabilities for the chi-square and F distributions.  相似文献

This article focused on the definition and the study of a binary Bayesian criterion which measures a statistical agreement between a subjective prior and data information. The setting of this work is concrete Bayesian studies. It is an alternative and a complementary tool to the method recently proposed by Evans and Moshonov, [M. Evans and H. Moshonov, Checking for Prior-data conflict, Bayesian Anal. 1 (2006), pp. 893–914]. Both methods try to help the work of the Bayesian analyst, from preliminary to the posterior computation. Our criterion is defined as a ratio of Kullback–Leibler divergences; two of its main features are to make easy the check of a hierarchical prior and be used as a default calibration tool to obtain flat but proper priors in applications. Discrete and continuous distributions exemplify the approach and an industrial case study in reliability, involving the Weibull distribution, is highlighted.  相似文献

Statistics R a based on power divergence can be used for testing the homogeneity of a product multinomial model. All R a have the same chi-square limiting distribution under the null hypothesis of homogeneity. R 0 is the log likelihood ratio statistic and R 1 is Pearson's X 2 statistic. In this article, we consider improvement of approximation of the distribution of R a under the homogeneity hypothesis. The expression of the asymptotic expansion of distribution of R a under the homogeneity hypothesis is investigated. The expression consists of continuous and discontinuous terms. Using the continuous term of the expression, a new approximation of the distribution of R a is proposed. A moment-corrected type of chi-square approximation is also derived. By numerical comparison, we show that both of the approximations perform much better than that of usual chi-square approximation for the statistics R a when a ≤ 0, which include the log likelihood ratio statistic.  相似文献
