We consider the Bayesian D-optimal design problem for exponential growth models with one, two or three parameters. For the one-parameter model conditions on the shape of the density of the prior distribution and on the range of its support are given guaranteeing that a one-point design is also Bayesian D-optimal within the class of all designs. In the case of two parameters the best two-point designs are determined and for special prior distributions it is proved that these designs are Bayesian D-optimal. Finally, the exponential growth model with three parameters is investigated. The best three-point designs are characterized by a nonlinear equation. The global optimality of these designs cannot be proved analytically and it is demonstrated that these designs are also Bayesian D-optimal within the class of all designs if gamma-distributions are used as prior distributions.  相似文献

We introduce new criteria for model discrimination and use these and existing criteria to evaluate standard orthogonal designs. We show that the capability of orthogonal designs for model discrimination is surprisingly varied. In fact, for specified sample sizes, number of factors, and model spaces, many orthogonal designs are not model discriminating by the definition given in this paper, while others in the same class of orthogonal designs are. We also use these criteria to construct optimal two-level model-discriminating designs for screening experiments. The efficacy of these designs is studied, both in terms of estimation efficiency and discrimination success. Simulation studies indicate that the constructed designs result in substantively higher likelihoods of identifying the correct model.  相似文献

Equirephcate variance-balanced block designs possess many desirable properties and include several important subclasses of designs, such as balanced incomplete block designs. However, while attention has been paid to the derivation of properties and the construction of these designs, methods of analyzing experiments using these designs have not been developed completely. Thus, we consider models appropriate to these designs, construct test statistics for basic hypotheses and derive the distributions for these statistics. Four additive models that include all of the possible combinations of fixed and random effects are examined. The analyses are generalizations of the analyses for balanced incomplete block designs, and include the intra-block, intra-treatment and inter-block analyses, Estimators of fixed treatment effects and their distributions also are given.  相似文献

In experiments with mixtures involving process variables, orthogonal block designs may be used to allow estimation of the parameters of the mixture components independently of estimation of the parameters of the process variables. In the class of orthogonally blocked designs based on pairs of suitably chosen Latin squares, the optimal designs consist primarily of binary blends of the mixture components, regardless of how many ingredients are available for the mixture. This paper considers ways of modifying these optimal designs so that some or all of the runs used in the experiment include a minimum proportion of each mixture ingredient. The designs considered are nearly optimal in the sense that the experimental points are chosen to follow ridges of maxima in the optimality criteria. Specific designs are discussed for mixtures involving three and four components and distinctions are identified for different designs with the same optimality properties. The ideas presented for these specific designs are readily extended to mixtures with q>4 components.  相似文献

Some new neighbor designs are presented here. Second-order neighbor designs for different configurations are generated in circular binary blocks. Third-order and fourth-order neighbor designs for some cases are also constructed. In all cases, circular blocks are well separated and these designs are obtained through initial block/s. Logistic functions are used in different applications, including biological growth studies and assay data analysis. Locally D-optimal designs for logistic models with three and four parameters are investigated. It is shown that these designs are minimally supported. Designing an experiment to fit a response surface model typically involves selecting among several candidate designs. There are often many competing criteria that could be considered in selecting the design, and practitioners are typically forced to make trade-offs between these objectives when choosing the final design. Traditional alphabetic optimality criteria are often used in evaluating and comparing competing designs. These optimality criteria are single-number summaries for quality properties of the design such as the precision with which the model parameters are estimated or the uncertainty associated with prediction. Other important considerations include the robustness of the design to model misspecification and potential problems arising from spurious or missing data. Several qualitative and quantitative properties of good response surface designs are discussed, and some of their important trade-offs are considered. Graphical methods for evaluating design performance for several important response surface problems are discussed and we show how these techniques can be used to compare competing designs. These graphical methods are generally superior to the simplistic summaries of alphabetic optimality criteria. Several special cases are considered, including robust parameter designs, split-plot designs, mixture experiment designs, and designs for generalized linear models.  相似文献

In this survey paper, measures of optimality of experimental designs are discussed from a combinatorial viewpoint. The main vehicle for this discussion is the regular graph design. This family of designs was introduced in the hope that they would be ‘good’ designs in cases where no balanced incomplete block design can exist. Resolvable block designs for v varieties in blocks of size k require v to be a multiple of k so that all blocks are of the same size. If a factorization of v is not possible then a resolvable design with blocks of unequal size is necessary. Patterson & Williams (1976) suggested the use of designs derived from α -designs and conjectured that such designs are likely to be very efficient in the class of resolvable designs with block sizes k and k – 1. This paper examines these derived designs and compares them with designs generated directly using an interchange algorithm. It concludes that the derived designs should be used when v is large, but that for small v they can be relatively inefficient.  相似文献

Maximin distance designs are useful for conducting expensive computer experiments. In this article, we compare some global optimization algorithms for constructing such designs. We also introduce several related space-filling designs, including nested maximin distance designs, sliced maximin distance designs, and general maximin distance designs with better projection properties. These designs possess more flexible structures than their analogs in the literature. Examples of these designs constructed by the algorithms are presented.  相似文献

This paper extends the work of Russell (1976). Proof Is given that, for many parameter sets, all O:XB designs belonging to the set are connected. It is shown how an (M,S)-optinal design nay be selected from the M-optimal designs of a given parameter set. The efficiencies of these (M,S)-optimal designs are displayed, and it is concluded that the (M,S)-optimality criterion is useful for selecting designs of high efficiency.  相似文献

We demonstrate the existence and uniqueness of optimal observation schedules for discrete observation of the simple death process. Optimality is framed in the sense of observing the process at times that maximise the Fisher information for the death rate. We examine the relationship of our designs with those obtained by other authors for the simple birth process. A number of interesting properties are uncovered. Practical considerations in the application of these designs in an experimental setting are investigated, and we examine the performance of some approximately optimal designs that are usually simpler to implement. We will show that our optimal designs are highly robust to mis-specification of the death rate.  相似文献

In this paper we consider a family of sampling designs for which increasing first‐order inclusion probabilities imply, in a specific sense, increasing conditional inclusion probabilities. It is proved that the complementary Midzuno, the conditional Poisson, and the Sampford designs belong to this family. It is shown that designs of the family are more efficient than a comparable with‐replacement design. Furthermore, the efficiency gain is explicitly given for these designs.  相似文献

The Zernike polynomials arise in several applications such as optical metrology or image analysis on a circular domain. In the present paper, we determine optimal designs for regression models which are represented by expansions in terms of Zernike polynomials. We consider two estimation methods for the coefficients in these models and determine the corresponding optimal designs. The first one is the classical least squares method and Φ p -optimal designs in the sense of Kiefer [Kiefer, J., 1974, General equivalence theory for optimum designs (approximate theory). Annals of Statistics, 2 849–879.] are derived, which minimize an appropriate functional of the covariance matrix of the least squares estimator. It is demonstrated that optimal designs with respect to Kiefer's Φ p -criteria (p>?∞) are essentially unique and concentrate observations on certain circles in the experimental domain. E-optimal designs have the same structure but it is shown in several examples that these optimal designs are not necessarily uniquely determined. The second method is based on the direct estimation of the Fourier coefficients in the expansion of the expected response in terms of Zernike polynomials and optimal designs minimizing the trace of the covariance matrix of the corresponding estimator are determined. The designs are also compared with the uniform designs on a grid, which is commonly used in this context.  相似文献

It is well known that it is difficult to construct minimax optimal designs. Furthermore, since in practice we never know the true error variance, it is important to allow small deviations and construct robust optimal designs. We investigate a class of minimax optimal regression designs for models with heteroscedastic errors that are robust against possible misspecification of the error variance. Commonly used A-, c-, and I-optimality criteria are included in this class of minimax optimal designs. Several theoretical results are obtained, including a necessary condition and a reflection symmetry for these minimax optimal designs. In this article, we focus mainly on linear models and assume that an approximate error variance function is available. However, we also briefly discuss how the methodology works for nonlinear models. We then propose an effective algorithm to solve challenging nonconvex optimization problems to find minimax designs on discrete design spaces. Examples are given to illustrate minimax optimal designs and their properties.  相似文献

Row–column designs for two-level factorial experiments are constructed to estimate all the main effects. We give the interactions for row and column blockings. Based on these blockings, independent treatment combinations are proposed to establish the whole design so that practitioners can easily apply it to their experiments. Some examples are given for illustrations. The estimation of two-factor interactions in these designs is discussed.  相似文献

Response surface designs are widely used in industries like chemicals, foods, pharmaceuticals, bioprocessing, agrochemicals, biology, biomedicine, agriculture and medicine. One of the major objectives of these designs is to study the functional relationship between one or more responses and a number of quantitative input factors. However, biological materials have more run to run variation than in many other experiments, leading to the conclusion that smaller response surface designs are inappropriate. Thus designs to be used in these research areas should have greater replication. Gilmour (2006) introduced a wide class of designs called “subset designs” which are useful in situations in which run to run variation is high. These designs allow the experimenter to fit the second order response surface model. However, there are situations in which the second order model representation proves to be inadequate and unrealistic due to the presence of lack of fit caused by third or higher order terms in the true response surface model. In such situations it becomes necessary for the experimenter to estimate these higher order terms. In this study, the properties of subset designs, in the context of the third order response surface model, are explored.  相似文献

We construct optimal designs for heteroscedastic models when the goal is to make efficient prediction over a compact interval. It is assumed that the point or points which are interesting to predict are not known before the experiment is run. Two minimax strategies for minimizing the maximum fitted variance and maximum predictive variance across the interval of interest are proposed and, optimal designs are found and compared. It is known that n-cyclic designs provide a flexible class of designs suitable for setting out factorial experiments. In this paper we show that many of these designs are resolvable. Further, an extensive class of practically useful designs can be derived from them by deleting replicates. The properties of the designs compare favourably with those obtained by the algorithm of Williams and John (1996) (Appl. Statist. 45, 39–46).  相似文献
