This paper considers the likelihood ratio (LR) tests of stationarity, common trends and cointegration for multivariate time series. As the distribution of these tests is not known, a bootstrap version is proposed via a state- space representation. The bootstrap samples are obtained from the Kalman filter innovations under the null hypothesis. Monte Carlo simulations for the Gaussian univariate random walk plus noise model show that the bootstrap LR test achieves higher power for medium-sized deviations from the null hypothesis than a locally optimal and one-sided Lagrange Multiplier (LM) test that has a known asymptotic distribution. The power gains of the bootstrap LR test are significantly larger for testing the hypothesis of common trends and cointegration in multivariate time series, as the alternative asymptotic procedure – obtained as an extension of the LM test of stationarity – does not possess properties of optimality. Finally, it is shown that the (pseudo-)LR tests maintain good size and power properties also for the non-Gaussian series. An empirical illustration is provided.  相似文献

We consider a set of variables with two types of nonstationary features, stochastic trends and broken linear trends. We develop tests that can determine whether there is a linear combination of these variables under which the nonstationary features can be canceled out. The first test can determine whether stochastic trends can be eliminated and thus whether cointegration holds, regardless of whether structural breaks in linear trends are eliminated. The second test can determine whether both stochastic trends and breaks in linear trends are simultaneously removed and thus whether cointegration and cobreaking simultaneously hold. The third test can determine whether not only breaks in linear trends but also linear trends themselves are eliminated along with stochastic trends and thus whether both cointegration and cotrending hold.  相似文献

In this article, we extend the functional-coefficient cointegration model (FCCM) to the cases in which nonstationary regressors contain both stochastic and deterministic trends. A nondegenerate distributional theory on the local linear (LL) regression smoother of the FCCM is explored. It is demonstrated that even when integrated regressors are endogenous, the limiting distribution is the same as if they were exogenous. Finite-sample performance of the LL estimator is investigated via Monte Carlo simulations in comparison with an alternative estimation method. As an application of the FCCM, electricity demand analysis in Illinois is considered.  相似文献

This paper provides a theoretical overview of Wald tests for Granger causality in levels vector autoregressions (VAR's) and Johansen-type error correction models (ECM's). The theory is based on results in Toda and Phillips (1991a) and allows for stochastic and deterministic trends as well as arbitrary degrees of cointegration. We recommend some operational procedures for conducting Granger causality tests that are based on the Gaussian maximum likelihood estimation of ECM's. These procedures are applicable in the important practical case of testing the causal effects of one variable on another group of variables and vice versa. This paper also investigates the sampling properties of these testing procedures through simulation exercises. Three sequential causality tests in ECM's are compared with conventional causality tests in levels and differences VAR's.  相似文献

In this paper we propose residual-based tests for the null hypothesis of cointegration with a structural break against the alternative of no cointegration. The Lagrange Multiplier (LM) test is proposed and its limiting distribution is obtained for the case in which the timing of a structural break is known. Then the test statistic is extended to deal with a structural break of unknown timing. The test statistic, a plug-in version of the test statistic for known timing, replaces the true break point by the estimated one. We show the limiting properties of the test statistic under the null as well as the alternative. Critical values are calculated for the tests by simulation methods. Finite-sample simulations show that the empirical size of the test is close to the nominal one unless the regression error is very persistent and that the test rejects the null when no cointegrating relationship with a structural break is present. We provide empirical examples based on the present-value model, the term structure model, and the money-output relationship model.  相似文献

A method of information-criterion-based cointegration detection using dynamic factor models is proposed. The results of the data-based and non data-based Monte Carlo simulations suggest that this method is as effective as conventional hypothesis-testing methods. In the proposed method, an observed multivariate time series is described in terms of common stochastic trends plus stationary autoregressive cycles. Then the best model is selected from among alternative models obtained by changing the number of common stochastic trends, on the basis of information criteria. Consequently, the cointegration rank is determined on the basis of the selected model. Two advantages of the proposed method are also discussed.  相似文献

Risk of investing in a financial asset is quantified by functionals of squared returns. Discrete time stochastic volatility (SV) models impose a convenient and practically relevant time series dependence structure on the log-squared returns. Different long-term risk characteristics are postulated by short-memory SV and long-memory SV models. It is therefore important to test which of these two alternatives is suitable for a specific asset. Most standard tests are confounded by deterministic trends. This paper introduces a new, wavelet-based, test of the null hypothesis of short versus long memory in volatility which is robust to deterministic trends. In finite samples, the test performs better than currently available tests which are based on the Fourier transform.  相似文献

This paper considers the asymptotic analysis of the likelihood ratio (LR), cointegration (CI) rank test in vector autoregressive models (VAR) when some CI vectors are known and fixed. It is shown that the limit law is free of nuisance parameters. In the case of LR tests against the alternative of completely unrestricted CI space, the limit law can be expressed as the convolution of known distributions. This deconvolution is employed to approximate the quantiles of the distribution, without resorting to new simulations.  相似文献

This paper compares and generalizes some testing procedures for structural change in the context of cointegrated regression models. The Lagrange Multiplier (LM) tests proposod by Hansen (1992) are generalized to testing for partial structural change. An exponential average LM test is also suggested following the idea of Andrews and Ploberger (1992). In particular, an optimal test for cointegration is developed. We also propose a new cointegration test which is robust to a possible one-time discrete jump in the intercept. We tabulate the asymptotic critical values for the above tests and conduct a small Monte Carlo simulation to investigate their finite sample performance.  相似文献

In this paper we provide a comprehensive Bayesian posterior analysis of trend determination in general autoregressive models. Multiple lag autoregressive models with fitted drifts and time trends as well as models that allow for certain types of structural change in the deterministic components are considered. We utilize a modified information matrix-based prior that accommodates stochastic nonstationarity, takes into account the interactions between long-run and short-run dynamics and controls the degree of stochastic nonstationarity permitted. We derive analytic posterior densities for all of the trend determining parameters via the Laplace approximation to multivariate integrals. We also address the sampling properties of our posteriors under alternative data generating processes by simulation methods. We apply our Bayesian techniques to the Nelson-Plosser macroeconomic data and various stock price and dividend data. Contrary to DeJong and Whiteman (1989a,b,c), we do not find that the data overwhelmingly favor the existence of deterministic trends over stochastic trends. In addition, we find evidence supporting Perron's (1989) view that some of the Nelson and Plosser data are best construed as trend stationary with a change in the trend function occurring at 1929.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider testing for linearity against a well-known class of regime switching models known as the smooth transition autoregressive (STAR) models. Apart from the model selection issues, one reason for interest in testing for linearity in time-series models is that non-linear models such as the STAR are considerably more difficult to use. This testing problem is non-standard because a nuisance parameter becomes unidentified under the null hypothesis. In this paper, we further explore the class of tests proposed by Luukkonen, Saikonnen and Terasvirta (1988). Luukkonen et al . (1988) proposed LM tests for linearity against STAR models. A potential difficulty here is that the linear approximation introduces high leverage points, and hence outliers are likely to be quite influential. To overcome this difficulty, we use the same approximating linear model of Luukkonen et al . (1988), but we apply Wald and F -tests based on l 1 - and bounded influence estimates. The efficiency gains of this procedure cannot be easily deduced from the existing theoretical results because the test is based on a misspecified model under H 1 . Therefore, we carried out a simulation study, in which we observed that the robust tests have desirable properties compared to the test of Luukkonen et al . (1988) for a range of error distributions in the STAR model, in particular the robust tests have power advantages over the LM test.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper discusses Johansen’s likelihood ratio tests to determine the cointegration rank under local alternative hypotheses in the vector autoregressive models (VARs) in which drift or linear trend related to the hypotheses is not dependent upon the sample size, and evaluates related asymptotic properties. We show that the test statistics diverge at the rate of the sample size even under one of local alternative hypotheses, owing to the existence of such a deterministic term. This implies that under our situations, the tests are far more powerful than those under the conventional local alternative hypotheses.  相似文献

This article modifies and extends the test against nonstationary stochastic seasonality proposed by Canova and Hansen. A simplified form of the test statistic in which the nonparametric correction for serial correlation is based on estimates of the spectrum at the seasonal frequencies is considered and shown to have the same asymptotic distribution as the original formulation. Under the null hypothesis, the distribution of the seasonality test statistics is not affected by the inclusion of trends, even when modified to allow for structural breaks, or by the inclusion of regressors with nonseasonal unit roots. A parametric version of the test is proposed, and its performance is compared with that of the nonparametric test using Monte Carlo experiments. A test that allows for breaks in the seasonal pattern is then derived. It is shown that its asymptotic distribution is independent of the break point, and its use is illustrated with a series on U.K. marriages. A general test against any form of permanent seasonality, deterministic or stochastic, is suggested and compared with a Wald test for the significance of fixed seasonal dummies. It is noted that tests constructed in a similar way can be used to detect trading-day effects. An appealing feature of the proposed test statistics is that under the null hypothesis, they all have asymptotic distributions belonging to the Cramér–von Mises family.  相似文献

Tests for the cointegrating rank of a vector autoregressive process are considered that allow for possible exogenous shifts in the mean of the data-generation process. The break points are assumed to be known a priori. It is proposed to estimate and remove the deterministic terms such as mean, linear-trend term, and a shift in a first step. Then systems cointegration tests are applied to the adjusted series. The resulting tests are shown to have known limiting null distributions that are free of nuisance parameters and do not depend on the break point. The tests are applied for analyzing the number of cointegrating relations in two German money-demand systems.  相似文献

Results from a power study of six statistics for testing that a sample is from a uniform distribution on the unit interval (0,1) are reported. The test statistics are all well-known and each of them was originally proposed because they should have high power against some alternative distributions. The tests considered are the Pearson probability product test, the Neyman smooth test, the Sukhatme test, the Durbin-Kolmogorov test, the Kuiper test, and the Sherman test. Results are given for each of these tests against each of four classes of alternatives. Also, the most powerful test against each member of the first three alternatives is obtained, and the powers of these tests are given for the same sample sizes as for the six general "omnibus" test statistics. These values constitute a "power envelope" against which all tests can be compared. The Neyman smooth tests with 2nd and 4th degree polynomials are found to have good power and are recommended as general tests for uniformity.  相似文献

In this article, we propose various tests for serial correlation in fixed-effects panel data regression models with a small number of time periods. First, a simplified version of the test suggested by Wooldridge (2002) and Drukker (2003) is considered. The second test is based on the Lagrange Multiplier (LM) statistic suggested by Baltagi and Li (1995), and the third test is a modification of the classical Durbin–Watson statistic. Under the null hypothesis of no serial correlation, all tests possess a standard normal limiting distribution as N tends to infinity and T is fixed. Analyzing the local power of the tests, we find that the LM statistic has superior power properties. Furthermore, a generalization to test for autocorrelation up to some given lag order and a test statistic that is robust against time dependent heteroskedasticity are proposed.  相似文献
