This paper is concerned with interval estimation of an autoregressive parameter when the parameter space allows for magnitudes outside the unit interval. In this case, intervals based on the least-squares estimator tend to require a high level of numerical computation and can be unreliable for small sample sizes. Intervals based on the asymptotic distribution of instrumental variable estimators provide an alternative. If the instrument is taken to be the sign function, the interval is centered at the Cauchy estimator and a large sample interval can be created by estimating the standard error of this estimator. The interval proposed in this paper avoids estimating this standard error and results in a small sample improvement in coverage probability. In fact, small sample coverage is exact when the innovations come from a normal distribution.  相似文献

A new estimator of the scale parameter by the optimum linear combination of absolute values of order statistics in symmetric location-scale families with known location parameter (without loss of generality assumed to be zero) from complete and Type II censored samples is introduced and is termed as optimum unbiased absolute estimator of the scale parameter. The new estimator of the scale parameter is compared with the corresponding best linear unbiased estimator (BLUE) in the rectangular and normal distributions. Generally it is found that the new estimator is more efficient than the BLUE.  相似文献

In the literature of point estimation, the Cauchy distribution with location parameter is often cited as an example for the failure of maximum-likelihood method and hence the failure of the likelihood principle in general. Contrary to the above notion, we prove that even in this case the likelihood equation has multiple roots and that the maximum-likelihood estimator (the global maximum) remains as an asymptotically optimal estimator in the Bahadur sense.  相似文献

In this paper, we construct a Bayes shrinkage estimator for the Rayleigh scale parameter based on censored data under the squared log error loss function. Risk-unbiased estimator is derived and its risk is computed. A Bayes shrinkage estimator is obtained when a prior point guess value is available for the scale parameter. Risk-bias of the Bayes shrinkage estimator is considered. A comparison between the proposed Bayes shrinkage estimator and the risk-unbiased estimator is provided using calculation of the relative efficiency. A numerical example is presented for illustrative and comparative purposes.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the maximum likelihood and Bayes estimation of the scale parameter of the half-logistic distribution based on a multiply type II censored sample. However, the maximum likelihood estimator(MLE) and Bayes estimator do not exist in an explicit form for the scale parameter. We consider a simple method of deriving an explicit estimator by approximating the likelihood function and discuss the asymptotic variances of MLE and approximate MLE. Also, an approximation based on the Laplace approximation (Tierney & Kadane, 1986) is used to obtain the Bayes estimator. In order to compare the MLE, approximate MLE and Bayes estimates of the scale parameter, Monte Carlo simulation is used.  相似文献

In the location-scale estimation problem, we study robustness properties of M-estimators of the scale parameter under unknown ?-contamination of a fixed symmetric unimodal error distribution F0. Within a general class of M-estimators, the estimator with minimax asymptotic bias is shown to lie within the subclass of α-interquantile ranges of the empirical distribution symmetrized about the sample median. Our main result is that as ? → 0, the limiting minimax asymptotic bias estimator is sometimes (e.g., when Fo is Cauchy), but not always, the median absolute deviation about the median. It is also shown that contamination in the neighbourhood of a discontinuity of the influence function of a minimax bias estimator can sometimes inflate the asymptotic variance beyond that achieved by placing all the ?-contamination at infinity. This effect is quantified by a new notion of asymptotic efficiency that takes into account the effect of infinitesimal contamination of the parametric model for the error distribution.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the problem of estimating the scale parameter of the inverse Rayleigh distribution based on general progressively Type-II censored samples and progressively Type-II censored samples. The pivotal quantity method is used to derive the estimator of the scale parameter. Besides, considering that the maximum likelihood estimator is tough to obtain for this distribution, we derive an explicit estimator of the scale parameter by approximating the likelihood equation with Taylor expansion. The interval estimation is also studied based on pivotal inference. Then we conduct Monte Carlo simulations and compare the performance of different estimators. We demonstrate that the pivotal inference is simpler and more effective. The further application of the pivotal quantity method is also discussed theoretically. Finally, two real data sets are analyzed using our methods.  相似文献

CORRECTING FOR KURTOSIS IN DENSITY ESTIMATION   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Using a global window width kernel estimator to estimate an approximately symmetric probability density with high kurtosis usually leads to poor estimation because good estimation of the peak of the distribution leads to unsatisfactory estimation of the tails and vice versa. The technique proposed corrects for kurtosis via a transformation of the data before using a global window width kernel estimator. The transformation depends on a “generalised smoothing parameter” consisting of two real-valued parameters and a window width parameter which can be selected either by a simple graphical method or, for a completely data-driven implementation, by minimising an estimate of mean integrated squared error. Examples of real and simulated data demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach, which appears suitable for a wide range of symmetric, unimodal densities. Its performance is similar to ordinary kernel estimation in situations where the latter is effective, e.g. Gaussian densities. For densities like the Cauchy where ordinary kernel estimation is not satisfactory, our methodology offers a substantial improvement.  相似文献

Based on a progressively type II censored sample, the maximum likelihood and Bayes estimators of the scale parameter of the half-logistic distribution are derived. However, since the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) and Bayes estimator do not exist in an explicit form for the scale parameter, we consider a simple method of deriving an explicit estimator by approximating the likelihood function and derive the asymptotic variances of MLE and approximate MLE. Also, an approximation based on the Laplace approximation (Tierney and Kadane in J Am Stat Assoc 81:82–86, 1986) and importance sampling methods are used for obtaining the Bayes estimator. In order to compare the performance of the MLE, approximate MLE and Bayes estimates of the scale parameter, we use Monte Carlo simulation.  相似文献

Ranked set sampling is a cost efficient sampling technique when actually measuring sampling units is difficult but ranking them is relatively easy. For a family of symmetric location-scale distributions with known location parameter, we consider a best linear unbiased estimator for the scale parameter. Instead of using original ranked set samples, we propose to use the absolute deviations of the ranked set samples from the location parameter. We demonstrate that this new estimator has smaller variance than the best linear unbiased estimator using original ranked set samples. Optimal allocation in the absolute value of ranked set samples is also discussed for the estimation of the scale parameter when the location parameter is known. Finally, we perform some sensitivity analyses for this new estimator when the location parameter is unknown but estimated using ranked set samples and when the ranking of sampling units is imperfect.  相似文献

Although there are a number of results available for the admissibility of the best translation equivariant estimator of the parameter, there is hardly any stated explicitly for the best scale equivariant estimator of the scale parameter. In this paper, we derive sufficient conditions for the admissibility of the scale parameter estimators and compara them. The derivations use the well known results due to Brown [1], Farrell [2], and Portnoy [3]. The loss function has been taken to be quadratic.  相似文献

The scaled (two-parameter) Type I generalized logistic distribution (GLD) is considered with the known shape parameter. The ML method does not yield an explicit estimator for the scale parameter even in complete samples. In this article, we therefore construct a new linear estimator for scale parameter, based on complete and doubly Type-II censored samples, by making linear approximations to the intractable terms of the likelihood equation using least-squares (LS) method, a new approach of linearization. We call this as linear approximate maximum likelihood estimator (LAMLE). We also construct LAMLE based on Taylor series method of linear approximation and found that this estimator is slightly biased than that based on the LS method. A Monte Carlo simulation is used to investigate the performance of LAMLE and found that it is almost as efficient as MLE, though biased than MLE. We also compare unbiased LAMLE with BLUE based on the exact variances of the estimators and interestingly this new unbiased LAMLE is found just as efficient as the BLUE in both complete and Type-II censored samples. Since MLE is known as asymptotically unbiased, in large samples we compare unbiased LAMLE with MLE and found that this estimator is almost as efficient as MLE. We have also discussed interval estimation of the scale parameter from complete and Type-II censored samples. Finally, we present some numerical examples to illustrate the construction of the new estimators developed here.  相似文献

The presence of a nuisance parameter may often perturb the quality of the likelihood-based inference for a parameter of interest under small to moderate sample sizes. The article proposes a maximal scale invariant transformation for likelihood-based inference for the shape in a shape-scale family to circumvent the effect of the nuisance scale parameter. The transformation can be used under complete or type-II censored samples. Simulation-based performance evaluation of the proposed estimator for the popular Weibull, Gamma and Generalized exponential distribution exhibits markedly improved performance in all types of likelihood-based inference for the shape under complete and type-II censored samples. The simulation study leads to a linear relation between the bias of the classical maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) and the transformation-based MLE for the popular Weibull and Gamma distributions. The linearity is exploited to suggest an almost unbiased estimator of the shape parameter for these distributions. Allied estimation of scale is also discussed.  相似文献

The first two moments and product moments of absolute values of order statistics are obtained for the double exponential and the double Weibull distributions. In both of the distributions an optimum linear unbiased estimator of the scale parameter, by absolute values of the order statistics, is obtained from complete and censored samples of size n=3(1)10. It is found that the new estimator is generally more efficient than the best linear unbiased estimator (BLUE) of the scale parameter by order statistcs in both of the distributions.  相似文献

The exact distribution of the sample median, and of the maximum likelihood estimator of the scale parameter of the Laplace distribution is derived. Tables of Teans, variances and the distribution functions of the corresponding dislributions are evaluacted. Exact ,solutions to the problem of confidence interval and hypothesrs testing for the scale paramrter are provided. The minimum variance unbiased estimator (MVUE) of the p.d.f. of the Laplace distribution when the location parameter is known is also given.  相似文献

A loss function proposed by Wasan (1970) is well-fitted for a measure of inaccuracy for an estimator of a scale parameter of a distribution defined onR +=(0, ∞). We refer to this loss function as the K-loss function. A relationship between the K-loss and squared error loss functions is discussed. And an optimal estimator for a scale parameter with known coefficient of variation under the K-loss function is presented.  相似文献

Truncated Cauchy distribution with four unknown parameters is considered and derivation and existence of the maximum likelihood estimates is investigated here. We provide a sufficient condition for the maximum likelihood estimate of the scale parameter to be finite, and also show that the condition is necessary for sufficiently large samples. Note that all the moments of the truncated Cauchy distribution exist which makes it much more attractive as a model when compared to the regular Cauchy. We also study, using simulations, the small sample properties of the maximum likelihood estimates.  相似文献

Abstract

Estimation of scale parameter under the squared log error loss function is considered with restriction to the principle of invariance and risk unbiasedness. An explicit form of minimum risk scale-equivariant estimator under this loss is obtained. The admissibility and inadmissibility of a class of linear estimators of the form (cT + d) are considered, where T follows a gamma distribution with an unknown scale parameter η and a known shape parameter ν. This includes the admissibility of the minimum risk equivariant estimator on η (MRE).  相似文献

In this paper, the linear empirical Bayes estimation method, which is based on approximation of the Bayes estimator by a linear function, is generalized to an extended linear empirical Bayes estimation technique which represents the Bayes estimator by a series of algebraic polynomials. The extended linear empirical Bayes estimators are elaborated in the case of a location or a scale parameter. The theory is illustrated by examples of its application to the normal distribution with a location parameter and the gamma distribution with a scale parameter. The linear and the extended linear empirical Bayes estimators are constructed in these two cases and, then, studied numerically via Monte Carlo simulations. The simulations show that the extended linear empirical Bayes estimators have better convergence rates than the traditional linear empirical Bayes estimators.  相似文献

Wu et al. [Computational comparison for weighted moments estimators and BLUE of the scale parameter of a Pareto distribution with known shape parameter under type II multiply censored sample, Appl. Math. Comput. 181 (2006), pp. 1462–1470] proposed the weighted moments estimators (WMEs) of the scale parameter of a Pareto distribution with known shape parameter on a multiply type II-censored sample. They claimed that some WMEs are better than the best linear unbiased estimator (BLUE) based on the exact mean-squared error (MSE). In this paper, the general WME (GWME) is proposed and the computational comparison of the proposed estimator with the WMEs and BLUE is done on the basis of the exact MSE for given sample sizes and different censoring schemes. As a result, the GWME is performing better than the best estimator among 12 WMEs and BLUE for all cases. Therefore, GWME is recommended for use. At last, one example is given to demonstrate the proposed GWME.  相似文献
