ABSTRACT

We develop a new score-driven model for the joint dynamics of fat-tailed realized covariance matrix observations and daily returns. The score dynamics for the unobserved true covariance matrix are robust to outliers and incidental large observations in both types of data by assuming a matrix-F distribution for the realized covariance measures and a multivariate Student's t distribution for the daily returns. The filter for the unknown covariance matrix has a computationally efficient matrix formulation, which proves beneficial for estimation and simulation purposes. We formulate parameter restrictions for stationarity and positive definiteness. Our simulation study shows that the new model is able to deal with high-dimensional settings (50 or more) and captures unobserved volatility dynamics even if the model is misspecified. We provide an empirical application to daily equity returns and realized covariance matrices up to 30 dimensions. The model statistically and economically outperforms competing multivariate volatility models out-of-sample. Supplementary materials for this article are available online.  相似文献

This article considers an approach to estimating and testing a new Kronecker product covariance structure for three-level (multiple time points (p), multiple sites (u), and multiple response variables (q)) multivariate data. Testing of such covariance structure is potentially important for high dimensional multi-level multivariate data. The hypothesis testing procedure developed in this article can not only test the hypothesis for three-level multivariate data, but also can test many different hypotheses, such as blocked compound symmetry, for two-level multivariate data as special cases. The tests are implemented with two real data sets.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Harter (1979) summarized applications of order statistics to multivariate analysis up through 1949. The present paper covers the period 1950–1959. References in the two papers were selected from the first and second volumes, respectively, of the author's chronological annotated bibliography on order statistics [Harter (1978, 1983)]. Tintner (1950a) established formal relations between four special types of multivariate analysis: (1) canonical correlation, (2) principal components, (3) weighted regression, and (4) discriminant analysis, all of which depend on ordered roots of determinantal equations. During the decade 1950–1959, numerous authors contributed to distribution theory and/or computational methods for ordered roots and their applications to multivariate analysis. Test criteria for (i) multivariate analysis of variance, (ii) comparison of variance–covariance matrices, and (iii) multiple independence of groups of variates when the parent population is multivariate normal were usually derived from the likelihood ratio principle until S. N. Roy (1953) formulated the union–intersection principles on which Roy & Bose (1953) based their simultaneous test and confidence procedure. Roy & Bargmann (1958) used an alternative procedure, called the step–down procedure, in deriving a test for problem (iii), and J. Roy (1958) applied the step–down procedure to problem (i) and (ii), Various authors developed and applied distribution theory for several multivariate distributions. Advances were also made on multivariate tolerance regions [Fraser & Wormleighton (1951), Fraser (1951, 1953), Fraser & Guttman (1956), Kemperman (1956), and Somerville (1958)], a criterion for rejection of multivariate outliers [Kudô (1957)], and linear estimators, from censored samples, of parameters of multivariate normal populations [Watterson (1958, 1959)]. Textbooks on multivariate analysis were published by Kendall (1957) and Anderson (1958), as well as a monograph by Roy (1957) and a book of tables by Pillai (1957).  相似文献

Recently, several new robust multivariate estimators of location and scatter have been proposed that provide new and improved methods for detecting multivariate outliers. But for small sample sizes, there are no results on how these new multivariate outlier detection techniques compare in terms of p n , their outside rate per observation (the expected proportion of points declared outliers) under normality. And there are no results comparing their ability to detect truly unusual points based on the model that generated the data. Moreover, there are no results comparing these methods to two fairly new techniques that do not rely on some robust covariance matrix. It is found that for an approach based on the orthogonal Gnanadesikan–Kettenring estimator, p n can be very unsatisfactory with small sample sizes, but a simple modification gives much more satisfactory results. Similar problems were found when using the median ball algorithm, but a modification proved to be unsatisfactory. The translated-biweights (TBS) estimator generally performs well with a sample size of n≥20 and when dealing with p-variate data where p≤5. But with p=8 it can be unsatisfactory, even with n=200. A projection method as well the minimum generalized variance method generally perform best, but with p≤5 conditions where the TBS method is preferable are described. In terms of detecting truly unusual points, the methods can differ substantially depending on where the outliers happen to be, the number of outliers present, and the correlations among the variables.  相似文献

A control procedure is presented in this article that is based on jointly using two separate control statistics in the detection and interpretation of signals in a multivariate normal process. The procedure detects the following three situations: (i) a mean vector shift without a shift in the covariance matrix; (ii) a shift in process variation (covariance matrix) without a mean vector shift; and (iii) both a simultaneous shift in the mean vector and covariance matrix as the result of a change in the parameters of some key process variables. It is shown that, following the occurrence of a signal on either of the separate control charts, the values from both of the corresponding signaling statistics can be decomposed into interpretable elements. Viewing the two decompositions together helps one to specifically identify the individual components and associated variables that are being affected. These components may include individual means or variances of the process variables as well as the correlations between or among variables. An industrial data set is used to illustrate the procedure.  相似文献

This work is intended to suggest modifications in the construction of the GFI index using robust methods for estimating the unrestricted sample covariance matrix, leading to new indices called GFI(MCD) and GFI(MVE). The validation of this proposal was made using Monte Carlo simulation methods, considering differences between the unrestricted sample covariance matrix and those imposed by the structural model, and different numbers of outliers generated by distributions with deviations from symmetry and excess kurtosis. It was concluded that for larger samples size (n ? 100), given that the outliers are from distributions that are symmetrical, the GFI(MCD) and GFI(MVE) present similar results, including samples with high percentages of outliers.  相似文献

The problem of whether seasonal decomposition should be used prior to or after aggregation of time series is quite old. We tackle the problem by using a state-space representation and the variance/covariance structure of a simplified one-component model. The variances of the estimated components in a two-series system are compared for direct and indirect approaches and also to a multivariate method. The covariance structure between the two time series is important for the relative efficiency. Indirect estimation is always best when the series are independent, but when the series or the measurement errors are negatively correlated, direct estimation may be much better in the above sense. Some covariance structures indicate that direct estimation should be used while others indicate that an indirect approach is more efficient. Signal-to-noise ratios and relative variances are used for inference.  相似文献

Abstract

There are three main problems in the existing procedures for detecting outliers in ARIMA models. The first one is the biased estimation of the initial parameter values that may strongly affect the power to detect outliers. The second problem is the confusion between level shifts and innovative outliers when the series has a level shift. The third problem is masking. We propose a procedure that keeps the powerful features of previous methods but improves the initial parameter estimate, avoids the confusion between innovative outliers and level shifts and includes joint tests for sequences of additive outliers in order to solve the masking problem. A Monte Carlo study and one example of the performance of the proposed procedure are presented.  相似文献

The multivariate maximum squared-radii (MMSR) statistic is commonly used to detect multivariate outliers. We characterize the general form of the nonnegative-definite observation covariance structure for which the distribution of the MMSR statistic is the sameas the distribution resulting from the usual independence covariance structure. Thus, we extend the work of Young, Seaman, and Meaux (1992), who have characterized the general form of the positive-definite independence-distribution-preserving (IDP) dependency structure for the MMSR statistic. We also improve upon the results of Younget al (1992) in that we give a more complete and simple proof of the characterization of the general positive-definite IDP covariance structure for the MMSR statistic.  相似文献

Abstract

In analyzing two multivariate normal data sets, the assumption about equality of covariance matrices is usually used as a default for doing subsequence inferences. If this equality doesn’t hold, later inferences will be more complex and usually approximate. If one detects some identical components between two decomposed non equal covariance matrices and uses this extra information, one expects that subsequence inferences can be more accurately performed. For this purpose, in this article we consider some statistical tests about the equality of components of decomposed covariance matrices of two multivariate normal populations. Our emphasis is on the spectral decomposition of these matrices. Hypotheses about the equalities of sizes, shapes, and set of directions as components of these two covariance matrices are tested by the likelihood ratio test (LRT). Some simulation studies are carried out to investigate the accuracy and power of the LRT. Finally, analyses of two real data sets are illustrated.  相似文献

This paper proposes a selection procedure to estimate the multiplicity of the smallest eigenvalue of the covariance matrix. The unknown number of signals present in a radar data can be formulated as the difference between the total number of components in the observed multivariate data vector and the multiplicity of the smallest eigenvalue. In the observed multivariate data, the smallest eigenvalues of the sample covariance matrix may in fact be grouped about some nominal value, as opposed to being identically equal. We propose a selection procedure to estimate the multiplicity of the common smallest eigenvalue, which is significantly smaller than the other eigenvalues. We derive the probability of a correct selection, P(CS), and the least favorable configuration (LFC) for our procedures. Under the LFC, the P(CS) attains its minimum over the preference zone of all eigenvalues. Therefore, a minimum sample size can be determined from the P(CS) under the LFC, P(CS|LFC), in order to implement our new procedure with a guaranteed probability requirement. Numerical examples are presented in order to illustrate our proposed procedure.  相似文献

Estimation of covariance components in the multivariate random-effect model with nested covariance structure is discussed. There are two covariance matrices to be estimated, namely, the between-group and the within-group covariance matrices. These two covariance matrices are most often estimated by forming a multivariate analysis of variance and equating mean square matrices to their expectations. Such a procedure involves taking the difference between the between-group mean square and the within-group mean square matrices, and often produces an estimated between-group covariance matrix that is not nonnegative definite. We present estimators of the two covariance matrices that are always proper covariance matrices. The estimators are the restricted maximum likelihood estimators if the random effects are normally distributed. The estimation procedure is extended to more complicated models, including the twofold nested and the mixed-effect models. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the use of the estimation procedure.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The analysis of a set of data consisting of N short (≤20 observations each) multivariate time series, where the observations are irregularly spaced and where observations for the different components of each multivariate series are observed at different times, is discussed. With the increased use of automatic recording devices in many fields, data such as these, which are of course samples from smooth response curves, are becoming more common. In this application, which was a clinical trial comparing two cements for use in hip replacement surgery, the key to the analysis was in recognizing that the interest lay in the degree to which the five curves representing a patient's vital signs deviated from baseline (i.e., normal for that patient) during surgery. This enabled the statisticians to define appropriate response variables. The analysis included Rosseeuw's (1984) technique for the identification of multivariate outliers and logistic regressions to identify any effects on the process producing the outliers due to treatment or covariates.  相似文献

Testing hypotheses about the structure of a covariance matrix for doubly multivariate data is often considered in the literature. In this paper the Rao's score test (RST) is derived to test the block exchangeable covariance matrix or block compound symmetry (BCS) covariance structure under the assumption of multivariate normality. It is shown that the empirical distribution of the RST statistic under the null hypothesis is independent of the true values of the mean and the matrix components of a BCS structure. A significant advantage of the RST is that it can be performed for small samples, even smaller than the dimension of the data, where the likelihood ratio test (LRT) cannot be used, and it outperforms the standard LRT in a number of contexts. Simulation studies are performed for the sample size consideration, and for the estimation of the empirical quantiles of the null distribution of the test statistic. The RST procedure is illustrated on a real data set from the medical studies.  相似文献

Linear mixed models are widely used when multiple correlated measurements are made on each unit of interest. In many applications, the units may form several distinct clusters, and such heterogeneity can be more appropriately modelled by a finite mixture linear mixed model. The classical estimation approach, in which both the random effects and the error parts are assumed to follow normal distribution, is sensitive to outliers, and failure to accommodate outliers may greatly jeopardize the model estimation and inference. We propose a new mixture linear mixed model using multivariate t distribution. For each mixture component, we assume the response and the random effects jointly follow a multivariate t distribution, to conveniently robustify the estimation procedure. An efficient expectation conditional maximization algorithm is developed for conducting maximum likelihood estimation. The degrees of freedom parameters of the t distributions are chosen data adaptively, for achieving flexible trade-off between estimation robustness and efficiency. Simulation studies and an application on analysing lung growth longitudinal data showcase the efficacy of the proposed approach.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Many financial decisions such as portfolio allocation, risk management, option pricing and hedge strategies are based on the forecast of the conditional variances, covariances and correlations of financial returns. Although the decisions depend on the forecasts covariance matrix little is known about effects of outliers on the uncertainty associated with these forecasts. In this paper we analyse these effects on the context of dynamic conditional correlation models when the uncertainty is measured using bootstrap methods. We also propose a bootstrap procedure to obtain forecast densities for return, volatilities, conditional correlation and Value-at-Risk that is robust to outliers. The results are illustrated with simulated and real data.  相似文献

Abstract

In this paper we present several goodness-of-fit tests for the centralized Wishart process, a popular matrix-variate time series model used to capture the stochastic properties of realized covariance matrices. The new test procedures are based on the extended Bartlett decomposition derived from the properties of the Wishart distribution and allows to obtain sets of independently and standard normally distributed random variables under the null hypothesis. Several tests for normality and independence are then applied to these variables in order to support or to reject the underlying assumption of a centralized Wishart process. In order to investigate the influence of estimated parameters on the suggested testing procedures in the finite-sample case, a simulation study is conducted. Finally, the new test methods are applied to real data consisting of realized covariance matrices computed for the returns on six assets traded on the New York Stock Exchange.  相似文献

Test statistics for checking the independence between the innovations of several time series are developed. The time series models considered allow for general specifications for the conditional mean and variance functions that could depend on common explanatory variables. In testing for independence between more than two time series, checking pairwise independence does not lead to consistent procedures. Thus a finite family of empirical processes relying on multivariate lagged residuals are constructed, and we derive their asymptotic distributions. In order to obtain simple asymptotic covariance structures, Möbius transformations of the empirical processes are studied, and simplifications occur. Under the null hypothesis of independence, we show that these transformed processes are asymptotically Gaussian, independent, and with tractable covariance functions not depending on the estimated parameters. Various procedures are discussed, including Cramér–von Mises test statistics and tests based on non‐parametric measures. The ranks of the residuals are considered in the new methods, giving test statistics which are asymptotically margin‐free. Generalized cross‐correlations are introduced, extending the concept of cross‐correlation to an arbitrary number of time series; portmanteau procedures based on them are discussed. In order to detect the dependence visually, graphical devices are proposed. Simulations are conducted to explore the finite sample properties of the methodology, which is found to be powerful against various types of alternatives when the independence is tested between two and three time series. An application is considered, using the daily log‐returns of Apple, Intel and Hewlett‐Packard traded on the Nasdaq financial market. Abstract

For several normal mean vectors restricted by a simple ordering with respect to a multivariate order, this article derives sufficient and necessary conditions for the restricted MLEs for both mean vectors and covariance matrix, and develops an ad hoc test. It establishes conditions for the bounds of the p-values. One example of such bound is given with some comments.  相似文献
