For the survey population total of a variable y when values of an auxiliary variable x are available a popular procedure is to employ the ratio estimator on drawing a simple random sample without replacement (SRSWOR) especially when the size of the sample is large. To set up a confidence interval for the total, various variance estimators are available to pair with the ratio estimator. We add a few more variance estimators studded with asymptotic design-cum-model properties. The ratio estimator is traditionally known to be appropriate when the regression of y on x is linear through the origin and the conditional variance of y given x is proportional to x. But through a numerical exercise by simulation we find the confidence intervals to fare better if the regression line deviates from the origin or if the conditional variance is disproportionate with x. Also, comparing the confidence intervals using alternative variance estimators we find our newly proposed variance estimators to yield favourably competitive results.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the problem of making statistical inference for a truncated normal distribution under progressive type I interval censoring. We obtain maximum likelihood estimators of unknown parameters using the expectation-maximization algorithm and in sequel, we also compute corresponding midpoint estimates of parameters. Estimation based on the probability plot method is also considered. Asymptotic confidence intervals of unknown parameters are constructed based on the observed Fisher information matrix. We obtain Bayes estimators of parameters with respect to informative and non-informative prior distributions under squared error and linex loss functions. We compute these estimates using the importance sampling procedure. The highest posterior density intervals of unknown parameters are constructed as well. We present a Monte Carlo simulation study to compare the performance of proposed point and interval estimators. Analysis of a real data set is also performed for illustration purposes. Finally, inspection times and optimal censoring plans based on the expected Fisher information matrix are discussed.  相似文献

A progressive hybrid censoring scheme is a mixture of type-I and type-II progressive censoring schemes. In this paper, we mainly consider the analysis of progressive type-II hybrid-censored data when the lifetime distribution of the individual item is the normal and extreme value distributions. Since the maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs) of these parameters cannot be obtained in the closed form, we propose to use the expectation and maximization (EM) algorithm to compute the MLEs. Also, the Newton–Raphson method is used to estimate the model parameters. The asymptotic variance–covariance matrix of the MLEs under EM framework is obtained by Fisher information matrix using the missing information and asymptotic confidence intervals for the parameters are then constructed. This study will end up with comparing the two methods of estimation and the asymptotic confidence intervals of coverage probabilities corresponding to the missing information principle and the observed information matrix through a simulation study, illustrated examples and real data analysis.  相似文献

The problem of constructing confidence intervals to estimate the mean in a two-stage nested model is considered. Several approximate intervals, which are based on both linear and nonlinear estimators of the mean are investigated. In particular, the method of bootstrap is used to correct the bias in the ‘usual’ variance of the nonlinear estimators. It is found that the intervals based on the nonlinear estimators did not achieve the nominal confidence coefficient for designs involving a small number of groups. Further, it turns out that the intervals are generally conservative, especially at small values of the intraclass correlation coefficient, and that the intervals based on the nonlinear estimators are more conservative than those based on the linear estimators. Compared with the others, the intervals based on the unweighted mean of the group means performed well in terms of coverage and length. For small values of the intraclass correlation coefficient, the ANOVA estimators of the variance components are recommended, otherwise the unweighted means estimator of the between groups variance component should be used. If one is fortunate enough to have control over the design, he is advised to increase the number of groups, as opposed to increasing group sizes, while avoiding groups of size one or two.  相似文献

Inference on the regression parameters in a heteroscedastic linear regression model with replication is considered, using either the ordinary least-squares (OLS) or the weighted least-squares (WLS) estimator. A delete-group jackknife method is shown to produce consistent variance estimators irrespective of within-group correlations, unlike the delete-one jackknife variance estimators or those based on the customary δ-method assuming within-group independence. Finite-sample properties of the delete-group variance estimators and associated confidence intervals are also studied through simulation.  相似文献

Conditional confidence intervals for the location parameter of the double exponential distribution based on maximum likelihood estimators conditioned on a set of ancillary statistics and the corresponding unconditional confidence intervals based on the maximum likelihood estimators alone are compared in two ways. Monte Carlo techniques are used and the conditional approach appears to give slightly better results although agreement as n becomes larger is noted  相似文献

A componentwise B-spline method is proposed for estimating the unknown functions in the varying-coefficient models with longitudinal data. Different amounts of smoothing are used for different individual coefficient functions and the estimators of different coefficient functions are obtained by different minimization operations. The local asymptotic bias and variance of the estimators are derived. It is shown that our estimators achieve the local and global optimal convergence rates even if the coefficient functions belong to different smoothness families. The asymptotic distributions of the estimators are also established and are used to construct approximate pointwise confidence intervals for coefficient functions. Finite sample properties of our procedures are studied through Monte Carlo simulations.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Scale equivariant estimators of the common variance σ2, of correlated normal random variables, have mean squared errors (MSE) which depend on the unknown correlations. For this reason, a scale equivariant estimator of σ2 which uniformly minimizes the MSE does not exist. For the equi-correlated case, we have developed three equivariant estimators of σ2: a Bayesian estimator for invariant prior as well as two non-Bayesian estimators. We then generalized these three estimators for the case of several variables with multiple unknown correlations. In addition, we developed a system of confidence intervals which produce the desired coverage probability while being efficient in terms of expected length.  相似文献

This paper proposes procedures to provide confidence intervals (CIs) for reliability in stress–strength models, considering the particular case of a bivariate normal set-up. The suggested CIs are obtained by employing either asymptotic variances of maximum-likelihood estimators or a bootstrap procedure. The coverage and the accuracy of these intervals are empirically checked through a simulation study and compared with those of another proposal in the literature. An application to real data is provided.  相似文献

In this paper, the reliability of a system is discussed when the strength of the system and the stress imposed on it are independent, non-identical exponentiated Pareto distributed random variables. Different point estimations and interval estimations are proposed. The point estimators obtained are maximum likelihood, uniformly minimum variance unbiased and Bayesian estimators. The interval estimations obtained are approximate, exact, bootstrap-p and bootstrap-t confidence intervals and Bayesian credible interval. Different methods and the corresponding confidence intervals are compared using Monte-carlo simulations.  相似文献

In this article, we investigate the limitations of traditional quantile function estimators and introduce a new class of quantile function estimators, namely, the semi-parametric tail-extrapolated quantile estimators, which has excellent performance for estimating the extreme tails with finite sample sizes. The smoothed bootstrap and direct density estimation via the characteristic function methods are developed for the estimation of confidence intervals. Through a comprehensive simulation study to compare the confidence interval estimations of various quantile estimators, we discuss the preferred quantile estimator in conjunction with the confidence interval estimation method to use under different circumstances. Data examples are given to illustrate the superiority of the semi-parametric tail-extrapolated quantile estimators. The new class of quantile estimators is obtained by slight modification of traditional quantile estimators, and therefore, should be specifically appealing to researchers in estimating the extreme tails.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate four existing and three new confidence interval estimators for the negative binomial proportion (i.e., proportion under inverse/negative binomial sampling). An extensive and systematic comparative study among these confidence interval estimators through Monte Carlo simulations is presented. The performance of these confidence intervals are evaluated in terms of their coverage probabilities and expected interval widths. Our simulation studies suggest that the confidence interval estimator based on saddlepoint approximation is more appealing for large coverage levels (e.g., nominal level≤1% ) whereas the score confidence interval estimator is more desirable for those commonly used coverage levels (e.g., nominal level>1% ). We illustrate these confidence interval construction methods with a real data set from a maternal congenital heart disease study.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the simple step-stress model for a two-parameter exponential distribution, when both the parameters are unknown and the data are Type-II censored. It is assumed that under two different stress levels, the scale parameter only changes but the location parameter remains unchanged. It is observed that the maximum likelihood estimators do not always exist. We obtain the maximum likelihood estimates of the unknown parameters whenever they exist. We provide the exact conditional distributions of the maximum likelihood estimators of the scale parameters. Since the construction of the exact confidence intervals is very difficult from the conditional distributions, we propose to use the observed Fisher Information matrix for this purpose. We have suggested to use the bootstrap method for constructing confidence intervals. Bayes estimates and associated credible intervals are obtained using the importance sampling technique. Extensive simulations are performed to compare the performances of the different confidence and credible intervals in terms of their coverage percentages and average lengths. The performances of the bootstrap confidence intervals are quite satisfactory even for small sample sizes.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider inference of the stress-strength parameter, R, based on two independent Type-II censored samples from exponentiated Fréchet populations with different index parameters. The maximum likelihood and uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimators, exact and asymptotic confidence intervals and hypotheses testing for R are obtained. We conduct a Monte Carlo simulation study to evaluate the performance of these estimators and confidence intervals. Finally, two real data sets are analysed for illustrative purposes.  相似文献

Progressive Type-II hybrid censoring is a mixture of progressive Type-II and hybrid censoring schemes. In this paper, we discuss the statistical inference on Weibull parameters when the observed data are progressively Type-II hybrid censored. We derive the maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs) and the approximate maximum likelihood estimators (AMLEs) of the Weibull parameters. We then use the asymptotic distributions of the maximum likelihood estimators to construct approximate confidence intervals. Bayes estimates and the corresponding highest posterior density credible intervals of the unknown parameters are obtained under suitable priors on the unknown parameters and also by using the Gibbs sampling procedure. Monte Carlo simulations are then performed for comparing the confidence intervals based on all those different methods. Finally, one data set is analyzed for illustrative purposes.  相似文献

In this paper, we revisit the construction of confidence intervals for extreme quantiles of Pareto-type distributions. A novel asymptotic pivotal quantity is proposed for these quantile estimators, which leads to new asymptotic confidence intervals that exhibit more accurate coverage probability. This pivotal quantity also allows for the construction of a saddle-point approximation, from which a second set of new confidence intervals follows. The small-sample properties and utility of these confidence intervals are studied using simulations and a case study from insurance.  相似文献

A hybrid censoring scheme is a mixture of Type-I and Type-II censoring schemes. We study the estimation of parameters of weighted exponential distribution based on Type-II hybrid censored data. By applying the EM algorithm, maximum likelihood estimators are evaluated. Using Fisher information matrix, asymptotic confidence intervals are provided. By applying Markov chain Monte Carlo techniques, Bayes estimators, and corresponding highest posterior density confidence intervals of parameters are obtained. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to compare the performances of the different methods, and one dataset is analyzed for illustrative purposes.  相似文献

We investigate the convergence rates of uniform bias-corrected confidence intervals for a smooth curve using local polynomial regression for both the interior and boundary region. We discuss the cases when the degree of the polynomial is odd and even. The uniform confidence intervals are based on the volume-of-tube formula modified for biased estimators. We empirically show that the proposed uniform confidence intervals attain, at least approximately, nominal coverage. Finally, we investigate the performance of the volume-of-tube based confidence intervals for independent non-Gaussian errors.  相似文献

Bootstrapping the conditional copula   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper is concerned with inference about the dependence or association between two random variables conditionally upon the given value of a covariate. A way to describe such a conditional dependence is via a conditional copula function. Nonparametric estimators for a conditional copula then lead to nonparametric estimates of conditional association measures such as a conditional Kendall's tau. The limiting distributions of nonparametric conditional copula estimators are rather involved. In this paper we propose a bootstrap procedure for approximating these distributions and their characteristics, and establish its consistency. We apply the proposed bootstrap procedure for constructing confidence intervals for conditional association measures, such as a conditional Blomqvist beta and a conditional Kendall's tau. The performances of the proposed methods are investigated via a simulation study involving a variety of models, ranging from models in which the dependence (weak or strong) on the covariate is only through the copula and not through the marginals, to models in which this dependence appears in both the copula and the marginal distributions. As a conclusion we provide practical recommendations for constructing bootstrap-based confidence intervals for the discussed conditional association measures.  相似文献

This article introduces adaptive weighted maximum likelihood estimators for binary regression models. The asymptotic distribution under the model is established, and asymptotic confidence intervals are derived. Finite-sample properties are studied by simulation. For clean datasets, the proposed adaptive estimators are more efficient than the non-adaptive ones even for moderate sample sizes, and for outlier-contaminated datasets they show a comparable robustness. As for the asymptotic confidence intervals, the actual coverage levels under the model are very close to the nominal levels (even for moderate sample sizes), and they are reasonably stable under contamination.  相似文献
