This paper recognizes that training programs for foster parents are as good as their implementation for which the author emphasizes the need for clinical expertise. It is important to help foster parents emphasize and understand issues of grief over loss and separation and the child's expressions through behavior. In recent years there has been an increase in the number of individuals seeking help from mental health professionals with issues related to separation and divorce. In order to understand the psychological impact of divorce on individuals the theory of mourning developed by John Bowlby has been used by many clinicians to inform their practice. Using data collected from 123 separated or divorced adults an instrument designed to measure Bowlby's three phases of mourning is developed. Implications for clinical practice and research are discussed.  相似文献

A popular explanation of the behavior of the Munchausen By Proxy Syndrome (MBPS) mother, who induces or fabricates illness in her child, is that such a mother uses her child as a fetish in a compulsive relationship with the pediatrician. This explanation seems to suggest that genital issues related to penis envy motivate MBPS behavior. An alternative is proposed that places the MBPS mother's ego development at a pre-oedipal level, where infantile aggression, splitting of the ego, and the need for a transitional object to manage separation from the mother dominate the clinical picture.  相似文献

This article explores the biographical shaping of management theory. Using the British management theorist Lyndall Urwick (1891–1983) as a case study, it argues that existing understandings of the history of management studies are limited by their lack of attention to the emotional a priori of theory production. For men such as Frederick Taylor or Urwick, the work of composing management theory for a public audience was intimately connected to events and experiences in the private life. Theorizing addressed emotional dilemmas even while it strove to construct a separation between the personal and the organizational. Management theories are not only historically, socially or discursively constructed, but can be read in terms of the evidence they provide about individual subjectivity. Psychoanalytic concepts can help illuminate such relations. Theorizing can be seen as a form of play: as something which, in D.W. Winnicott's terms, takes place in the space between the psychic reality of the ‘me’ and the external world of the ‘not me’. The ‘classical’ administrative theory represented by Taylor, Fayol and Urwick sought to create organizational structures which could stand apart from, and allow the management of, individual personalities. It simultaneously insisted on the status of theory as the ‘not me’; that is, as a product which was not shaped by personal experience, but which constituted objective knowledge. The illusion of theory as a largely external, social product persists in much management and organization studies today. This article challenges that social determinism, first, by showing how Urwick's theories addressed issues of separation and intimacy, and second, by placing Urwick's work in the context of his relations with women.  相似文献

The role of the radiographer in child protection has received little attention. This review considers issues which arise in this field, highlighting the implications for those responsible for the management of child protection systems, for those responsible for training, and for staff in other specialisms and professions within the hospital. The different types of imaging technique are discussed with some comment on their advantages and disadvantages. Forced immobilisation is sometimes required, and consideration is given to the issues which arise for the radiographer and abused child in this process. The article reviews the knowledge needed by radiographers of the clinical and radiological manifestations of abuse. This study explored how the U.S. Departments of Housing and Urban Development-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program applies Housing First principles in the context of ten single-site programs. Focus group discussions with 64 HUD-VASH staff and community partners explored how the programs were influenced by Housing First principles and specific strategies to implement these principles in a single-site setting. Focus group respondents described resourceful ways that the principles of Housing First were implemented in their programs specifically related to (1) housing choice and structure, (2) separation of housing and services, (3) service philosophy, and (4) service array. Several of the Housing First domains cite the importance of integrated housing and the provision of services off-site; it was of particular interest to learn how single-site programs address these issues logistically. Lessons learned from this study include the importance of leveraging the independent yet overlapping tasks of case management and property management to ensure functional – if not geographic – separation of housing and services; maintaining staff on-site to address Veterans’ needs; working with community service organizations to complement the array of service available to residents; and housing single-site programs in mixed-use buildings.  相似文献

In June 2003, a large‐scale survey was conducted among South Carolina nonprofit agencies to gather information on a range of board governance issues. Some of the survey questions dealt with how each agency's board contributes to the organization. More than 80 percent of the responding agencies were registered as 501(c)(3), with the largest number of respondents in the human services category. Statistical analysis reveals where actual roles differ from “best practices” as prescribed in the literature. Discussion then focuses on how these trends in governance affect management and operations. In particular, we look at best practice regarding the separation of board and staff duties.  相似文献

The evaluation and assessment of sexual offenders is different than any other type of evaluation, and most clinicians are not properly trained to interview this population. This article addresses the clinical and ethical issues particular to the interview, assessment, and evaluation of these types of offenders. It offers both practical information regarding the interview itself, along with an overview of classification systems, paraphilias, and assessment techniques used with this population. In addition, issues related to risk assessment and risk management are also addressed, and an introduction to the use of actuarial risk assessment instruments is provided.  相似文献

This article presents an integrated four-step symmetrical model for the effective management of crises. Although the model is also applicable to the management of accidental and operational crises, it is formulated primarily for those crises whose occurrence is more likely a consequence of the inherent fallibility of management—that is, mismanagement. It is based on Grunig's situational theory and on the emerging theoretical framework of issues management—that is, on an early identification, redirection, or influence of issues. A biological analogy is used to suggest an early crisis intervention that averts further development of a potentially troublesome issue. The model incorporates both proactivity and symmetry and has three overarching principles: issues management, planning-prevention, and implementation. Two widely known corporate crises—Intel's Pentium flaw and McDonald's hot coffee spill—are used to illustrate the model.  相似文献

A major Australian report recently criticized the relationship between the gendered culture of management education and business management practices, in an effort to reduce impediments to equal representation of women in management. It recommended a major overhaul of university management education, whereby institutions would review their own role in shaping corporate management cultures and practices, and raise awareness of gender issues in the classroom. This article reports on a subsequent survey that explored postgraduate business students' perceptions of gender issues in the management curriculum, and their effects on learning experiences. It suggests that a masculine ethos is perceptible in management education, which can disadvantage female and male students in different ways. The study suggests that greater awareness of gender issues should be a major consideration for management educators, to enable future managers to recognize and harness gender diversity in the workplace.  相似文献

The incidence of marital and relationship breakdown, in particular where children are involved, continues to increase across Australia. For the contact father, the psychological and emotional effects of separation are often experienced concurrently with many practical matters and can raise issues such as dealing with loss, identity development and constructive role restructuring. The adjustment period can also expose an increasing need to move on in developmental terms. This paper describes the effects of relationship or marital breakdown and ongoing adjustment issues upon those contact fathers who have not initiated separation, who have physically left the family home and in doing so, have left their children behind with the mother. The paper also considers the psychological and therapeutic implications for working with this often marginalised group of clients. Adolescent depression has become epidemic in the United States, with statistics showing that one in five adolescents may suffer from depression (Brent and Birmaher in N Engl J Med 347(9), 2002). This article examines adolescent depression from a psychodynamic perspective, and identifies the psychodynamics of adolescent depression as the affective correlates that stem from unresolved developmental conflicts, issues of separation/individuation, the search for identity and the development of the true self. This article presents wilderness therapy as a holistic intervention which can be used to address the intrapsychic, developmental and relational factors that give rise to adolescent depression. Wilderness therapy is a modality of mental health treatment that takes place outdoors and utilizes challenge and adventure, group work and other structured clinical interventions. A clinical case study presents wilderness therapy as an effective intervention for adolescent depression that can promote positive self-image and enhanced coping skills, and discusses limitations and implications for social work practice.  相似文献

The understanding of the process of termination is contingent upon a clarification of two sets of issues: those related to the metapsychology of separation and loss, and those related to the goals set by the patient and the therapist in the treatment relationship. This article attempts to reformulate the issue of separation and loss from the point of view of the psychology of the self, and to discuss a framework through which goals may be set for treatment. This paper persents some common social work clinical and case management issues with respect to psychiatric drug treatment. The roles of the psychiatrist and the social worker are distinguished. Three types of negative treatment drug effect are described-physical, psychological, and social-with case examples. Techniques to prevent or reduce negative drug effects are presented. The recurring challenges in developing and coordinating social frameworks for the effective adaptive management of environmental resources in urban environments may be addressed by developing platforms, similar to those promoted by collective action in the management of common pool resources. This paper compares how these two frameworks perceive and foster social organization vis-à-vis management action, particularly at the local scale of resource use. The significant potential for incorporation of platforms into the adaptive management framework is discussed, based on a set of issues identified in collective action research as important in the development of platforms. An urban-centred case study, the Las Vegas Wash Comprehensive Adaptive Management Plan, illustrates how an adaptive management framework, when its social components come together in a mutually supportive, heuristic way, begins to generate what in collective action is called a platform. The paper further explores how platforms may be more explicitly incorporated into the adaptive management framework to address some of the more persistent social organization difficulties for which adaptive management has been faulted, especially regarding scale issues and the urban context. A revised adaptive management model including a platform is provided, and suggestions made about issues that may be studied using this model.  相似文献

The promotion of home management of asthma has increased the popularity of education programs amongst health professionals. Our clinical experience has led us to believe presently available asthma education programs are inadequately used by parents of children with asthma. This article describes an outpatient treatment program for adolescent sexual abusers that was established by a mental health agency in collaboration with a specialized probation program in the juvenile court. Individualized treatment is based on a comprehensive clinical assessment with the youth and guardian, for which examples are provided. Given the heterogeneity of this population, we describe several treatment strategies directed to various individual or family clinical targets, including psychiatric disorders, sexual deviance and sexuality, normal adolescent development and adaptive skills, and parent and family relationships. Ongoing collaborative and coordination issues are also reviewed. The integration of mental health and probationary services provides a balanced approach to the community management and treatment of the low-risk, primarily first-time, adolescent sexual offender.  相似文献

Abstract

Outcome evaluation of group work intervention in residential agencies. Development of a management/clinical information system and related computer applications.

Program evaluation as discussed in this article describes a service delivery-focused approach to program evaluation which is actually designed and implemented in a residential treatment agency for delinquent youth, the evaluation approach represents a practical strategy which applies much of the current thinking and research in the area of user focused evaluation. The approach has been refined by incorporating the product of the authors' experiential learning and pragmatic adaptations which evolved out of field testing the model over several years.

The authors present the overall approach to evaluation and the development of the evaluation model within an agency context. The author's then describe the development of a computer-based system which is designed to serve as both a management information system and a clinical information system. Basic aspects of the computer-based evaluation system are presented. Throughout the article, the authors discuss process-related issues pertaining to the introduction of evaluation to both management and staff and movement toward the implementation of an automated evaluation system.  相似文献
