This paper describes the structure and use of a general purpose simulation package developed for the interactive construction of dynamic computer-based simulation models. The package consists of a system of computer programs written in the BASIC language for a Digital PDP 11/70 time-sharing computer.The framework upon which the package is based is essentially an amalgamation of the System Dynamics and Input-Output approaches to the modelling of complex organizations. Networks of levels and flows provide the basis for dynamic, modular representation, while matrix algebra features provide the basis for aggregational flexibility and the analysis of multi- product multi-process industrial systems.The package is designed to provide planning managers with the ability to construct flexible models, localized or ‘corporate’, financial or non-financial, without the need for any programming in the conventional sense. A flow diagram of the system to be modelled guides the model builder in responding to computer terminal prompts which determine the model structure as a set of programmed relationships. This in turn gives rise to a further series of prompts at the terminal for the entry of all data pertinent to the model. Model editing and computation then proceeds, with user interaction, if desired, for amendments, monitoring of computations, and report generation.Two specific applications of the package are discussed in the latter part of the paper, and sample output from runs of both of the resultant models is provided.  相似文献

Just a year ago, in the March-April 1989 issue of Harvard Business Review, Professor Regina E. Herzlinger of the Harvard Business School took a long look at the U.S. health care system and declared the much touted revolution in the health care delivery system a failure. This article is a summary of the arguments that Professor Herzlinger marshaled for her treatise. In the following two articles, members of the College assess those arguments in terms of the medical management profession and in terms of the organizations, a hospital and a managed care company, for which they work. This paper explores a new organizational form—modular organization—through a case-study approach. The aim is to isolate the specific properties that set this form apart from other known organizational forms. The case studies examined focus on the manufacturing process of small, medium and large companies in different industries, and provide a clear picture of modular organization. The analysis shows that modular organizations are an innovation per se and not the mere outcome of modular products. Modular organizations leverage decomposition by employing small units within a larger organization. Each unit is responsible for a specific domain, it is quasi-independent and makes autonomous decisions on various business issues. Modular organizations deal with suppliers directly, and are characterized by a flat structure. Companies based on modular organization can improve their efficiency in the high-tech and mature markets, and fully exploit their resources.

This paper presents evidence that corporate governance quality measured by (1) the board size and (2) the fraction of directors that serve on more corporate boards, influences the market value of firms. The analysis is based in Italy, a country that is characterized by family and concentrated ownership, low legal protection of investors and pyramidal firm structures. Our empirical results suggest that the level of ‘busy-ness’ of corporate directors as a measure of board effectiveness has a significant influence on firm’s market performance. By contrast, we find limited evidence that board size has a substantial impact on the market valuation, except in small and medium enterprises and in some specific industry sectors.

Di Pietra’s main research interests are in International Accounting (IAS/IFRS and Financial statements, IAS and corporate governance, accounting regulation, IAS and organizational learning), in Auditing and in Accounting History. Christos A. Grambovas   is currently at the Centre for the Analysis of Investment Risk of the Manchester Business School, The University of Manchester. Prior to his appointment in MBS, Christos held joint positions as a teaching and research fellow in the University of Wales, Bangor and post-doctoral research fellow in the University of Valencia. While undertaking his PhD (Wales), he was a research fellow in the University of Valencia and the Autonoma University of Madrid, as part of the EU research project ‘Harmonia’. Ivana Raonic   is Lecturer in Accounting and Finance at the CASS Business School City of London. She received a PhD in Accounting and Finance at the University of Wales. She has joined Cass Business School in 2004 and previously she has taught at the University of Siena where she spent two years as a post-doctoral research fellow. Ivana’s research interests are particularly focused on Capital markets, Corporate governance and Earnings properties. Angelo Riccaboni   is Dean of the Richard Goodwin School of Economics, University of Siena, where he teaches Management Control. As the capability of new computer systems becomes increasingly sophisticated, so does the application of computer techniques to financial and strategic planning become more relevant to management. Planning and practically all forms of decision-making are concerned with the future, which necessarily is uncertain and therefore difficult to plan for. Forecasting methods, however, can suggest trends and it is possible to reduce the number of possible futures to a manageable number, in effect, creating scenarios. But the viewing of multiple scenarios in a manual accounting system is impractical, given the sheer volume of work, and this is where the facilities offered by computerization can assist decision-making greatly. The case study illustrated here concerns a multinational company with production facilities in seven different countries, using a sophisticated financial software packege for strategic and financial planning applications. The article traces the development of Tioxide's association with a financial modelling package, Planmaster, from initial use on a time-sharing basis to the changes in hardware manufacture which made it possible to run what is essentially a mainframe program on the desk-top microcomputer of the planning department.  相似文献

This paper discusses results of a longitudinal field experiment to evaluate the implementation of a computer-based system. This new system includes the introduction of an optically scanned order input form and new computer programs. It is hypothesized that successful implementation would be affected by the quality of service and the personal costs and benefits to the users of the new system. The experimental results show a marked reduction in job satisfaction after implementation of the new system. The implications of the findings for the implementation of computer-based systems in general are discussed.  相似文献

This paper reports the results of a study undertaken to evaluate the validity of requirements for admission to Florida State University's Graduate Program in Management offered by its School of Business in the Cape Kennedy Area of Florida. A multiple regression study was made using as independent variables students' undergraduate grade point average (UGPA), Graduate Record Examination aptitude test score (GRE), and age (AGE) at time of admission. The dependent variable was graduate grade point average (GGPA). The study revealed a significant positive correlation between GRE and GGPA. The correlation between AGE and GGPA was also significant but was positive for values of AGE up to approximately 29 and negative thereafter. UGPA was not even marginally significant.  相似文献

Business friendships are increasingly common. Research in organizational behavior has identified a number of benefits to career and organizational performance of these relationships. These instrumental benefits derive from the affective qualities of these relationships, through the mechanisms of trust, empathy and sympathy. Yet the combination of instrumentality and affect produces a number of difficulties for business friends. Business friendships represent potential threats to the self-concept of friends if they obtain differential business outcomes; they involve the exchange of resources which are incompatible; and they represent contrasting norms of reciprocity. We also present new evidence that people prefer affective and instrumental relationships to be embedded in very different network structures. This evidence presents a non-trivial challenge to embedding business friendships, which represent both affect and instrumentality. We recommend that the field respond to these challenges by considering the impact of business friendships on broad outcome variables such as wellbeing that may reflect both the benefits and tensions of those relationships, and by evaluating the approaches available to effectively manage business friendships.  相似文献

It is often said that success in today's competitive environment depends on the acquisition and application of sound, relevant knowledge. This paper introduces two management science approaches that have been used for the effective management of knowledge, towards the development of strategy, planning and decision making, in a wide range of organizational settings. Both approaches make use of computer technology to provide a flexible and interactive environment incorporating a visual representation of the problem. The paper briefly describes each approach, together with a case study illustrating its use in practice. A number of common themes relevant to the management of knowledge are identified and discussed. The objectives and activities of Bell Canada's Business Planning group are outlined. The Business Planning process of obtaining inputs, organizing the data base, and creating outputs is elaborated. Inputs are derived from original research efforts such as trend extrapolation, Delphi research and survey research. Selected results from Business Planning studies are illustrated. Inputs obtained through secondary research activities are also outlined. The creation of a key-word-indexed on-line information retrieval system to organize the data base is described. The Research Excellence Framework 2014 (REF 2014) was the 7th formal assessment of research in UK universities and other institutions of higher education. Participation in these assessments is voluntary, and institutions can decide which staff to include and under which discipline to include them. A hundred and one institutions chose to submit research in Business and Management Studies, and this work was assessed by a panel of academic researchers and research users nominated by a wide range of academic constituencies. The previous assessment exercise was conducted in 2008, and REF 2014 shows that the quality of UK research in Business and Management Studies, already high in 2008, has improved since then. The operation of the Business and Management Studies sub‐panel is described, the results are summarized, and a few caveats are discussed so as to aid the Business and Management Studies community in its endeavours to understand and evaluate the process and the results.  相似文献

Martin K. Starr facilitated the creation of an identity for production and operations management (POM) as an academic discipline. This paper aims to summarize Starr's substantial contributions to scholarly inquiry on system integration and interfunctional coordination, modular production, and catastrophe avoidance. Even after four decades, we describe how his legacy in these areas continues to define several major drivers of operations and supply chain management research and practice. Starr has influenced several generations of students, professors, and executives with his writings, teaching, and leadership roles in the POM community that include 32 years on the faculty of the Columbia School of Business, 15 years as Editor‐in‐Chief of Management Science, and presidency of the Production and Operations Management Society.  相似文献

This article examines how customer value may be affected by deploying radio frequency identification (RFID) technologies within service environments. Business articles promote operational cost savings and improved inventory management as key benefits of deploying RFID. In response, service firms are using RFID to reengineer service transactions and customer touchpoints. Customers may view these RFID applications to offer both benefits and drawbacks. This article demonstrates that individuals will recognize far more value from RFID service applications than just cost savings and inventory availability. The article analyzes qualitative survey responses on the value gained from RFID to identify a broad list of value objectives—benefits and drawbacks—associated with RFID service applications. The article contributes to academic literature by providing salient value dimensions for return on investment models of service RFID applications and for future empirical analyses of means‐ends and value‐profit chain models. Managers can use the list of dimensions to develop rich business cases for evaluating the benefits and costs from enhancing service operations with RFID. The identified drawbacks also provide managers with a resource for understanding potential risks of RFID applications.  相似文献

A research project has been initiated in Denmark by the Ministry of Business and Industry and the Danish Business Development Council which aims at giving a coherent picture of the situation for innovation by focusing on different levels of aggregation in the Danish system of innovation. An account of the main idea behind the project, its theoretical foundation and some results from the first part of the project are given in this article. The first part of the project is an investigation into the position and condition of flexibility and renewal in Danish companies. It is divided into two studies. The first study investigates the situation for flexibility and renewal in Danish companies and is based on a questionnaire. The second study follows up the results from the first study through a qualitative investigation in which the objective is to display some of the commonly seen and important factors that facilitate or inhibit the introduction of more flexible organizational forms in Danish companies.  相似文献

This research analysed and optimised the assembly line balance of notebook computer system production lines in a major computer plant. The research developed a mathematical model for balancing assembly lines of a specific notebook computer system. Precedence relationship charts were created to enforce the required sequences and ILOG CPLEX software was used to obtain the optimal solution of the task assignments to the workstations. The new task assignments were simulated to verify the improvement recommendations and predict the potential benefits.The estimated improvements include: (1) 5.9% increase in average daily production; (2) 29% decrease in average daily WIP; (3) 67.9% reduction in cycle time; (4) 16.7% reduction in operator headcount over the whole system assembly area. The contributions of this research include: (1) Establishing line balancing mathematical model suitable for notebook computer factories; (2) Optimising the system assembly lines for the subject company; (3) Transferring the line balance modelling and optimisation techniques for company use.  相似文献
