In this paper we introduce a binary search algorithm that efficiently finds initial maximum likelihood estimates for sequential experiments where a binary response is modeled by a continuous factor. The problem is motivated by switching measurements on superconducting Josephson junctions. In this quantum mechanical experiment, the current is the factor controlled by the experimenter and a binary response indicating the presence or the absence of a voltage response is measured. The prior knowledge on the model parameters is typically poor, which may cause the common approaches of initial estimation to fail. The binary search algorithm is designed to work reliably even when the prior information is very poor. The properties of the algorithm are studied in simulations and an advantage over the initial estimation with equally spaced factor levels is demonstrated. We also study the cost-efficiency of the binary search algorithm and find the approximately optimal number of measurements per stage when there is a cost related to the number of stages in the experiment.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce a partially linear single-index additive hazards model with current status data. Both the unknown link function of the single-index term and the cumulative baseline hazard function are approximated by B-splines under a monotonicity constraint on the latter. The sieve method is applied to estimate the nonparametric and parametric components simultaneously. We show that, when the nonparametric link function is an exact B-spline, the resultant estimator of regression parameter vector is asymptotically normal and achieves the semiparametric information bound and the rate of convergence of the estimator for the cumulative baseline hazard function is optimal. Simulation studies are presented to examine the finite sample performance of the proposed estimation method. For illustration, we apply the method to a clinical dataset with current status outcome.  相似文献

Bayesian sequential and adaptive randomization designs are gaining popularity in clinical trials thanks to their potentials to reduce the number of required participants and save resources. We propose a Bayesian sequential design with adaptive randomization rates so as to more efficiently attribute newly recruited patients to different treatment arms. In this paper, we consider 2‐arm clinical trials. Patients are allocated to the 2 arms with a randomization rate to achieve minimum variance for the test statistic. Algorithms are presented to calculate the optimal randomization rate, critical values, and power for the proposed design. Sensitivity analysis is implemented to check the influence on design by changing the prior distributions. Simulation studies are applied to compare the proposed method and traditional methods in terms of power and actual sample sizes. Simulations show that, when total sample size is fixed, the proposed design can obtain greater power and/or cost smaller actual sample size than the traditional Bayesian sequential design. Finally, we apply the proposed method to a real data set and compare the results with the Bayesian sequential design without adaptive randomization in terms of sample sizes. The proposed method can further reduce required sample size.  相似文献

Any experiment in which one or more of the experimental units is used more than once is called a repeated measurements experiment. The associated design of a repeated measurements experiment is referred to as a repeated measurements design. This review covers some known results on repeated measurements designs. Emphasis is placed on the impact of optimal design theory. Some construction methods for these designs are presented. Hedayat and Afsarinejad (1975) has an extensive bibliography of earlier literature. A bibliography of these designs published after 1974 is provided at the end of this paper.  相似文献

The presence of block effects makes the optimal selection of fractional factorial designs a difficult task. The existing frequentist methods try to combine treatment and block wordlength patterns and apply minimum aberration criterion to find the optimal design. However, ambiguities exist in combining the two wordlength patterns and therefore, the optimality of such designs can be challenged. Here we propose a Bayesian approach to overcome this problem. The main technique is to postulate a model and a prior distribution to satisfy the common assumptions in blocking and then, to develop an optimal design criterion for the efficient estimation of treatment effects. We apply our method to develop regular, nonregular, and mixed-level blocked designs. Several examples are presented to illustrate the advantages of the proposed method.  相似文献

The underlying assumption for the design of control charts is the measurements within a sample are independently distributed. However, there are many situations where the uncorrelation assumption may be unacceptable in practice. In this paper, the economic design of cumulative sum (CUSUM) control chart for correlated data within a sample is developed. The genetic algorithm is applied to find the optimal design parameters of the CUSUM control chart by minimizing the cost function. An illustrative example is given. A sensitivity analysis is then conducted to evaluate the effects of cost parameters, process parameters, and correlation coefficient on the economic design.  相似文献

Generalized case–cohort designs have been proved to be a cost-effective way to enhance effectiveness in large epidemiological cohort. In generalized case–cohort design, we first select a subcohort from the underlying cohort by simple random sampling, and then sample a subset of the failures in the remaining subjects. In this article, we propose the inference procedure for the unknown regression parameters in the additive hazards model and develop an optimal sample size allocations to achieve maximum power at a given budget in generalized case–cohort design. The finite sample performance of the proposed method is evaluated through simulation studies. The proposed method is applied to a real data set from the National Wilm's Tumor Study Group.  相似文献

It is well known that it is difficult to obtain an accurate optimal design for a mixture experimental design with complex constraints. In this article, we construct a random search algorithm which can be used to find the optimal design for mixture model with complex constraints. First, we generate an initial set by the Monte-Carlo method, and then run the random search algorithm to get the optimal set of points. After that, we explain the effectiveness of this method by using two examples.  相似文献

The problem of estimating the intraclass correlation when the sampling design is unbalanced is discussed. The method of moments is used to derive an approximation to the distribution of the estimate of the intraclass correlation obtained by the variance components approach. The maximum likelihood estimator is also presented, along with a simple procedure due to Richard (1961), for numerically maximizing a likelihood function of several parameters. Finally, the issue of optimal study design is considered for both balanced and unbalanced situations. For given power we determine the number of sets required to detect different values of the intraclass correlation.  相似文献

本文的主要工作是从频域的角度对季节调整中“季节滤子”的设计及估计问题进行研究。通过将直接信号提取(DSEF)方法引入到季节调整的应用之中,突破现有季节调整方法中仅能处理季度或月度数据的限制,且该方法下季节调整后的序列是理论季节调整后序列的“均方误差”最小估计。将DSEF方法应用于对中国季度进出口总额序列的季节调整分析中。分析结果显示,相比于X-11和SEATS方法,DSEF方法季节调整结果的离差较小且稳健性较好。  相似文献

The estimation of the variance for the GREG (general regression) estimator by weighted residuals is widely accepted as a method which yields estimators with good conditional properties. Since the optimal (regression) estimator shares the properties of GREG estimators which are used in the construction of weighted variance estimators, we introduce the weighting procedure also for estimating the variance of the optimal estimator. This method of variance estimation was originally presented in a seemingly ad hoc manner, and we shall discuss it from a conditional point of view and also look at an alternative way of utilizing the weights. Examples that stress conditional behaviour of estimators are then given for elementary sampling designs such as simple random sampling, stratified simple random sampling and Poisson sampling, where for the latter design we have conducted a small simulation study.  相似文献

The phase II clinical trials often use the binary outcome. Thus, accessing the success rate of the treatment is a primary objective for the phase II clinical trials. Reporting confidence intervals is a common practice for clinical trials. Due to the group sequence design and relatively small sample size, many existing confidence intervals for phase II trials are much conservative. In this paper, we propose a class of confidence intervals for binary outcomes. We also provide a general theory to assess the coverage of confidence intervals for discrete distributions, and hence make recommendations for choosing the parameter in calculating the confidence interval. The proposed method is applied to Simon's [14] optimal two-stage design with numerical studies. The proposed method can be viewed as an alternative approach for the confidence interval for discrete distributions in general.  相似文献

We wish to model pulse wave velocity (PWV) as a function of longitudinal measurements of pulse pressure (PP) at the same and prior visits at which the PWV is measured. A number of approaches are compared. First, we use the PP at the same visit as the PWV in a linear regression model. In addition, we use the average of all available PPs as the explanatory variable in a linear regression model. Next, a two-stage process is applied. The longitudinal PP is modeled using a linear mixed-effects model. This modeled PP is used in the regression model to describe PWV. An approach for using the longitudinal PP data is to obtain a measure of the cumulative burden, the area under the PP curve. This area under the curve is used as an explanatory variable to model PWV. Finally, a joint Bayesian model is constructed similar to the two-stage model.  相似文献

There are many well-known methods applied in classification problem for linear data with both known and unknown distribution. Here, we deal with classification involving data on torus and cylinder. A new method involving a generalized likelihood ratio test is developed for classifying in two populations using directional data. The approach assumes that one of the probabilities of misclassification is known. The procedure is constructed by applying Gibbs sampler on the conditionally specified distribution. A parametric bootstrap approach is also presented. An application to data involving linear and circular measurements on human skull from two tribal populations is given.  相似文献

We consider in this article the problem of numerically approximating the quantiles of a sample statistic for a given population, a problem of interest in many applications, such as bootstrap confidence intervals. The proposed Monte Carlo method can be routinely applied to handle complex problems that lack analytical results. Furthermore, the method yields estimates of the quantiles of a sample statistic of any sample size though Monte Carlo simulations for only two optimally selected sample sizes are needed. An analysis of the Monte Carlo design is performed to obtain the optimal choices of these two sample sizes and the number of simulated samples required for each sample size. Theoretical results are presented for the bias and variance of the numerical method proposed. The results developed are illustrated via simulation studies for the classical problem of estimating a bivariate linear structural relationship. It is seen that the size of the simulated samples used in the Monte Carlo method does not have to be very large and the method provides a better approximation to quantiles than those based on an asymptotic normal theory for skewed sampling distributions.  相似文献

We find optimal designs for linear models using a novel algorithm that iteratively combines a semidefinite programming (SDP) approach with adaptive grid techniques. The proposed algorithm is also adapted to find locally optimal designs for nonlinear models. The search space is first discretized, and SDP is applied to find the optimal design based on the initial grid. The points in the next grid set are points that maximize the dispersion function of the SDP-generated optimal design using nonlinear programming. The procedure is repeated until a user-specified stopping rule is reached. The proposed algorithm is broadly applicable, and we demonstrate its flexibility using (i) models with one or more variables and (ii) differentiable design criteria, such as A-, D-optimality, and non-differentiable criterion like E-optimality, including the mathematically more challenging case when the minimum eigenvalue of the information matrix of the optimal design has geometric multiplicity larger than 1. Our algorithm is computationally efficient because it is based on mathematical programming tools and so optimality is assured at each stage; it also exploits the convexity of the problems whenever possible. Using several linear and nonlinear models with one or more factors, we show the proposed algorithm can efficiently find optimal designs.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a new method for determining optimal designs for enzyme inhibition kinetic models, which are used to model the influence of the concentration of a substrate and an inhibition on the velocity of a reaction. The approach uses a nonlinear transformation of the vector of predictors such that the model in the new coordinates is given by an incomplete response surface model. Although there exist no explicit solutions of the optimal design problem for incomplete response surface models so far, the corresponding design problem in the new coordinates is substantially more transparent, such that explicit or numerical solutions can be determined more easily. The designs for the original problem can finally be found by an inverse transformation of the optimal designs determined for the response surface model. We illustrate the method determining explicit solutions for the D-optimal design and for the optimal design problem for estimating the individual coefficients in a non-competitive enzyme inhibition kinetic model.  相似文献

Optimal designs are presented for experiments in which sampling is carried out in stages. There are two Bernoulli populations and it is assumed that the outcomes of the previous stage are available before the sampling design for the next stage is determined. At each stage, the design specifies the number of observations to be taken and the relative proportion to be sampled from each population. Of particular interest are 2- and 3-stage designs.To illustrate that the designs can be used for experiments of useful sample sizes, they are applied to estimation and optimization problems. Results indicate that, for problems of moderate size, published asymptotic analyses do not always represent the true behavior of the optimal stage sizes, and efficiency may be lost if the analytical results are used instead of the true optimal allocation.The exactly optimal few stage designs discussed here are generated computationally, and the examples presented indicate the ease with which this approach can be used to solve problems that present analytical difficulties. The algorithms described are flexible and provide for the accurate representation of important characteristics of the problem.  相似文献

In this paper the economic design of Cumulative Count of Conforming (CCC) control charts to maintain the current control of fraction nonconforming of a process is studied. CCC chart is an attribute chart for monitoring high quality processes by plotting the cumulative count of conforming items between two nonconforming ones on a suitable chart. A process model is proposed to obtain an appropriate loss function. An alogorithm to search for the optimal setting of the sampling and control parameters is derived. Numerical illustrations of the method and some properties of the optimal economic design are provided.  相似文献
