The effect of immigration on the labor market performance of native-born workers: some evidence for Spain 总被引:3,自引:2,他引:1

This paper provides an approximation to the labor market effects of immigrants in Spain, a country where labor market institutions
and immigration policy exhibit some peculiarities, during the second half of the 1990s, the period in which immigration flows
accelerated. By using alternative data sets, we estimate both the impact of legal and total immigration flows on the employment
rates and wages of native workers, accounting for the possible occupational and geographical mobility of immigrants and native-born
workers. Using different samples and estimation procedures, we have not found a significant negative effect of immigration
on either the employment rates or wages of native workers.

The present paper introduces a new indicator of educational inequality, the grade distribution ratio (GDR), focusing on levels
of grade repetition and drop out rates in primary and secondary education. The indicator is specifically suitable to evaluate
the distributive implications of expanding educational systems in developing countries. A comparative analysis of grade enrollment
distributions across 92 developing countries from 1960 to 2005 reveals that the decline in educational inequality has been
substantial and wide spread since 1960, but that progress has slowed down in the last two decades. Latin American countries
were characterized by very large initial levels of educational inequality, but contrary to other developing regions continued
to equalize their grade enrollment distribution in the last two decades.

Nowadays, with an increasingly aging population, an increasing proportion of the population on disability benefits, and an
implicitly lower level of economic output and foregone tax revenue, disability has become a major public policy issue in many
countries. Estimating both single risk and competing risks models on a Swedish longitudinal database, this study analyzes
the risk of exit from the labor market due to disability at a certain age, conditional on having remained in the labor force
until that age. The explanatory variables did not have identical coefficients across destination types. For example, the estimated
single risk model shows that a higher level of education decreased the hazard of exiting the labor market with a disability
pension, while the estimated competing risks model suggests that a higher level of education increased the hazard of exiting
with a partial disability pension, but it decreased the hazard of exiting with a full disability pension.

Earnings mobility among Italian low-paid workers 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper uses Italian panel data to analyse low pay transitions since the early 1990s. Results indicate that having more
human capital reduces the probability of falling into low pay, but there is little impact on raising exit rates from low pay.
Human capital effects are found to be larger for women than for men. There is considerable state dependence: the experience
of low pay raises the probability of subsequent low pay episodes. Also, there is substantial unobserved heterogeneity associated
with factors such as initial conditions, mobility out of the earnings distribution and educational attainment.

Existing theoretical literature fails to explain satisfactorily the differences between the pay of workers who are covered
by collective agreements and others who are not. This study aims at providing a model framework that is amenable to an analysis
of this issue. Our general-equilibrium approach integrates a dual labor market and a two-sector product market. The results
suggest that the so-called “union wage gap” is largely determined by the degree of centralization of the bargains and, to
a somewhat lesser extent, by the expenditure share of the unionized sector's goods.

It has been claimed that women experience fewer career opportunities than men do mainly because they are over-represented
in ‘Dead-end Jobs’ (DEJs). Using Swedish panel data covering 1.1 million employees with the same employer in 1999 and 2003,
measures of DEJ are empirically derived from analyses of wage mobility. The results indicate that women are over-represented
in DEJs, especially in the public sector. The findings are interesting from (a) a methodological viewpoint, as it is indicated
that the career opportunities associated with occupations can be indicated using one measure for both men and women, (b) the
glass ceiling perspective, which arguably under-emphasizes gender inequality in relation to low positions, and (c) a class
perspective, which basically ignores gender and sector in explaining career chances.

Labor market institutions and demographic employment patterns 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0

We study collective bargaining’s effect on relative employment for youth, women, and older individuals. Our model of collective
wage setting predicts that unionization reduces employment more for groups with relatively elastic labor supply: youth, older
individuals, and women. We test this implication using data from 17 Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development
(OECD) countries over the 1960–1996 period. We find that time-varying indicators of unionization decrease the employment–population
ratio of young and older individuals relative to the prime-aged, and of prime-aged women relative to prime-aged men, and unionization
raises the unemployment rate of prime-aged women and, possibly, young men compared to prime-aged men.

We explore the labor market returns to the General Education Development (GED) exam for US natives and the foreign-born. We find that foreign-born men with a GED who received all of their formal schooling abroad earn significantly more than either foreign-schooled high school dropouts or graduates. In contrast, among US natives, GED recipients earn less than high school graduates but significantly more than dropouts. The returns for natives become larger over the life cycle and are not due to cohort effects. Our findings indicate that the GED may be more valuable in the labor market than some previous research suggests.

This study explores the effects of educational attainment on the transition to first marriage across successive generations
of women in Ghana. Considering the significant improvements in women educational attainment and career opportunities in recent
decades, the paper questions the tacit assumption of prior research on the time-invariant effect of women’s educational attainment
on marriage timing. Using discrete time frailty models with pooled data from the 1988, 1993, 1998 and 2003 Ghana Demographic
and Health Survey, women with higher educational attainment were found to have longer transition to first marriage than their
less educated counterparts. More importantly, the effect of higher education on the transition to first marriage was larger
among younger women even after controlling for other factors. The stronger effect among contemporary women has been discussed
in relation to ideational changes on family formation and the enhanced career opportunities for contemporary educated women.

This paper estimates the impact of a recent expansion in Canadian paid family leave from 25 to 50 weeks on maternal employment
and transfer income. It finds the expansion coincided with increases in transfers to mothers of children age zero to one relative
to mothers of children age three to four, and with decreases in returns to work in the year after birth. These changes were
concentrated among economically advantaged groups of women, defined by marital status, education, and non-wage income. Despite
these changes, there was no evidence of a decrease in returns to work or relative employment for mothers of children age one.

We estimate models of employment an earnings for a sample of white and non-white male immigrants drawn from the Labour Force
Survey between 1993 and 2004. Immigrants who arrived to enter the labour market (labour market entrants) are distinguished
from those who arrived to complete their education (education entrants). Diverse patterns of labour market assimilation are
found depending on ethnicity and immigrant type. Amongst labour market entrants, whites do better than non-whites, whilst
amongst education entrants, highly qualified prime-age non-whites perform as well as their white counterparts. Relative to
white natives, labour market outcomes for all immigrant groups have a tendency to decline with age.

Evidence on the extent of low enrolment and late entry for a sample of rural households in Ethiopia is provided, and two potential
sources of education externality benefits for school-age children, parental and neighbourhood education, are examined. The
education of parents, most significantly mothers, is found to contribute to children's schooling, as does the education of
neighbourhood women. The mechanisms by which such externalities may operate are considered by examining the effects of cognitive
and non-cognitive outputs of schooling upon current school enrolment of children. Findings illustrate both the importance
of girls' schooling and some challenges for education policy.

The cohort is a key concept in the study of social demography and social change. The enduring influence of cohort membership
can arise from history-based and/or size-based effects. The most prominent proponent of size-based cohort effects is Easterlin
(Birth and fortune: The impact of numbers on personal welfare, 1980) who argues that individuals hailing from unusually large cohorts will experience adverse labor market conditions relative
to the members of the smaller cohorts that bracket them. Drawing on data from the March Current Population Survey for the
period spanning 1974–2004, we examine the influence of relative cohort size on underemployment. The results provide modest
support for the Easterlin thesis, showing the odds of underemployment to be greatest among members of relatively large cohorts,
net of other significant predictors. The results also show that the impact of relative cohort size differs by educational
level, suggesting that adverse economic conditions produced by large cohort size can be offset by broader changes in the labor
market and other social institutions.

This paper reviews changes in homogamy by migration status and educational level in Monterrey, Mexico, through the analysis
of marriage patterns for two cohorts of men born in 1905–1934 and 1940–1969. Results show a significant increase in educational
homogamy, as well as in homogamy by rural origins. The changes suggest that education has played an increasingly important
role in the process of mate selection, although certain particularistic characteristics, such as being a rural immigrant,
are still important in marriage formation. The paper concludes with a discussion of the implications of these findings for
the relationship between homogamy and social stratification.

The changing nature of wage inequality 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Thomas Lemieux 《Journal of population economics》2008,21(1):21-48
The paper reviews recent developments in the literature on wage inequality with a particular focus on why inequality growth
has been particularly concentrated in the top end of the wage distribution over the last 15 years. Several possible institutional
and demand-side explanations are discussed for the secular growth in wage inequality in the United States and other advanced
industrialized countries.

Labor Migration has long been viewed as a strategy adopted by the household unit to allocate family resources rationally to
increase the flows of income and to raise family standard of living. The research reported here examines the extent to which
remittances sent by Filipino overseas workers increase the income and standard of living of households in the Philippines.
Data for the analysis were obtained from a representative sample of 2,388 households drawn in 1999–2000 from four major “labor
sending” areas in the Philippines. The analysis compares households with and without overseas workers to estimate the contribution
of remittances to household income and to household standard of living (measured once by an ‘objective’ indicator and once
by a ‘subjective’ assessment). The data reveal that due to remittances the income of households with overseas labor migrants
is considerably higher than the income of households without overseas workers. The data also reveal that remittances are used
mostly for consumption purposes (e.g. purchase of food, clothing, education, and goods) and that most of the difference in
standard of living (whether measured on the ‘objective’ or the ‘subjective’ scale) between households with and without overseas
workers are attributed to remittances. The implications of labor migration and the policy that encourages and supports labor
migration for the Filipino society are evaluated and discussed.

In developed countries, immigrants are more likely to be nonemployed and self-employed compared to natives. Based on register
data of male immigrants in Denmark, we performed a detailed investigation of the immigrant–native difference in transition
patterns across labor market states. We find that a high proportion of immigrants from non-Western countries tend to be marginalized
relative to natives, and they tend to use self-employment to escape marginalization.

This paper investigates how education and the labour market affect Spanish individual decisions on the timing of marriage
and births, using a Cox hazard approach. It disentangles men and women, and two groups, Cohort 1945–1960 and Cohort 1961–1977.
Results show that female employment delays marriage in Cohort 1945–1960, but it has a reverse effect in Cohort 1961–1977.
We also find evidence that employment is a barrier for family formation since employed women postpone births in both cohorts.
The precarious Spanish labour markets, captured by female unemployment rates, delay family formation, especially by putting
off marriage. Male unemployment, at the individual level, impacts negatively on fertility only through delaying marriage.

A restrictive population policy led to almost doubling the number of newborns from one year to another in Romania in the 1960s.
Twenty years later, this large generation (of women) enters a marriage market with few eligible older mates, in a society
where marriage is a must. In this article, I analyze this social experiment within the broader frame of the marriage squeeze/two
sex models. Using various data from censuses and surveys, I argue that the marriage market is flexible even when is confronted
with disproportionately large cohorts. If the social pressure toward marriage is strong, the marriage rates do not necessarily
fall, but the mating age patterns change.

Are there gender and country of origin differences in immigrant labor market outcomes across European destinations? 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The 1994–2000 waves of the European Community Household Panel are used to study the earnings of immigrants as compared to
native workers in 15 European countries. At the time of arrival, there is a significant negative partial effect of foreign
birth on individual earnings compared to the native born in the destination of around 40%. These differences vary across origins
and destinations and by gender. Immigrant earnings catch-up to those of the native born after around 18 years in the destination.
Schooling matters more for earnings for women, whereas, language skills are relatively more important for men.
