MY mother, Hou Xiangyun, was born into an ordinary family in the Eastern District in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province in the winter of 1890. My grandfather was a clerk in a pen shop. Recalling the Past of My Husband

Song Xiaohan is the widow of the patriotic general He Jifeng, who served in the War of Resistance Against Japan, He Jifeng was once a brigade commander of the 110th Brigade in the 29th Corps under the Kuomintang. In September 1935, he was transferred to Beiping (the old name of Beijing], and was put in charge of defending Wanping County Seat, Fengtai Township, the Pinghan Railway and Lugouqiao areas. On July 7th, 1937, when the Lugouqiao Incident happened he took his place in front of the troups to direct the battle, and issued an order to fight back the Japanese invaders. The commanders and soldiers of the 29th Corps shot the first bullet in the War of Resistance Against Japan.Song Xiaohan met General He Jifeng after the Lugouqiao Incident, and accompanied him through the disturbances of a half century. He Jifeng died in 1980. Now 80 years old Song Xiaohan lives in Beijing and spends her remaining years quietly. She recalled her old days as follows.

SINCE Buddhism was brought to China from India in A.D. 67, it has exerted a great influence on China's traditional culture. Early in the Three Kingdoms period (A.D.220-265), Jianye (now Nanjing), was the capital of the Wu kingdom. It was located in the south of the lower reaches of the Changjiang River, and became the center for Buddhist activities in the south. Up to the Northern and Southern Dynasties (A.D.420-589), rulers of the Southern Dynasties mainly believed in Buddhism.     

Hani Women Gear Up for Opening

Most of the 1.253 million Hani people live in mountainous areas between the Honghe and Lancang rivers in the south of Yunnan Province. The Hani language, with a Latin alphabet similar to the Yi language, was formulated in 1957. Both the Hani and Yi nationalities evolved from the ancient Qiang people. The tribe, called Heyi 300 B.C., is said to be the ancestors of the Hani. The tribe moved south to Mount Ailao and Mount Wuliang, the present home of the Hani. The social development of the Hani was unbalanced at the founding of New China in 1949. The area inhabited by the Hani nationality belonged to the feudal society, with some areas still at the end of the primitive society. The Hani people tend to live in the mountainous areas at between 1000- 2500 meters above sea level. The Hani, who have engaged in agriculture for generations, have mastered method for reclaiming the terraced fields, which was included in the "Agriculture Encyclopedia" by Xu Guangqi, a scientist in the Ming Dynasty.
