表演与后现代

暂时脱离尘世——丰子恺的"闲情"散文及其文化内蕴

丰子恺优美一面的散文与漫画创作,是与他的“绝缘说”紧密联系在一起的。在他的艺术作品里,虽然我们很难看到纯粹描写“看夕阳,看秋河,看花,听雨,闻香”一类的作品,也很难读到传统士大夫式的山水遨游与田园鉴赏;但他的作品,比如小儿女的神态、朋友的夜饮、闲居时候的心情等等,同样为我们揭示了一个元气淋漓的精神世界,一个充满着人间情味的有情世界。在当代社会文化语境下重新审读这一部分作品,我们可以发现其在消解现实生活中的紧张、异化与窒枯等方面所具有的文化内蕴及意义。

菲利普·罗斯前后期小说创作主题之比较

历史、美国梦、犹太性、情爱、死亡等社会文化主题在美国当代作家菲利普.罗斯的创作中反复出现,构成了其作品的整体风貌。但是,这些文化主题在罗斯的前后期作品中有不同的措置。在前期作品中,罗斯将目光集中在自己最熟悉的犹太社区,揭示处在传统和现代矛盾中的美国犹太移民渴望脱离传统桎梏、融入主流社会,而又无法摆脱传统、实现美国梦的痛苦现状以及由之引发的关于性爱、死亡的思索。在后期作品中,虽然也安置了相似的文化要素,但随着罗斯创作思想的发展以及他本人及小说代言人的逐渐衰老,他将历史元素深入渗透到美国梦、死亡、情色、身份追寻等文化母题中,且在生命进入衰老阶段的人生体验中,让各文化主题之间交错搭配,在与历史的呼应中互相定义,在反思当代美国犹太人的生存困境时有了更为宽阔的社会舞台。罗斯虽然在同一文化语境中截取了同样的文化素材,并没有简单的自我重复,而是在传统文化主题的老弦上奏出了新曲。     

从《榆树下的欲望》中的自然主义看奥尼尔的悲剧意识

尤金·奥尼尔于1888年10月16日生于纽约。1936年曾获诺贝尔文学奖。1943年后由于手部肌肉麻痹而被迫停止写作。1953年11月27日逝世于波斯顿。奥尼尔是美国现代戏剧的开创者,有“美国戏剧之父”之誉。 奥尼尔熟知舞台,实验一切戏剧形式,重视自古希腊以来太阳底下的任何主题。他的每部作品都在内容和形式上进行探索。半个多世纪来,评论界和读者不断地重新认识奥尼尔,开掘他那些悲观执拗的文字的含意。 奥尼尔的《榆树下的欲望》(1924年)虽以古希腊的悲剧《俄狄浦斯王》、《希波吕托斯》和《美狄亚》①中的神话作为典故,但《榆树》的悲剧根据却…

The Black Regulars: Buffalo Soldiers during the Indian war era as crime fighters and peacekeepers on the Western frontier, 1866–1892

The purpose of this review of the Buffalo Soldier is to explore their peacekeeping and crime fighting duties on the Western frontier during the period of 1866–1892. The Army was called upon to play a role in a number of controversial areas of American life and society: Southern Reconstruction fighting against the Native Americans, strikebreakers; and finally the railroad strikes of 1877. Following the Civil War, while performing some of these roles, the Army faced a great deal of hostility. It is one of the ironies of American History, as historians Foner [Foner, J. D. (1970). The United States soldier between two wars: Army life and reforms, 1865–1898. New York: Humanities Press] and Jackson and Katz [Jackson, S. D., & Katz, W. L. (1969). Preface of the Arno edition in under fire with the tenth U.S. cavalry. New York: Arno Press] have noted, that the Buffalo Soldier to earn their esteemed reputation as honorable fighting men, had to assist in the suppression of the Native American people and to act as strikebreakers. However, the literature shows that they also brought peace and civilization to the West through their law enforcement and other peacekeeping duties.     

The influence of socio-economic characteristics on the political attitudes of American Indians

We examine the political attitudes of American Indians in eastern Oklahoma where they make up almost 20% of the population. We argue that American Indians in the region play the same role that other minorities in the southern states—notably blacks and Hispanics—do in resisting the region's realignment from the Democratic to the Republican Party. American Indians in the region are populists in that they are economically liberal and religiously conservative. The results of our analysis suggest that the socio-economic characteristics of American Indians play a greater role in explaining American Indians’ political attitudes than their ethnic identification.

明清以来的市镇:中国城镇化发展的历史因缘

本文致力于厘清关于市镇研究的理论传统,对明清以来市镇的演变在经济、社会和政治等多个层面进行考察。从经济层面看,市镇是连接地方性市场和世界体系的节点,并越来越具有超层级、跨区域和金融化的特点;从社会层面看,市镇是有层级、有组织的,并具有很强的包容性;从政治层面看,它是地方自治化和国家政权建设的着力点。在社会结构中的中间性质是市镇的本质特征。社会学对于市镇的研究必须将其看作一种总体性的社会事实,在对生命体验、生活智慧、伦理道德、乡风民俗等民情因素进行调查研究的前提下,考察其与具体制度和社会结构之间的关联。     

Religion and Public Opinion about Same‐Sex Marriage*

Objective. The goal of this article is to analyze the relationship between religion, measured in terms of religious affiliation and religiosity, and public opinion about same‐sex marriage, civil unions, and a federal constitutional amendment that would prohibit gay marriage. Methods. We use logistic regression with calculated standardized coefficients to analyze data from a nationally representative survey of 1,610 respondents conducted in March–April 2004. Results. Religious variables perform better than demographic measures in models of attitudes about same‐sex unions. Non‐Protestants are much more likely to support same‐sex unions than are Protestants, and individuals with conservative attitudes toward morality and secularism and (to a lesser extent) those who participate actively in religious life are more likely to oppose such unions. On the whole, religious variables play a weaker role in predicting support for a constitutional amendment to prevent gay marriage than they do in predicting attitudes toward same‐sex unions. Conclusions. Religious variables play powerful roles in structuring attitudes about same‐sex unions. Moreover, homosexuality appears to be a major component of the “moral values” discourse that is currently so popular in American politics.

帝国时期,火政是城市社会生活的重要内容,且往往与区域社会的变迁有着密切关系。明清时期,在西江流域社会转型的大背景下,广西梧州城经历了从军事重镇到商业枢纽的转变,而这一过程被全息地投射到梧州城火政的演变上。本文以梧州城的火政为中心,通过探讨其演变的过程,重新理解明清时期西江流域社会的地方动乱、人口流动及商业贸易等重大问题。     

‘Orderly made’: re-appraising household inventories in seventeenth-century England

The amateur appraisers who prepared probate inventories were commentators on social and economic change in early modern England. This article considers the form these sources took, to illuminate the thinking of appraisers and the social context of appraising. Although historians recognise the limitations of inventories, they have paid little attention to them as records of the act of appraisal. Through a case study of one seventeenth-century town – Thame in Oxfordshire – individual styles of appraising are explored. Inventories were representations, based on conscious reflection about how to arrange these ordered lists. Appraising had its own history, and approaches changed over time in response to the growing number of household goods and spaces. Broad participation supported a culture of appraisal, but a small number of mostly better-off individuals were often able to control the process, using specialist skills. The study of appraisal brings to life the cooper Andrew Parslow, the town’s dominant appraiser in the late seventeenth century, who devised an entirely new ‘summary’ format, and whose standing in society depended upon his role as an appraiser. Parslow’s practice is significant in demonstrating how appraisers devised new ways of representing material culture during the century, as their understandings of possessions changed.
