ABSTRACT

Fernández-Durán [Circular distributions based on nonnegative trigonometric sums. Biometrics. 2004;60:499–503] developed a new family of circular distributions based on non-negative trigonometric sums that is suitable for modelling data sets that present skewness and/or multimodality. In this paper, a Bayesian approach to deriving estimates of the unknown parameters of this family of distributions is presented. Because the parameter space is the surface of a hypersphere and the dimension of the hypersphere is an unknown parameter of the distribution, the Bayesian inference must be based on transdimensional Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms to obtain samples from the high-dimensional posterior distribution. The MCMC algorithm explores the parameter space by moving along great circles on the surface of the hypersphere. The methodology is illustrated with real and simulated data sets.  相似文献

In this paper, we use Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods in order to estimate and compare stochastic production frontier models from a Bayesian perspective. We consider a number of competing models in terms of different production functions and the distribution of the asymmetric error term. All MCMC simulations are done using the package JAGS (Just Another Gibbs Sampler), a clone of the classic BUGS package which works closely with the R package where all the statistical computations and graphics are done.  相似文献

An alternative distributional assumption is proposed for the stochastic volatility model. This results in extremely flexible tail behaviour of the sampling distribution for the observables, as well as in the availability of a simple Markov Chain Monte Carlo strategy for posterior analysis. By allowing the tail behaviour to be determined by a separate parameter, we reserve the parameters of the volatility process to dictate the degree of volatility clustering. Treatment of a mean function is formally integrated in the analysis.

Some empirical examples on both stock prices and exchange rates clearly indicate the presence of fat tails, in combination with high levels of volatility clustering. In addition, predictive distributions indicate a good fit with these typical financial data sets.  相似文献

It is vital for insurance companies to have appropriate levels of loss reserving to pay outstanding claims and related settlement costs. With many uncertainties and time lags inherently involved in the claims settlement process, loss reserving therefore must be based on estimates. Existing models and methods cannot cope with irregular and extreme claims and hence do not offer an accurate prediction of loss reserving. This paper extends the conventional normal error distribution in loss reserving modeling to a range of heavy-tailed distributions which are expressed by certain scale mixtures forms. This extension enables robust analysis and, in addition, allows an efficient implementation of Bayesian analysis via Markov chain Monte Carlo simulations. Various models for the mean of the sampling distributions, including the log-Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), log-Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) and state space models, are considered and the straightforward implementation of scale mixtures distributions is demonstrated using OpenBUGS.  相似文献

The paper considers a lognormal model for the survival times and obtains a Bayes solution by means of Gibbs sampler algorithm when the priors for the parameters are vague. The formulation given in the paper is mainly focused for censored data problems though it is equally well applicable for complete data scenarios as well. For the purpose of numerical illustration, we considered two real data sets on head and neck cancer patients when they have been treated using either radiotherapy or chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy. The paper not only compares the survival functions for the two therapies assuming a lognormal model but also provides a model compatibility study based on predictive simulation results so that the choice of lognormal model can be justified for the two data sets. The ease of our analysis as compared to an earlier approach is certainly an advantage.  相似文献

A stochastic volatility in mean model with correlated errors using the symmetrical class of scale mixtures of normal distributions is introduced in this article. The scale mixture of normal distributions is an attractive class of symmetric distributions that includes the normal, Student-t, slash and contaminated normal distributions as special cases, providing a robust alternative to estimation in stochastic volatility in mean models in the absence of normality. Using a Bayesian paradigm, an efficient method based on Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) is developed for parameter estimation. The methods developed are applied to analyze daily stock return data from the São Paulo Stock, Mercantile & Futures Exchange index (IBOVESPA). The Bayesian predictive information criteria (BPIC) and the logarithm of the marginal likelihood are used as model selection criteria. The results reveal that the stochastic volatility in mean model with correlated errors and slash distribution provides a significant improvement in model fit for the IBOVESPA data over the usual normal model.  相似文献
