Abstract

Let the data from the ith treatment/population follow a distribution with cumulative distribution function (cdf) F i (x) = F[(x ? μ i )/θ i ], i = 1,…, k (k ≥ 2). Here μ i (?∞ < μ i  < ∞) is the location parameter, θ i i  > 0) is the scale parameter and F(?) is any absolutely continuous cdf, i.e., F i (?) is a member of location-scale family, i = 1,…, k. In this paper, we propose a class of tests to test the null hypothesis H 0 ? θ1 = · = θ k against the simple ordered alternative H A  ? θ1 ≤ · ≤ θ k with at least one strict inequality. In literature, use of sample quasi range as a measure of dispersion has been advocated for small sample size or sample contaminated by outliers [see David, H. A. (1981). Order Statistics. 2nd ed. New York: John Wiley, Sec. 7.4]. Let X i1,…, X in be a random sample of size n from the population π i and R ir  = X i:n?r  ? X i:r+1, r = 0, 1,…, [n/2] ? 1 be the sample quasi range corresponding to this random sample, where X i:j represents the jth order statistic in the ith sample, j = 1,…, n; i = 1,…, k and [x] is the greatest integer less than or equal to x. The proposed class of tests, for the general location scale setup, is based on the statistic W r  = max1≤i<jk (R jr /R ir ). The test is reject H 0 for large values of W r . The construction of a three-decision procedure and simultaneous one-sided lower confidence bounds for the ratios, θ j i , 1 ≤ i < j ≤ k, have also been discussed with the help of the critical constants of the test statistic W r . Applications of the proposed class of tests to two parameter exponential and uniform probability models have been discussed separately with necessary tables. Comparisons of some members of our class with the tests of Gill and Dhawan [Gill A. N., Dhawan A. K. (1999). A One-sided test for testing homogeneity of scale parameters against ordered alternative. Commun. Stat. – Theory and Methods 28(10):2417–2439] and Kochar and Gupta [Kochar, S. C., Gupta, R. P. (1985). A class of distribution-free tests for testing homogeneity of variances against ordered alternatives. In: Dykstra, R. et al., ed. Proceedings of the Conference on Advances in Order Restricted Statistical Inference at Iowa city. Springer Verlag, pp. 169–183], in terms of simulated power, are also presented.  相似文献

The current financial turbulence in Europe inspires and perhaps requires researchers to rethink how to measure incomes, wealth, and other parameters of interest to policy-makers and others. The noticeable increase in disparities between less and more fortunate individuals suggests that measures based upon comparing the incomes of less fortunate with the mean of the entire population may not be adequate. The classical Gini and related indices of economic inequality, however, are based exactly on such comparisons. It is because of this reason that in this paper we explore and contrast the classical Gini index with a new Zenga index, the latter being based on comparisons of the means of less and more fortunate sub-populations, irrespectively of the threshold that might be used to delineate the two sub-populations. The empirical part of the paper is based on the 2001 wave of the European Community Household Panel data set provided by EuroStat. Even though sample sizes appear to be large, we supplement the estimated Gini and Zenga indices with measures of variability in the form of normal, t-bootstrap, and bootstrap bias-corrected and accelerated confidence intervals.  相似文献

When the survival distribution in a treatment group is a mixture of two distributions of the same family, traditional parametric methods that ignore the existence of mixture components or the nonparametric methods may not be very powerful. We develop a modified likelihood ratio test (MLRT) for testing homogeneity in a two sample problem with censored data and compare the actual type I error and power of the MLRT with that nonparametric log-rank test and parametric test through Monte-Carlo simulations. The proposed test is also applied to analyze data from a clinical trial on early breast cancer.  相似文献

We consider the problem of simultaneously estimating Poisson rate differences via applications of the Hsu and Berger stepwise confidence interval method (termed HBM), where comparisons to a common reference group are performed. We discuss continuity-corrected confidence intervals (CIs) and investigate the HBM performance with a moment-based CI, and uncorrected and corrected for continuity Wald and Pooled confidence intervals (CIs). Using simulations, we compare nine individual CIs in terms of coverage probability and the HBM with nine intervals in terms of family-wise error rate (FWER) and overall and local power. The simulations show that these statistical properties depend highly on parameter settings.  相似文献

The analysis of categorical response data through the multinomial model is very frequent in many statistical, econometric, and biometric applications. However, one of the main problems is the precise estimation of the model parameters when the number of observations is very low. We propose a new Bayesian estimation approach where the prior distribution is constructed through the transformation of the multivariate beta of Olkin and Liu (2003 Olkin , I. , Liu , R. ( 2003 ). A bivariate beta distribution . Stat. Probab. Lett. 62 : 407412 .[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]). Moreover, the application of the zero-variance principle allows us to estimate moments in Monte Carlo simulations with a dramatic reduction of their variances. We show the advantages of our approach through applications to some toy examples, where we get efficient parameter estimates.  相似文献

In this article, we consider investigating whether any of k treatments are better than a control under the assumption of each treatment mean being no less than the control mean. A classic problem is to find the simultaneous confidence bounds for the difference between each treatment and the control. Compared with hypothesis testing, confidence bounds have the attractive advantage of telling more information about the effective treatment. Generally, the one-sided lower bounds are provided as it's enough for detecting effective treatment and the one-sided lower bounds has sharper lower bands than two-sided ones. However, a two-sided procedure provides both upper and lower bounds on the differences. In this article, we develop a new procedure which combines the good aspects of both the one-sided and the two-sided procedures. This new procedure has the same inferential sensitivity of the one-sided procedure proposed by Zhao (2007 Zhao , H. B. ( 2007 ). Comparing several treatments with a control . J. Statist. Plann. Infer. 137 : 29963006 .[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]) while also providing simultaneous two-sided bounds for the differences between treatments and the control. By our computation results, we find the new procedure is better than Hayter, Miwa and Liu's procedure (Hayter et al., 2000 Hayter , A. J. , Miwa , T. , Liu , W. ( 2000 ). Combining the advantages of one-sided and two-sided procedures for comparing several treatments with a control . J. Statist. Plann. Infer. 86 : 8199 .[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]), when the sample size is balanced. We also illustrate the new procedure by an example.  相似文献

Finding the influence of traffic accident on the road is helpful to analyze the characteristics of traffic flow, and take reasonable and effective control measures. Here, the detrended fluctuation analysis method is applied to investigate the complexity of time series in mixed traffic flow with a blockage induced by an accident. As a parameter to depict the long-term evolutionary behavior of the time series in traffic flow, the scaling exponent is analyzed. According to the scaling exponent, it is shown that the traffic flow time series can display long-range correlation characteristics, short-range correlation characteristics, and non-power-law relation in the long-range correlation characteristics, which is strongly dependent on the entering probability of vehicle, the ratio of slow vehicle and the blockage duration time.  相似文献

For constructing simultaneous confidence intervals for ratios of means for lognormal distributions, two approaches using a two-step method of variance estimates recovery are proposed. The first approach proposes fiducial generalized confidence intervals (FGCIs) in the first step followed by the method of variance estimates recovery (MOVER) in the second step (FGCIs–MOVER). The second approach uses MOVER in the first and second steps (MOVER–MOVER). Performance of proposed approaches is compared with simultaneous fiducial generalized confidence intervals (SFGCIs). Monte Carlo simulation is used to evaluate the performance of these approaches in terms of coverage probability, average interval width, and time consumption.  相似文献

In an earlier paper the authors (1997) extended the results of Hayter (1990) to the two parameter exponential probability model. This paper addressee the extention to the scale parameter case under location-scale probability model. Consider k (k≧3) treatments or competing firms such that an observation from with treatment or firm follows a distribution with cumulative distribution function (cdf) Fi(x)=F[(x-μi)/Qi], where F(·) is any absolutely continuous cdf, i=1,…,k. We propose a test to test the null hypothesis H01=…=θk against the simple ordered alternative H11≦…≦θk, with at least one strict inequality, using the data Xi,j, i=1,…k; j=1,…,n1. Two methods to compute the critical points of the proposed test have been demonstrated by talking k two parameter exponential distributions. The test procedure also allows us to construct simultaneous one sided confidence intervals (SOCIs) for the ordered pairwise ratios θji, 1≦i<j≦k. Statistical simulation revealed that: 9i) actual sizes of the critical points are almost conservative and (ii) power of the proposed test relative to some existing tests is higher.  相似文献
