The authors discuss the bias of the estimate of the variance of the overall effect synthesized from individual studies by using the variance weighted method. This bias is proven to be negative. Furthermore, the conditions, the likelihood of underestimation and the bias from this conventional estimate are studied based on the assumption that the estimates of the effect are subject to normal distribution with common mean. The likelihood of underestimation is very high (e.g. it is greater than 85% when the sample sizes in two combined studies are less than 120). The alternative less biased estimates for the cases with and without the homogeneity of the variances are given in order to adjust for the sample size and the variation of the population variance. In addition, the sample size weight method is suggested if the consistence of the sample variances is violated Finally, a real example is presented to show the difference by using the above three estimate methods.  相似文献

A multi‐sample test for equality of mean directions is developed for populations having Langevin‐von Mises‐Fisher distributions with a common unknown concentration. The proposed test statistic is a monotone transformation of the likelihood ratio. The high‐concentration asymptotic null distribution of the test statistic is derived. In contrast to previously suggested high‐concentration tests, the high‐concentration asymptotic approximation to the null distribution of the proposed test statistic is also valid for large sample sizes with any fixed nonzero concentration parameter. Simulations of size and power show that the proposed test outperforms competing tests. An example with three‐dimensional data from an anthropological study illustrates the practical application of the testing procedure.  相似文献

In this study, a changepoint model, which can detect either a mean shift or a trend change when accounting for autocorrelation in short time-series, was investigated with simulations and a new method is proposed. The changepoint hypotheses were tested using a likelihood ratio test. The test statistic does not follow a known distribution and depends on the length of the time-series and the autocorrelation. The results imply that it is not possible to detect autocorrelation and that the estimate of the autocorrelation parameter is biased. It is therefore recommended to use critical values from the empirical distribution for a fixed autocorrelation.  相似文献

Under complex survey sampling, in particular when selection probabilities depend on the response variable (informative sampling), the sample and population distributions are different, possibly resulting in selection bias. This article is concerned with this problem by fitting two statistical models, namely: the variance components model (a two-stage model) and the fixed effects model (a single-stage model) for one-way analysis of variance, under complex survey design, for example, two-stage sampling, stratification, and unequal probability of selection, etc. Classical theory underlying the use of the two-stage model involves simple random sampling for each of the two stages. In such cases the model in the sample, after sample selection, is the same as model for the population; before sample selection. When the selection probabilities are related to the values of the response variable, standard estimates of the population model parameters may be severely biased, leading possibly to false inference. The idea behind the approach is to extract the model holding for the sample data as a function of the model in the population and of the first order inclusion probabilities. And then fit the sample model, using analysis of variance, maximum likelihood, and pseudo maximum likelihood methods of estimation. The main feature of the proposed techniques is related to their behavior in terms of the informativeness parameter. We also show that the use of the population model that ignores the informative sampling design, yields biased model fitting.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with testing the equality of scale parameters of K(> 2) two-parameter exponential distributions in presence of unspecified location parameters based on complete and type II censored samples. We develop a marginal likelihood ratio statistic, a quadratic statistic (Qu) (Nelson, 1982) based on maximum marginal likelihood estimates of the scale parameters under the null and the alternative hypotheses, a C(a) statistic (CPL) (Neyman, 1959) based on the profile likelihood estimate of the scale parameter under the null hypothesis and an extremal scale parameter ratio statistic (ESP) (McCool, 1979). We show that the marginal likelihood ratio statistic is equivalent to the modified Bartlett test statistic. We use Bartlett's small sample correction to the marginal likelihood ratio statistic and call it the modified marginal likelihood ratio statistic (MLB). We then compare the four statistics, MLBi Qut CPL and ESP in terms of size and power by using Monte Carlo simulation experiments. For the variety of sample sizes and censoring combinations and nominal levels considered the statistic MLB holds nominal level most accurately and based on empirically calculated critical values, this statistic performs best or as good as others in most situations. In this paper, a test statistic for testing upper outliers with a slippage alternative, in an exponential sample is proposed. No tables for critical values are required as they can be calculated easily for any sample size. A simulation study is also carried out to compare the performance of the test with the maximum likelihood ratio test and other existing tests.  相似文献

New analytic forms for distributions at the heart of internal pilot theory solve many problems inherent to current techniques for linear models with Gaussian errors. Internal pilot designs use a fraction of the data to re-estimate the error variance and modify the final sample size. Too small or too large a sample size caused by an incorrect planning variance can be avoided. However, the usual hypothesis test may need adjustment to control the Type I error rate. A bounding test achieves control of Type I error rate while providing most of the advantages of the unadjusted test. Unfortunately, the presence of both a doubly truncated and an untruncated chi-square random variable complicates the theory and computations. An expression for the density of the sum of the two chi-squares gives a simple form for the test statistic density. Examples illustrate that the new results make the bounding test practical by providing very stable, convergent, and much more accurate computations. Furthermore, the new computational methods are effectively never slower and usually much faster. All results apply to any univariate linear model with fixed predictors and Gaussian errors, with the t-test a special case.  相似文献

Empirical likelihood inferences for the parameter component in an additive partially linear errors-in-variables model with longitudinal data are investigated in this article. A corrected-attenuation block empirical likelihood procedure is used to estimate the regression coefficients, a corrected-attenuation block empirical log-likelihood ratio statistic is suggested and its asymptotic distribution is obtained. Compared with the method based on normal approximations, our proposed method does not require any consistent estimator for the asymptotic variance and bias. Simulation studies indicate that our proposed method performs better than the method based on normal approximations in terms of relatively higher coverage probabilities and smaller confidence regions. Furthermore, an example of an air pollution and health data set is used to illustrate the performance of the proposed method.  相似文献

Since the treatment effect of an experimental drug is generally not known at the onset of a clinical trial, it may be wise to allow for an adjustment in the sample size after an interim analysis of the unblinded data. Using a particular adaptive test statistic, a procedure is demonstrated for finding the optimal design. Both the timing of the interim analysis and the way the sample size is adjusted can influence the power of the resulting procedure. It is possible to have smaller average sample size using the adaptive test statistic, even if the initial estimate of the treatment effect is wrong, compared to the sample size needed using a standard test statistic without an interim look and assuming a correct initial estimate of the effect. Non‐parametric generalized likelihood ratio test is a popular method of model checking for regressions. However, there are two issues that may be the barriers for its powerfulness: existing bias term and curse of dimensionality. The purpose of this paper is thus twofold: a bias reduction is suggested and a dimension reduction‐based adaptive‐to‐model enhancement is recommended to promote the power performance. The proposed test statistic still possesses the Wilks phenomenon and behaves like a test with only one covariate. Thus, it converges to its limit at a much faster rate and is much more sensitive to alternative models than the classical non‐parametric generalized likelihood ratio test. As a by‐product, we also prove that the bias‐corrected test is more efficient than the one without bias reduction in the sense that its asymptotic variance is smaller. Simulation studies and a real data analysis are conducted to evaluate of proposed tests.  相似文献

In mixed linear models, it is frequently of interest to test hypotheses on the variance components. F-test and likelihood ratio test (LRT) are commonly used for such purposes. Current LRTs available in literature are based on limiting distribution theory. With the development of finite sample distribution theory, it becomes possible to derive the exact test for likelihood ratio statistic. In this paper, we consider the problem of testing null hypotheses on the variance component in a one-way balanced random effects model. We use the exact test for the likelihood ratio statistic and compare the performance of F-test and LRT. Simulations provide strong support of the equivalence between these two tests. Furthermore, we prove the equivalence between these two tests mathematically.  相似文献

A new, fully data-driven bandwidth selector with a double smoothing (DS) bias term and a data-driven variance estimator is developed following the bootstrap idea. The data-driven variance estimation does not involve any additional bandwidth selection. The proposed bandwidth selector convergences faster than a plug-in one due to the DS bias estimate, whereas the data-driven variance improves its finite sample performance clearly and makes it stable. Asymptotic results of the proposals are obtained. A comparative simulation study was done to show the overall gains and the gains obtained by improving either the bias term or the variance estimate, respectively. It is shown that the use of a good variance estimator is more important when the sample size is relatively small.  相似文献

A particular concerns of researchers in statistical inference is bias in parameters estimation. Maximum likelihood estimators are often biased and for small sample size, the first order bias of them can be large and so it may influence the efficiency of the estimator. There are different methods for reduction of this bias. In this paper, we proposed a modified maximum likelihood estimator for the shape parameter of two popular skew distributions, namely skew-normal and skew-t, by offering a new method. We show that this estimator has lower asymptotic bias than the maximum likelihood estimator and is more efficient than those based on the existing methods.  相似文献

Issues of public policy are typically decided by non‐specialists who are increasingly informed by statistical methods. In order to be influential, inferential techniques must be widely understood and accepted. This motivates the author to propose likelihood‐based methods that prove relatively insensitive to the choice of underlying distribution because they exploit a peculiarly stable relation between two standard errors and a 95% coverage probability. The author also notes that bootstrap and jackknife estimates of variance can sometimes be strongly biased. In fact, symbolic computations in R suggest that they are reliable only for statistics that are well approximated by averages whose distributions are roughly symmetric. The author thus proposes to transform the classical likelihood ratio into a statistic whose variance can be estimated robustly. He shows that the signed root of the log‐likelihood is well approximated by an average with a roughly symmetric distribution. This leads to Cox‐Tukey intervals for a Student‐like statistic and to simple confidence intervals for most models used in public policy.  相似文献

This paper proposes an overlapping-based test statistic for testing the equality of two exponential distributions with different scale and location parameters. The test statistic is defined as the maximum likelihood estimate of the Weitzman's overlapping coefficient, which estimates the agreement of two densities. The proposed test statistic is derived in closed form. Simulated critical points are generated for the proposed test statistic for various sample sizes and significance levels via Monte Carlo Simulations. Khuri (1989) tests for the intraclass covariance structure implied by the balanced two-way mixed analysis of variance model by computing wilks' likelihood ratio test statistic using the sample covariance matrix of the vectors of treatment means. In the unbalanced case he uses a linear transformation to augment the treatment-mean vectors to vectors which are expected to satisfy the intraclass structure, and then computes Wilks' statistic using these augmented vectors. In this article, we study the profile likelihood estimation and inference on the partially linear model with a diverging number of parameters. Polynomial splines are applied to estimate the nonparametric component and we focus on constructing profile likelihood ratio statistic to examine the testing problem for the parametric component in the partially linear model. Under some regularity conditions, the asymptotic distribution of profile likelihood ratio statistic is proposed when the number of parameters grows with the sample size. K correlated 2×2 tables with structural zero are commonly encountered in infectious disease studies. A hypothesis test for risk difference is considered in K independent 2×2 tables with structural zero in this paper. Score statistic, likelihood ratio statistic and Wald‐type statistic are proposed to test the hypothesis on the basis of stratified data and pooled data. Sample size formulae are derived for controlling a pre‐specified power or a pre‐determined confidence interval width. Our empirical results show that score statistic and likelihood ratio statistic behave better than Wald‐type statistic in terms of type I error rate and coverage probability, sample sizes based on stratified test are smaller than those based on the pooled test in the same design.
