Abstract. Frailty models with a non‐parametric baseline hazard are widely used for the analysis of survival data. However, their maximum likelihood estimators can be substantially biased in finite samples, because the number of nuisance parameters associated with the baseline hazard increases with the sample size. The penalized partial likelihood based on a first‐order Laplace approximation still has non‐negligible bias. However, the second‐order Laplace approximation to a modified marginal likelihood for a bias reduction is infeasible because of the presence of too many complicated terms. In this article, we find adequate modifications of these likelihood‐based methods by using the hierarchical likelihood.  相似文献

Distributions whose extremity values of the support depend on unknown pa¬rameters are usually known as nonregular distributions. In most cases, the MLEs for these parameters cannot be obtained by differentiation. Familiar examples are the uniform distribution on the interval (0,0) and the truncated exponential distribution with truncation parameter 0. However, there exist distributions whose extremity points of the support depend on unknown pa¬rameters, which nevertheless are regular in the sense that the MLEs can be obtained by differentiation. This note provides a method of constructing such nonregular distributions with regular MLEs.  相似文献

It is very well known that analyses for missing data depend on untestable assumptions. As a consequence, in such settings, sensitivity analyses are often sensible. One such class of analyses assesses the dependence of conclusions on an explicit missing value mechanism. Inevitably, there is an association between such dependence and the actual (but unknown) distribution of the missing data. In a particular parametric framework for dropout in this paper, an approach is presented that reduces (but never removes) the impact of incorrect assumptions on the form of the association. It is shown how these models can be formulated and fitted relatively simply using hierarchical likelihood. These are applied directly to an example involving mastitis in dairy cattle, and an extensive simulation study is described to show the properties of the methods.  相似文献

Based on a Type 2 censored sample, we use the likelihood-based approach to draw likelihood inference on the shape parameter gamma of a two-parameter Weibull distribution. In particular, we derive the profile, conditional and marginal likelihoods of gamma. Numerical results along with some concluding remarks regarding the use of likelihood-based methods for inference are provided.  相似文献

Effective implementation of likelihood inference in models for high‐dimensional data often requires a simplified treatment of nuisance parameters, with these having to be replaced by handy estimates. In addition, the likelihood function may have been simplified by means of a partial specification of the model, as is the case when composite likelihood is used. In such circumstances tests and confidence regions for the parameter of interest may be constructed using Wald type and score type statistics, defined so as to account for nuisance parameter estimation or partial specification of the likelihood. In this paper a general analytical expression for the required asymptotic covariance matrices is derived, and suggestions for obtaining Monte Carlo approximations are presented. The same matrices are involved in a rescaling adjustment of the log likelihood ratio type statistic that we propose. This adjustment restores the usual chi‐squared asymptotic distribution, which is generally invalid after the simplifications considered. The practical implication is that, for a wide variety of likelihoods and nuisance parameter estimates, confidence regions for the parameters of interest are readily computable from the rescaled log likelihood ratio type statistic as well as from the Wald type and score type statistics. Two examples, a measurement error model with full likelihood and a spatial correlation model with pairwise likelihood, illustrate and compare the procedures. Wald type and score type statistics may give rise to confidence regions with unsatisfactory shape in small and moderate samples. In addition to having satisfactory shape, regions based on the rescaled log likelihood ratio type statistic show empirical coverage in reasonable agreement with nominal confidence levels.  相似文献

It is well known that the normal mixture with unequal variance has unbounded likelihood and thus the corresponding global maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) is undefined. One of the commonly used solutions is to put a constraint on the parameter space so that the likelihood is bounded and then one can run the EM algorithm on this constrained parameter space to find the constrained global MLE. However, choosing the constraint parameter is a difficult issue and in many cases different choices may give different constrained global MLE. In this article, we propose a profile log likelihood method and a graphical way to find the maximum interior mode. Based on our proposed method, we can also see how the constraint parameter, used in the constrained EM algorithm, affects the constrained global MLE. Using two simulation examples and a real data application, we demonstrate the success of our new method in solving the unboundness of the mixture likelihood and locating the maximum interior mode.  相似文献

For the regression parameter β in the Cox model, there have been several estimates based on different types of approximated likelihood. For right-censored data, Ren and Zhou [Full likelihood inferences in the Cox model: an empirical approach. Ann Inst Statist Math. 2011;63:1005–1018] derive the full likelihood function for (β, F0), where F0 is the baseline distribution function in the Cox model. In this article, we extend their results to left-truncated and right-censored data with discrete covariates. Using the empirical likelihood parameterization, we obtain the full-profile likelihood function for β when covariates are discrete. Simulation results indicate that the maximum likelihood estimator outperforms Cox's partial likelihood estimator in finite samples.  相似文献

Abstract. This paper deals with the issue of performing a default Bayesian analysis on the shape parameter of the skew‐normal distribution. Our approach is based on a suitable pseudo‐likelihood function and a matching prior distribution for this parameter, when location (or regression) and scale parameters are unknown. This approach is important for both theoretical and practical reasons. From a theoretical perspective, it is shown that the proposed matching prior is proper thus inducing a proper posterior distribution for the shape parameter, also when the likelihood is monotone. From the practical perspective, the proposed approach has the advantages of avoiding the elicitation on the nuisance parameters and the computation of multidimensional integrals.  相似文献

The marginal likelihood function of the common mean of two normal populations is considered. Transformed versions of the marginal likelihood function are plotted to illustrate the difficulties of the point estimate approach. Conditions for bimodality and asymmetry are also discussed  相似文献

Several adjustments of the profile likelihood have the common effect of reducing the bias of the associated score function. Hence expansions for the adjusted score functions differ by a term, Dξ, that has small asymptotic order (n ). The effect of Dξ on other quantities of interest is studied. In particular, we find the bias and variance of the adjusted maximum-likelihood estimate to be relatively unaffected, while differences in the Bartlett correction depend on Dξ in a simple way.  相似文献

One of the common problems encountered in applied statistics is that of comparing two proportions from stratified samples. One approach to this problem is via inference on the corresponding odds ratio. In this paper, the various point and interval estimators of and hypothesis testing procedures for a common odds ratio from multiple 2 ×2 tables are reviewed. Based On research to date, the conditional maximum likelihood and Mantel-Haenszel estimators are recommended as the point estimators of choice. Neither confidence intervals nor hypothesis testing metthods have been studied as well as the point estimators, but there is a confidence interval method associated with the Mantel-Haenszel estimator that is a good choice.  相似文献

The likelihood function from a large sample is commonly assumed to be approximately a normal density function. The literature supports, under mild conditions, an approximate normal shape about the maximum; but typically a stronger result is needed: that the normalized likelihood itself is approximately a normal density. In a transformation-parameter context, we consider the likelihood normalized relative to right-invariant measure, and in the location case under moderate conditions show that the standardized version converges almost surely to the standard normal. Also in a transformation-parameter context, we show that almost sure convergence of the normalized and standardized likelihood to a standard normal implies that the standardized distribution for conditional inference converges almost surely to a corresponding standard normal. This latter result is of immediate use for a range of estimating, testing, and confidence procedures on a conditional-inference basis.  相似文献

The popular empirical likelihood method not only has a convenient chi-square limiting distribution but is also Bartlett correctable, leading to a high-order coverage precision of the resulting confidence regions. Meanwhile, it is one of many nonparametric likelihoods in the Cressie–Read power divergence family. The other likelihoods share many attractive properties but are not Bartlett correctable. In this paper, we develop a new technique to achieve the effect of being Bartlett correctable. Our technique is generally applicable to pivotal quantities with chi-square limiting distributions. Numerical experiments and an example reveal that the method is successful for several important nonparametric likelihoods.  相似文献

In longitudinal studies, robust sandwich variance estimators are often used, and are especially useful when model assumptions are in doubt. However, the usual sandwich estimator does not allow for models with crossed random effects. The hierarchical likelihood extends the idea of the sandwich estimator to models not currently covered. By simulation studies, we show that the new sandwich estimator is robust against heteroscedastic errors and against misspecification of overdispersion in the y | v component.  相似文献

The investigation of multi-parameter likelihood functions is simplified if the log likelihood is quadratic near the maximum, as then normal approximations to the likelihood can be accurately used to obtain quantities such as likelihood regions. This paper proposes that data-based transformations of the parameters can be employed to make the log likelihood more quadratic, and illustrates the method with one of the simplest bivariate likelihoods, the normal two-parameter likelihood.  相似文献

In this study, adjustment of profile likelihood function of parameter of interest in presence of many nuisance parameters is investigated for survival regression models. Our objective is to extend the Barndorff–Nielsen’s technique to Weibull regression models for estimation of shape parameter in presence of many nuisance and regression parameters. We conducted Monte-Carlo simulation studies and a real data analysis, all of which demonstrate and suggest that the modified profile likelihood estimators outperform the profile likelihood estimators in terms of three comparison criterion: mean squared errors, bias and standard errors.  相似文献

It is well-known that the nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator (NPMLE) of a survival function may severely underestimate the survival probabilities at very early times for left truncated data. This problem might be overcome by instead computing a smoothed nonparametric estimator (SNE) via the EMS algorithm. The close connection between the SNE and the maximum penalized likelihood estimator is also established. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate the superior performance of the SNE over that of the NPMLE, in terms of either bias or variance, even for moderately large Samples. The methodology is illustrated with an application to the Massachusetts Health Care Panel Study dataset to estimate the probability of being functionally independent for non-poor male and female groups rcspectively.  相似文献

Recently, Bolfarine et al. [Bimodal symmetric-asymmetric power-normal families. Commun Statist Theory Methods. Forthcoming. doi:10.1080/03610926.2013.765475] introduced a bimodal asymmetric model having the normal and skew normal as special cases. Here, we prove a stochastic representation for their bimodal asymmetric model and use it to generate random numbers from that model. It is shown how the resulting algorithm can be seen as an improvement over the rejection method. We also discuss practical and numerical aspects regarding the estimation of the model parameters by maximum likelihood under simple random sampling. We show that a unique stationary point of the likelihood equations exists except when all observations have the same sign. However, the location-scale extension of the model usually presents two or more roots and this fact is illustrated here. The standard maximization routines available in the R system (Broyden–Fletcher–Goldfarb–Shanno (BFGS), Trust, Nelder–Mead) were considered in our implementations but exhibited similar performance. We show the usefulness of inspecting profile loglikelihoods as a method to obtain starting values for maximization and illustrate data analysis with the location-scale model in the presence of multiple roots. A simple Bayesian model is discussed in the context of a data set which presents a flat likelihood in the direction of the skewness parameter.  相似文献
