城市文明的发展秩序何以可能？

伴随城市化进程的深入,城市逐渐成为我国大多数人生存、生活和发展的共同体。在某种意义上,这一共同体是以对城市文明的追求建构其秩序为基础的,从而城市文明凸显出规范城市发展秩序、提升城市发展品质的价值功能。

从文明比较到轴心时代——史华慈与韦伯对中国古代思想的不同解读

本文关注韦伯与史华慈对中国古代思想解读的关键差异,以及两人在强调中西文明伦理自觉性上的相通性。韦伯的《中国的宗教》在方法论和基本概念的使用上有重要的奠基意义,史华慈关于中国古代思想的研究在很大程度上与韦伯的思想遗产进行了积极对话。韦伯的“文明比较”与史华慈承自雅思贝尔斯的“轴心时代”,代表着看待中国古代文明的两种立场。本文从“‘天-命’与超越性秩序”“‘礼-仁’与人格秩序”“‘学’与社会和政治秩序”三个方面论述了二者的异同。史氏肯定中国古代思想中的超越性以及实然秩序和应然秩序之间的分歧,同时也追随韦伯,认为文明现代性的基础需要从自身的伦理资源中去发现。这意味着中国儒家思想同样包含着韦伯所认为的独属于西方宗教的伦理自觉性,以及此种伦理与世俗的紧张关系。     

市民社会理论中秩序的建构

What Is a Good Corporate Citizen?*

Au caeur du débat sur les corporations multinationales se trouve la question de déterminer si ces corporations agissent en « bons citoyens » Cependant, les critères à utiliser dans une telle analyse n'ont pas retenu l'attention des politicologues, économistes, sociologues et théoriciens en organisation. Certains des critères rencontrés dans les débats actuels et la situation de divers types de corporations par rapport à ces critères font l'objet de cette étude. Les donnés révèlent que, pour certain critères, la nationalité des propiétaires est importante mais que, pour d'autres critères, on observe davantage de variation entre types de corporation qu'entre propriétaires de différentes nationalités. Un nombre de questions sont soulevés au sujet de l'identification du critère le plus important et au sujet de la configuration de critères necessaires pour definir le « bon citoyen corporatif » Il s'agit d'une étude d'exploration visant à soulever des questions concernant un problème relativement peu travaillé en théorie de l'organisation. The question of what is “good corporate citizenship” is presently a central issue in the national debate regarding multinational corporations. However, the criteria used to answer this question have not been dealt with in detail by political scientists, economists, sociologists, or organizational theorists. Some of the criteria which have been raised in the current debate and the extent to which various types of corporations perform in terms of each criterion are examined. The data show that for some criteria the nationality of the corporate owners is important, but for other criteria variations occur between types of corporations rather than between the nationality of the owners. A number of questions are raised regarding which criterion is the most important and which combinations of criteria are necessary in order to determine “good corporate citizenship” in Canada. The paper is exploratory and intended to raise questions for discussion on this relatively unexplored problem in organizational theory.     

"Is Public Sociology Such a Good Idea?"

Michael Burawoy's call for a public sociology disciplined by professional and policy sociology, on the one side, and driven by critical sociology, on the other, exposes the ideological biases of sociology to publics. In so doing, public sociology will thwart non-ideological efforts for sociology to exert influence on broader publics and on political decision-makers. In order for sociology to be able to influence public opinion and the decisions of key players in the political and economic arenas, it will need to earn respect through a long evolutionary process of careful research and explanation without ideological fervor. To expose the ideological biases of sociology will thwart this evolutionary process. In contrast, sociology would be much better to develop an engineering mentality in addressing issues, problems, and concerns of publics in present-day societies.

Is What’s Good for the Business,Good for the Family: A Financial Assessment

Small business prosperity doesn’t necessarily translate into family prosperity. This study utilizes the first and second waves of the National Family Business Survey to explore the influence of changes in key business financial measures on objective and subjective measures of family success. Increases in the available cash in the business from higher gross sales or net profits brings more cash into the household, while increases in the market value of the business increases the amount of money spent on other household assets. A more subjective assessment suggests that positive changes in the business financial measures create a more positive perception of the business’ success; however, these positive changes have no influence on a more positive perception of the family’s success.     

Working Longer May Be Good Public Policy,But It Is Not Necessarily Good for Older People

Older people are facing a changed set of expectations regarding work and retirement. Until quite recently early retirement was being encouraged. Today's older workers, however, are contemplating longer working lives amid policy concerns about the costs of social welfare associated with an aging population. While working longer is, almost universally, being promoted as a social and individual good this article argues that this policy shift is unlikely to change the situation of many older workers who would have needed to continue working anyway. It also argues that the emphasis on prolonged employment undervalues engagement in activities beyond employment. As well, it argues that the emphasis on prolonging employment neglects to account for the attendant risks for many of continuing to work or having to seek work and the potential health- and well-being-enhancing effects of retirement.
