In this paper, an alternative estimator of population mean in the presence of non-response has been suggested which comes in the form of Walsh's estimator. The estimator of mean obtained from the proposed technique remains better than the estimators obtained from ratio or mean methods of imputation. The mean-squared error (MSE) of the resultant estimator is less than that of the estimator obtained on the basis of ratio method of imputation for the optimum choice of parameters. An estimator for estimating a parameter involved in the process of new method of imputation has been discussed. A suggestion to form ‘warm deck’ method of imputation has been suggested. The MSE expressions for the proposed estimators have been derived analytically and compared empirically. The work has been extended to the case of multi-auxiliary information to be used for imputation. Numerical illustrations are also provided.  相似文献

In sample survey, post-stratification is often used when the identification of stratum cannot be achieved in advance of the survey. If the sample size is large, post-stratification is usually as effective as the ordinary stratification with proportional allocation. However, in the case of small samples, no general acceptable theory or technique has been well developed. One of the main difficulties is the possibility of obtaining zero sample sizes in some strata for small samples. In this paper, we overcome this difficulty by employing a sampling scheme referred to as the multiple inverse sampling such that each stratum is ensured to be sampled a specified number of observations. A Monte Carlo simulation is carried out to compare the estimator obtained from the multiple inverse sampling with some other existing estimators. The estimator under multiple inverse sampling is superior in the sense that it is unbiased and its variance does not depend on the values of stratum means in the population.  相似文献

In this paper, a new power transformation estimator of population mean in the presence of non-response has been suggested. The estimator of mean obtained from proposed technique remains better than the estimators obtained from ratio or mean methods of imputation. The mean squared error of the resultant estimator is less than that of the estimator obtained on the basis of ratio method of imputation for the optinum choice of parameters. An estimator for estimating a parameter involved in the process of new method of imputation has been discussed. The MSE expressions for the proposed estimators have been derived analytically and compared empirically. Product method of imputation for negatively correlated variables has also been introduced. The work has been extended to the case of multi-auxiliary information to be used for imputation.  相似文献

Summary In this paper we have suggested two modified estimators of population mean using power transformation. It has been shown that the modified estimators are more efficient than the sample mean estimator, usual ratio estimator, Sisodia and Dwivedi’s (1981) estimator and Upadhyaya and Singh’s (1999) estimator at their optimum conditions. Empirical illustrations are also given for examining the merits of the proposed estimators. Following Kadilar and Cingi (2003) the work has been extended to stratified random sampling, and the same data set has been studied to examine the performance in stratified random sampling.  相似文献

We present some unbiased estimators at the population mean in a finite population sample surveys with simple random sampling design where information on an auxiliary variance x positively correlated with the main variate y is available. Exact variance and unbiased estimate of the variance are computed for any sample size. These estimators are compared for their precision with the mean per unit and the ratio estimators. Modifications of the estimators are suggested to make them more precise than the mean per unit estimator or the ratio estimator regardless of the value of the population correlation coefficient between the variates x and y. Asymptotic distribution of our estimators and confidnece intervals for the population mean are also obtained.  相似文献

A genuine small sample theory for post-stratification is developed in this paper. This includes the definition of a ratio estimator of the population mean ?, the derivation of its bias and its exact variance and a discussion of variance estimation. The estimator has both a within strata component of variance which is comparable with that obtained in proportional allocation stratified sampling and a between strata component of variance which will tend to zero as the overall sample size becomes large. Certain optimality properties of the estimator are obtained. The generalization of post-stratification from the simple random sampling to post-stratification used in conjunction with stratification and multi-stage designs is discussed.  相似文献

An attempt has been mads to suggest some estimators for population mean in double sampling with two auxiliary variables., alternative to the usual regression estimator. When the experimenter has partial Information about the mean of the auxiliary variable or variables, preliminary test estimators can be used. The bias, mean square error, relative efficiency and optimum allocation of sample sizes are obtained for the suggested estimators.  相似文献

It is well known that two-phase (or double) sampling is of significant use in practice when the population parameter(s) (say, population mean X¯) of the auxiliary variate x is not known. Keeping this in view, we have suggested a class of ratio-product estimators in two-phase sampling with its properties. The asymptotically optimum estimators (AOEs) in the class are identified in two different cases with their variances. Conditions for the proposed estimator to be more efficient than the two-phase sampling ratio, product and mean per unit estimator are investigated. Comparison with single phase sampling is also discussed. An empirical study is carried out to demonstrate the efficiency of the suggested estimator over conventional estimators.  相似文献

This article suggests the class of estimators of population mean of study variable using various parameters related to an auxiliary variable with its properties in simple random sampling. It has been identified that the some existing estimator/classes of estimators are members of suggested class. It has been found theoretically as well as empirically that the suggested class is better than the existing methods.  相似文献

This paper considers the problem of estimating the population mean using information on an auxiliary variable in presence of non-response. Some modified ratio, product and regression estimators in double sampling have been suggested and their properties are studied. It is shown that to the first degree of approximation, estimators based on estimated optimum values have the same variance as that of the optimum estimators. An empirical study is carried to judge the merits of the suggested estimators over conventional unbiased estimator and other known estimators. Both theoretical and empirical study results present the soundness and usefulness of the suggested estimators in practice.  相似文献

This article proposes an alternative to usual ratio estimator of population mean in post-stratified sampling procedure and its properties are analyzed. Both theoretical and empirical findings are encouraging and support the soundness of the proposed procedure for mean estimation over an alternative to ratio estimator in simple random sampling without replacement suggested by Srivenkataramana and Tracy (1980), usual combined ratio estimators suggested by Ige and Tripathi (1989), and usual unbiased estimator in post-stratified sampling scheme. Both theoretical and empirical findings are encouraging and support the soundness of the present study. At the end, a simulation study has been carried out to verify the superiority of the proposed estimator.  相似文献

A class of estimators for the variance of sample mean is defined and its properties are studied in case of normal population. It is identified that the usual unbiased estimator, Singh, Pandey and Hirano (1973) -type estimator and Lee (1931) estimator are particular members of the proposed class of estimators. It is found that the minimum Mean Squared Error (MSE) of the proposed class of estimators is less than that of other estimators.  相似文献

This paper discusses two estimators of the mean of a finite population based on a simple random sample from it, when supplementary information on a variable positively correlated with the variable of interest is available. Simultaneous reductions in absolute bias and mean square error of the estimator are seen as compared with those of the traditional estimator in the ratio method of estimation. The suggested estimators are simple for computation and there is no appreciable increase in the cost as well.  相似文献

Abstract

In the present article, an effort has been made to develop calibration estimators of the population mean under two-stage stratified random sampling design when auxiliary information is available at primary stage unit (psu) level. The properties of the developed estimators are derived in-terms of design based approximate variance and approximate consistent design based estimator of the variance. Some simulation studies have been conducted to investigate the relative performance of calibration estimator over the usual estimator of the population mean without using auxiliary information in two-stage stratified random sampling. Proposed calibration estimators have outperformed the usual estimator without using auxiliary information.  相似文献

Estimation of the population mean under the regression model with random components is considered. Conditions under which the random components regression estimator is design consistent are given. It is shown that consistency holds when incorrect values are used for the variance components. The regression estimator constructed with model parameters that differ considerably from the true parameters performed well in a Monte Carlo study. Variance estimators for the regression predictor are suggested. A variance estimator appropriate for estimators constructed with a biased estimator for the between-group variance component performed well in the Monte Carlo study.  相似文献

This article deals with the problem of estimation of the finite population mean using auxiliary information in the presence of random non response. Three different situations where random non response occurs either in study variate, or in auxiliary variate, or in both the variates, have been discussed. The asymptotically optimum estimators (AOEs) for each strategy are also identified. Expressions of biases and mean squared errors of the proposed estimators have been derived up to the first degree of approximation. Proposed estimators have been compared with the usual unbiased estimator, ratio estimator, and product estimator in the presence of random non response. Empirical studies are also carried out to show the performance of the proposed estimators over other estimators.  相似文献

A new approach to form multivariate difference estimator is suggested which does not require the knowledge of unknown population parameters as such. It gives minimum variance among the class of multivariate difference estimators. The performance of this estimator with respect to Des Raj's (J. Amer. Statist. Assoc. 60 (1965), 270–277) multivariate difference estimator is illustrated. Using the information on two auxiliary variates, the robustness of Des Raj's estimator yd is studied empirically. Two new estimators to estimate population mean/total are developed on the same lines as that of yd. The performance of these estimators is studied for a wide variety of populations.  相似文献

In this article, we have developed asymptotic theory for the simultaneous estimation of the k means of arbitrary populations under the common mean hypothesis and further assuming that corresponding population variances are unknown and unequal. The unrestricted estimator, the Graybill-Deal-type restricted estimator, the preliminary test, and the Stein-type shrinkage estimators are suggested. A large sample test statistic is also proposed as a pretest for testing the common mean hypothesis. Under the sequence of local alternatives and squared error loss, we have compared the asymptotic properties of the estimators by means of asymptotic distributional quadratic bias and risk. Comprehensive Monte-Carlo simulation experiments were conducted to study the relative risk performance of the estimators with reference to the unrestricted estimator in finite samples. Two real-data examples are also furnished to illustrate the application of the suggested estimation strategies.  相似文献

The present investigation addresses the problem of estimating a finite population mean in two-phase cluster sampling in presence of random non response situations. Utilizing information on an auxiliary variable, regression type estimators has been proposed. Effective imputation techniques have been suggested to deal with the random non response situations. The properties of the proposed estimation strategies have been studied for different cases of random non response situations in practical surveys. The superiority of the suggested methodology over the natural sample mean estimator of population mean has been established through empirical studies carried over the data sets of natural population and artificially generated population.  相似文献

Recently, Shabbir and Gupta [Shabbir, J. and Gupta, S. (2011). On estimating finite population mean in simple and stratified random sampling. Communications in Statistics-Theory and Methods, 40(2), 199–212] defined a class of ratio type exponential estimators of population mean under a very specific linear transformation of auxiliary variable. In the present article, we propose a generalized class of ratio type exponential estimators of population mean in simple random sampling under a very general linear transformation of auxiliary variable. Shabbir and Gupta's [Shabbir, J. and Gupta, S. (2011). On estimating finite population mean in simple and stratified random sampling. Communications in Statistics-Theory and Methods, 40(2), 199–212] class of estimators is a particular member of our proposed class of estimators. It has been found that the optimal estimator of our proposed generalized class of estimators is always more efficient than almost all the existing estimators defined under the same situations. Moreover, in comparison to a few existing estimators, our proposed estimator becomes more efficient under some simple conditions. Theoretical results obtained in the article have been verified by taking a numerical illustration. Finally, a simulation study has been carried out to see the relative performance of our proposed estimator with respect to some existing estimators which are less efficient under certain conditions as compared to the proposed estimator.  相似文献
