This paper deals with the estimation of reliability for a strength-stress model under ordered restriction on the parameters. It is assumed that components have exponential distributions and are arranged in a parallel system and the failure of one component, results in increasing the failure rate of the remaining components. Results are derived when (i) the ordering of the means is taken into account and when (ii) the ordering of the means is ignored. Simulation studies are carried out to compare the results. It is noticed that, in almost all cases, in case (i) the estimates are closer to the true value with smaller mean squared error (MSE) and smaller’ standard deviation than in case (ii). Thus when the ordering of the means is present in the model, such information should be incorporated in the estimation of reliability.  相似文献

In this paper, the research of Muse and Anderson is extended to include additional comparisons of designs, featuring planned unbalance, for the estimation of variance components in a two-way cross classification model. Their results are extended to Include the following: (i) a small sample study of the original off-diagonal (OD) design and (ii) an asymptotic maximum likelihood investigation of three modifica-tions of the balanced diagonal rectangles (BD) design and one modification of the 01) design to permit the estimation of row, column, interaction and error variance components. Also a general iterative least.  相似文献

This article considers analyzing longitudinal binary data semiparametrically and proposing GEE-Smoothing spline in the estimation of parametric and nonparametric components. The method is an extension of the parametric generalized estimating equation to semiparametric. The nonparametric component is estimated by smoothing spline approach, i.e., natural cubic spline. We use profile algorithm in the estimation of both parametric and nonparametric components. Properties of the estimators are evaluated by simulation.  相似文献

We first consider the estimation of the finite rate of population increase or population growth rate, u i , using capture-recapture data from open populations. We review estimation and modelling of u i under three main approaches to modelling openpopulation data: the classic approach of Jolly (1965) and Seber (1965), the superpopulation approach of Crosbie & Manly (1985) and Schwarz & Arnason (1996), and the temporal symmetry approach of Pradel (1996). Next, we consider the contributions of different demographic components to u i using a probabilistic approach based on the composition of the population at time i + 1 (Nichols et al., 2000b). The parameters of interest are identical to the seniority parameters, n i , of Pradel (1996). We review estimation of n i under the classic, superpopulation, and temporal symmetry approaches. We then compare these direct estimation approaches for u i and n i with analogues computed using projection matrix asymptotics. We also discuss various extensions of the estimation approaches to multistate applications and to joint likelihoods involving multiple data types.  相似文献

In this work, we develop modeling and estimation approach for the analysis of cross-sectional clustered data with multimodal conditional distributions where the main interest is in analysis of subpopulations. It is proposed to model such data in a hierarchical model with conditional distributions viewed as finite mixtures of normal components. With a large number of observations in the lowest level clusters, a two-stage estimation approach is used. In the first stage, the normal mixture parameters in each lowest level cluster are estimated using robust methods. Robust alternatives to the maximum likelihood estimation are used to provide stable results even for data with conditional distributions such that their components may not quite meet normality assumptions. Then the lowest level cluster-specific means and standard deviations are modeled in a mixed effects model in the second stage. A small simulation study was conducted to compare performance of finite normal mixture population parameter estimates based on robust and maximum likelihood estimation in stage 1. The proposed modeling approach is illustrated through the analysis of mice tendon fibril diameters data. Analyses results address genotype differences between corresponding components in the mixtures and demonstrate advantages of robust estimation in stage 1.  相似文献

The so-called linear approach to estimating linear functions of variance and/or covariance components clearly shows the well-known connection between quadratic, invariant and unbiased, estimation and the classical linear theory methods, LSE and BLUE. This approach allows us to consider and to use further results of the linear theory for variance-covariance components estimation. In the present paper the minimax invariant quadratic estimators of linear functions of variance-covariance components under full or partial restrictions on the parameter set are investigated.  相似文献

Probabilistic matching of records is widely used to create linked data sets for use in health science, epidemiological, economic, demographic and sociological research. Clearly, this type of matching can lead to linkage errors, which in turn can lead to bias and increased variability when standard statistical estimation techniques are used with the linked data. In this paper we develop unbiased regression parameter estimates to be used when fitting a linear model with nested errors to probabilistically linked data. Since estimation of variance components is typically an important objective when fitting such a model, we also develop appropriate modifications to standard methods of variance components estimation in order to account for linkage error. In particular, we focus on three widely used methods of variance components estimation: analysis of variance, maximum likelihood and restricted maximum likelihood. Simulation results show that our estimators perform reasonably well when compared to standard estimation methods that ignore linkage errors.  相似文献

Characterization of an optimal vector estimator and an optimal matrix estimator are obtained. In each case appropriate convex loss functions are considered. The results are illustrated through the problems of simultaneous unbiased estimation, simultaneous equivariant estimation and simultaneous unbiased prediction. Further an optimality criterion is proposed for matrix unbiased estimation and it is shown that the matrix unbiased estimation of a matrix parametric function and the minimum variance unbiased estimation of its components are equivalent.  相似文献

This paper proposes the use of the integrated likelihood for inference on the mean effect in small‐sample meta‐analysis for continuous outcomes. The method eliminates the nuisance parameters given by variance components through integration with respect to a suitable weight function, with no need to estimate them. The integrated likelihood approach takes into proper account the estimation uncertainty of within‐study variances, thus providing confidence intervals with empirical coverage closer to nominal levels than standard likelihood methods. The improvement is remarkable when either (i) the number of studies is small to moderate or (ii) the small sample size of the studies does not allow to consider the within‐study variances as known, as common in applications. Moreover, the use of the integrated likelihood avoids numerical pitfalls related to the estimation of variance components which can affect alternative likelihood approaches. The proposed methodology is illustrated via simulation and applied to a meta‐analysis study in nutritional science.  相似文献

This article is devoted to the study of tail index estimation based on i.i.d. multivariate observations, drawn from a standard heavy-tailed distribution, that is, of which Pareto-like marginals share the same tail index. A multivariate central limit theorem for a random vector, whose components correspond to (possibly dependent) Hill estimators of the common tail index α, is established under mild conditions. We introduce the concept of (standard) heavy-tailed random vector of tail index α and show how this limit result can be used in order to build an estimator of α with small asymptotic mean squared error, through a proper convex linear combination of the coordinates. Beyond asymptotic results, simulation experiments illustrating the relevance of the approach promoted are also presented.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We propose a new unsupervised learning algorithm to fit regression mixture models with unknown number of components. The developed approach consists in a penalized maximum likelihood estimation carried out by a robust expectation–maximization (EM)-like algorithm. We derive it for polynomial, spline, and B-spline regression mixtures. The proposed learning approach is unsupervised: (i) it simultaneously infers the model parameters and the optimal number of the regression mixture components from the data as the learning proceeds, rather than in a two-fold scheme as in standard model-based clustering using afterward model selection criteria, and (ii) it does not require accurate initialization unlike the standard EM for regression mixtures. The developed approach is applied to curve clustering problems. Numerical experiments on simulated and real data show that the proposed algorithm performs well and provides accurate clustering results, and confirm its benefit for practical applications.  相似文献

M-quantile regression is defined as a “quantile-like” generalization of robust regression based on influence functions. This article outlines asymptotic properties for the M-quantile regression coefficients estimators in the case of i.i.d. data with stochastic regressors, paying attention to adjustments due to the first-step scale estimation. A variance estimator of the M-quantile regression coefficients based on the sandwich approach is proposed. Empirical results show that this estimator appears to perform well under different simulated scenarios. The sandwich estimator is applied in the small area estimation context for the estimation of the mean squared error of an estimator for the small area means. The results obtained improve previous findings, especially in the case of heteroskedastic data.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the estimation of the unbalanced panel data partially linear models with a one-way error components structure. A weighted semiparametric least squares estimator (WSLSE) is developed using polynomial spline approximation and least squares. We show that the WSLSE is asymptotically more efficient than the corresponding unweighted estimator for both parametric and nonparametric components of the model. This is a significant improvement over previous results in the literature which showed that the simply weighting technique can only improve the estimation of the parametric component. The asymptotic normalities of the proposed WSLSE are also established.  相似文献

Abstract. The zero‐inflated Poisson regression model is a special case of finite mixture models that is useful for count data containing many zeros. Typically, maximum likelihood (ML) estimation is used for fitting such models. However, it is well known that the ML estimator is highly sensitive to the presence of outliers and can become unstable when mixture components are poorly separated. In this paper, we propose an alternative robust estimation approach, robust expectation‐solution (RES) estimation. We compare the RES approach with an existing robust approach, minimum Hellinger distance (MHD) estimation. Simulation results indicate that both methods improve on ML when outliers are present and/or when the mixture components are poorly separated. However, the RES approach is more efficient in all the scenarios we considered. In addition, the RES method is shown to yield consistent and asymptotically normal estimators and, in contrast to MHD, can be applied quite generally.  相似文献

In this paper we consider a binary, monotone system whose component states are dependent through the possible occurrence of independent common shocks, i.e. shocks that destroy several components at once. The individual failure of a component is also thought of as a shock. Such systems can be used to model common cause failures in reliability analysis. The system may be a technological one, or a human being. It is observed until it fails or dies. At this instant, the set of failed components and the failure time of the system are noted. The failure times of the components are not known. These are the so-called autopsy data of the system. For the case of independent components, i.e. no common shocks, Meilijson (1981), Nowik (1990), Antoine et al . (1993) and GTsemyr (1998) discuss the corresponding identifiability problem, i.e. whether the component life distributions can be determined from the distribution of the observed data. Assuming a model where autopsy data is known to be enough for identifia bility, Meilijson (1994) goes beyond the identifiability question and into maximum likelihood estimation of the parameters of the component lifetime distributions based on empirical autopsy data from a sample of several systems. He also considers life-monitoring of some components and conditional life-monitoring of some other. Here a corresponding Bayesian approach is presented for the shock model. Due to prior information one advantage of this approach is that the identifiability problem represents no obstacle. The motivation for introducing the shock model is that the autopsy model is of special importance when components can not be tested separately because it is difficult to reproduce the conditions prevailing in the functioning system. In Gåsemyr & Natvig (1997) we treat the Bayesian approach to life-monitoring and conditional life- monitoring of components  相似文献

In this paper we review some of recent developments in high dimensional data analysis, especially in the estimation of covariance and precision matrix, asymptotic results on the eigenstructure in the principal components analysis, and some relevant issues such as test on the equality of two covariance matrices, determination of the number of principal components, and detection of hubs in a complex network.  相似文献

Classical omnibus and more recent methods are adapted to panel data situations in order to jointly test for normality of the error components. The test statistics incorporate either the empirical distribution function or the empirical characteristic function, these functions resulting from estimation of the fixed and random components. Monte Carlo results show that the new procedure based on the empirical characteristic function compares favorably with classical methods.  相似文献

In this note, we consider estimating the bivariate survival function when both survival times are subject to random left truncation and one of the survival times is subject to random right censoring. Motivated by Satten and Datta [2001. The Kaplan–Meier estimator as an inverse-probability-of-censoring weighted average. Amer. Statist. 55, 207–210], we propose an inverse-probability-weighted (IPW) estimator. It involves simultaneous estimation of the bivariate survival function of the truncation variables and that of the censoring variable and the truncation variable of the uncensored components. We prove that (i) when there is no censoring, the IPW estimator reduces to NPMLE of van der Laan [1996a. Nonparametric estimation of the bivariate survival function with truncated data. J. Multivariate Anal. 58, 107–131] and (ii) when there is random left truncation and right censoring on only one of the components and the other component is always observed, the IPW estimator reduces to the estimator of Gijbels and Gürler [1998. Covariance function of a bivariate distribution function estimator for left truncated and right censored data. Statist. Sin. 1219–1232]. Based on Theorem 3.1 of van der Laan [1996a. Nonparametric estimation of the bivariate survival function with truncated data. J. Multivariate Anal. 58, 107–131, 1996b. Efficient estimation of the bivariate censoring model and repairing NPMLE. Ann. Statist. 24, 596–627], we prove that the IPW estimator is consistent under certain conditions. Finally, we examine the finite sample performance of the IPW estimator in some simulation studies. For the special case that censoring time is independent of truncation time, a simulation study is conducted to compare the performances of the IPW estimator against that of the estimator proposed by van der Laan [1996a. Nonparametric estimation of the bivariate survival function with truncated data. J. Multivariate Anal. 58, 107–131, 1996b. Efficient estimation of the bivariate censoring model and repairing NPMLE. Ann. Statist. 24, 596–627]. For the special case (i), a simulation study is conducted to compare the performances of the IPW estimator against that of the estimator proposed by Huang et al. (2001. Nonnparametric estimation of marginal distributions under bivariate truncation with application to testing for age-of-onset application. Statist. Sin. 11, 1047–1068).

We propose a Bayesian nonparametric procedure for density estimation, for data in a closed, bounded interval, say [0,1]. To this aim, we use a prior based on Bemstein polynomials. This corresponds to expressing the density of the data as a mixture of given beta densities, with random weights and a random number of components. The density estimate is then obtained as the corresponding predictive density function. Comparison with classical and Bayesian kernel estimates is provided. The proposed procedure is illustrated in an example; an MCMC algorithm for approximating the estimate is also discussed.  相似文献
