This article presents some findings of a five year study of the neighborhood stabilization movement since 1956 in 15 urban communities across the U.S. This movement, an outgrowth of the civil rights movement, is the organized effort to maintain racial diversity in U.S. urban neighborhoods. Based on field research, historical review, and census data, the study offers three analytical models representing success, failure, and conditional efforts in this movement. Internal and external factors of success and failure are discussed and nine inductive hypotheses serve as speculative conclusions about the probability of success in maintaining neighborhood diversity.  相似文献

Recognizing that mothers continue to bear the primary responsibility for household production, comprehensive logit models are developed to predict employment for low-income mothers. The models include a wide array of possible employment impediments, including individual, family environment, and community variables. Lack of family resource management, a variable not previously investigated in employment prediction, is found to be a significant impediment to employment. Under welfare reform, low-income mothers must balance family and work demands under severe resource constraints. Family resource management appears to play a crucial role in this balancing process. In addition, the local unemployment rate is found to be a significant predictor of employment.  相似文献

This article reports on a multi-method evaluation of a national arts program conducted over 3 years in five sites across Canada. Statistical analysis involve growth curve modeling of five waves of data and interviews with participating youth and parents. The results indicate that high-quality arts programs have a significant effect on children’s in-program behavior and emotional problems. The findings from the qualitative interviews suggest that active recruitment, removing barriers to participation, and high parental involvement enhanced youth engagement. Perceived youth gains included increased confidence, enhanced art skills, improved prosocial skills, and improved conflict resolution skills.  相似文献

Using person‐environment fit theory, this article formulates a conceptual model that links work, family, and boundary‐spanning demands and resources to work and family role performance and quality. Linking mechanisms include 2 dimensions of perceived work‐family fit (work demands–family resources fit and family demands–work resources fit) and a global assessment of perceived work‐family balance. Work, family, and boundary‐spanning demands and resources are associated with the 2 dimensions of fit, which combine with boundary‐spanning strategies to influence work‐family balance, which in turn affects role performance and quality. The model provides a framework for clarifying and integrating previous conceptualizations, measures, and empirical research regarding perceived work‐family fit and balance as linkages between the work‐family interface and outcomes. The Family Support Center, recognizing the need for single women with children to maintain stability, has developed a program referred to as the Family Support Center Village, which incorporates a service enriched co-housing model. Low- and moderate-income Hispanics in the United States have traditionally experienced few institutional incentives for savings and asset development and have instead encountered many disincentives. The authors provide a brief review of the various enticements and deterrents for savings and wealth development for traditionally underrepresented groups, with a focus on Hispanics. One of the most recent savings initiatives for low- and moderate-income individuals involves dedicated savings accounts, also known as Individual Development Accounts (IDAs). This study was designed to examine whether IDA program completion supports asset development over time for Hispanics. Results indicate that while there are no statistically significant differences in asset growth between IDA completers and non-completers, IDA program completers did experience more growth on all asset measures. The authors provide suggestions on how to close the racial and ethnic wealth gap for low- and moderate-income Hispanic individuals and households.  相似文献

This study examined the contributions of maternal labor force participation and marital status on economic self-sufficiency over time for rural mothers. Data were from 174 rural families participating in three waves of data collection in Rural Families Speak. χ 2 and multiple logistic regression were utilized. Results revealed only one-third of mothers moved toward economic self-sufficiency over three years. Maternal education, employment status, and weekly work hours were associated with improved economic well-being. Compared to single-parent families, unmarried-couple and married-couple families had increased odds of improving economically. In an analysis of all mothers with partners, married or unmarried, martial status was not significant in economic improvement. Findings suggest the role of marriage in welfare reform for rural families should be reconsidered.

I interviewed 57 low-income fathers about how they define responsible fatherhood. Unlike findings from previous research, their definition did not include financial provision or daily caregiving. Instead, their definition included six dimensions, some of which resemble a “Big Brother”: spending time in non-caregiving activities; avoiding harm by voluntarily distancing from the child when it is in the child’s best interest; acknowledging paternity in non-legal forums; spending money on gifts, joint activities, and special needs; monitoring the child’s home for trouble; and minimizing absences in the child’s life. Because these fathers do not emphasize traditional breadwinning or primary caregiving, their responsible fathering beliefs and behavior may be unappreciated by academics, practitioners, and policy makers.  相似文献

In the wake of the recent economic challenges, it is clear that social workers must be educated about the financial opportunities for low-income households. Encouraging low-income households to have a bank account at an insured depository institution, or become banked, is increasingly emphasized in policy and practice. Becoming banked offers the opportunity to avoid high-cost alternative financial services. Social workers can facilitate relationships between low-income households and the mainstream financial services industry to help families advance their long-term financial interest. Understanding the structure of all types of banks and credit unions is imperative. Implications for social work practice are explored.  相似文献

Cette recherche présente les résultats d'une étude de 21 mères qui travaillent de la classe moyenne et soutient qu'elles ont été incapables de challenger l'organisation punitive du travail et de la maternité. Ces mères utilisent la métaphore de l’“équilibre” pour décrire comment elles gèrent la tension. Cependant, leurs récits des difficultés de gérer la maternité lorsque les méres travaillent décrit une autre histoire. En fait, l’“équilibre” est une idéologie qui fonctionne afin d'obscurcir la contradiction entre le travail et la maternité. Combining paid work and motherhood is difficult because social institutions are still based on the assumption that these are mutually exclusive. Working mothers manage the tension between work and motherhood daily, and as they do, they establish new social patterns. This paper reports on the findings of a study of 21 middle‐class working mothers and argues that they have been unable to challenge the punitive organization of work and motherhood. These mothers use the metaphor of “balance” to describe how they manage the tension. However, their narratives of the difficulties of managing working motherhood tell a different story. In fact, “balance” is an ideology, which functions to obscure the contradiction between work and motherhood.  相似文献

The literature surrounding fragile families, low-income, unwed couples that are expecting a baby or that are new parents, is quickly expanding as there is a growing interest in understanding demographics, barriers to marriage, desire to marry, and patterns of relationships. This is due in large part to the federal government's healthy marriage initiative, which provided millions of dollars nationwide in demonstration grants designed to improve relationships among fragile families. In the midst of the expansion of literature, however, there is a deficit of deep, qualitative understanding of the experiences, beliefs, and attitudes of fragile families regarding relationship formation and marriage. Therefore, this article describes a phenomenological study that explores the lived experience of fragile families.  相似文献

Little is known about the influence of relationship characteristics on a woman's desire for a baby with her partner. This study addresses that gap, using data from a study of 1,114 low-income women in the southeast who were in a relationship. Controlling for sociodemographic factors, women who were in more established relationships, who had not had a previous child with their partner, or who had higher expectations of their partner were generally more likely to want a baby with him. In investigating women's childbearing desires, it is important to consider not only individual characteristics but also women's relationship characteristics.  相似文献

Using data from an experimental housing relocation program, this research compares social connections of children in families that move with those of similar children who do not move. Qualitative interview data are used to examine what factors influence the formation of social connections after moving. Results show the impact of moving on children's social connections is influenced by neighborhood context, financial resources, and children's age at the time of the move. Studies of moving during childhood need to pay closer attention to the factors that influence where, when, and why families move.  相似文献
