We extend the empirical likelihood beyond its domain by expanding its contours nested inside the domain with a similarity transformation. The extended empirical likelihood achieves two objectives at the same time: escaping the “convex hull constraint” on the empirical likelihood and improving the coverage accuracy of the empirical likelihood ratio confidence region to $O(n^{-2})$ . The latter is accomplished through a special transformation which matches the extended empirical likelihood with the Bartlett corrected empirical likelihood. The extended empirical likelihood ratio confidence region retains the shape of the original empirical likelihood ratio confidence region. It also accommodates adjustments for dimension and small sample size, giving it good coverage accuracy in large and small sample situations. The popular empirical likelihood method not only has a convenient chi-square limiting distribution but is also Bartlett correctable, leading to a high-order coverage precision of the resulting confidence regions. Meanwhile, it is one of many nonparametric likelihoods in the Cressie–Read power divergence family. The other likelihoods share many attractive properties but are not Bartlett correctable. In this paper, we develop a new technique to achieve the effect of being Bartlett correctable. Our technique is generally applicable to pivotal quantities with chi-square limiting distributions. Numerical experiments and an example reveal that the method is successful for several important nonparametric likelihoods.  相似文献

The authors show how an adjusted pseudo‐empirical likelihood ratio statistic that is asymptotically distributed as a chi‐square random variable can be used to construct confidence intervals for a finite population mean or a finite population distribution function from complex survey samples. They consider both non‐stratified and stratified sampling designs, with or without auxiliary information. They examine the behaviour of estimates of the mean and the distribution function at specific points using simulations calling on the Rao‐Sampford method of unequal probability sampling without replacement. They conclude that the pseudo‐empirical likelihood ratio confidence intervals are superior to those based on the normal approximation, whether in terms of coverage probability, tail error rates or average length of the intervals.  相似文献

This paper studies the problem of convex hull constraint in conventional empirical likelihood. Specifically, in the framework of regression, a balanced augmented empirical likelihood (BAEL) procedure through adding two synthetic data points is proposed. It can be used to resolve the under-coverage issue, especially in small-sample or high-dimension setting. Furthermore, some asymptotic properties for proposed BAEL ratio statistic are established under mild conditions. The proposed approach performs robust to different random errors by choosing a robust loss function. Extensive simulation studies and a real example are carried out to support our results.  相似文献

Abstract.  For a class of vector-valued non-Gaussian stationary processes, we develop the Cressie–Read power-divergence (CR) statistic approach which has been proposed for the i.i.d. case. The CR statistic includes empirical likelihood as a special case. Therefore, by adopting this CR statistic approach, the theory of estimation and testing based on empirical likelihood is greatly extended. We use an extended Whittle likelihood as score function and derive the asymptotic distribution of the CR statistic. We apply this result to estimation of autocorrelation and the AR coefficient, and get narrower confidence intervals than those obtained by existing methods. We also consider the power properties of the test based on asymptotic theory. Under a sequence of contiguous local alternatives, we derive the asymptotic distribution of the CR statistic. The problem of testing autocorrelation is discussed and we introduce some interesting properties of the local power.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the construction of confidence intervals for a probability density function under a negatively associated sample by using the blockwise technique. It is shown that the blockwise empirical likelihood (EL) ratio statistic is asymptotically χ2‐type distributed. The result is used to obtain EL based confidence interval on the probability density function.  相似文献

The Gini index and its generalizations have been used extensively for measuring inequality and poverty in the social sciences. Recently, interval estimation based on nonparametric statistics has been proposed in the literature, for example the naive bootstrap method, the iterated bootstrap method and the bootstrap method via a pivotal statistic. In this paper, we propose empirical likelihood methods to construct confidence intervals for the Gini index or the difference of two Gini indices. Simulation studies show that the proposed empirical likelihood method performs slightly worse than the bootstrap method based on a pivotal statistic in terms of coverage accuracy, but it requires less computation. However, the bootstrap calibration of the empirical likelihood method performs better than the bootstrap method based on a pivotal statistic.  相似文献

The main purpose of this paper is to introduce first a new family of empirical test statistics for testing a simple null hypothesis when the vector of parameters of interest is defined through a specific set of unbiased estimating functions. This family of test statistics is based on a distance between two probability vectors, with the first probability vector obtained by maximizing the empirical likelihood (EL) on the vector of parameters, and the second vector defined from the fixed vector of parameters under the simple null hypothesis. The distance considered for this purpose is the phi-divergence measure. The asymptotic distribution is then derived for this family of test statistics. The proposed methodology is illustrated through the well-known data of Newcomb's measurements on the passage time for light. A simulation study is carried out to compare its performance with that of the EL ratio test when confidence intervals are constructed based on the respective statistics for small sample sizes. The results suggest that the ‘empirical modified likelihood ratio test statistic’ provides a competitive alternative to the EL ratio test statistic, and is also more robust than the EL ratio test statistic in the presence of contamination in the data. Finally, we propose empirical phi-divergence test statistics for testing a composite null hypothesis and present some asymptotic as well as simulation results for evaluating the performance of these test procedures.  相似文献

Value at risk (VaR) and expected shortfall (ES) are widely used risk measures of the risk of loss on a specific portfolio of financial assets. Adjusted empirical likelihood (AEL) is an important non parametric likelihood method which is developed from empirical likelihood (EL). It can overcome the limitation of convex hull problems in EL. In this paper, we use AEL method to estimate confidence region for VaR and ES. Theoretically, we find that AEL has the same large sample statistical properties as EL, and guarantees solution to the estimating equations in EL. In addition, simulation results indicate that the coverage probabilities of the new confidence regions are higher than that of the original EL with the same level. These results show that the AEL estimation for VaR and ES deserves to recommend for the real applications.  相似文献

In this article, we employ the jackknife empirical likelihood (JEL) method to construct the confidence regions for the difference of the means of two d-dimensional samples. Compared with traditional EL for the two-sample mean problem, JEL is extremely simpler to use in practice and is more effective in computing. Based on the JEL ratio test, a version of Wilks’ theorem is developed. Furthermore, to improve the coverage accuracy of confidence regions, a Bartlett correction is applied. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by a simulation study and a real data analysis.  相似文献

The INAR(k) model has been widely used in various kinds of fields. However, there are little discussions about the INAR(k) model with the occasional level shift random noise. In this paper, the maximum likelihood estimation of parameter based on martingale difference sequence is given, the log empirical likelihood ratio test statistic is obtained and the test statistic converges to chi-square distribution, we prove that the confidence region of the parameter is convex. Furthermore, the numerical simulation of the proposed INAR(k) model is given, which illustrates the effectiveness of the model. Then, the proofs of asymptotic results are given in the Appendix.  相似文献

The empirical likelihood method is proposed to construct the confidence regions for the difference in value between coefficients of two-sample linear regression model. Unlike existing empirical likelihood procedures for one-sample linear regression models, as the empirical likelihood ratio function is not concave, the usual maximum empirical likelihood estimation cannot be obtained directly. To overcome this problem, we propose to incorporate a natural and well-explained restriction into likelihood function and obtain a restricted empirical likelihood ratio statistic (RELR). It is shown that RELR has an asymptotic chi-squared distribution. Furthermore, to improve the coverage accuracy of the confidence regions, a Bartlett correction is applied. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated by a simulation study.  相似文献

This paper investigates the properties of bootstrap and related methods assuming that the underlying distribution is symmetric but otherwise unknown. In particular it studies the percentile-t, nonparametric tilting and empirical likelihood and finds that the performance of percentile-t and non-parametric tilting methods can be improved by incorporating the symmetry into the resampling procedure. However, for symmetric empirical likelihood, the Bartlett correctability no longer holds, although use of bootstrap calibration restores the good coverage properties typically associated with Bartlett correction. This surprising result shows that Bartlett correctability is a very delicate property.  相似文献

In this article, the problem of interest is testing the conditional heteroscedasticity of Poisson autoregressive model. We construct a non parametric test statistic based on empirical likelihood method. The asymptotic distribution of the proposed statistic is derived and its finite-sample property is examined through Monte Carlo simulations. The simulation results show that the proposed method is good for practical use.  相似文献

The authors study the problem of testing whether two populations have the same law by comparing kernel estimators of the two density functions. The proposed test statistic is based on a local empirical likelihood approach. They obtain the asymptotic distribution of the test statistic and propose a bootstrap approximation to calibrate the test. A simulation study is carried out in which the proposed method is compared with two competitors, and a procedure to select the bandwidth parameter is studied. The proposed test can be extended to more than two samples and to multivariate distributions.  相似文献

Generalized partially linear varying-coefficient models (GPLVCM) are frequently used in statistical modeling. However, the statistical inference of the GPLVCM, such as confidence region/interval construction, has not been very well developed. In this article, empirical likelihood-based inference for the parametric components in the GPLVCM is investigated. Based on the local linear estimators of the GPLVCM, an estimated empirical likelihood-based statistic is proposed. We show that the resulting statistic is asymptotically non-standard chi-squared. By the proposed empirical likelihood method, the confidence regions for the parametric components are constructed. In addition, when some components of the parameter are of particular interest, the construction of their confidence intervals is also considered. A simulation study is undertaken to compare the empirical likelihood and the other existing methods in terms of coverage accuracies and average lengths. The proposed method is applied to a real example.  相似文献

Pairwise likelihood functions are convenient surrogates for the ordinary likelihood, useful when the latter is too difficult or even impractical to compute. One drawback of pairwise likelihood inference is that, for a multidimensional parameter of interest, the pairwise likelihood analogue of the likelihood ratio statistic does not have the standard chi-square asymptotic distribution. Invoking the theory of unbiased estimating functions, this paper proposes and discusses a computationally and theoretically attractive approach based on the derivation of empirical likelihood functions from the pairwise scores. This approach produces alternatives to the pairwise likelihood ratio statistic, which allow reference to the usual asymptotic chi-square distribution and which are useful when the elements of the Godambe information are troublesome to evaluate or in the presence of large data sets with relative small sample sizes. Two Monte Carlo studies are performed in order to assess the finite-sample performance of the proposed empirical pairwise likelihoods.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the application of the empirical likelihood method to a partially linear model with measurement errors in the non-parametric part. It is shown that the empirical log-likelihood ratio at the true parameters converges to the standard chi-square distribution. Furthermore, we obtain the maximum empirical likelihood estimate of the unknown parameter by using the empirical log-likelihood ratio function, and the resulting estimator is shown to be asymptotically normal. Some simulations and an application are conducted to illustrate the proposed method.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the statistical inference for the varying-coefficient partially nonlinear model with additive measurement errors in the nonparametric part. The local bias-corrected profile nonlinear least-squares estimation procedure for parameter in nonlinear function and nonparametric function is proposed. Then, the asymptotic normality properties of the resulting estimators are established. With the empirical likelihood method, a local bias-corrected empirical log-likelihood ratio statistic for the unknown parameter, and a corrected and residual adjusted empirical log-likelihood ratio for the nonparametric component are constructed. It is shown that the resulting statistics are asymptotically chi-square distribution under some suitable conditions. Some simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed methods. The results indicate that the empirical likelihood method is superior to the profile nonlinear least-squares method in terms of the confidence regions of parameter and point-wise confidence intervals of nonparametric function.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the construction of confidence intervals for a nonparametric regression function under linear process errors by using the blockwise technique. It is shown that the blockwise empirical likelihood (EL) ratio statistic is asymptotically distributed. The result is used to obtain EL based confidence intervals for the nonparametric regression function. The finite‐sample performance of the method is evaluated through a simulation study.  相似文献
