The authors consider a finite population ρ = {(Yk, xk), k = 1,…,N} conforming to a linear superpopulation model with unknown heteroscedastic errors, the variances of which are values of a smooth enough function of the auxiliary variable X for their nonparametric estimation. They describe a method of the Chambers‐Dunstan type for estimation of the distribution of {Yk, k = 1,…, N} from a sample drawn from without replacement, and determine the asymptotic distribution of its estimation error. They also consider estimation of its mean squared error in particular cases, evaluating both the analytical estimator derived by “plugging‐in” the asymptotic variance, and a bootstrap approach that is also applicable to estimation of parameters other than mean squared error. These proposed methods are compared with some common competitors in simulation studies.  相似文献

Investigators and epidemiologists often use statistics based on the parameters of a multinomial distribution. Two main approaches have been developed to assess the inferences of these statistics. The first one uses asymptotic formulae which are valid for large sample sizes. The second one computes the exact distribution, which performs quite well for small samples. They present some limitations for sample sizes N neither large enough to satisfy the assumption of asymptotic normality nor small enough to allow us to generate the exact distribution. We analytically computed the 1/N corrections of the asymptotic distribution for any statistics based on a multinomial law. We applied these results to the kappa statistic in 2×2 and 3×3 tables. We also compared the coverage probability obtained with the asymptotic and the corrected distributions under various hypothetical configurations of sample size and theoretical proportions. With this method, the estimate of the mean and the variance were highly improved as well as the 2.5 and the 97.5 percentiles of the distribution, allowing us to go down to sample sizes around 20, for data sets not too asymmetrical. The order of the difference between the exact and the corrected values was 1/N2 for the mean and 1/N3 for the variance.  相似文献

To summarize a set of data by a distribution function in Johnson's translation system, we use a least-squares approach to parameter estimation wherein we seek to minimize the distance between the vector of "uniformized" oeder statistics and the corresponding vector of expected values. We use the software package FITTRI to apply this technique to three problems arising respectively in medicine, applied statistics, and civil engineering. Compared to traditional methods of distribution fitting based on moment matching, percentile matchingL 1 estimation, and L ? estimation, the least-squares technique is seen to yield fits of similar accuracy and to converge more rapidly and reliably to a set of acceptable parametre estimates.  相似文献

In this paper, we obtain some results for the asymptotic behavior of the tail probability of a random sum Sτ = ∑τk = 1Xk, where the summands Xk, k = 1, 2, …, are conditionally dependent random variables with a common subexponential distribution F, and the random number τ is a non negative integer-valued random variable, independent of {Xk: k ? 1}.  相似文献

We introduce a new class of positive infinitely divisible probability laws calling them 𝔏γ distributions. Their cumulant-generating functions (cgf) are expressed in terms of the principal branch of the Lambert W function. The probability density functions (pdfs) of 𝔏γ laws are bounded resembling pdf of a Lévy stable distribution. The exponential dispersion model constructed starting from an 𝔏γ distribution admits the inverse Gaussian approximation. The natural exponential family constructed starting from an 𝔏γ distribution constitutes the reciprocal of the natural exponential family generated by a spectrally negative stable law with α = 1. We derive new results on 𝔏γ laws and the related exponential dispersion models, including their convolution and scaling closure properties. We generate another exponential dispersion model starting from an exponentially compounded 𝔏γ law. This distribution emerges in the Poisson mixture representation of a generalized Poisson law. We extend the Poisson approximation for the scaled Neyman type A exponential dispersion model. We derive saddlepoint-type approximations for some of these exponential dispersion models. The role of the Lambert W function is emphasized.  相似文献

In this paper we give an asymptotic formula of order n ?1/2, where n is the sample size, for the skewness of the distribution of the maximum likelihood estimates of the linear parameters in generalized linear models. The formula is given in matrix notation and is very suitable for computer implementation. Several special cases are discussed. We also give asymptotic formulae for the skewness of the distribution of the maximum likelihood estimates of the dispersion and precision parameters.  相似文献

In many industrial and natural phenomena, we need the probability that a component is smaller than the other component. Under a stress–strength model, this is reliability of an item. Under independent setup, there are different approaches for the estimation of such reliability. Here, estimation is considered under the dependent case. Under bi-variate setup uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimator is obtained. Also comparison with available estimator based on Maximum Likelihood Estimate (MLE) is done through Mean Square Error (MSE) and bias. Also these are compared by computing L1 distance between their distribution functions. From this idea and numerical computations, UMVUE appears to be good.  相似文献

We examine the behaviour of the sample autocorrelations of a seasonal time series for which the first difference of order s (s ≥ 1) is stationary. The asymptotic distribution of the autocorrelations r'(k) based on uncentered data and of the autocorrelations r(k) based on centered data are derived. In each case, the asymptotic distribution is characterized as a function of the lag k and the parameters of the process. A simulation study was conducted in order to investigate the rate of convergence of the finite sample distributions of r(k) and r'(k) to their asymptotic counterparts and to evaluate the effect of centering or not centering the data on the distribution of autocorrelations.  相似文献

Let T2 i=z′iS?1zi, i==,…k be correlated Hotelling's T2 statistics under normality. where z=(z′i,…,z′k)′ and nS are independently distributed as Nkp((O,ρ?∑) and Wishart distribution Wp(∑, n), respectively. The purpose of this paper is to study the distribution function F(x1,…,xk) of (T2 i,…,T2 k) when n is large. First we derive an asymptotic expansion of the characteristic function of (T2 i,…,T2 k) up to the order n?2. Next we give asymptotic expansions for (T2 i,…,T2 k) in two cases (i)ρ=Ik and (ii) k=2 by inverting the expanded characteristic function up to the orders n?2 and n?1, respectively. Our results can be applied to the distribution function of max (T2 i,…,T2 k) as a special case.  相似文献

In bayesian inference, the Bayes estimator is the alternative with the minimum expected loss. In most cases, the loss function shows the distance between the alternative and the parameter. Therefore, any distance can lead to a loss function. Among the best known distance functions is L p one, where the choice of value p may be difficult and arbitrary. This paper examines robust models where the loss function is modelled by family L p . Our solution concept is the non-dominated alternative. We characterize the non-dominated set by having the posterior distribution function satisfy a particular asymmetry property. We also include an example to illustrate the methodology described.  相似文献

The L1 and L2-errors of the histogram estimate of a density f from a sample X1,X2,…,Xn using a cubic partition are shown to be asymptotically normal without any unnecessary conditions imposed on the density f. The asymptotic variances are shown to depend on f only through the corresponding norm of f. From this follows the asymptotic null distribution of a goodness-of-fit test based on the total variation distance, introduced by Györfi and van der Meulen (1991). This note uses the idea of partial inversion for obtaining characteristic functions of conditional distributions, which goes back at least to Bartlett (1938).  相似文献

In consumer preference studies, it is common to seek a complete ranking of a variety of, say N, alternatives or treatments. Unfortunately, as N increases, it becomes progressively more confusing and undesirable for respondents to rank all N alternatives simultaneously. Moreover, the investigators may only be interested in consumers’ top few choices. Therefore, it is desirable to accommodate the setting where each survey respondent ranks only her/his most preferred k (k?N) alternatives. In this paper, we propose a simple procedure to test the independence of N alternatives and the top-k ranks, such that the value of k can be predetermined before securing a set of partially ranked data or be at the discretion of the investigator in the presence of complete ranking data. The asymptotic distribution of the proposed test under root-n local alternatives is established. We demonstrate our procedure with two real data sets.  相似文献

The Hinde–Demétrio (HD) family of distributions, which are discrete exponential dispersion models with an additional real index parameter p, have been recently characterized from the unit variance function μ + μ p . For p equals to 2, 3,…, the corresponding distributions are concentrated on non negative integers, overdispersed and zero-inflated with respect to a Poisson distribution having the same mean. The negative binomial (p = 2) and strict arcsine (p = 3) distributions are HD families; the limit case (p → ∞) is associated to a suitable Poisson distribution. Apart from these count distributions, none of the HD distributions has explicit probability mass functions p k . This article shows that the ratios r k  = k p k /p k?1, k = 1,…, p ? 1, are equal and different from r p . This new property allows, for a given count data set, to determine the integer p by some tests. The extreme situation of p = 2 is of general interest for count data. Some examples are used for illustrations and discussions.  相似文献

Let X 1,X 2,…,X N be successive independent random P-vectors drawn from some continuous diagonally symmetric distribution. The problem of detecting a shift in level of the sequence at an unknown time point M, ≦MN-1, is studied. Test statistics based on multivariate analogues of the rank statistics derived by BHATTACHARYYA and JOHNSON (1888) are proposed, and their asymptotic properties are investigated.  相似文献

It is an elementary fact that the size of an orthogonal array of strength t on k factors must be a multiple of a certain number, say Lt, that depends on the orders of the factors. Thus Lt is a lower bound on the size of arrays of strength t on those factors, and is no larger than Lk, the size of the complete factorial design. We investigate the relationship between the numbers Lt, and two questions in particular: For what t is Lt < Lk? And when Lt = Lk, is the complete factorial design the only array of that size and strength t? Arrays are assumed to be mixed-level.

We refer to an array of size less than Lk as a proper fraction. Guided by our main result, we construct a variety of mixed-level proper fractions of strength k ? 1 that also satisfy a certain group-theoretic condition.  相似文献

Data-based choice of the bandwidth is an important problem in kernel density estimation. The pseudo-likelihood and the least-squares cross-validation bandwidth selectors are well known, but widely criticized in the literature. For heavy-tailed distributions, the L1 distance between the pseudo-likelihood-based estimator and the density does not seem to converge in probability to zero with increasing sample size. Even for normal-tailed densities, the rate of L1 convergence is disappointingly slow. In this article, we report an interesting finding that with minor modifications both the cross-validation methods can be implemented effectively, even for heavy-tailed densities. For both these estimators, the L1 distance (from the density) are shown to converge completely to zero irrespective of the tail of the density. The expected L1 distance also goes to zero. These results hold even in the presence of a strongly mixing-type dependence. Monte Carlo simulations and analysis of the Old Faithful geyser data suggest that if implemented appropriately, contrary to the traditional belief, the cross-validation estimators compare well with the sophisticated plug-in and bootstrap-based estimators.  相似文献

A truncated sample consists of realizations of two variables L and T subject to the constraint L < T. One simple solution to dependently truncated data is to take L as a covariate of T in the Cox model. We aimed at studying the probability of selection, P(L < T), in this framework. We proposed the point estimator and derived its asymptotic distribution. Both truncated-only data and censored and truncated data were generated in the simulation study. The proposed point and variance estimators showed good performance in various simulated settings. The bone marrow transplant registry data were analyzed as the illustrative example.  相似文献

Let π1, …, πk be k (? 2) independent populations, where πi denotes the uniform distribution over the interval (0, θi) and θi > 0 (i = 1, …, k) is an unknown scale parameter. The population associated with the largest scale parameter is called the best population. For selecting the best population, We use a selection rule based on the natural estimators of θi, i = 1, …, k, for the case of unequal sample sizes. Consider the problem of estimating the scale parameter θL of the selected uniform population when sample sizes are unequal and the loss is measured by the squared log error (SLE) loss function. We derive the uniformly minimum risk unbiased (UMRU) estimator of θL under the SLE loss function and two natural estimators of θL are also studied. For k = 2, we derive a sufficient condition for inadmissibility of an estimator of θL. Using these condition, we conclude that the UMRU estimator and natural estimator are inadmissible. Finally, the risk functions of various competing estimators of θL are compared through simulation.  相似文献

Let {xij(1 ? j ? ni)|i = 1, 2, …, k} be k independent samples of size nj from respective distributions of functions Fj(x)(1 ? j ? k). A classical statistical problem is to test whether these k samples came from a common distribution function, F(x) whose form may or may not be known. In this paper, we consider the complementary problem of estimating the distribution functions suspected to be homogeneous in order to improve the basic estimator known as “empirical distribution function” (edf), in an asymptotic setup. Accordingly, we consider four additional estimators, namely, the restricted estimator (RE), the preliminary test estimator (PTE), the shrinkage estimator (SE), and the positive rule shrinkage estimator (PRSE) and study their characteristic properties based on the mean squared error (MSE) and relative risk efficiency (RRE) with tables and graphs. We observed that for k ? 4, the positive rule SE performs uniformly better than both shrinkage and the unrestricted estimator, while PTEs works reasonably well for k < 4.  相似文献

When the data contain outliers or come from population with heavy-tailed distributions, which appear very often in spatiotemporal data, the estimation methods based on least-squares (L2) method will not perform well. More robust estimation methods are required. In this article, we propose the local linear estimation for spatiotemporal models based on least absolute deviation (L1) and drive the asymptotic distributions of the L1-estimators under some mild conditions imposed on the spatiotemporal process. The simulation results for two examples, with outliers and heavy-tailed distribution, respectively, show that the L1-estimators perform better than the L2-estimators.  相似文献
