The binary logistic regression is a commonly used statistical method when the outcome variable is dichotomous or binary. The explanatory variables are correlated in some situations of the logit model. This problem is called multicollinearity. It is known that the variance of the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) is inflated in the presence of multicollinearity. Therefore, in this study, we define a new two-parameter ridge estimator for the logistic regression model to decrease the variance and overcome multicollinearity problem. We compare the new estimator to the other well-known estimators by studying their mean squared error (MSE) properties. Moreover, a Monte Carlo simulation is designed to evaluate the performances of the estimators. Finally, a real data application is illustrated to show the applicability of the new method. According to the results of the simulation and real application, the new estimator outperforms the other estimators for all of the situations considered.  相似文献

This article introduces a general class of biased estimator, namely a generalized diagonal ridge-type (GDR) estimator, for the linear regression model when multicollinearity occurs. The estimator represents different kinds of biased estimators when different parameters are obtained. Some properties of this estimator are discussed and an iterative procedure is provided for selecting the parameters. A Monte Carlo simulation study and an application show that the GDR estimator performs much better than the ordinary least squares (OLS) estimator under the mean square error (MSE) criterion when severe multicollinearity is present.  相似文献

The binary logistic regression is a widely used statistical method when the dependent variable has two categories. In most of the situations of logistic regression, independent variables are collinear which is called the multicollinearity problem. It is known that multicollinearity affects the variance of maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) negatively. Therefore, this article introduces new shrinkage parameters for the Liu-type estimators in the Liu (2003) in the logistic regression model defined by Huang (2012) in order to decrease the variance and overcome the problem of multicollinearity. A Monte Carlo study is designed to show the goodness of the proposed estimators over MLE in the sense of mean squared error (MSE) and mean absolute error (MAE). Moreover, a real data case is given to demonstrate the advantages of the new shrinkage parameters.  相似文献

In this article, a two-parameter estimator is proposed to combat multicollinearity in the negative binomial regression model. The proposed two-parameter estimator is a general estimator which includes the maximum likelihood (ML) estimator, the ridge estimator (RE) and the Liu estimator as special cases. Some properties on the asymptotic mean-squared error (MSE) are derived and necessary and sufficient conditions for the superiority of the two-parameter estimator over the ML estimator and sufficient conditions for the superiority of the two-parameter estimator over the RE and the Liu estimator in the asymptotic mean-squared error (MSE) matrix sense are obtained. Furthermore, several methods and three rules for choosing appropriate shrinkage parameters are proposed. Finally, a Monte Carlo simulation study is given to illustrate some of the theoretical results.  相似文献

This paper deals with the problem of multicollinearity in a multiple linear regression model with linear equality restrictions. The restricted two parameter estimator which was proposed in case of multicollinearity satisfies the restrictions. The performance of the restricted two parameter estimator over the restricted least squares (RLS) estimator and the ordinary least squares (OLS) estimator is examined under the mean square error (MSE) matrix criterion when the restrictions are correct and not correct. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the restricted ridge regression, restricted Liu and restricted shrunken estimators, which are the special cases of the restricted two parameter estimator, to have a smaller MSE matrix than the RLS and the OLS estimators are derived when the restrictions hold true and do not hold true. Theoretical results are illustrated with numerical examples based on Webster, Gunst and Mason data and Gorman and Toman data. We conduct a final demonstration of the performance of the estimators by running a Monte Carlo simulation which shows that when the variance of the error term and the correlation between the explanatory variables are large, the restricted two parameter estimator performs better than the RLS estimator and the OLS estimator under the configurations examined.  相似文献

Negative binomial regression (NBR) and Poisson regression (PR) applications have become very popular in the analysis of count data in recent years. However, if there is a high degree of relationship between the independent variables, the problem of multicollinearity arises in these models. We introduce new two-parameter estimators (TPEs) for the NBR and the PR models by unifying the two-parameter estimator (TPE) of Özkale and Kaç?ranlar [The restricted and unrestricted two-parameter estimators. Commun Stat Theory Methods. 2007;36:2707–2725]. These new estimators are general estimators which include maximum likelihood (ML) estimator, ridge estimator (RE), Liu estimator (LE) and contraction estimator (CE) as special cases. Furthermore, biasing parameters of these estimators are given and a Monte Carlo simulation is done to evaluate the performance of these estimators using mean square error (MSE) criterion. The benefits of the new TPEs are also illustrated in an empirical application. The results show that the new proposed TPEs for the NBR and the PR models are better than the ML estimator, the RE and the LE.  相似文献

The Poisson regression model (PRM) is employed in modelling the relationship between a count variable (y) and one or more explanatory variables. The parameters of PRM are popularly estimated using the Poisson maximum likelihood estimator (PMLE). There is a tendency that the explanatory variables grow together, which results in the problem of multicollinearity. The variance of the PMLE becomes inflated in the presence of multicollinearity. The Poisson ridge regression (PRRE) and Liu estimator (PLE) have been suggested as an alternative to the PMLE. However, in this study, we propose a new estimator to estimate the regression coefficients for the PRM when multicollinearity is a challenge. We perform a simulation study under different specifications to assess the performance of the new estimator and the existing ones. The performance was evaluated using the scalar mean square error criterion and the mean squared error prediction error. The aircraft damage data was adopted for the application study and the estimators’ performance judged by the SMSE and the mean squared prediction error. The theoretical comparison shows that the proposed estimator outperforms other estimators. This is further supported by the simulation study and the application result.KEYWORDS: Poisson regression model, Poisson maximum likelihood estimator, multicollinearity, Poisson ridge regression, Liu estimator, simulation  相似文献

In this paper, we briefly overview different zero-inflated probability distributions. We compare the performance of the estimates of Poisson, Generalized Poisson, ZIP, ZIGP and ZINB models through Mean square error (MSE), bias and Standard error (SE) when the samples are generated from ZIP distribution. We propose a new estimator referred to as probability estimator (PE) of inflation parameter of ZIP distribution based on moment estimator (ME) of the mean parameter and compare its performance with ME and maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) through a simulation study. We use the PE along with ME and MLE to fit ZIP distribution to various zero-inflated datasets and observe that the results do not differ significantly. We recommend using PE in place of MLE since it is easy to calculate and the simulation study in this paper demonstrates that the PE performs as good as MLE irrespective of the sample size.  相似文献

The maximum likelihood (ML) method is used to estimate the unknown Gamma regression (GR) coefficients. In the presence of multicollinearity, the variance of the ML method becomes overstated and the inference based on the ML method may not be trustworthy. To combat multicollinearity, the Liu estimator has been used. In this estimator, estimation of the Liu parameter d is an important problem. A few estimation methods are available in the literature for estimating such a parameter. This study has considered some of these methods and also proposed some new methods for estimation of the d. The Monte Carlo simulation study has been conducted to assess the performance of the proposed methods where the mean squared error (MSE) is considered as a performance criterion. Based on the Monte Carlo simulation and application results, it is shown that the Liu estimator is always superior to the ML and recommendation about which best Liu parameter should be used in the Liu estimator for the GR model is given.  相似文献

The logistic regression model is used when the response variables are dichotomous. In the presence of multicollinearity, the variance of the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) becomes inflated. The Liu estimator for the linear regression model is proposed by Liu to remedy this problem. Urgan and Tez and Mansson et al. examined the Liu estimator (LE) for the logistic regression model. We introduced the restricted Liu estimator (RLE) for the logistic regression model. Moreover, a Monte Carlo simulation study is conducted for comparing the performances of the MLE, restricted maximum likelihood estimator (RMLE), LE, and RLE for the logistic regression model.  相似文献

It is known that multicollinearity inflates the variance of the maximum likelihood estimator in logistic regression. Especially, if the primary interest is in the coefficients, the impact of collinearity can be very serious. To deal with collinearity, a ridge estimator was proposed by Schaefer et al. The primary interest of this article is to introduce a Liu-type estimator that had a smaller total mean squared error (MSE) than the Schaefer's ridge estimator under certain conditions. Simulation studies were conducted that evaluated the performance of this estimator. Furthermore, the proposed estimator was applied to a real-life dataset.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this paper, assuming that there exist omitted variables in the specified model, we analytically derive the exact formula for the mean squared error (MSE) of a heterogeneous pre-test (HPT) estimator whose components are the ordinary least squares (OLS) and feasible ridge regression (FRR) estimators. Since we cannot examine the MSE performance analytically, we execute numerical evaluations to investigate small sample properties of the HPT estimator, and compare the MSE performance of the HPT estimator with those of the FRR estimator and the usual OLS estimator. Our numerical results show that (1) the HPT estimator is more efficient when the model misspecification is severe; (2) the HPT estimator with the optimal critical value obtained under the correctly specified model can be safely used even when there exist omitted variables in the specified model.  相似文献

Estimation of the correlation coefficient between two variates (p) in the presence of correlated observations from a bivar iate normal population is considered The estimated maximum likelihood estimator (EMLE), an estimate based on the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE), is proposed and studied for the estimation of p For the large sample case , approximate expressions foi the variance and the bias of the Pearson estimate of the correlation coefficient are derived. These expressions suggests that the Pearson’s estimator possesses high mean square error (MSE) in estimating ρ in comparison to the MLE The MSE is particularly high when the observations within clusters aie highly correlated. The Pearson’s estimate, the MLE, and the EMLE aie evaluated in a simulation study This study shows that the proposed EMLE pefoims bettei than the Pearson’s correlation coefficient except when the number of clusters is small.  相似文献

The Loss of Efficiency Estimating Linear Functions under Restrictions   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
This article is motivated by the problem of estimating contrast in a one-way ANOVA model with restrictions in the parameter vector. We prove that when the restrictions are given by a tree order or a simple order the MLE of some contrast has greater MSE than the unrestricted estimator. A similar behaviour of the MLE is exhibited in a general restricted setting given by a multivariate normal distribution with mean vector constrained to belong to a circular cone. The approach we use focuses on the central direction of the cones. These directions appear to have the greater MSE when the dimension of the restricted cone is big enough.  相似文献

The beta-binomial model has been widely used as an analytically tractable alternative that captures the overdispersion of an intra-correlated, binomial random variable, X. However, the model validation for X has been rarely investigated. As a beta-binomial mass function takes on a few different shapes, the model validation is examined for each of the classified shapes in this article. Further, the mean square error (MSE) is illustrated for each shape by the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) based on a beta-binomial model approach and the method of moments estimator (MME) in order to gauge when and how much the MLE is biased.  相似文献

It is known that collinearity among the explanatory variables in generalized linear models (GLMs) inflates the variance of maximum likelihood estimators. To overcome multicollinearity in GLMs, ordinary ridge estimator and restricted estimator were proposed. In this study, a restricted ridge estimator is introduced by unifying the ordinary ridge estimator and the restricted estimator in GLMs and its mean squared error (MSE) properties are discussed. The MSE comparisons are done in the context of first-order approximated estimators. The results are illustrated by a numerical example and two simulation studies are conducted with Poisson and binomial responses.  相似文献

A new modified Jackknifed estimator for the Poisson regression model   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The Poisson regression is very popular in applied researches when analyzing the count data. However, multicollinearity problem arises for the Poisson regression model when the independent variables are highly intercorrelated. Shrinkage estimator is a commonly applied solution to the general problem caused by multicollinearity. Recently, the ridge regression (RR) estimators and some methods for estimating the ridge parameter k in the Poisson regression have been proposed. It has been found that some estimators are better than the commonly used maximum-likelihood (ML) estimator and some other RR estimators. In this study, the modified Jackknifed Poisson ridge regression (MJPR) estimator is proposed to remedy the multicollinearity. A simulation study and a real data example are provided to evaluate the performance of estimators. Both mean-squared error and the percentage relative error are considered as the performance criteria. The simulation study and the real data example results show that the proposed MJPR method outperforms the Poisson ridge regression, Jackknifed Poisson ridge regression and the ML in all of the different situations evaluated in this paper.  相似文献

Shrinkage estimator is a commonly applied solution to the general problem caused by multicollinearity. Recently, the ridge regression (RR) estimators for estimating the ridge parameter k in the negative binomial (NB) regression have been proposed. The Jackknifed estimators are obtained to remedy the multicollinearity and reduce the bias. A simulation study is provided to evaluate the performance of estimators. Both mean squared error (MSE) and the percentage relative error (PRE) are considered as the performance criteria. The simulated result indicated that some of proposed Jackknifed estimators should be preferred to the ML method and ridge estimators to reduce MSE and bias.  相似文献

This paper deals with the derivation of (i) the MLE (ii) the MVUE (iii) a Bayes estimator of the probability in the title, for the case p = 2. Simulation studies are carried out to compare these estimators. The results suggest that the MLE and the Bayes estimator are biased and the Bayes estimator have the smallest MSE. In the general case, explicit expression for the probability in the title is derived and the MLE and Bayes estimator are obtained. A general method of deriving the MVUE is pointed out. Because of the simulation studies for p = 2 it is recommended that the Bayes or predictive estimator should be used.  相似文献

?iray et al. proposed a restricted Liu estimator to overcome multicollinearity in the logistic regression model. They also used a Monte Carlo simulation to study the properties of the restricted Liu estimator. However, they did not present the theoretical result about the mean squared error properties of the restricted estimator compared to MLE, restricted maximum likelihood estimator (RMLE) and Liu estimator. In this article, we compare the restricted Liu estimator with MLE, RMLE and Liu estimator in the mean squared error sense and we also present a method to choose a biasing parameter. Finally, a real data example and a Monte Carlo simulation are conducted to illustrate the benefits of the restricted Liu estimator.  相似文献
