This article proposes Hartley-Ross type unbiased estimators of finite population mean using information on known parameters of auxiliary variate when the study variate and auxiliary variate are positively correlated. The variances of the proposed unbiased estimators are obtained. It has been shown that the proposed estimators are more efficient than the simple mean estimator, usual ratio estimator and estimators proposed by Sisodia and Dwivedi (1981 Sisodia , B. V. S. , Dwivedi , V. K. ( 1981 ). A modified ratio estimator using coefficient of variation of auxiliary variable . J. Indian Soc. This article addresses the problem of estimating of finite population variance using auxiliary information in simple random sampling. A ratio-cum-difference type class of estimators for population variance has been suggested with its properties under large sample approximation. This paper suggests an efficient class of ratio and product estimators for estimating the population mean in stratified random sampling using auxiliary information. It is interesting to mention that, in addition to many, Koyuncu and Kadilar (2009 Koyuncu , N. , Kadilar , C. ( 2009 ). Ratio and product estimators in stratified random sampling . J. Statist. Plann. This article suggests an improved class of estimators under the general framework of two-phase sampling scheme in presence of two auxiliary variables. Here, we apply the smoothing technique proposed by Chaubey et al. (2007 Chaubey , Y. P. , Sen , A. , Sen , P. K. ( 2007 ). A new smooth density estimator for non-negative random variables. The asymptotic properties of the resulting estimators are studied and contrasted with some other competing estimators. A simulation study is carried out comparing the recent estimator based on the Poisson weights (Chaubey et al., 2011 Chaubey , Y. P. , Dewan , I. , Li , J. ( 2011 ). This article addresses the problem of estimating the population mean in stratified random sampling using the information of an auxiliary variable. A class of estimators for population mean is defined with its properties under large sample approximation. In particular, various classes of estimators are identified as particular member of the suggested class. It has been shown that the proposed class of estimators is better than usual unbiased estimator, usual combined ratio estimator, usual product estimator, usual regression estimator and Koyuncu and Kadilar (2009 Koyuncu, N., Kadilar, C. In a mixture experiment the measured response is assumed to depend only on the relative proportion of ingredients or components present in the mixture. Scheffe (1958 Scheffe , H. ( 1958 ). Experiments with mixtures . J. R. Statist. Soc. B 20 : 344360 . [Google Scholar], 1963 Scheffe , H. ( 1963 ). Simplex – centroid design for experiments with mixtures . J. R. Statist. Soc. Optimum designs for the estimation of parameters of different mixture models are available in the literature. The problem of estimating the optimum proportion of mixture components is of great practical importance. Pal and Mandal (2006 Pal , M. , Mandal , N. K. ( 2006 ). Optimum designs for optimum mixtures . Statist. Probab. Lett. 76 ( 13 ): 13691379 .[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar], 2007 Pal , M. , Mandal , N. K. (2007). Optimum mixture design via equivalence theory. communicated. JCISS 32:107126. [Google Scholar]) attempted to find a solution to this problem by adopting a pseudo-Bayesian approach and using the trace criterion. Subsequently, Pal and Mandal (2008 Pal , M. , Mandal , N. K. ( 2008 ). Minimax designs for optimum mixtures . To appear in Statist. Probab. Response surface designs for estimating the optimal point . Calcutta Statist. Assoc. Recently, Koyuncu et al. (2013 Koyuncu, N., Gupta, S., Sousa, R. (2014). Exponential type estimators of the mean of a sensitive variable in the presence of non-sensitive auxiliary information. Communications in Statistics- Simulation and Computation[PubMed], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]) proposed an exponential type estimator to improve the efficiency of mean estimator based on randomized response technique. In this article, we propose an improved exponential type estimator which is more efficient than the Koyuncu et al. (2013 Koyuncu, N., Gupta, S., Sousa, R. (2014). Exponential type estimators of the mean of a sensitive variable in the presence of non-sensitive auxiliary information. Communications in Statistics- Simulation and Computation[PubMed], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]) estimator, which in turn was shown to be more efficient than the usual mean estimator, ratio estimator, regression estimator, and the Gupta et al. (2012 Gupta, S., Shabbir, J., Sousa, R., Corte-Real, P. (2012). Regression estimation of the mean of a sensitive variable in the presence of auxiliary information. Communications in Statistics – Theory and Methods 41:23942404.[Taylor &; Francis Online], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]) estimator. Under simple random sampling without replacement (SRSWOR) scheme, bias and mean square error expressions for the proposed estimator are obtained up to first order of approximation and comparisons are made with the Koyuncu et al. (2013 Koyuncu, N., Gupta, S., Sousa, R. (2014). Exponential type estimators of the mean of a sensitive variable in the presence of non-sensitive auxiliary information. Communications in Statistics- Simulation and Computation[PubMed], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]) estimator. A simulation study is used to observe the performances of these two estimators. Theoretical findings are also supported by a numerical example with real data. We also show how to, extend the proposed estimator to the case when more than one auxiliary variable is available.  相似文献

Sanaullah et al. (2014 Sanaullah, A., Ali, H.M., Noor ul Amin, M., Hanif, M. (2014). Generalized exponential chain ratio estimators under stratified two-phase random sampling. Appl. Math. However, the bias and mean square error (MSE) expressions presented in that work need some corrections, and consequently the study based on efficiency comparison also requires corrections. In this article, we revisit Sanaullah et al. (2014 Sanaullah, A., Ali, H.M., Noor ul Amin, M., Hanif, M. (2014). Generalized exponential chain ratio estimators under stratified two-phase random sampling. Appl. Math. We also propose an estimator which is more efficient than several competing estimators including the classes of estimators in Sanaullah et al. (2014 Sanaullah, A., Ali, H.M., Noor ul Amin, M., Hanif, M. (2014). Generalized exponential chain ratio estimators under stratified two-phase random sampling. Appl. Math. In this article, another version of the generalized exponential geometric distribution different to that of Silva et al. (2010 Silva , R. B. , Barreto-Souza , W. , Cordeiro , G. M. ( 2010 ). A new distribution with decreasing, increasing and upside-down bathtub failure rate. Computat. Statist. Data Anal. 54: 935–944 . [Google Scholar]) is proposed. This new three-parameter lifetime distribution with decreasing, increasing, and bathtub failure rate function is created by compounding the generalized exponential distribution of Gupta and Kundu (1999 Gupta , R. D. , Kundu , D. ( 1999 ). Generalized exponential distributions . Austral. NZ J. Statist. 41 ( 2 ): 173188 .[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]) with a geometric distribution. Some basic distributional properties, moment-generating function, rth moment, and Rényi entropy of the new distribution are studied. The model parameters are estimated by the maximum likelihood method and the asymptotic distribution of estimators is discussed. Finally, an application of the new distribution is illustrated using the two real data sets.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The article suggests a class of estimators of population mean in stratified random sampling using auxiliary information with its properties. In addition, various known estimators/classes of estimators are identified as members of the suggested class. This paper addresses the problem of estimating a general parameter using information on an auxiliary variable X. We have suggested a class of exponential-type ratio estimators for the parameter and its properties are studied. It is identified that the estimators due to Upadhyaya et al. [Journal of Statistical Theory and Practice (2011), 5(2), 285–302] and Yadav and Kadilar [Revista Columbiana de Estadistica, (2013), 36(1), 145–152] are members of the proposed estimator. We have also shown that the suggested estimator is more efficient than the estimators of Upadhyaya et al. (2011 Upadhyaya, L.N., Singh, H.P., Chatterjee, S., Yadav, R. (2011). Improved ratio and product exponential type estimators. J. Stat. Theo. Pract. 5 (2): 285302.[Taylor &; Francis Online] [Google Scholar]) and Yadav and Kadilar (2013 Yadav, S.K., Kadilar, C. (2013). The inverse Gaussian distribution is often suited for modeling positive and/or positively skewed data (see Chhikara and Folks, 1989 Chhikara , R. S. , Folks , J. L. ( 1989 ). The Inverse Gaussian Distribution . New York : Marcel Dekker . [Google Scholar]) and presents an interesting alternative to the Gaussian model in such cases. We note here that overlap coefficients and their variants are widely studied in the literature for Gaussian populations (see Mulekar and Mishra, 1994 Mulekar , M. , Mishra , S. N. ( 1994 ). Overlap coefficients of two normal densities: equal means case . J. Japan. Statist. Soc. 24 : 169180 . [Google Scholar], 2000 Mulekar , M. , Mishra , S. N. ( 2000 ). Confidence interval estimation of overlap: equal means case . Computat. Statist. Data Anal. 34 : 121137 .[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar], and references therein for further details). This article studies the properties and addresses point estimation for large samples of commonly used measures of overlap when the populations are described by inverse Gaussian distributions. The bias and mean square error properties of the estimators are studied through a simulation study.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the effect of pre-smoothing on model selection. Christóbal et al 6 Christóbal Christóbal, J. A., Faraldo Roca, P. and González Manteiga, W. 1987. A class of linear regression parameter estimators constructed by nonparametric estimation. Ann. Statist.,, 15: 603609. [Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar] showed the beneficial effect of pre-smoothing on estimating the parameters in a linear regression model. Here, in a regression setting, we show that smoothing the response data prior to model selection by Akaike's information criterion can lead to an improved selection procedure. The bootstrap is used to control the magnitude of the random error structure in the smoothed data. The effect of pre-smoothing on model selection is shown in simulations. The method is illustrated in a variety of settings, including the selection of the best fractional polynomial in a generalized linear model.  相似文献

Nonparametric density and regression estimators commonly depend on a bandwidth. The asymptotic properties of these estimators have been widely studied when bandwidths are non stochastic. In practice, however, in order to improve finite sample performance of these estimators, bandwidths are selected by data driven methods, such as cross-validation or plug-in procedures. As a result, nonparametric estimators are usually constructed using stochastic bandwidths. In this article, we establish the asymptotic equivalence in probability of local polynomial regression estimators under stochastic and nonstochastic bandwidths. Our result extends previous work by Boente and Fraiman (1995 Boente , G. , Fraiman , R. ( 1995 ). This article generalizes results from Park et al. (1998 Park , B. U. , Sickles , R. C. , Simar , L. ( 1998 ). Stochastic frontiers: a semiparametric approach . J. Econometrics 84 : 273301 .[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]) and Adams et al. (1999 Adams , R. M. , Berger , A. N. , Sickles , R. C. ( 1999 ). Semiparametric approaches to stochastic panel frontiers with applications in the banking industry . J. Bus. Econ. Statist. 17 : 349358 .[Taylor & Francis Online] [Google Scholar]) on semiparametric efficient estimation of panel models. The form of semiparametric efficient estimators depends on the statistical assumptions imposed. Normality assumptions on the transitory error are sometimes inappropriate. We relax the normality assumption used in the articles above to derive more general semiparametric efficient estimators. These estimators are illustrated in a Monte Carlo simulation and an analysis of banking productivity.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The systematic sampling (SYS) design (Madow and Madow, 1944 Madow , L. H. , Madow , W. G. ( 1944 ). On the theory of systematic sampling . Ann. Math. Statist. 15 : 124 .[Crossref] [Google Scholar]) is widely used by statistical offices due to its simplicity and efficiency (e.g., Iachan, 1982 Iachan , R. ( 1982 ). Systematic sampling a critical review . Int. Statist. Rev. 50 : 293303 .[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]). But it suffers from a serious defect, namely, that it is impossible to unbiasedly estimate the sampling variance (Iachan, 1982 Iachan , R. ( 1982 ). Systematic sampling a critical review . Int. Statist. Rev. 50 : 293303 .[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]) and usual variance estimators (Yates and Grundy, 1953 Yates , F. , Grundy , P. M. ( 1953 ). Selection without replacement from within strata with probability proportional to size . J. Roy. Statist. Soc. Series B 1 : 253261 . [Google Scholar]) are inadequate and can overestimate the variance significantly (Särndal et al., 1992 Särndal , C. E. , Swenson , B. , Wretman , J. H. ( 1992 ). Model Assisted Survey Sampling . New York : Springer-Verlag , Ch. 3 .[Crossref] [Google Scholar]). We propose a novel variance estimator which is less biased and that can be implemented with any given population order. We will justify this estimator theoretically and with a Monte Carlo simulation study.  相似文献

In this article, we introduce a new two-parameter estimator by grafting the contraction estimator into the modified ridge estimator proposed by Swindel (1976 Swindel , B. F. ( 1976 ). Good ridge estimators based on prior information . Commun. Statist. Theor. Meth. A5 : 10651075 .[Taylor & Francis Online], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]). This new two-parameter estimator is a general estimator which includes the ordinary least squares, the ridge, the Liu, and the contraction estimators as special cases. Furthermore, by setting restrictions Rβ = r on the parameter values we introduce a new restricted two-parameter estimator which includes the well-known restricted least squares, the restricted ridge proposed by Groß (2003 Groß , J. ( 2003 ). Restricted ridge estimation . Statist. Probab. Lett. 65 : 5764 .[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]), the restricted contraction estimators, and a new restricted Liu estimator which we call the modified restricted Liu estimator different from the restricted Liu estimator proposed by Kaç?ranlar et al. (1999 Kaç?ranlar , S. , Sakall?o?lu , S. , Akdeniz , F. , Styan , G. P. H. , Werner , H. J. ( 1999 ). A new biased estimator in linear regression and a detailed analysis of the widely-analysed dataset on Portland cement . Sankhya Ser. B., Ind. J. Statist. 61 : 443459 . [Google Scholar]). We also obtain necessary and sufficient condition for the superiority of the new two-parameter estimator over the ordinary least squares estimator and the comparison of the new restricted two-parameter estimator to the new two-parameter estimator is done by the criterion of matrix mean square error. The estimators of the biasing parameters are given and a simulation study is done for the comparison as well as the determination of the biasing parameters.  相似文献
