In spite of the recent steady increase of the volume of the second-hand markets, often customers remain in doubt regarding the quality and durability of the second-hand products. Aiming to reduce and share this uncertainty, dealers offer warranty on their products. Offering warranty for second-hand products is a relatively new marketing strategy employed by dealers of used electronic equipment, furniture, automobiles, etc. Usually, for used products, the dealer's expected warranty cost is a function of product reliability, past age and usage, servicing strategy and conditions and terms of the warranty policy/contract. Sometimes the offered policy is limited by two parameters, typically the product age and usage after the sale. This type of policies is referred to as two-dimensional warranty policies. In this article, we develop statistical models for estimating the dealer's expected warranty cost for second-hand products sold with two-dimensional free repair/replacement warranty.  相似文献

Two-dimensional renewal functions, which are naturally extensions of one-dimensional renewal functions, have wide applicability in areas where two random variables are needed to characterize the underlying process. These functions satisfy the renewal equation, which is not amenable for analytical solutions. This paper proposes a simple approximation for the computation of the two- dimensional renewal function based only on the first two moments and the correlation coefficient of the variables. The approximation yields exact values of renewal function for bivariate exponential distribution function. Illustrations are presented to compare our approximation with that of Iskandar (1991) who provided a computational procedure which requires the use of the bivariate distribution function of the two variables. A two-dimensional warranty model is used to illustrate the approximation.  相似文献

This paper examines long‐range dependence (LRD) and asymptotic properties of Markov renewal processes generalizing results of Daley for renewal processes. The Hurst index and discrepancy function, which is the difference between the expected number of arrivals in (0, t] given a point at 0 and the number of arrivals in (0, t] in the time stationary version, are examined in terms of the moment index. The moment index is the supremum of the set of r > 0 such that the rth moment of the first return time to a state is finite, employing the solidarity results of Sgibnev. The results are derived for irreducible, regular Markov renewal processes on countable state spaces. The paper also derives conditions to determine the moment index of the first return times in terms of the Markov renewal kernel distribution functions of the process.  相似文献

In this article, we propose a simple method of constructing confidence intervals for a function of binomial success probabilities and for a function of Poisson means. The method involves finding an approximate fiducial quantity (FQ) for the parameters of interest. A FQ for a function of several parameters can be obtained by substitution. For the binomial case, the fiducial approach is illustrated for constructing confidence intervals for the relative risk and the ratio of odds. Fiducial inferential procedures are also provided for estimating functions of several Poisson parameters. In particular, fiducial inferential approach is illustrated for interval estimating the ratio of two Poisson means and for a weighted sum of several Poisson means. Simple approximations to the distributions of the FQs are also given for some problems. The merits of the procedures are evaluated by comparing them with those of existing asymptotic methods with respect to coverage probabilities, and in some cases, expected widths. Comparison studies indicate that the fiducial confidence intervals are very satisfactory, and they are comparable or better than some available asymptotic methods. The fiducial method is easy to use and is applicable to find confidence intervals for many commonly used summary indices. Some examples are used to illustrate and compare the results of fiducial approach with those of other available asymptotic methods.  相似文献

This paper proposes a geometric process warranty model. Assume that a combination policy (W, T) is applied after selling a product, so that a free warranty is offered in [0, W), followed by a pro-rata warranty in [W, T). Assume further the successive operating times (repair times) of the product form a decreasing (increasing) geometric process. The average cost rate of the product to the manufacturer and a consumer can be derived respectively. For exponential distribution case, the explicit formulas of the average cost rate are obtained, and an finite algorithm for determination of an optimal combination policy is suggested.  相似文献

Detecting the number of signals and estimating the parameters of the signals is an important problem in signal processing. Quite a number of papers appeared in the last twenty years regarding the estimation of the parameters of the sinusoidal components but not that much of attention has been given in estimating the number of terms present in a sinusoidal signal. Fuchs developed a criterion based on the perturbation analysis of the data auto correlation matrix to estimate the number of sinusoids, which is in some sense a subjective-based method. Recently Reddy and Biradar proposed two criteria based on AIC and MDL and developed an analytical framework for analyzing the performance of these criteria. In this paper we develop a method using the extended order modelling and singular value decomposition technique similar to that of Reddy and Biradar. We use penalty function technique but instead of using any fixed penalty function like AIC or MDL, a class of penalty functions satisfying some special properties has been used. We prove that any penalty function from that special class will give consistent estimate under the assumptions that the error random variables are independent and identically distributed with mean zero and finite variance. We also obtain the probabilities of wrong detection for any particular penalty function under somewhat weaker assumptions than that of Reddy and Biradar of Kaveh et al. It gives some idea to choose the proper penalty function for any particular model. Simulations are performed to verify the usefulness of the analysis and to compare our methods with the existing ones.  相似文献

The covariance of the number of renewals in a fixed time N t and the ensuing excess life time Y t is derived using matrix-analytic methods for the stationary PH-renewal process. Specific results for the Erlang and hyperexponential processes are provided to illustrate the ease of computation. Properties concerning the sign and the behavior of the covariance as t→∞ are provided throughout. Parameter estimation for renewal processes which cannot be fully observed serves as the motivation for our derivations. These statistical applications as well as links to estimation for service time distributions in queues shed light on the type of problems for which the covariance is useful.  相似文献

Recently, Kambo and his co-researchers (2012) proposed a method of approximation for evaluating the one-dimensional renewal function based on the first three moments. Their method is simple and elegant, which gives exact values for well-known distributions. In this article, we propose an analogous method for the evaluation of bivariate renewal function based on the first two moments of the variables and their joint moment. The proposed method yields exact results for certain widely used bivariate distributions like bivariate exponential distribution, bivariate Weibull distributions, and bivariate Pareto distributions. An illustrative example in the form of a two-dimensional warranty problem is considered and comparisons of our method are made with the results of other models.  相似文献

Abstract

In this paper, we deal with the problem of estimating the delayed renewal and variance functions in delayed renewal processes. Two parametric plug-in estimators for these functions are proposed and their unbiasedness, asymptotic unbiasedness and consistency properties are investigated. The asymptotic normality of these estimators are established. Further, a method for the computation of the estimators is given. Finally, the performances of the estimators are evaluated for small sample sizes by a simulation study.  相似文献

Motivated by several practical issues, we consider the problem of estimating the mean of a p-variate population (not necessarily normal) with unknown finite covariance. A quadratic loss function is used. We give a number of estimators (for the mean) with their loss functions admitting expansions to the order of p ?1/2 as p→∞. These estimators contain Stein's [Inadmissibility of the usual estimator for the mean of a multivariate normal population, in Proceedings of the Third Berkeley Symposium in Mathematical Statistics and Probability, Vol. 1, J. Neyman, ed., University of California Press, Berkeley, 1956, pp. 197–206] estimate as a particular case and also contain ‘multiple shrinkage’ estimates improving on Stein's estimate. Finally, we perform a simulation study to compare the different estimates.  相似文献

In a Poisson process, it is well-known that the forward and backward recurrence times at a given time point t are independent random variables. In a renewal process, although the joint distribution of these quantities is known (asymptotically), it seems that very few results regarding their covariance function exist. In the present paper, we study this covariance and, in particular, we state both necessary and sufficient conditions for it to be positive, zero or negative in terms of reliability classifications and the coefficient of variation of the underlying inter-renewal and the associated equilibrium distribution. Our results apply either for an ordinary renewal process in the steady state or for a stationary process.  相似文献

In this article, the expected total costs of three kinds of quality cost functions for the one-sided sequential screening procedure based on the individual misclassification error are obtained, where the expected total cost is the sum of the expected cost of inspection, the expected cost of rejection, and the expected cost of quality. The computational formulas for three kinds of expected total costs are derived when k screening variables are allocated into r stages. The optimal allocation combination is determined based on the criterion of minimum expected total cost. At last, we give one example to illustrate the selection of the optimal allocation combination for the sequential screening procedure.  相似文献

Fisher's Linear Discriminant Function Can be used to classify an individual who has sampled from one of two multivariate normal Populations. In the following, this function is viewed as the other given his data vector it is assumed that the Population means and common covariance matrix are unknown. The vector of discriminant coeffients β(p×1) is the gradient of posterior log-odds and certain of its lineqar functions are directional derivatives which have a practical meaning. Accordingly, we treat the problems of estimating several linear functions of β The usual estimatoes of these functions are scaled versions of the unbiased estmators. In this Paper, these estimators are domainated by explicit alterenatives under a quadratic loss function. we reduce the problem of estimating β to that of estimating the inverse convariance matrix.  相似文献

In the analysis of recurrent events where the primary interest lies in studying covariate effects on the expected number of events occurring over a period of time, it is appealing to base models on the cumulative mean function (CMF) of the processes (Lawless & Nadeau 1995). In many chronic diseases, however, more than one type of event is manifested. Here we develop a robust inference procedure for joint regression models for the CMFs arising from a bivariate point process. Consistent parameter estimates with robust variance estimates are obtained via unbiased estimating functions for the CMFs. In most situations, the covariance structure of the bivariate point processes is difficult to specify correctly, but when it is known, an optimal estimating function for the CMFs can be obtained. As a convenient model for more general settings, we suggest the use of the estimating functions arising from bivariate mixed Poisson processes. Simulation studies demonstrate that the estimators based on this working model are practically unbiased with robust variance estimates. Furthermore, hypothesis tests may be based on the generalized Wald or generalized score tests. Data from a trial of patients with bronchial asthma are analyzed to illustrate the estimation and inference procedures.  相似文献

Bayesian analysis of discrete time warranty data   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary.  The analysis of warranty claim data, and their use for prediction, has been a topic of active research in recent years. Field data comprising numbers of units returned under guarantee are examined, covering both situations in which the ages of the failed units are known and in which they are not. The latter case poses particular computational problems for likelihood-based methods because of the large number of feasible failure patterns that must be included as contributions to the likelihood function. For prediction of future warranty exposure, which is of central concern to the manufacturer, the Bayesian approach is adopted. For this, Markov chain Monte Carlo methodology is developed.  相似文献

We study the invariance properties of various test criteria which have been proposed for hypothesis testing in the context of incompletely specified models, such as models which are formulated in terms of estimating functions (Godambe, 1960) or moment conditions and are estimated by generalized method of moments (GMM) procedures (Hansen, 1982), and models estimated by pseudo-likelihood (Gouriéroux, Monfort, and Trognon, 1984b,c) and M-estimation methods. The invariance properties considered include invariance to (possibly nonlinear) hypothesis reformulations and reparameterizations. The test statistics examined include Wald-type, LR-type, LM-type, score-type, and C(α)?type criteria. Extending the approach used in Dagenais and Dufour (1991), we show first that all these test statistics except the Wald-type ones are invariant to equivalent hypothesis reformulations (under usual regularity conditions), but all five of them are not generally invariant to model reparameterizations, including measurement unit changes in nonlinear models. In other words, testing two equivalent hypotheses in the context of equivalent models may lead to completely different inferences. For example, this may occur after an apparently innocuous rescaling of some model variables. Then, in view of avoiding such undesirable properties, we study restrictions that can be imposed on the objective functions used for pseudo-likelihood (or M-estimation) as well as the structure of the test criteria used with estimating functions and generalized method of moments (GMM) procedures to obtain invariant tests. In particular, we show that using linear exponential pseudo-likelihood functions allows one to obtain invariant score-type and C(α)?type test criteria, while in the context of estimating function (or GMM) procedures it is possible to modify a LR-type statistic proposed by Newey and West (1987) to obtain a test statistic that is invariant to general reparameterizations. The invariance associated with linear exponential pseudo-likelihood functions is interpreted as a strong argument for using such pseudo-likelihood functions in empirical work.  相似文献

In many applications, the parameters of interest are estimated by solving non‐smooth estimating functions with U‐statistic structure. Because the asymptotic covariances matrix of the estimator generally involves the underlying density function, resampling methods are often used to bypass the difficulty of non‐parametric density estimation. Despite its simplicity, the resultant‐covariance matrix estimator depends on the nature of resampling, and the method can be time‐consuming when the number of replications is large. Furthermore, the inferences are based on the normal approximation that may not be accurate for practical sample sizes. In this paper, we propose a jackknife empirical likelihood‐based inferential procedure for non‐smooth estimating functions. Standard chi‐square distributions are used to calculate the p‐value and to construct confidence intervals. Extensive simulation studies and two real examples are provided to illustrate its practical utilities.  相似文献

In this paper, the expected total costs (ETCs) of three kinds of quality cost functions for the two-sided sequential screening procedure (SQSP) based on the individual misclassification error are obtained, where the ETC is the sum of the expected cost of inspection, the expected cost of rejection and the expected cost of quality. The general formulas for all the desired probabilities and three ETCs when k screening variables are allocated into r-stages are derived. The optimal allocation combination for each ETC is determined based on the criterion of minimum ETC. Finally, we give two examples to illustrate the selection of the optimal allocation combination for the SQSP.  相似文献

Parameter reduction can enable otherwise infeasible design and uncertainty studies with modern computational science models that contain several input parameters. In statistical regression, techniques for sufficient dimension reduction (SDR) use data to reduce the predictor dimension of a regression problem. A computational scientist hoping to use SDR for parameter reduction encounters a problem: a computer prediction is best represented by a deterministic function of the inputs, so data comprised of computer simulation queries fail to satisfy the SDR assumptions. To address this problem, we interpret SDR methods sliced inverse regression (SIR) and sliced average variance estimation (SAVE) as estimating the directions of a ridge function, which is a composition of a low-dimensional linear transformation with a nonlinear function. Within this interpretation, SIR and SAVE estimate matrices of integrals whose column spaces are contained in the ridge directions’ span; we analyze and numerically verify convergence of these column spaces as the number of computer model queries increases. Moreover, we show example functions that are not ridge functions but whose inverse conditional moment matrices are low-rank. Consequently, the computational scientist should beware when using SIR and SAVE for parameter reduction, since SIR and SAVE may mistakenly suggest that truly important directions are unimportant.

In bayesian inference, the Bayes estimator is the alternative with the minimum expected loss. In most cases, the loss function shows the distance between the alternative and the parameter. Therefore, any distance can lead to a loss function. Among the best known distance functions is L p one, where the choice of value p may be difficult and arbitrary. This paper examines robust models where the loss function is modelled by family L p . Our solution concept is the non-dominated alternative. We characterize the non-dominated set by having the posterior distribution function satisfy a particular asymmetry property. We also include an example to illustrate the methodology described.  相似文献
