Let X has a p-dimensional normal distribution with mean vector θ and identity covariance matrix I. In a compound decision problem consisting of squared-error estimation of θ, Strawderman (1971) placed a Beta (α, 1) prior distribution on a normal class of priors to produce a family of Bayes minimax estimators. We propose an incomplete Gamma(α, β) prior distribution on the same normal class of priors to produce a larger family of Bayes minimax estimators. We present the results of a Monte Carlo study to demonstrate the reduced risk of our estimators in comparison with the Strawderman estimators when θ is away from the zero vector.  相似文献

A discrete uniform distribution is defined over the integers 1, 2, …, k. Following Tenenbein, who investigated the point estimation of k for a sample drawn without replacement, this paper considers a number of point estimators of k for sampling with replacement and presents conservative confidence sets for k for both methods of sampling.  相似文献

The two parametric distribution functions appearing in the extreme-value theory – the generalized extreme-value distribution and the generalized Pareto distribution – have log-concave densities if the extreme-value index γ∈[?1, 0]. Replacing the order statistics in tail-index estimators by their corresponding quantiles from the distribution function that is based on the estimated log-concave density ? f n leads to novel smooth quantile and tail-index estimators. These new estimators aim at estimating the tail index especially in small samples. Acting as a smoother of the empirical distribution function, the log-concave distribution function estimator reduces estimation variability to a much greater extent than it introduces bias. As a consequence, Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate that the smoothed version of the estimators are well superior to their non-smoothed counterparts, in terms of mean-squared error.  相似文献

The optimum quality that can be asymptotically achieved in the estimation of a probability p using inverse binomial sampling is addressed. A general definition of quality is used in terms of the risk associated with a loss function that satisfies certain assumptions. It is shown that the limit superior of the risk for p asymptotically small has a minimum over all (possibly randomized) estimators. This minimum is achieved by certain non-randomized estimators. The model includes commonly used quality criteria as particular cases. Applications to the non-asymptotic regime are discussed considering specific loss functions, for which minimax estimators are derived.  相似文献

We propose two density estimators of the survival distribution in the setting of the Koziol-Green random-censoring model. The estimators are obtained by maximum-penalized-likelihood methods, and we provide an algorithm for their numerical evaluation. We establish the strong consistency of the estimators in the Hellinger metric, the Lp-norms, p= 1,2, ∞, and a Sobolev norm, under mild conditions on the underlying survival density and the censoring distribution.  相似文献

This study proposes the estimators for the mean and its variance of the number of respondents who possessed a rare sensitive attribute based on stratified sampling schemes (stratified sampling and stratified double sampling). This study deals with the extension of the estimation reported in Land et al. [Estimation of a rare sensitive attribute using Poisson distribution, Statistics (2011), in press. DOI: 10.1080/02331888.2010.524300] using a Poisson distribution and an unrelated question randomized response model reported in Greenberg et al. [The unrelated question randomized response model: Theoretical framework, J. Amer. Statist. Assoc. 64 (1969), 520–539]. In the stratified sampling, the estimators are proposed when the parameter of the rare unrelated attribute is known and unknown. The variances of estimators using a proportional and optimum allocation are also suggested. The proposed estimators are evaluated using a relative efficiency comparing variances of the estimators reported in Land et al. depending on the parameters and the probability of selecting a question. We showed that our proposed methods have better efficiencies than Land et al.’s randomized response model in some conditions. When the sizes of stratified populations are not given, other estimators are suggested using a stratified double sampling. For the proportional allocation, the difference between two variances in the stratified sampling and the stratified double sampling is given with the known rare unrelated attribute.  相似文献

Expected shortfall (ES) is a well-known measure of extreme loss associated with a risky asset or portfolio. For any 0 < p < 1, the 100(1 ? p) percent ES is defined as the mean of the conditional loss distribution, given the event that the loss exceeds (1 ? p)th quantile of the marginal loss distribution. Estimation of ES based on asset return data is an important problem in finance. Several nonparametric estimators of the expected shortfall are available in the literature. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we compare the accuracy of these estimators under the condition that p → 0 as n → ∞ for several asset return time series models, where n is the sample size. Not much seems to be known regarding the properties of the ES estimators under this condition. For p close to zero, the ES measures an extreme loss in the right tail of the loss distribution of the asset or portfolio. Our simulations and real-data analysis provide insight into the effect of varying p with n on the performance of nonparametric ES estimators.  相似文献

This paper considers the design of accelerated life test (ALT) sampling plans under Type I progressive interval censoring with random removals. We assume that the lifetime of products follows a Weibull distribution. Two levels of constant stress higher than the use condition are used. The sample size and the acceptability constant that satisfy given levels of producer's risk and consumer's risk are found. In particular, the optimal stress level and the allocation proportion are obtained by minimizing the generalized asymptotic variance of the maximum likelihood estimators of the model parameters. Furthermore, for validation purposes, a Monte Carlo simulation is conducted to assess the true probability of acceptance for the derived sampling plans.  相似文献

Cordeiro and de Castro proposed a new family of generalized distributions based on the Kumaraswamy distribution (denoted as Kw-G). Nadarajah et al. showed that the density function of the new family of distributions can be expressed as a linear combination of the density of exponentiated family of distributions. They derived some properties of Kw-G distributions and discussed estimation of parameters using the maximum likelihood (ML) method. Cheng and Amin and Ranneby introduced a new method of estimating parameters based on Kullback–Leibler divergence (the maximum spacing (MSP) method). In this article, the estimates of parameters of Kw-G distributions are obtained using the MSP method. For some special Kw-G distributions, the new estimators are compared with ML estimators. It is shown by simulations and a real data application that MSP estimators have better properties than ML estimators.  相似文献

In this paper, the Bayes estimators for mean and square of mean ol a normal distribution with mean μ and vaiiance σ r2 (known), relative to LINEX loss function are obtained Comparisons in terms of risk functions and Bayes risks of those under LINEX loss and squared error loss functions with their respective alternative estimators viz, UMVUE and Bayes estimators relative to squared error loss function, are made. It is found that Bayes estimators relative to LINEX loss function dominate the alternative estimators m terms of risk function snd Bayes risk. It is also found that if t2 is unknown the Bayes estimators are still preferable over alternative estimators.  相似文献

This article deals with progressive first-failure censoring, which is a generalization of progressive censoring. We derive maximum likelihood estimators of the unknown parameters and reliability characteristics of generalized inverted exponential distribution using progressive first-failure censored samples. The asymptotic confidence intervals and coverage probabilities for the parameters are obtained based on the observed Fisher's information matrix. Bayes estimators of the parameters and reliability characteristics under squared error loss function are obtained using the Lindley approximation and importance sampling methods. Also, highest posterior density credible intervals for the parameters are computed using importance sampling procedure. A Monte Carlo simulation study is conducted to analyse the performance of the estimators derived in the article. A real data set is discussed for illustration purposes. Finally, an optimal censoring scheme has been suggested using different optimality criteria.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this article, we consider a sampling scheme in record-breaking data set-up, as record ranked set sampling. We compare the proposed sampling with the well-known sampling scheme in record values known as inverse sampling scheme when the underlying distribution follows the proportional hazard rate model. Various point estimators are obtained in each sampling schemes and compared with respect to mean squared error and Pitman measure of closeness criteria. It is observed in most of the situations that the new sampling scheme provides more efficient estimators than their counterparts. Finally, one data set has been analyzed for illustrative purposes.  相似文献

We consider maximum-likelihood estimators of the three parameters in the Weibull distribution. Motivated by an application regarding the determination of a lower percentile of the strength of dimension lumber, we investigate the sampling properties of these estimators. Consistency is established when the shape parameter is greater than one, including some nonregular cases encountered in fitting lumber data. The joint distribution of the estimators is studied by a Monte Carlo approach. The maximum-likelihood estimator of the 5th percentile is compared with the sample 5th percentile. For the cases considered it was generally found that with sample size 70 the usual asymptotic normality does not hold.  相似文献

In this article, new pseudo-Bayes and pseudo-empirical Bayes estimators for estimating the proportion of a potentially sensitive attribute in a survey sampling have been introduced. The proposed estimators are compared with the recent estimator proposed by Odumade and Singh [Efficient use of two decks of cards in randomized response sampling, Comm. Statist. Theory Methods 38 (2009), pp. 439–446] and Warner [Randomized response: A survey technique for eliminating evasive answer bias, J. Amer. Statist. Assoc. 60 (1965), pp. 63–69].  相似文献

Simultaneous estimation of scale parameters is considered in mixture distributions under squared-error loss. A general class of estimators is obtained which dominates the componentwise best multiple estimators and the moment estimators. As special cases, improved estimators are obtained for the multivariate t-distribution and the p-variate Lomax distribution.  相似文献

We consider the right truncated exponential distribution where the truncation point is unknown and show that the ML equation has a unique solution over an extended parameter space. In the case of the estimation of the truncation point T we show that the asymptotic distribution of the MLE is not centered at T. A modified MLE is introduced which outperforms all other considered estimators including the minimum variance unbiased estimator. Asymptotic as well as small sample properties of different estimators are investigated and compared. The truncated exponential distribution has an increasing failure rate, ideally suited for use as a survival distribution for biological and industrial data.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider paired survival data, in which pair members are subject to the same right censoring time, but they are dependent on each other. Assuming the Marshall–Olkin Multivariate Weibull distribution for the joint distribution of the lifetimes (X1, X2) and the censoring time X3, we derive the joint density of the actual observed data and obtain maximum likelihood estimators, Bayes estimators and posterior regret Gamma minimax estimators of the unknown parameters under squared error loss and weighted squared error loss functions. We compare the performances of the maximum likelihood estimators and Bayes estimators numerically in terms of biases and estimated Mean Squared Error Loss.  相似文献

The use of robust measures helps to increase the precision of the estimators, especially for the estimation of extremely skewed distributions. In this article, a generalized ratio estimator is proposed by using some robust measures with single auxiliary variable under the adaptive cluster sampling (ACS) design. We have incorporated tri-mean (TM), mid-range (MR) and Hodges-Lehman (HL) of the auxiliary variable as robust measures together with some conventional measures. The expressions of bias and mean square error (MSE) of the proposed generalized ratio estimator are derived. Two types of numerical study have been conducted using artificial clustered population and real data application to examine the performance of the proposed estimator over the usual mean per unit estimator under simple random sampling (SRS). Related results of the simulation study show that the proposed estimators provide better estimation results on both real and artificial population over the competing estimators.  相似文献

Ranked set sampling (RSS) is a sampling procedure that can be used to improve the cost efficiency of selecting sample units of an experiment or a study. In this paper, RSS is considered for estimating the location and scale parameters a and b>0, as well as the population mean from the family F((x?a)/b). Modified best linear unbiased estimators (BLUEs) and best linear invariant estimators (BLIEs) are considered. Numerical computations with different location-scale distributions and different sample sizes are conducted to assess the efficiency of the suggested estimators. It is found that the modified BLIEs are uniformly higher than that of BLUEs for all distributions considered in this study. The modified BLUE and BLIE are more efficient when the underlying distribution is symmetric.  相似文献

This article studies a bivariate geometric distribution (BGD) as a plausible reliability model. Maximum likelihood and Bayes estimators of parameters and various reliability characteristics are obtained. Approximations to the mean, variance, and Bayes risk of these estimators have been derived using Taylor's expansion. A Monte-Carlo simulation study has been performed to compare these estimators. At the end, the theory is illustrated with a real data set example of accidents.  相似文献
