This article addresses the density estimation problem using nonparametric Bayesian approach. It is considered hierarchical mixture models where the uncertainty about the mixing measure is modeled using the Dirichlet process. The main goal is to build more flexible models for density estimation. Extensions of the normal mixture model via Dirichlet process previously introduced in the literature are twofold. First, Dirichlet mixtures of skew-normal distributions are considered, say, in the first stage of the hierarchical model, the normal distribution is replaced by the skew-normal one. We also assume a skew-normal distribution as the center measure in the Dirichlet mixture of normal distributions. Some important results related to Bayesian inference in the location-scale skew-normal family are introduced. In particular, we obtain the stochastic representations for the full conditional distributions of the location and skewness parameters. The algorithm introduced by MacEachern and Müller in 1998 is used to sample from the posterior distributions. The models are compared considering simulated data sets. Finally, the well-known Old Faithful Geyser data set is analyzed using the proposed models and the Dirichlet mixture of normal distributions. The model based on Dirichlet mixture of skew-normal distributions captured the data bimodality and skewness shown in the empirical distribution. 相似文献

Difference-based estimators for the error variance are popular since they do not require the estimation of the mean function. Unlike most existing difference-based estimators, new estimators proposed by Müller et al. (2003) and Tong and Wang (2005) achieved the asymptotic optimal rate as residual-based estimators. In this article, we study the relative errors of these difference-based estimators which lead to better understanding of the differences between them and residual-based estimators. To compute the relative error of the covariate-matched U-statistic estimator proposed by Müller et al. (2003), we develop a modified version by using simpler weights. We further investigate its asymptotic property for both equidistant and random designs and show that our modified estimator is asymptotically efficient. 相似文献

A proposed method based on frailty models is used to identify longitudinal biomarkers or surrogates for a multivariate survival. This method is an extention of earlier models by Wulfsohn and Tsiatis (1997) and Song et al. (2002). In this article, similar to Henderson et al. (2002), a joint likelihood function combines the likelihood functions of the longitudinal biomarkers and the multivariate survival times. We use simulations to explore how the number of individuals, the number of time points per individual and the functional form of the random effects from the longitudianl biomarkers influence the power to detect the association of a longitudinal biomarker and the multivariate survival time. We develop a series of Bayesian statistical models for estimating survival of a neotropic didelphid marsupial, the Brazilian gracile mouse opossum (Gracilinanus microtarsus). These models are based on the Cormack–Jolly–Seber model (Cormack, 1964; Jolly 1965; Seber 1965) with both survival and recapture rates expressed as a function of covariates using a logit link. The proposed models allow taking into account heterogeneity in capture probability caused by the existence of different groups of individuals in the population. The models were applied to two cohorts (Cohort, 2000, 2001) with the first one including 14 and the second one 15 sampling occasions. The best models for each of the cohorts indicate that G. microtarsus is best described as partially semelparous, a condition in which mortality after the first mating is high but graded over time, with a fraction of males surviving for a second breeding season (Boonstra, 2005). 相似文献

This article presents an application of copula methodology in exchange markets. In this article, we consider the concept of directional dependence given by Sungur (2005). We also consider and study directional dependence for generalized Farlie–Gumbel–Morgenstern (FGM) distributions, which are a member of the Rodríguez-Lallena and Úbeda-Flores (2004) family, C(u, v) = uv + f(u)g(v). Examples of the generalized FGM distributions are provided with exchange market data of the Euro, Canadian dollar, Korean Won, Japanese Yen, and Hong Kong dollar against the U.S. dollar. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Stratification of distribution functions is an important issue in the area of income distributions. Two distribution functions form a perfect stratification if they occupy disjoint ranges on the horizontal axis. Otherwise, there is overlapping. A measure which quantifies the amount of stratification is introduced by Yitzhaki (1994), but no procedure for drawing inference is suggested. We develop a consistent estimator of the degree of overlapping and offer a nonparametric procedure for inference. Its limiting distribution, properly standardized, is normal. The asymptotic variance can be estimated using the jackknife method, and simulations show that the suggested procedure works well for sample sizes of 50 (100 for some cases). 相似文献

The complication in analyzing tumor data is that the tumors detected in a screening program tend to be slowly progressive tumors, which is the so-called length-biased sampling that is inherent in screening studies. Under the assumption that all subjects have the same tumor growth function, Ghosh (2008) developed estimation procedures for proportional hazards model. In this article, by modeling growth function as a function of covariates, we demonstrate that Ghosh (2008)'s approach can be extended to the case when each subject has a specific growth function. A simulation study is conducted to demonstrate the potential usefulness of the proposed estimators for the regression parameters in the proportional and additive hazards model. 相似文献

In this article, we study the fair valuation of participating life insurance contract, which is one of the most common life insurance products, under the two-sided jump diffusion model with the consideration of default risk. The participating life insurance contracts considered here can be expressed as portfolios of options as shown by Grosen and Jøgrgensen (1997). We can give the Laplace transforms for these options under the two-sided jump diffusion model, and then price these options by inverting Laplace transforms. 相似文献

In this article, we find designs insensitive to the presence of an outlier in a diallel cross design setup for estimating a complete set of orthonormal contrasts among the effects of the general combining abilities of a set of parental lines. The criterion of robustness, suggested by Mandal (1989) in block design setup and used by Biswas (2012) in treatment-control setup, is adapted here. Complete diallel cross designs, suggested by Gupta and Kageyama (1994), and partial diallel cross designs, suggested by Gupta et al. (1995) and Mukerjee (1997), are found to be robust under certain conditions. 相似文献

We study the validation of prediction rules such as regression models and classification algorithms through two out-of-sample strategies, cross-validation and accumulated prediction error. We use the framework of Efron (1983) where measures of prediction errors are defined as sample averages of expected errors and show through exact finite sample calculations that cross-validation and accumulated prediction error yield different smoothing parameter choices in nonparametric regression. We consider a new generalization of the skew-normal distribution introduced by Azzalini (1985). We denote this distribution Beta skew-normal (BSN) since it is a special case of the Beta generated distribution (Jones, 2004). Some properties of the BSN are studied. ABSTRACT This paper reviews and extends the literature on the finite sample behavior of tests for sample selection bias. Monte Carlo results show that, when the “multicollinearity problem” identified by Nawata (1993) is severe, (i) the t-test based on the Heckman–Greene variance estimator can be unreliable, (ii) the Likelihood Ratio test remains powerful, and (iii) nonnormality can be interpreted as severe sample selection bias by Maximum Likelihood methods, leading to negative Wald statistics. We also confirm previous findings (Leung and Yu, 1996) that the standard regression-based t-test (Heckman, 1979) and the asymptotically efficient Lagrange Multiplier test (Melino, 1982), are robust to nonnormality but have very little power. 相似文献

Extending the bifurcating autoregressive (BAR) process (cf. Cowan and Staudte, 1986) to multi-casting (multi-splitting) data, Hwang and Choi (2009) introduced multi-casting autoregression (MCAR, for short) defined on multi-casting tree structured data. This article is concerned with the case when the MCAR model is partially specified only through conditional mean and variance without directly imposing autoregressive (AR) structure. The resulting class of models will be referred to as P-MCAR (partially specified MCAR). The P-MCAR considerably enlarges the class of multi-casting models including (as special cases) MCAR, random coefficient MCAR, conditionally heteroscedastic multi-casting models and binomial-thinning processes. Moment structures for this broad P-MCAR class are investigated. Least squares (LS) estimation method is discussed and asymptotic relative efficiency (ARE) of the generalized-LS over ordinary-LS is obtained in a closed form. By applying the recursion of Huffer (1988) repeatedly, we propose an algorithm for evaluating the null joint distribution of Dixon-type test statistics for testing discordancy of k upper outliers in exponential samples. By using the critical values of Dixon-type test statistics determined from the proposed algorithm and those of Cochran-type test statistics presented earlier by Lin and Balakrishnan (2009), we carry out an extensive Monte Carlo study to investigate the powers and the error probabilities for the effects of masking and swamping when the number of outliers k = 2 and 3. Based on our empirical findings, we recommend Rosner’s (1975) sequential test procedure based on Dixon-type test statistics for testing multiple outliers from an exponential distribution. 相似文献

In this article, we propose a nonparametric method to test for symmetry in bivariate data. By using the extension of Fisher's exact treatment for 2 × 2 contingency tables proposed by Freeman and Halton (1951), we can test the hypothesis of equal distribution for two samples of integer valued variables. Then, by counting the number of observations belonging to each cell of a symmetric, appropriately built grid, we can produce the two samples of integers required to use this test for equal distribution. The resulting test for symmetry is potentially extendible to higher dimensions. A simulation study is performed to compare with some known tests (Bowker, 1948; Hollander, 1971; and its improvement given in Krampe and Kuhnt, 2007). This article presents results concerning the performance of both single equation and system panel cointegration tests and estimators. The study considers the tests developed in Pedroni (1999, 2004), Westerlund (2005), Larsson et al. (2001), and Breitung (2005) and the estimators developed in Phillips and Moon (1999), Pedroni (2000), Kao and Chiang (2000), Mark and Sul (2003), Pedroni (2001), and Breitung (2005). We study the impact of stable autoregressive roots approaching the unit circle, of I(2) components, of short-run cross-sectional correlation and of cross-unit cointegration on the performance of the tests and estimators. The data are simulated from three-dimensional individual specific VAR systems with cointegrating ranks varying from zero to two for fourteen different panel dimensions. The Significance Analysis of Microarrays (SAM; Tusher et al., 2001) method is widely used in analyzing gene expression data while controlling the FDR by using resampling-based procedure in the microarray setting. One of the main components of the SAM procedure is the adjustment of the test statistic. The introduction of the fudge factor to the test statistic aims at deflating the large value of test statistics due to the small standard error of gene-expression. Lin et al. (2008) pointed out that the fudge factor does not effectively improve the power and the control of the FDR as compared to the SAM procedure without the fudge factor in the presence of small variance genes. Motivated by the simulation results presented in Lin et al. (2008), in this article, we extend our study to compare several methods for choosing the fudge factor in the modified t-type test statistics and use simulation studies to investigate the power and the control of the FDR of the considered methods. 相似文献

Asymptotic Properties of Conditional Quantile Estimator Under Left-Truncated and α-Mixing Conditions
In this article, we establish strong uniform convergence and asymptotic normality of estimators of conditional quantile and conditional distribution function for a left truncated model when the data exhibit some kind of dependence. It is assumed that the observations form a stationary α-mixing sequence. The results of Lemdani et al. (2009) are relaxed from the i.i.d. assumption to α-mixing setting. We introduce a score test to identify longitudinal biomarkers or surrogates for a time to event outcome. This method is an extension of Henderson et al. (2000, 2002). In this article, a score test is based on a joint likelihood function which combines the likelihood functions of the longitudinal biomarkers and the survival times. Henderson et al. (2000, 2002) assumed that the same random effect exists in the longitudinal component and in the Cox model and then they can derive a score test to determine if a longitudinal biomarker is associated with time to an event. We extend this work and our score test is based on a joint likelihood function which allows other random effects to be present in the survival function. Considering heterogeneous baseline hazards in individuals, we use simulations to explore how the factors can influence the power of a score test to detect the association of a longitudinal biomarker and the survival time. These factors include the functional form of the random effects from the longitudinal biomarkers, in the different number of individuals, and time points per individual. We illustrate our method using a prothrombin index as a predictor of survival in liver cirrhosis patients. 相似文献
