Pragmatism,institutionalism, and the construction of employment discrimination

This paper uses ideas from neoinstitutional theory, as well as insights from the philosophy of pragmatism, to explain the construction of employment discrimination to include a model based on race differences in employment statistics. While some suggest the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in the middle 1960s was the site of an ideological takeover or capture, this paper instead highlights the practical difficulties resulting from the commission's classically liberal founding institutional rules. The raceconscious, statistical model was constructed unintentionally, the result of the pragmatic pursuit of the original goal of effective and expedient enforcement of nondiscrimination.An earlier version of this paper was presented at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, August 1992.     

Pragmatism, Bourdieu, and collective emotions in contentious politics

We aim to show how collective emotions can be incorporated into the study of episodes of political contention. In a critical vein, we systematically explore the weaknesses in extant models of collective action, showing what has been lost through a neglect or faulty conceptualization of collective emotional configurations. We structure this discussion in terms of a review of several “pernicious postulates” in the literature, assumptions that have been held, we argue, by classical social-movement theorists and by social-structural and cultural critics alike. In a reconstructive vein, however, we also lay out the foundations of a more satisfactory theoretical framework. We take each succeeding critique of a pernicious postulate as the occasion for more positive theory-building. Drawing upon the work of the classical American pragmatists–especially Peirce, Dewey, and Mead–as well as aspects of Bourdieu's sociology, we construct, step by step, the foundations of a more adequate theorization of social movements and collective action. Accordingly, the negative and positive threads of our discussion are woven closely together: the dismantling of pernicious postulates and the development of a more useful analytical strategy.     

On Postmodernism,Pragmatism, and Plasterers: Some Interactionist Thoughts and Queries

Postmodernism is assessed as inherently flawed and largely irrelevant to interactionist work. It is suggested that the stage approach used by postmodernists, in which they define themselves as representing the next, superior stage after modernism, be replaced with a lineage approach in order to assess the possible merits of postmodernism. It is argued that such an approach would reveal postmodernism as a weak approximation of interactionist and pragmatist thought.

基督教在近代华人的海外移民过程中发挥了重要作用。在当今时代,华人基督教会在海外华人社会中的作用越来越重要,并逐渐承担起青年培养的责任。它们认识到当代华人青年不仅面临着后现代文化及信息科技发展的巨大冲击,还面临着文化适应及身份认同的困惑。海外华人教会人士对华人青年群体的处境有着较清醒认识,并在具体的实践中付之以适切、有效的培养策略,进而完成海外华人亚文化群体及族裔的建构及认同。

Maculate Conceptions: Power,Process, and Creativity in Participatory Research

Justifiably concerned about power dynamics between researchers and participants in participatory research, much of the literature proposes guidelines for including participant voices at every step of the research process. We find these guidelines insufficient for dealing with constraints set up by the social organizational structures in which researchers and participants find themselves. We argue that the process of building relationships between scientists and farmers is unavoidably imperfect, but nonetheless necessary and rewarding. We contend that the potential problems of participatory research originate more from the social organizational structures in which it takes place than in failure to follow particular rules. By acknowledging these structures and the resultant interests of participant and researcher we can make room for the messy reality of negotiating participatory relationships. We suggest that transformative engagement can be born of what we term the “maculate conceptions” of dialogic process and the building of mutual trust.
