WOMEN have played a key role in sustainable development worldwide. In China, women are regarded as "half the sky." Like women from all walks of life, Chinese women have been the new force in environmental protection.

Since its inception 120 million rural women have been involved in the "Learning and Competing Campaign" (Dual Campaign for short). About 100 million women have learned one or two practical skills, 15 million have participated in the courses of farmers' correspondence college and agricultural schools and 601,000 women have obtained the title of farm technician. A great number of outstanding women who have good education, understand technology and show considerable management skills have benefited from the campaign. Rural women's economic and social status has improved noticeably and their mental attitude has also changed greatly for the better.

How to Choose—Job Selection for Female Graduates

TIMES have changed. Now rather than seeking a good husband, women find solace in good careers and self-reliance, according to a recent Beijing University survey. A 1995 questionnaire of women graduates of Beijing University indicated that more than half the graduates believe women work in order to gain self-reliance in person and economy; 36 percent of these students agreed that women work in order to show their power, make a contribution to society and realize their own value. The survey of 1,254 people was conducted by Beijing University's "Women's Issues Research Center."
