We propose a sequential test for predictive ability for recursively assessing whether some economic variables have explanatory content for another variable. In the forecasting literature it is common to assess predictive ability by using “one-shot” tests at each estimation period. We show that this practice leads to size distortions, selects overfitted models and provides spurious evidence of in-sample predictive ability, and may lower the forecast accuracy of the model selected by the test. The usefulness of the proposed test is shown in well-known empirical applications to the real-time predictive content of money for output and the selection between linear and nonlinear models.  相似文献

We present a Bayesian forecasting methodology of discrete-time finite state-space hidden Markov models with non-constant transition matrix that depends on a set of exogenous covariates. We describe an MCMC reversible jump algorithm for predictive inference, allowing for model uncertainty regarding the set of covariates that affect the transition matrix. We apply our models to interest rates and we show that our general model formulation improves the predictive ability of standard homogeneous hidden Markov models.  相似文献

新冠肺炎疫情不仅对我国宏观经济造成了巨大冲击,也为准确预测我国宏观经济未来走势带来挑战。本文从新冠肺炎疫情冲击出发,将模型置信集检验与U-MIDAS模型组合,设计了一种在混频情形下利用预测变量的异质性波动从大维数据集中选取对GDP具有稳定预测效果变量的方法。通过利用选取出的稳定性变量构建多种形式的混频目标因子模型并与其他类型的混频因子模型对比,全面评估了不同模型在疫情前后对GDP进行高频现时预测的效果。研究发现,在疫情冲击前的平稳时期,利用覆盖范围较广的变量构建双因子MIDAS模型预测效果最优;利用稳定性变量构建的单因子U-MIDAS模型同样具有良好的预测效果。当经济从冲击中持续恢复时,利用部分稳定性变量构建的双因子U-MIDAS模型在捕捉到GDP的核心变化后率先对其连续做出准确的现时预测。经济稳定时,对预测变量设定较长的滞后阶数会提升预测效果;在冲击后的恢复期中则应减少滞后阶数,避免变量在冲击中出现的异常值对预测产生负面影响。本文也为当经济受到巨大外生冲击或处于冲击后的恢复期时其他宏观经济指标的预测提供了有价值的参考。  相似文献

We compare different approaches to accounting for parameter instability in the context of macroeconomic forecasting models that assume either small, frequent changes versus models whose parameters exhibit large, rare changes. An empirical out-of-sample forecasting exercise for U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) growth and inflation suggests that models that allow for parameter instability generate more accurate density forecasts than constant-parameter models although they fail to produce better point forecasts. Model combinations deliver similar gains in predictive performance although they fail to improve on the predictive accuracy of the single best model, which is a specification that allows for time-varying parameters and stochastic volatility. This paper introduces a novel sequential approach for online surveillance of the equal predictive ability (EPA) hypothesis presumed to hold for many competing forecasting models. A nonparametric control chart is suggested for providing a decision at every new time point as to whether the EPA hypothesis remains valid. The detection ability of our procedure is evaluated in a Monte Carlo simulation study for various types of deviations from the EPA hypothesis. Our approach enables the quick detection of various shift types, is parsimonious, and robust to misspecifications. Based on these results, we formulate practical recommendations for procedure design.  相似文献

This article considers in-sample prediction and out-of-sample forecasting in regressions with many exogenous predictors. We consider four dimension-reduction devices: principal components, ridge, Landweber Fridman, and partial least squares. We derive rates of convergence for two representative models: an ill-posed model and an approximate factor model. The theory is developed for a large cross-section and a large time-series. As all these methods depend on a tuning parameter to be selected, we also propose data-driven selection methods based on cross-validation and establish their optimality. Monte Carlo simulations and an empirical application to forecasting inflation and output growth in the U.S. show that data-reduction methods outperform conventional methods in several relevant settings, and might effectively guard against instabilities in predictors’ forecasting ability.  相似文献

The use of GARCH type models and computational-intelligence-based techniques for forecasting financial time series has been proved extremely successful in recent times. In this article, we apply the finite mixture of ARMA-GARCH model instead of AR or ARMA models to compare with the standard BP and SVM in forecasting financial time series (daily stock market index returns and exchange rate returns). We do not apply the pure GARCH model as the finite mixture of the ARMA-GARCH model outperforms the pure GARCH model. These models are evaluated on five performance metrics or criteria. Our experiment shows that the SVM model outperforms both the finite mixture of ARMA-GARCH and BP models in deviation performance criteria. In direction performance criteria, the finite mixture of ARMA-GARCH model performs better. The memory property of these forecasting techniques is also examined using the behavior of forecasted values vis-à-vis the original values. Only the SVM model shows long memory property in forecasting financial returns.  相似文献

The Box–Jenkins methodology for modeling and forecasting from univariate time series models has long been considered a standard to which other forecasting techniques have been compared. To a Bayesian statistician, however, the method lacks an important facet—a provision for modeling uncertainty about parameter estimates. We present a technique called sampling the future for including this feature in both the estimation and forecasting stages. Although it is relatively easy to use Bayesian methods to estimate the parameters in an autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model, there are severe difficulties in producing forecasts from such a model. The multiperiod predictive density does not have a convenient closed form, so approximations are needed. In this article, exact Bayesian forecasting is approximated by simulating the joint predictive distribution. First, parameter sets are randomly generated from the joint posterior distribution. These are then used to simulate future paths of the time series. This bundle of many possible realizations is used to project the future in several ways. Highest probability forecast regions are formed and portrayed with computer graphics. The predictive density's shape is explored. Finally, we discuss a method that allows the analyst to subjectively modify the posterior distribution on the parameters and produce alternate forecasts.  相似文献

We compare the DSGE model and a few variants of this model to various reduced-form forecasting models such as vector autoregressions (VARs) and vector error correction models (VECM), estimated both by maximum likelihood and two different Bayesian approaches, and traditional benchmark models, e.g., the random walk. The accuracy of point forecasts, interval forecasts and the predictive distribution as a whole are assessed in an out-of-sample rolling event evaluation using several univariate and multivariate measures. The results show that the open economy DSGE model compares well with more empirical models and thus that the tension between rigor and fit in older generations of DSGE models is no longer present. We also critically examine the role of Bayesian model probabilities and other frequently used low-dimensional summaries, e.g., the log determinant statistic, as measures of overall forecasting performance.  相似文献

When facing any forecasting problem not only is accuracy on the predictions sought. Also, useful information about the underlying physics of the process and about the relevance of the forecasting variables is very much appreciated. In this paper, it is presented an automatic specification procedure for models that are based on additivity assumptions and piecewise linear regression. This procedure allows the analyst to gain insight about the problem by examining the automatically selected model, thus easily checking the validity of the forecast. Monte Carlo simulations have been run to ensure that the model selection procedure behaves correctly under weakly dependent data. Moreover, comparison over other well-known methodologies has been done to evaluate its accuracy performance, both in simulated data and in the context of short-term natural gas demand forecasting. Empirical results show that the accuracy of the proposed model is competitive against more complex methods such as neural networks.  相似文献

A long-standing puzzle in macroeconomic forecasting has been that a wide variety of multivariate models have struggled to out-predict univariate models consistently. We seek an explanation for this puzzle in terms of population properties. We derive bounds for the predictive R2 of the true, but unknown, multivariate model from univariate ARMA parameters alone. These bounds can be quite tight, implying little forecasting gain even if we knew the true multivariate model. We illustrate using CPI inflation data. 信息沟通有助于公众理解和预测货币政策的实际干预,进而提高货币政策有效性。研究中国人民银行的信息沟通对实际政策干预的预测能力需要解决沟通文本的测度问题,同时考虑实际政策干预多工具并用的复杂性。基于此,本文通过文本分析方法提取《货币政策执行报告》的信息,进而考察央行沟通对于货币政策实际干预的预测能力。研究表明,整体而言,市场对中国人民银行“听其言”有助于“观其行”。具体来看,央行沟通对于直接可控的基准利率和存款准备金率具有持续的预测能力,但对于市场利率的预测能力较差,对于M2增长率的预测甚至存在方向不一致的情况。  相似文献

Abstract

An improved forecasting model by merging two different computational models in predicting future volatility was proposed. The model integrates wavelet and EGARCH model where the pre-processing activity based on wavelet transform is performed with de-noising technique to eliminate noise in observed signal. The denoised signal is then feed into EGARCH model to forecast the volatility. The predictive capability of the proposed model is compared with the existing EGARCH model. The results show that the hybrid model has increased the accuracy of forecasting future volatility.  相似文献

While the predictability of excess stock returns is detected by traditional predictive regressions as statistically small, the direction-of-change and volatility of returns exhibit a substantially larger degree of dependence over time. We capitalize on this observation and decompose the returns into a product of sign and absolute value components whose joint distribution is obtained by combining a multiplicative error model for absolute values, a dynamic binary choice model for signs, and a copula for their interaction. Our decomposition model is able to incorporate important nonlinearities in excess return dynamics that cannot be captured in the standard predictive regression setup. The empirical analysis of U.S. stock return data shows statistically and economically significant forecasting gains of the decomposition model over the conventional predictive regression.  相似文献

This article presents the goodness-of-fit tests for the Laplace distribution based on its maximum entropy characterization result. The critical values of the test statistics estimated by Monte Carlo simulations are tabulated for various window and sample sizes. The test statistics use an entropy estimator depending on the window size; so, the choice of the optimal window size is an important problem. The window sizes for yielding the maximum power of the tests are given for selected sample sizes. Power studies are performed to compare the proposed tests with goodness-of-fit tests based on the empirical distribution function. Simulation results report that entropy-based tests have consistently higher power than EDF tests against almost all alternatives considered.  相似文献

We provide an application of a variety of predicting densities to quality control involving multivariate normal linear models. We produce optimal control designs for single muleivaiiate future observations using predicting densities employing estimative, profile likelihood, Hinkley-Lauritzen, Butler, Bayesian, and Parametric Bootstrap methodologies. The decision-theoretic optimality criterion is an intuitively appealing quadratic consumer-producer risk function. The optimal control design arising from an optimal Kullback-Leibler frequentist prediction density is shown to coincide with that arising from an optimal Kullback-Leibler Bayesian predictive density. An example involving EVOP is provided to illustrate the methodology and to raise questions concerning the relative merics of the variety of predictive approaches in the quality control context.  相似文献

We provide a comprehensive analysis of the out-of-sample performance of a wide variety of spot rate models in forecasting the probability density of future interest rates. Although the most parsimonious models perform best in forecasting the conditional mean of many financial time series, we find that the spot rate models that incorporate conditional heteroscedasticity and excess kurtosis or heavy tails have better density forecasts. Generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity significantly improves the modeling of the conditional variance and kurtosis, whereas regime switching and jumps improve the modeling of the marginal density of interest rates. Our analysis shows that the sophisticated spot rate models in the existing literature are important for applications involving density forecasts of interest rates.  相似文献

Traffic flow data are routinely collected for many networks worldwide. These invariably large data sets can be used as part of a traffic management system, for which good traffic flow forecasting models are crucial. The linear multiregression dynamic model (LMDM) has been shown to be promising for forecasting flows, accommodating multivariate flow time series, while being a computationally simple model to use. While statistical flow forecasting models usually base their forecasts on flow data alone, data for other traffic variables are also routinely collected. This paper shows how cubic splines can be used to incorporate extra variables into the LMDM in order to enhance flow forecasts. Cubic splines are also introduced into the LMDM to parsimoniously accommodate the daily cycle exhibited by traffic flows. The proposed methodology allows the LMDM to provide more accurate forecasts when forecasting flows in a real high‐dimensional traffic data set. The resulting extended LMDM can deal with some important traffic modelling issues not usually considered in flow forecasting models. Additionally, the model can be implemented in a real‐time environment, a crucial requirement for traffic management systems designed to support decisions and actions to alleviate congestion and keep traffic flowing.  相似文献

A stationary bilinear (SB) model can be used to describe processes with a time-varying degree of persistence that depends on past shocks. This study develops methods for Bayesian inference, model comparison, and forecasting in the SB model. Using monthly U.K. inflation data, we find that the SB model outperforms the random walk, first-order autoregressive AR(1), and autoregressive moving average ARMA(1,1) models in terms of root mean squared forecast errors. In addition, the SB model is superior to these three models in terms of predictive likelihood for the majority of forecast observations.  相似文献
