A single-population Markovian stochastic epidemic model is defined so that the underlying social structure of the population is described by a Bernoulli random graph. The parameters of the model govern the rate of infection, the length of the infectious period, and the probability of social contact with another individual in the population. Markov chain Monte Carlo methods are developed to facilitate Bayesian inference for the parameters of both the epidemic model and underlying unknown social structure. The methods are applied in various examples of both illustrative and real-life data, with two different kinds of data structure considered.

A stochastic epidemic model with several kinds of susceptible is used to analyse temporal disease outbreak data from a Bayesian perspective. Prior distributions are used to model uncertainty in the actual numbers of susceptibles initially present. The posterior distribution of the parameters of the model is explored via Markov chain Monte Carlo methods. The methods are illustrated using two datasets, and the results are compared where possible to results obtained by previous analyses.

Abstract. A stochastic epidemic model is defined in which each individual belongs to a household, a secondary grouping (typically school or workplace) and also the community as a whole. Moreover, infectious contacts take place in these three settings according to potentially different rates. For this model, we consider how different kinds of data can be used to estimate the infection rate parameters with a view to understanding what can and cannot be inferred. Among other things we find that temporal data can be of considerable inferential benefit compared with final size data, that the degree of heterogeneity in the data can have a considerable effect on inference for non‐household transmission, and that inferences can be materially different from those obtained from a model with only two levels of mixing. We illustrate our findings by analysing a highly detailed dataset concerning a measles outbreak in Hagelloch, Germany.

Stochastic volatility models have been widely appreciated in empirical finance such as option pricing, risk management, etc. Recent advances of Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques made it possible to fit all kinds of stochastic volatility models of increasing complexity within Bayesian framework. In this article, we propose a new Bayesian model selection procedure based on Bayes factor and a classical thermodynamic integration technique named path sampling to select an appropriate stochastic volatility model. The performance of the developed procedure is illustrated with an application to the daily pound/dollar exchange rates data set.

Approximate Bayesian Inference for Survival Models
Abstract. Bayesian analysis of time‐to‐event data, usually called survival analysis, has received increasing attention in the last years. In Cox‐type models it allows to use information from the full likelihood instead of from a partial likelihood, so that the baseline hazard function and the model parameters can be jointly estimated. In general, Bayesian methods permit a full and exact posterior inference for any parameter or predictive quantity of interest. On the other side, Bayesian inference often relies on Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques which, from the user point of view, may appear slow at delivering answers. In this article, we show how a new inferential tool named integrated nested Laplace approximations can be adapted and applied to many survival models making Bayesian analysis both fast and accurate without having to rely on MCMC‐based inference.

We propose a Bayesian stochastic search approach to selecting restrictions on multivariate regression models where the errors exhibit deterministic or stochastic conditional volatilities. We develop a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm that generates posterior restrictions on the regression coefficients and Cholesky decompositions of the covariance matrix of the errors. Numerical simulations with artificially generated data show that the proposed method is effective in selecting the data-generating model restrictions and improving the forecasting performance of the model. Applying the method to daily foreign exchange rate data, we conduct stochastic search on a VAR model with stochastic conditional volatilities.

If at least one out of two serial machines that produce a specific product in manufacturing environments malfunctions, there will be non conforming items produced. Determining the optimal time of the machines' maintenance is the one of major concerns. While a convenient common practice for this kind of problem is to fit a single probability distribution to the combined defect data, it does not adequately capture the fact that there are two different underlying causes of failures. A better approach is to view the defects as arising from a mixture population: one due to the first machine failures and the other due to the second one. In this article, a mixture model along with both Bayesian inference and stochastic dynamic programming approaches are used to find the multi-stage optimal replacement strategy. Using the posterior probability of the machines to be in state λ1, λ2 (the failure rates of defective items produced by machine 1 and 2, respectively), we first formulate the problem as a stochastic dynamic programming model. Then, we derive some properties for the optimal value of the objective function and propose a solution algorithm. At the end, the application of the proposed methodology is demonstrated by a numerical example and an error analysis is performed to evaluate the performances of the proposed procedure. The results of this analysis show that the proposed method performs satisfactorily when a different number of observations on the times between productions of defective products is available.

A Bayesian approach to modeling a rich class of nonconjugate problems is presented. An adaptive Monte Carlo integration technique known as the Gibbs sampler is proposed as a mechanism for implementing a conceptually and computationally simple solution in such a framework. The result is a general strategy for obtaining marginal posterior densities under changing specification of the model error densities and related prior densities. We illustrate the approach in a nonlinear regression setting, comparing the merits of three candidate error distributions.

We address the problem of robust model selection for finite memory stochastic processes. Consider m independent samples, with most of them being realizations of the same stochastic process with law Q, which is the one we want to retrieve. We define the asymptotic breakdown point γ for a model selection procedure and also we devise a model selection procedure. We compute the value of γ which is 0.5, when all the processes are Markovian. This result is valid for any family of finite order Markov models but for simplicity we will focus on the family of variable length Markov chains.

This study takes up inference in linear models with generalized error and generalized t distributions. For the generalized error distribution, two computational algorithms are proposed. The first is based on indirect Bayesian inference using an approximating finite scale mixture of normal distributions. The second is based on Gibbs sampling. The Gibbs sampler involves only drawing random numbers from standard distributions. This is important because previously the impression has been that an exact analysis of the generalized error regression model using Gibbs sampling is not possible. Next, we describe computational Bayesian inference for linear models with generalized t disturbances based on Gibbs sampling, and exploiting the fact that the model is a mixture of generalized error distributions with inverse generalized gamma distributions for the scale parameter. The linear model with this specification has also been thought not to be amenable to exact Bayesian analysis. All computational methods are applied to actual data involving the exchange rates of the British pound, the French franc, and the German mark relative to the U.S. dollar.

In this article, we propose a new class of models—jump-diffusion models with M jumps (JD(M)J). These structures generalize the discretized arithmetic Brownian motion (for logarithmic rates of return) and the Bernoulli jump-diffusion model. The aim of this article is to present Bayesian tools for estimation and comparison of JD(M)J models. Presented methodology is illustrated with two empirical studies, employing both simulated and real-world data (the S&P100 Index).

Although Cox proportional hazards regression is the default analysis for time to event data, there is typically uncertainty about whether the effects of a predictor are more appropriately characterized by a multiplicative or additive model. To accommodate this uncertainty, we place a model selection prior on the coefficients in an additive-multiplicative hazards model. This prior assigns positive probability, not only to the model that has both additive and multiplicative effects for each predictor, but also to sub-models corresponding to no association, to only additive effects, and to only proportional effects. The additive component of the model is constrained to ensure non-negative hazards, a condition often violated by current methods. After augmenting the data with Poisson latent variables, the prior is conditionally conjugate, and posterior computation can proceed via an efficient Gibbs sampling algorithm. Simulation study results are presented, and the methodology is illustrated using data from the Framingham heart study.

In this paper Bayesian methods are applied to a stochastic volatility model using both the prices of the asset and the prices of options written on the asset. Posterior densities for all model parameters, latent volatilities and the market price of volatility risk are produced via a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling algorithm. Candidate draws for the unobserved volatilities are obtained in blocks by applying the Kalman filter and simulation smoother to a linearization of a nonlinear state space representation of the model. Crucially, information from both the spot and option prices affects the draws via the specification of a bivariate measurement equation, with implied Black-Scholes volatilities used to proxy observed option prices in the candidate model. Alternative models nested within the Heston (1993) framework are ranked via posterior odds ratios, as well as via fit, predictive and hedging performance. The method is illustrated using Australian News Corporation spot and option price data.

In this article, we assess Bayesian estimation and prediction using integrated Laplace approximation (INLA) on a stochastic volatility (SV) model. This was performed through a Monte Carlo study with 1,000 simulated time series. To evaluate the estimation method, two criteria were considered: the bias and square root of the mean square error (smse). The criteria used for prediction are the one step ahead forecast of volatility and the one day Value at Risk (VaR). The main findings are that the INLA approximations are fairly accurate and relatively robust to the choice of prior distribution on the persistence parameter. Additionally, VaR estimates are computed and compared for three financial time series returns indexes.

Abstract.  Methodology for Bayesian inference is considered for a stochastic epidemic model which permits mixing on both local and global scales. Interest focuses on estimation of the within- and between-group transmission rates given data on the final outcome. The model is sufficiently complex that the likelihood of the data is numerically intractable. To overcome this difficulty, an appropriate latent variable is introduced, about which asymptotic information is known as the population size tends to infinity. This yields a method for approximate inference for the true model. The methods are applied to real data, tested with simulated data, and also applied to a simple epidemic model for which exact results are available for comparison.

In this article, Bayesian inference for the half-normal and half-t distributions using uninformative priors is considered. It is shown that exact Bayesian inference can be undertaken for the half-normal distribution without the need for Gibbs sampling. Simulation is then used to compare the sampling properties of Bayesian point and interval estimators with those of their maximum likelihood based counterparts. Inference for the half-t distribution based on the use of Gibbs sampling is outlined, and an approach to model comparison based on the use of Bayes factors is discussed. The fitting of the half-normal and half-t models is illustrated using real data on the body fat measurements of elite athletes.
