Weibull distributions have received wide ranging applications in many areas including reliability, hydrology and communication systems. Many estimation methods have been proposed for Weibull distributions. But there has not been a comprehensive comparison of these estimation methods. Most studies have focused on comparing the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) with one of the other approaches. In this paper, we first propose an L-moment estimator for the Weibull distribution. Then, a comprehensive comparison is made of the following methods: the method of maximum likelihood estimation (MLE), the method of logarithmic moments, the percentile method, the method of moments and the method of L-moments.  相似文献

The first known bivariate distribution with gamma and beta marginals is introduced. Various representations are derived for its joint probability density function (pdf), joint cumulative distribution function (cdf), product moments, conditional pdfs, conditional cdfs, conditional moments, joint moment generating function, joint characteristic function and entropies. The method of maximum likelihood and the method of moments are used to derive the associated estimation procedures as well as the Fisher information matrix, variance–covariance matrix and the profile likelihood confidence intervals. An application to drought data from Nebraska is provided. Some other applications are also discussed. Finally, an extension of the bivariate distribution to the multivariate case is proposed.  相似文献

In this article, we discuss the estimation of model parameters of the Type II bivariate Pólya–Aeppli distribution using the method of moments and the maximum likelihood method. We also compare some interval estimation methods. We then carry out a Monte Carlo simulation study to evaluate the performance of the proposed point and interval estimation methods. Finally, we present an example to illustrate all the inferential methods developed here.  相似文献

This paper proposes two methods of estimation for the parameters in a Poisson-exponential model. The proposed methods combine the method of moments with a regression method based on the empirical moment generating function. One of the methods is an adaptation of the mixed-moments procedure of Koutrouvelis & Canavos (1999). The asymptotic distribution of the estimator obtained with this method is derived. Finite-sample comparisons are made with the maximum likelihood estimator and the method of moments. The paper concludes with an exploratory-type analysis of real data based on the empirical moment generating function.  相似文献

This paper considers various unresolved inference problems for the skewnormal distribution. We give reasons as to why the direct parameterization should not be used as a general basis for estimation, and consider method of moments and maximum likelihood estimation for the distribution's centred parameterization. Large sample theory results are given for the method of moments estimators, and numerical approaches for obtaining maximum likelihood estimates are discussed. Simulation is used to assess the performance of the two types of estimation. We also present procedures for testing for departures from the limiting folded normal distribution. Data on the percentage body fat of elite athletes are used to illustrate some of the issues raised.  相似文献

In this study, we present different estimation procedures for the parameters of the Poisson–exponential distribution, such as the maximum likelihood, method of moments, modified moments, ordinary and weighted least-squares, percentile, maximum product of spacings, Cramer–von Mises and the Anderson–Darling maximum goodness-of-fit estimators and compare them using extensive numerical simulations. We showed that the Anderson–Darling estimator is the most efficient for estimating the parameters of the proposed distribution. Our proposed methodology was also illustrated in three real data sets related to the minimum, average and the maximum flows during October at São Carlos River in Brazil demonstrating that the PE distribution is a simple alternative to be used in hydrological applications.  相似文献

In this article, we introduce a new circular distribution to be called as wrapped Lindley distribution and derive expressions for characteristic function, trigonometric moments, coefficients of skewness, and kurtosis. Method of maximum likelihood estimation is used for the estimation of parameters. We carry out a simulation study to show that the obtained maximum likelihood estimator is consistent. The proposed model is also applied to a real-life dataset, and its performance is compared with that of wrapped exponential distribution.  相似文献

The problem of estimating population parameters based upon grouped data is considered and several alternative estimation schemes such as the method of scoring, least lines, least squares, minimum chi square, and a method of approximating method of moments and maximum likelihood estimators are considered. These estimators are compared with maximum likelihood and method of moments estimators based upon individual observations using a Monte Carlo study where the parent population is characterized by a gamma distribution. An application of these techniques to fitting a gamma distribution to 1970-74 census income data is considered.  相似文献

Statistical inference for the diffusion coefficients of multivariate diffusion processes has been well established in recent years; however, it is not the case for the drift coefficients. Furthermore, most existing estimation methods for the drift coefficients are proposed under the assumption that the diffusion matrix is positive definite and time homogeneous. In this article, we put forward two estimation approaches for estimating the drift coefficients of the multivariate diffusion models with the time inhomogeneously positive semidefinite diffusion matrix. They are maximum likelihood estimation methods based on both the martingale representation theorem and conditional characteristic functions and the generalized method of moments based on conditional characteristic functions, respectively. Consistency and asymptotic normality of the generalized method of moments estimation are also proved in this article. Simulation results demonstrate that these methods work well.  相似文献

Consideration is given here to the problem of maximum likelihood estimation of parameters in a sparial discrimination model which was proposed by switzer (1980). some moments of these estimators are derived. These results extend the work of Mardia (1984) who gave expressions for these estimators without their moments.  相似文献

This paper contributes to the problem of estimation of state space model parameters by proposing estimators for the mean, the autoregressive parameters and the noise variances which, contrarily to maximum likelihood, may be calculated without assuming any specific distribution for the errors. The estimators suggested widen the scope of the application of the generalized method of moments to some heteroscedastic models, as in the case of state-space models with varying coefficients, and give sufficient conditions for their consistency. The paper includes a simulation study comparing the proposed estimators with maximum likelihood estimators. Finally, these methods are applied to the calibration of the meteorological radar and estimation of area rainfall.  相似文献

A new bivariate beta distribution capable of providing better fits than all its competitors is introduced. Various representations are derived for its product moments, marginal densities, marginal moments, conditional densities and conditional moments. The method of maximum likelihood is used to derive the associated estimation procedure. Applications to six bivariate data sets are illustrated.  相似文献

Based on progressively Type-I interval censored sample, the problem of estimating unknown parameters of a two parameter generalized half-normal(GHN) distribution is considered. Different methods of estimation are discussed. They include the maximum likelihood estimation, midpoint approximation method, approximate maximum likelihood estimation, method of moments, and estimation based on probability plot. Several Bayesian estimates with respect to different symmetric and asymmetric loss functions such as squared error, LINEX, and general entropy is calculated. The Lindley’s approximation method is applied to determine Bayesian estimates. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to compare the performances of the different methods. Finally, analysis is also carried out for a real dataset.  相似文献

This article deals with the estimation of the lognormal-Pareto and the lognormal-generalized Pareto distributions, for which a general result concerning asymptotic optimality of maximum likelihood estimation cannot be proved. We develop a method based on probability weighted moments, showing that it can be applied straightforwardly to the first distribution only. In the lognormal-generalized Pareto case, we propose a mixed approach combining maximum likelihood and probability weighted moments. Extensive simulations analyze the relative efficiencies of the methods in various setups. Finally, the techniques are applied to two real datasets in the actuarial and operational risk management fields.  相似文献

The purpose of this article is to investigate estimation and hypothesis testing by maximum likelihood and method of moments in functional models within the class of elliptical symmetric distributions. The main results encompass consistency and asymptotic normality of the method of moments estimators. Also, the asymptotic covariance matrix of the maximum likelihood estimator is derived, extending some existing results in elliptical distributions. A measure of asymptotic relative efficiency is reported. Wald-type statistics are considered and numerical results obtained by Monte Carlo simulation to investigate the performance of estimators and tests are provided for Student-t and contaminated normal distributions. An application to a real dataset is also included.  相似文献

We present a methodology for computing the point and interval maximum likelihood parameter estimation for the two-parameter generalized Pareto distribution (GPD) with censored data. The basic idea underlying our method is a reduction of the two-dimensional numerical search for the zeros of the GPD log-likelihood gradient vector to a one-dimensional numerical search. We describe a computationally efficient algorithm which implement this approach. Two illustrative examples are presented. Simulation results indicate that the estimates derived by maximum likelihood estimation are more reliable against those of method of moments. An evaluation of the practical sample size requirements for the asymptotic normality is also included.  相似文献

Two bimatrix distributions with beta and gamma marginals are introduced. Various properties (including product moments of determinants and traces, entropies, marginal distributions) are derived. Parameter estimation by the method of maximum likelihood is discussed. The performance and efficiencies of the maximum likelihood estimators and the associated confidence intervals are assessed by simulation. The efficiencies are compared versus those for the maximum likelihood estimators and the associated confidence intervals based on matrix variate gamma distributions. A discussion of possible applications of the bimatrix distributions is given.  相似文献

Multivariate Logit models are convenient to describe multivariate correlated binary choices as they provide closed-form likelihood functions. However, the computation time required for calculating choice probabilities increases exponentially with the number of choices, which makes maximum likelihood-based estimation infeasible when many choices are considered. To solve this, we propose three novel estimation methods: (i) stratified importance sampling, (ii) composite conditional likelihood (CCL), and (iii) generalized method of moments, which yield consistent estimates and still have similar small-sample bias to maximum likelihood. Our simulation study shows that computation times for CCL are much smaller and that its efficiency loss is small.  相似文献

This paper develops a natural conjugate prior for the non-homogeneous Poisson process (NHPP) with a power law intensity function. This prior allows for dependence between the scale factor and the aging rate of the NHPP. The proposed prior has relatively simple closed-form expressions for its moments, facilitating the assessment of prior parameters. The use of this prior in Bayesian estimation is compared to other estimation approaches using Monte Carlo simulation. The results show that Bayesian estimation using the proposed prior generally performs at least as well as either maximum likelihood estimation or Bayesian estimation using independent prior  相似文献

In this article, we define and study a new three-parameter model called the Marshall–Olkin extended generalized Lindley distribution. We derive various structural properties of the proposed model including expansions for the density function, ordinary moments, moment generating function, quantile function, mean deviations, Bonferroni and Lorenz curves, order statistics and their moments, Rényi entropy and reliability. We estimate the model parameters using the maximum likelihood technique of estimation. We assess the performance of the maximum likelihood estimators in a simulation study. Finally, by means of two real datasets, we illustrate the usefulness of the new model.  相似文献
