日本人为何长寿

世界卫生组织日前发表的2006年《世界卫生报告》显示，日本人均寿命为82岁，保持着世界第一长寿国的地位。这一报告还显示，中国男性平均寿命70岁，女性74岁，人均寿命为72岁。     

没有军队的国家

DETERMINING THE OPTIMAL NUMBER OF BID SOLICITATIONS1

This paper analyzes three simple search models, in which a buyer with full knowledge of the distribution of market prices searches for a low price. He continues his search until the cost of further search exceeds the expected savings resulting from the further search. The implications of these models are also discussed.     

MULTIPERIOD SEARCH MODELS FOR AN UNKNOWN NUMBER OF VALUABLE OBJECTS

In this paper we examine multiperiod search models for cases in which the number of valuable objects is unknown. The objective is to maximize the expected total returns during the planning horizon, subject to an effort constraint. Using a Bayesian approach, we examine the model for three different priors for the number of valuable objects, and we show that the different priors (binomial, Poisson and negative binomial) lead to such conceptually different results as adaptive and nonadaptive optimal policies. The models can be applied to many areas including mineral explorations, marketing promotion activities and intelligence information.     

AN ANALYSIS OF PURCHASING COSTS AS THE NUMBER OF PRODUCTS‘ COMPONENTS IS REDUCED

Product design efforts in recent years have focused on standardization and simplification of the product structure. It has been widely argued that savings, tangible and intangible, can be realized by simplifying the product design. In this study, we examine this belief and show that other issues like flexibility of process and design are important as well. We demonstrate that having process flexibility, e.g., of producing a product in two different ways, using two different product structures (as opposed to one), is advantageous with respect to components purchasing costs. This result is in contrast with the notion of standardization since the variety of components in the flexible design is increased. Properties of savings in purchasing costs associated with the use of this flexible design are provided.
