This paper discusses the bootstrap test of entropies. Since the comparison of entropies is of prime interest in applied fields, finding an appropriate way to carry out such a comparison is of utmost importance. This paper presents how resampling should be performed to obtain an accurate p-value. Although the test using a pair-wise bootstrap confidence interval (CI) has already been dealt with in few works, here the bootstrap tests are studied because it may demand quite a different resampling algorithm compared with the CI. Moreover, the multiple test is studied. The proposed tests appear to yield several appreciable advantages. The easy implementation and the power of the proposed test can be considered as advantages. Here the entropy of the discrete variable is studied. The proposed tests are examined using Monte Carlo investigations and also evaluated using various distributions.  相似文献

A modification of Kendall's test for independence is described which allows one to test for association in a bivariate distribution as measured by Kendall's tau, a property not shared by Kendall's procedure. The proposed procedure, however, still provides an exactly distribution-free test of independence. The test procedure is inverted to obtain a confidence interval for tau which has distinct advantages over the currently employed confidence interval.  相似文献

In survival analysis, it is routine to test equality of two survival curves, which is often conducted by using the log-rank test. Although it is optimal under the proportional hazards assumption, the log-rank test is known to have little power when the survival or hazard functions cross. To test the overall homogeneity of hazard rate functions, we propose a group of partitioned log-rank tests. By partitioning the time axis and taking the supremum of the sum of two partitioned log-rank statistics over different partitioning points, the proposed test gains enormous power for cases with crossing hazards. On the other hand, when the hazards are indeed proportional, our test still maintains high power close to that of the optimal log-rank test. Extensive simulation studies are conducted to compare the proposed test with existing methods, and three real data examples are used to illustrate the commonality of crossing hazards and the advantages of the partitioned log-rank tests.  相似文献

The properties of a distribution-free rank-like test proposed by Moses (1963) for the twosample scale problem is studied and a modification of the test using Savage scores is proposed. It is shown that this rank-like test is superior to commonly used rank tests for scale in that it:(1) does not require the estimation of any location or centrality parameter, (2) does not require equal or known location parameters, (3) is robust for skewed data, (4) is resolving and (5) has some significant power advantages. The test is shown to be asymptotically normal, and asymptotic relative efficiencies are calculated. Power properties, studied via simulation, indicate that the test is especially well suited for testing for equality of scale when the data are sampled from skewed populations with unequal medians. Extensions to the J-sample problem are indicated.  相似文献

Suppose the same nonlinear function involving k parameters is fit to each of t populations. Suppose further it is of interest to compare a specific parameter of the models across the populations. Such comparisons can be expressed as linear hypotheses about the parameters of the nonlinear models. A weighted linear least squares (WLLS) procedure is proposed to test these linear hypotheses. The advantages and disadvantages of the WLLS procedure are discussed. This procedure is also compared to a nonlinear least squares procedure for testing these hypotheses in nonlinear models.  相似文献

Several methods exist for the problem of testing the equality of several treatments against the one-sided alternative that the treatments are better than the control. These methods include Dunnett's test, Bartholomew's likelihood-ratio test, the Abelson-Tukey-Schaafsma-Smid optimal-contrast test, and the multiple-contrast test of Mukerjee, Robertson, and Wright. A new test is proposed based on an approximation of the likelihood-ratio test of Bartholomew. This test involves using a circular cone in place of the alternative-hypothesis cone. The circular-cone test has excellent power characteristics similar to those of Bartholomew's test. Moreover, it has the advantages of being simpler to compute and may be used with unequal sample sizes.  相似文献

We estimate sib–sib correlation by maximizing the log-likelihood of a Kotz-type distribution. Using extensive simulations we conclude that estimating sib–sib correlation using the proposed method has many advantages. Results are illustrated on a real life data set due to Galton. Testing of hypothesis about this correlation is also discussed using the three likelihood based tests and a test based on Srivastava's estimator. It is concluded that score test derived using Kotz-type density performs the best.  相似文献

We propose a multivariate extension of the univariate chi-squared normality test. Using a known result for the distribution of quadratic forms in normal variables, we show that the proposed test statistic has an approximated chi-squared distribution under the null hypothesis of multivariate normality. As in the univariate case, the new test statistic is based on a comparison of observed and expected frequencies for specified events in sample space. In the univariate case, these events are the standard class intervals, but in the multivariate extension we propose these become hyper-ellipsoidal annuli in multivariate sample space. We assess the performance of the new test using Monte Carlo simulation. Keeping the type I error rate fixed, we show that the new test has power that compares favourably with other standard normality tests, though no uniformly most powerful test has been found. We recommend the new test due to its competitive advantages.  相似文献

A new class of nonparametric tests, based on random projections, is proposed. They can be used for several null hypotheses of practical interest, including uniformity for spherical (directional) and compositional data, sphericity of the underlying distribution and homogeneity in two-sample problems on the sphere or the simplex. The proposed procedures have a number of advantages, mostly associated with their flexibility (for example, they also work to test “partial uniformity” in a subset of the sphere), computational simplicity and ease of application even in high-dimensional cases.  相似文献

For testing the equality of two survival functions, the weighted logrank test and the weighted Kaplan–Meier test are the two most widely used methods. Actually, each of these tests has advantages and defects against various alternatives, while we cannot specify in advance the possible types of the survival differences. Hence, how to choose a single test or combine a number of competitive tests for indicating the diversities of two survival functions without suffering a substantial loss in power is an important issue. Instead of directly using a particular test which generally performs well in some situations and poorly in others, we further consider a class of tests indexed by a weighted parameter for testing the equality of two survival functions in this paper. A delete-1 jackknife method is implemented for selecting weights such that the variance of the test is minimized. Some numerical experiments are performed under various alternatives for illustrating the superiority of the proposed method. Finally, the proposed testing procedure is applied to two real-data examples as well.  相似文献

Testing the equality of variances of two linear models with common β-parameter is considered. A test based on least squares residuals (ASR test) is proposed, and it is shown that this test is invariant under the group of scale and translation changes. For some special cases, it is also proved that this test has a monotone power function. Finding the exact critical values of this test is not easy; an approximation is given to facilitate the computation of these. The powers of the BLUS test, the F-test and the new test are computed for various alternatives and compared in a particular case. The proposed test seems to be locally more powerful than the alternative tests.  相似文献

Two-way ANOVA methodology is surely one of the most important models in the framework of the experimental design theory, as suggested by the great number of proposed solutions given in literature. Among these, some solutions are nonparametric and particularly, thanks to the availability of modern powerful computing equipments, those based on conditional on observations permutation test have gained great interest. The aim of this work is to present and compare such proposals and to illustrate their possible advantages and disadvantages when applied to some real data-sets.  相似文献

This paper proposes an overlapping-based test statistic for testing the equality of two exponential distributions with different scale and location parameters. The test statistic is defined as the maximum likelihood estimate of the Weitzman's overlapping coefficient, which estimates the agreement of two densities. The proposed test statistic is derived in closed form. Simulated critical points are generated for the proposed test statistic for various sample sizes and significance levels via Monte Carlo Simulations. Statistical powers of the proposed test are computed via simulation studies and compared to those of the existing Log likelihood ratio test.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the long-run availability of a parallel system having several independent renewable components with exponentially distributed failure and repair times. We are interested in testing availability of the system or constructing a lower confidence bound for the availability by using component test data. For this problem, there is no exact test or confidence bound available and only approximate methods are available in the literature. Using the generalized p-value approach, an exact test and a generalized confidence interval are given. An example is given to illustrate the proposed procedures. A simulation study is given to demonstrate their advantages over the other available approximate procedures. Based on type I and type II error rates, the simulation study shows that the generalized procedures outperform the other available methods.  相似文献

The problem of estimation of the mean vector of a multivariate normal distribution with unknown covariance matrix, under uncertain prior information (UPI) that the component mean vectors are equal, is considered. The shrinkage preliminary test maximum likelihood estimator (SPTMLE) for the parameter vector is proposed. The risk and covariance matrix of the proposed estimato are derived and parameter range in which SPTMLE dominates the usual preliminary test maximum likelihood estimator (PTMLE) is investigated. It is shown that the proposed estimator provides a wider range than the usual premilinary test estimator in which it dominates the classical estimator. Further, the SPTMLE has more appropriate size for the preliminary test than the PTMLE.  相似文献

In a two-sample testing problem, sometimes one of the sample observations are difficult and/or costlier to collect compared to the other one. Also, it may be the situation that sample observations from one of the populations have been previously collected and for operational advantages we do not wish to collect any more observations from the second population that are necessary for reaching a decision. Partially sequential technique is found to be very useful in such situations. The technique gained its popularity in statistics literature due to its very nature of capitalizing the best aspects of both fixed and sequential procedures. The literature is enriched with various types of partially sequential techniques useable under different types of data set-up. Nonetheless, there is no mention of multivariate data framework in this context, although very common in practice. The present paper aims at developing a class of partially sequential nonparametric test procedures for two-sample multivariate continuous data. For this we suggest a suitable stopping rule adopting inverse sampling technique and propose a class of test statistics based on the samples drawn using the suggested sampling scheme. Various asymptotic properties of the proposed tests are explored. An extensive simulation study is also performed to study the asymptotic performance of the tests. Finally the benefit of the proposed test procedure is demonstrated with an application to a real-life data on liver disease.  相似文献

A numerically feasible algorithm is proposed for maximum likelihood estimation of the parameters of the Dirichlet distribution. The performance of the proposed method is compared with the method of moments using bias ratio and squared errors by Monte Carlo simulation. For these criteria, it is found that even in small samples maximum likelihood estimation has advantages over the method of moments.  相似文献

For the comparison of two groups of survival times subject to censoring the log-rank test is widely used. The log-rank test is known to be asymptotically fully efficient for the proportional hazards alternatives. But if the ratio of the hazards changes, the log-rank test may not detect the difference between the two groups. In this article a new test procedure is proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed test procedure provides good power against alternatives, where the hazard ratio between the two groups changes across 1.  相似文献

In this paper, we suggest a least squares procedure for the determination of the number of upper outliers in an exponential sample by minimizing sample mean squared error. Moreover, the method can reduce the masking or “swamping” effects. In addition, we have also found that the least squares procedure is easy and simple to compute than test test procedure T k suggested by Zhang (1998) for determining the number of upper outliers, since Zhang (1998) need to use the complicated null distribution of T k . Moreover, we give three practical examples and a simulated example to illustrate the procedures. Further, simulation studies are given to show the advantages of the proposed method. Finally, the proposed least squares procedure can also determine the number of upper outliers in other continuous univariate distributions (for example, Pareto, Gumbel, Weibull, etc.). For the sign testing problem about the normal variances, we develop the heuristic testing procedure based on the concept of generalized test variable and generalized p-value. A detailed simulation study is conducted to empirically investigate the performance of the proposed method. Through the simulation study, especially in small sample sizes, the proposed test not only adequately controls empirical size at the nominal level, but also uniformly more powerful than likelihood ratio test, Gutmann's test, Li and Sinha's test and Liu and Chan's test, showing that the proposed method can be recommended in practice. The proposed method is illustrated with the published data.  相似文献
