This study sought to assess the effects of modeling and guided practice as components within a comprehensive testicular self-examination education program for college-aged men. We studied three treatment groups (N = 161) at two Arkansas universities. The variables investigated were knowledge of testicular cancer, attitudes toward testicular cancer, and frequency of self-reported testicular self-examination. A summary of the major findings revealed a significant difference in knowledge of testicular cancer and attitudes toward testicular cancer and a significant difference in frequency of testicular self-examination for all treatment groups. Modeling and guided practice yielded no significant differences in knowledge of testicular cancer or frequency of self-reported testicular self-examination but some significant attitudinal differences. Results indicated that subjects were not knowledgeable about testicular cancer and that most (91.7%) were not practicing testicular self-examination. Three months after participation in one of three education programs, 78.9% of the subjects indicated they had performed testicular self-examination. Modeling and guided practice as components of one education approach used appear to be an essential strategy to increase the practice of regular testicular self-examination.  相似文献

Abstract

Both male and female students who utilize Brandeis University Health Services for primary care were assessed regarding their preference as to the gender of providers of genital examinations, together with the frequency with which each sex and academic class performs genital self-examinations, during a two-month period of the 1981 Spring Semester, using a brief self-administered questionnaire.

Among 234 undergraduate and graduate student men and women who returned questionnaires, women and men preferred to be examinated by same-sex examiners; less than half of the women and nearly none of the men would want a chaperone present during the examination, even when the examiner is not the same gender. An increasing percentage of these young women perform breast examinations as they get older, but there is no comparable rise in testicular self-examinations with increasing age among the men. It is important for physicians who care for adolescents and young adults in university health services to provide access to same-gender health care providers when genital exams are done. It is also important to educate men about testicular examinations, just as women are educated about breast examinations.  相似文献

This study was conducted to determine the level of testicular self-examination (TSE) awareness and practice and to identify characteristics related to TSE awareness and practice in a sample of college men. A 26-item survey was administered to 404 male college students. Forty-two percent reported they were aware of TSE, more than 41% had been taught TSE, and 22% had examined their testicles at least once in their lifetime. Approximately 8% of the study population reported practicing TSE once a month. The PRECEDE model was used to categorize the significant variables that influenced monthly TSE practice. Age and college class were significant demographic variables; predisposing factors included having heard of testicular cancer, knowing about recommended practice rates, feeling that cancer can be controlled, and awareness of the risk factors associated with testicular cancer. Having been taught TSE was the statistically significant enabling factor. A discussion of TSE in the past 6 months was the significant reinforcing factor.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This study explored the role of sex guilt in the relationship between culture and testicular self-examination (TSE) and physician testicular examination (PTE) in Euro-Canadian and Chinese men. Euro-Canadian (n = 42) and Chinese (n = 77) male university students completed online questionnaires. Euro-Canadian men were more likely to have had TSE and PTE than Chinese men. Sex guilt was higher in Chinese men. Sex guilt mediated the relationship between ethnicity and PTE but not the relationship between ethnicity and TSE. Among the Chinese men, sex guilt mediated the relationship between Westernization and PTE but not between Westernization and TSE.  相似文献

Abstract

Female college students (N = 105) were surveyed regarding their acceptance of instruction concerning breast self-examination (BSE) in a film format and the frequency of personal performance of BSE. Factors which served to explain variation in acceptance scores were related to instruction, performance, conservatism, and perceived threat. Factors related to frequency of BSE performance included conservatism, close friend or relative with breast cancer, confidence, and previous instruction in BSE.

“Effect of Alcohol Intake on High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Levels in Runners and Inactive Men,” G. HARLEY HARTUNG, et al. Plasma high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC) level was measured before and after alcohol abstinence and after resumption of a controlled alcohol dose in 16 marathon runners, 15 joggers, and 13 inactive men. A three-week period of abstinence resulted in a significant decrease in HDLC concentration in the inactive men (49.8 to 41.8 mg/dL). Three weeks of alcohol consumption (1,065 ml of beer per day) produced a significant increase in HDLC level to 50.9 mg/dL. No change in HDLC level was found for the marathon group or the joggers during abstinence or three weeks of alcohol intake. The consumption of alcohol in moderation seems to be associated with increased HDLC levels in inactive men but not in men who engage in regular running or jogging.  相似文献

Abstract

Objective: In this study, the authors explored the association between dispositional cancer worry (DCW), risk perceptions (RP), and physical activity (PA) among college females. Participants: Four hundred fifty-one females from a midwestern university completed an online survey in September/October 2012. Methods: DCW severity, DCW frequency, RP, and PA were measured along with qualitative data about PA as cancer prevention. Results: Sixty-nine percent of participants did not meet PA recommendations. DCW severity was a significant predictor of meeting PA recommendations (odds ratio = 1.2, 95% confidence interval [1.00, 1.38]; p = .05). Qualitative data revealed a lack of knowledge about breast cancer risk and PA as cancer prevention. Conclusions: College women do not engage in enough PA nor feel at risk for developing breast cancer. A lack of knowledge exists about the cancer prevention benefit of PA. Results indicate a need for PA interventions that both educate breast cancer risk and motivate health protective behaviors.  相似文献

Cervical cancer is a well-established smoking-related illness, but many at-risk women are unaware of this link. Objective: The authors designed this study to (1) investigate the relationship of smoking behavior with the history of abnormal Pap test results, sexual history, and perceived risk of cervical cancer and (2) determine whether self-classified smoking status (and hence perceived risk) corresponds with actual smoking behavior in a college student population. Participants and Method Summary: College women students (N = 135) completed a survey assessing smoking history, health history, sexual risk behavior, and risk awareness. Results: Relative to those who had not smoked in the past month, current smokers (n = 36, or 27% of the total sample) perceived themselves to be at higher risk for developing cervical cancer, but did not demonstrate increased awareness of specific cervical cancer risk factors, including smoking. Twenty-eight percent (10 of 36) of past-month smokers did not define themselves as current smokers. Conclusion: The authors conclude that antismoking and health-related messages targeting smokers may misfire for individuals who do not define themselves as smokers but are nonetheless at risk for smoking-related consequences and escalating use.  相似文献

Social workers seeking licensure in most states must pass one of the four different written examinations developed by the American Association of State Social Work Boards (AASSWB). These examinations are claimed to be valid measures of professional social work knowledge and competence to practice. To test this claim, we administered the multiple-choice 50-item Advanced practice examination contained within the official AASSWB Advanced study guide to 42 first year MSW students. Weblanked out the actual question content, and asked the students to select the correct answers from among the four choices given. Chance would suggest that the average score should be about 25% correct (one out of four). In actualitythe students' scores averaged 37% correct, a statistically significant difference. These results challenge the content and discriminant validity of the AASSWB examination and call for further studies on the examinations' value.  相似文献

Abstract

College students believe that they are more likely to be ill during examination periods than at other times in the academic year. We in the health service hypothesized that urinary tract infections are not affected by the demands of the academic calendar.

During a 4-year study, the university health service obtained urine culture data prospectively from 456 patients who had a total of 508 episodes of urinary tract infections. Each year, the number of urinary tract infections decreased during both midterm and final examination periods, but rebounded to higher-than-average levels in the second week following the midterm examination period, as well as during the second week of the second (spring) semester, immediately after the mid-winter recess. Mean duration of symptoms was 34 hours (range, from 12 to 60).

Urinary tract infections were less common during examination periods, when students were preoccupied with academic responsibilities, but such infections increased in frequency in the period immediately after examinations, when sexual intimacy was resumed or when sexual intercourse with a new partner began. Urinary tract infections in college women, the study indicated, are primarily related to sexual intercourse, and susceptibility is only indirectly affected by the demands of the academic calendar.  相似文献

Objective: A growing number of researchers have examined the use of over-the-counter (OTC) medications and herbal or dietary supplements among college students. There is concern about the efficacy and safety of these products, particularly because students appear to use them at a higher rate than does the general public. Participants and Methods: The authors administered surveys to college students (N = 201) to assess the frequency of use in the past week. Results: A substantial percentage reported using OTC medications (74.1%), herbal or dietary supplements (70.6%), or both concurrently (61.2%). Dose frequency of OTC medications was the best predictor of self-reported emotional distress in the past week. Higher doses of products containing pseudoephedrine or valerian were associated with self-reported anxiety. Conclusions: These data further reflect an increasing trend toward self-medication among college students. Investigators must conduct reliability and validity studies to evaluate the clinical utility of the measurement tool developed in this study.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Objective: College students are a high-risk population for new human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV) diagnoses. Although condom use self-efficacy and HIV knowledge can protect against risky sexual behavior (RSB), these same protective factors have been shown to exacerbate RSB. The influence of alcohol use can further complicate these protective factors to influence RSB. Participants: 689 African American/Black and non-Hispanic White college students attending a public university in the Southeast United States. Method: This study sought to examine the relations between condom use self-efficacy and HIV knowledge with RSB and the moderating effect of alcohol use. Results: Findings showed positive associations between RSB and HIV knowledge and alcohol use. Unexpectedly, low frequency drinkers with high condom use self-efficacy were at increased risk for RSB compared to high frequency drinking counterparts. Conclusions: Findings point to the need to target prevention services for low-risk drinkers in college settings.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This study explored bachelor’s-level social work students’ readiness to practice with individuals with intellectual disability (ID) and their attitudes toward individuals with ID. Fifty-eight students completed a Web-based survey that assessed their knowledge of four etiological conditions and their willingness to maintain social contact with individuals with various etiological conditions. Students also participated in focus groups that further explored their understanding of ID and readiness to practice in the ID field. The survey results indicated scientific understanding of causes and effective interventions as well as openness to interact with individuals with ID. Thematic analyses of focus group interviews highlighted four themes underlying students’ readiness to practice in the ID field. Discussion includes implications of findings for social work education.  相似文献

Abstract

Lazarus has proposed that palliative defenses against threat that interfere with direct efforts to alleviate the threat may prove maladaptive. Three evasive cognitive attributes that circumvent awareness of threat were studied to determine whether they related to the prevalence of stress symptoms in college students. Repression (selective forgetting of threatening material), awareness of the repressive defense, and internal scanning (breadth of association to cues) were considered. College students of both sexes who engaged in evasive cognitive activity reported more stress symptoms than those who did not, with a progressive increase in stress as increasingly homogeneous groups were considered. Students who defended themselves by repression experienced more stress than those who did not. Repressors who were the least aware of their use of this defense reported even more stress. Unconscious repressors who were the least reflective (narrow scanners) showed the highest frequency of stress symptoms.  相似文献

Abstract

Objective: Caffeine and dietary supplement (DS) use by college students is not well-documented. Given reported associations between energy drink consumption and sensation seeking, we used the Sensation Seeking Scale Form V (SSS-V) to assess relationships between sensation-seeking, caffeine, and DS use. Participants: Data from 1,248 college students from five US institutions were collected from 2009 to 2011. Methods: Linear regression was used to examine relationships between scores on the SSS-V and caffeine and DS use, demographic, and lifestyle characteristics. Results: Male sex, nonHispanic race-ethnicity, higher family income, tobacco use, consuming caffeinated beverages, more than 400?mg caffeine per day, and energy drinks with alcohol at least 50% of the time, were significantly associated with higher total SSS-V scores (P?<?0.001). Those using protein DSs had higher total, disinhibition, and boredom susceptibility SSS-V scores (Ps?<?0.001). Conclusions: Results demonstrate a positive correlation between sensation-seeking attitudes and habitual caffeine, energy drink, and DS consumption.  相似文献

Abstract

Uncertainty is a fundamental characteristic of medical practice. Renee Fox described three types of uncertainty: limitations in the body of medical knowledge, incomplete mastery of existing knowledge, and distinguishing between limitations and mastery of knowledge. This investigation administered ten Likert-format questions about uncertainty to 171 incoming medical students at one state medical school Items were reliable over a six week test-retest, and validity was supported by correlations with an Intolerance of Ambiguity scale. Entering students recognized that uncertainty exists in medical knowledge and mastery of medical knowledge. Factor analysis of the ten item uncertainty scale revealed three dimensions: uncertainty of the profession, practice certainty, and growth in uncertainty. No significant differences in the uncertainty items, scale, or factors existed by demographic characteristics or medical specialty preferences. These findings suggest that students are aware of issues surrounding uncertainty in medicine as they begin medical school, but medical uncertainty at this early stage in medical socialization is not sufficiently powerful to be associated with medical specialty preference.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE AND PARTICIPANTS: In 2006, the authors examined intention to receive an HPV vaccine among 340 college students. METHODS: A total of 138 men and 202 women completed questionnaires. The authors measured intention by asking participants how likely they would be to accept an HPV vaccine that prevented against (1) all HPV, (2) cervical cancer but not genital warts, (3) genital warts but not cervical cancer, and (4) both genital warts and cervical cancer. RESULTS: Men and women reported high intent to receive an HPV vaccine, although women did so at a significantly higher rate (77.5% vs 88.6%, respectively; p < .01). Men were less willing to receive a vaccine that prevents cervical cancer alone than they were to receive one that prevents cervical cancer and genital warts (34.1% vs 77.5%, p < .001). Intent to receive the vaccine was significantly greater among participants who reported more than 5 sex partners and correctly answered 2 or 3 HPV knowledge questions. CONCLUSIONS: Interest varied according to sexual history, according to knowledge about HPV, and (in men) according to vaccine target.  相似文献

Objective: The researchers aimed to evaluate the knowledge and perceptions of first-year female nursing students about human papillomavirus (HPV), cervical cancer (CC), and HPV vaccination. Participants: The sample included 690 female nursing students from sampled universities between April and June 2015. Methods: Students were surveyed by using a pretested HPV and CC awareness questionnaire. Results: More than half of the students (65.1%) answered questions incorrectly with a mean HPV knowledge score of 6.085?±?3.38. The majority of students (82.6%) did not hear HPV vaccine. Only, 2.8% of the students had been vaccinated. A statistically significant relationship was found between HPV knowledge score and hearing about HPV vaccine (U?=?28280.500, p?=?.015), and believing HPV vaccine protectiveness (χ2?=?14.153, p?=?.001). Conclusions: This study highlights the lack of knowledge and low level of awareness about HPV, CC, and HPV vaccination among first-year nursing college students.  相似文献

Asian American college students are at high risk for hepatitis B virus (HBV). Participants and Methods: Vietnamese American students completed a questionnaire assessing HBV knowledge and attitudes. The authors performed statistical analyses to examine the relationship between HBV knowledge and participant characteristics. They also performed logistic regression to identify predictors of vaccination. Participants' mean age was 22.2 years, and almost 50% were born in the United States. Results: Only 29.9% knew that Asian Americans are at high risk for HBV. Participants who had undergone screening or vaccination or had a family member with HBV or liver disease had significantly higher levels of HBV knowledge. Less acculturated students were less likely to have received vaccination. Those with higher levels of knowledge were more likely to have received the vaccine. Conclusions: HBV educational programs targeting young Asian American individuals are needed, with emphasis on reaching less acculturated individuals. Institutions of higher education are important locales to coordinate HBV efforts for young Asian Americans.  相似文献

College students are at high risk for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, yet their knowledge and self-protective behaviors appear inadequate. Researchers who have measured HPV-related knowledge and behaviors in evaluating college intervention efforts pay secondary attention to black college students because this group generally represents only a small subset of samples of the broader college population. Objective and Participants The authors' purpose in this study was to examine HPV-related knowledge and behaviors in 351 black undergraduates attending a historically black southeastern university in the spring of 2003. Methods Voluntary and anonymous student participation was solicited in randomly selected undergraduate classes. Results Results indicated that most students lacked HPV awareness (64%), became aware of HPV largely after infection, and gained their HPV knowledge from a health-care provider or college class. The authors performed an analysis by gender and found that women were more knowledgeable about HPV than were men. Observed HPV-related knowledge and behaviors were similar to samples of the broader US college population. Conclusions Findings suggest a greater need for HPV intervention efforts for all college students, including those at black colleges.  相似文献
