Measuring outcomes for children late placed for adoption

Selecting appropriate measures to assess the outcomes of permanent placement across a broad range of developmental dimensions is problematic. The Maudsley team are adapting and developing a package of instruments designed to identify the key influences on developmental recovery for a longitudinal sample of children late placed for adoption.     

NASADAD calls for nominations for annual SSA award

The National Association of State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Directors (NASADAD) is requesting nominations for the annual Ramstad/Kennedy Award, presented to a single state agency (SSA) — the state director who is responsible for the Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment block grant (and STR and SOR grants, now).     

Conceptual Framework for Marriage Education Programs for Stepfamily Couples with Considerations for Socioeconomic Context

Stepfamily couples face unique challenges that put them at higher risk for dissolution than non-stepfamily couples. Risks for stepfamily couples are magnified in the context of lower economic resources, making low-income stepfamily couples a key target population for intervention and for community education programs. Existing programs and services for couples often do not address the unique situations of stepfamilies. This article builds on previous reviews that have offered information on important research themes and assessment of available curricula for stepfamily couples and presents a more comprehensive conceptual model to guide program design and services for stepfamily couples inclusive of specific objectives, as well as conditions and antecedents affecting content and prioritized needs. The goal is to enhance efforts to strengthen more vulnerable couples in complex families.     

The hunt for a cure for Parkinson's disease

Several exciting new scientific advances have been made in the past decade toward both understanding the causes of and finding a cure for Parkinson's disease. Heartened by an acceleration in research findings in the past several years, the government has recently called for an infusion of funds from both the National Institutes of Health and private foundations into this burgeoning area of biomedical research. Most currently available conventional treatments for the disease only temporarily delay symptom presentation while doing nothing to halt disease progression. However, the rapidly accelerating pace of research in this field has left researchers hopeful that Parkinson's will be the first major age-related neurodegenerative disease for which we have a viable cure. In this article, advances in various areas of Parkinson's disease research are reviewed.     

Body dimension measurements for pillow design for Taiwanese

Study reported a pillow with a uniform height was not suitable for sleeping in supine and lateral positions. The study aims to determine the pillow dimensions for fitting supine and lateral positions for Taiwanese. Ten females and ten males subjects with a mean age of 21.9 years (SD= 1.07 years) participated in the study. Body dimensions of head, neck and shoulder in crown and sagittal planes were measured with the Martins' anthropometer and a curve measurer to determine the pillow's sizes. The results showed that the basic form of pillow for both genders is a U form from the front view. The middle area of the pillow is for supine position and the both side areas are for lateral positions. The base of pillow is a rectangle from the top view. The pillow is designed with a width of 75 and 70 cm for male and female, and a depth of 40 and 35 cm for male and female. The height in middle area and both side are 4 and 14 cm for male, and 2 and 12 cm for female. A neck rest with a height of 1.5 cm was proposed for neck support.     

Preference for realistic art predicts support for Brexit

Following the UK’s EU referendum in June 2016, there has been considerable interest from scholars in understanding the characteristics that differentiate Leave supporters from Remain supporters. Since Leave supporters score higher on conscientiousness but lower on neuroticism and openness, and given their general proclivity toward conservatism, we hypothesized that preference for realistic art would predict support for Brexit. Data on a large nationally representative sample of the British population were obtained, and preference for realistic art was measured using a four‐item binary choice test. Controlling for a range of personal characteristics, we found that respondents who preferred all four realistic paintings were 15–20 percentage points more likely to support Leave than those who preferred zero or one realistic paintings. This effect was comparable to the difference in support between those with a degree and those with no education, and was robust to controlling for the respondent’s party identity.     

Groundwork for community-based conservation: Strategies for social research

Diane Russell and Camilla Harshbarger have tried to understandthe constraints and opportunities for local partners in conservation.They see this as the first step for social actors and conservationistswho want to understand and work with institutions that are significantfor local people. They have prepared this book based on theirhard-won field experiences in rural regions of the tropics.They have also read case studies from across the globe, as wellas sharing in dialogue with local partners living at conservationsites, colleagues from universities, associations, and institutions,as well as with working groups. Struggle for Transdisciplinary Moments: Building Partnerships for Resettlement

The effects of climate change are both acute and chronic, leaving many communities in a perpetual state of uncertainty. For others, there is no such uncertainty—their communities will soon be uninhabitable. Some levels of government have begun to recognize and slowly respond to communities facing the possibilities of relocation. This paper considers the impact of transdisciplinary thinking and collaborative moments in the planning phase of one of the few community-scale managed retreat attempts in the United States. In January 2016, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded the state of Louisiana $48.3 million to plan, design, and implement a structured and scalable resettlement with former and current residents of Isle de Jean Charles. The paper uses data from surveys and interviews with the practitioner team, fieldnotes, review of published reports, and a sample of more than 400 media accounts. Our analysis highlights how developing a transdisciplinary process may render a new understanding to the tasks and meanings of planning resettlements in the future.
