Reflections on PSA

A personal reflection on the history of the Pacific Sociological Association in the USA and the Pacific Basin. Essay ends with suggestions for the PSA’s future.     

Reflections on Accuracy

The difference between test accuracy and predictive accuracy is presented and defined. The failure to distinguish between these two types of measures is shown to have led to a misguided debate over the interpretation of prevalence estimates. The distinction between test accuracy defined as sensitivity and specificity, and predictive accuracy defined as positive and negative predictive value is shown to reflect the choice of the denominator used to calculate true positive, false positive, false negative, and true negative rates. It is further shown that any instrument will tend to overestimate prevalence in low base rate populations and underestimate it in those populations where prevalence is high. The implications of these observations are then discussed in terms of the need to define diagnostic thresholds that have clinical and policy relevance.     

Reflections on dangerous fieldwork

Latin American fieldwork may involve danger for researcher and subject alike. The researcher must work to minimize his or her own or others’ exposure to violence. Unobtrusive methods such as Q-Methodology, participant observation, and quiet interviewing are recommended so that the researcher can build a sustaining and protecting network of contacts. This article discusses the interpersonal relations, problems of security, and field entry techniques involved in sensitive research situations. Ana Karina Galve de Peritore, his wife and frequent field collaborator, is a former professor of international relations at National Autonomous University of Mexico, and is currently a doctoral candidate in rural sociology at University of Missouri-Columbia.     

Reflections on Mathematical Sociology

As a participant in the development of mathematical sociology over the past several decades, the author undertakes a personal and historical review of the field. A special effort is made to link early innovations and interests to recent developments. The paper deals successively with (a) the origins of mathematical sociology and its early achievements, (b) the cognitive interests and values of mathematical sociologists in relation to ideas associated with the founders of sociology, (c) the scope of mathematical contributions in terms of the general components of human action and society, and (d) the problematic specialty status of mathematical sociology. The paper concludes with some thoughts on the future of mathematical sociology.     

Response to Juliet Mitchell's Reflections

Mitchell credits me with two important contributions, the first, that in theorizing the development of sex and gender I propose that it is “cognitive gender [that] controls/organizes libidinal sexuality” rather than “Freudian libido theory or some genealogical object relations theory.” This is correct insofar as cognition in this context is understood to mean a cognitive/affective constellation. Mitchell also credits Lionel Ovesey and me with suggesting that disidentification is another name for separation-individuation and with pointing out that both sexes need to separate and individuate from mother. Although the etiology of transsexualism is unknown, one significant factor in its genesis is separation anxiety, which gets bound in cross-gender fantasies. In transsexuals, safety takes priority over sexuality; this is the key finding that dictates a reevaluation of the absolute priority so often afforded sexuality in psychoanalytic theory. The way medical culture shaped the diagnosis of transsexualism and provided a surgical resolution is a premier example of what I call a shared cultural fantasy (Person, 1995). The medical endorsement of transsexualism as a biological disorder tilted the treatment toward a surgical resolution.     

Reflections: Ethnographic content analysis

An ethnographic approach to document analysis is offered based on principles of qualitative data collection and analysis. It is proposed that numeric as well as narrative data be collected when studying such documents as TV new and movies. Ethnographic content analysis is briefly contrasted with conventional modes of quantitative content analysis to illustrate the usefulness of constant comparison for discovering emergent patterns, emphases and themes in an analysis of TV news coverage of the Iranian hostage situation. It is suggested that an ethnographic perspective can help delineate patterns of human action when document analysis is conceptualized as fieldwork.This draft has benefitted from comments and suggestions by Robert Emerson, Shulamit Reinharz, and three anonymous reviewers. Reflections of an ordinary life

Philip Anderson (not his real name) was one of thirty people who talked to Wendy Booth and Tim Booth as part of their recently published study Growing Up with Parents who have Learning Difficulties (London: Routledge, 1998). Philip's stoy illustrates many of the themes common to the experience of this group: resilience in the face of risk; the importance of family, especially grandma; social exclusion; the effects of hardship; and the enduring nature of parent-child bonds.     

Reflections Toward an Enactive Psychoanalysis

The present work examines the meaning of embodied mind—a key notion in the thinking of biologist and epistemologist Francisco Varela—as an answer for the paradoxes and blind spots originated by the representationist approaches that underlie theories of the mind of most psychological and philosophical schools, including Freudian psychoanalysis. The understanding of this notion implies a radical review of our beliefs regarding the substantial reality of the self, the world, and the relationship between them. For this reason Varela suggests that only a nondiscursive nonanalytic praxis can allow the subject to carry on the observation, inquiry, and acceptance of the experience of himself or herself, the other, and the world as empty and groundless.. Two preliminary reflections are discussed in the paper: (a) the possibility of developing an enactive psychoanalysis, that is, a psychoanalysis that understands the experience of the constitutive frailty of the self as a potentially liberating one rather than as a flaw in the structuring of personality and its defense mechanisms, and (b) how to introduce the method of Mindfulness in the psychotherapeutic setting without interfering with the psychoanalytic listening or the patient and analyst’s relational work.
