The skew-normal and the skew-t distributions are parametric families which are currently under intense investigation since they provide a more flexible formulation compared to the classical normal and t distributions by introducing a parameter which regulates their skewness. While these families enjoy attractive formal properties from the probability viewpoint, a practical problem with their usage in applications is the possibility that the maximum likelihood estimate of the parameter which regulates skewness diverges. This situation has vanishing probability for increasing sample size, but for finite samples it occurs with non-negligible probability, and its occurrence has unpleasant effects on the inferential process. Methods for overcoming this problem have been put forward both in the classical and in the Bayesian formulation, but their applicability is restricted to simple situations. We formulate a proposal based on the idea of penalized likelihood, which has connections with some of the existing methods, but it applies more generally, including the multivariate case.  相似文献

The problem of estimation of parameters in hazard rate models with a change-point is considered. An interesting feature of this problem is that the likelihood function is unbounded. We show that for a class of penalty functions, finding the global optimizer in the penalized least-squares estimation is equivalent to the ‘exact cover by 3-sets’ problem, which belongs to a class of NP-hard problems. The NP-hardness result is then extended to the cases of penalized least absolute deviations regression and a special class of penalized support vector machines. We discuss its implication in statistics. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first formal documentation on the complexity of this type of problem.  相似文献

This article introduces a novel non parametric penalized likelihood hazard estimation when the censoring time is dependent on the failure time for each subject under observation. More specifically, we model this dependence using a copula, and the method of maximum penalized likelihood (MPL) is adopted to estimate the hazard function. We do not consider covariates in this article. The non negatively constrained MPL hazard estimation is obtained using a multiplicative iterative algorithm. The consistency results and the asymptotic properties of the proposed hazard estimator are derived. The simulation studies show that our MPL estimator under dependent censoring with an assumed copula model provides a better accuracy than the MPL estimator under independent censoring if the sign of dependence is correctly specified in the copula function. The proposed method is applied to a real dataset, with a sensitivity analysis performed over various values of correlation between failure and censoring times.  相似文献

The authors consider a formulation of penalized likelihood regression that is sufficiently general to cover canonical and noncanonical links for exponential families as well as accelerated life models with censored survival data. They present an asymptotic analysis of convergence rates to justify a simple approach to the lower‐dimensional approximation of the estimates. Such an approximation allows for much faster numerical calculation, paving the way to the development of algorithms that scale well with large data sets.  相似文献

Unobservable individual effects in models of duration will cause estimation bias that include the structural parameters as well as the duration dependence. The maximum penalized likelihood estimator is examined as an estimator for the survivor model with heterogeneity. Proofs of the existence and uniqueness of the maximum penalized likelihood estimator in duration model with general forms of unobserved heterogeneity are provided. Some small sample evidence on the behavior of the maximum penalized likelihood estimator is given. The maximum penalized likelihood estimator is shown to be computationally feasible and to provide reasonable estimates in most cases.  相似文献

We address the issue of performing inference on the parameters that index the modified extended Weibull (MEW) distribution. We show that numerical maximization of the MEW log-likelihood function can be problematic. It is even possible to encounter maximum likelihood estimates that are not finite, that is, it is possible to encounter monotonic likelihood functions. We consider different penalization schemes to improve maximum likelihood point estimation. A penalization scheme based on the Jeffreys’ invariant prior is shown to be particularly useful. Simulation results on point estimation, interval estimation, and hypothesis testing inference are presented. Two empirical applications are presented and discussed.  相似文献

Based on the inverse probability weight method, we, in this article, construct the empirical likelihood (EL) and penalized empirical likelihood (PEL) ratios of the parameter in the linear quantile regression model when the covariates are missing at random, in the presence and absence of auxiliary information, respectively. It is proved that the EL ratio admits a limiting Chi-square distribution. At the same time, the asymptotic normality of the maximum EL and PEL estimators of the parameter is established. Also, the variable selection of the model in the presence and absence of auxiliary information, respectively, is discussed. Simulation study and a real data analysis are done to evaluate the performance of the proposed methods.  相似文献

Abstract

In this article, we propose a penalized local log-likelihood method to locally select the number of components in non parametric finite mixture of regression models via proportion shrinkage method. Mean functions and variance functions are estimated simultaneously. We show that the number of components can be estimated consistently, and further establish asymptotic normality of functional estimates. We use a modified EM algorithm to estimate the unknown functions. Simulations are conducted to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method. We illustrate our method via an empirical analysis of the housing price index data of United States.  相似文献

The likelihood function from a large sample is commonly assumed to be approximately a normal density function. The literature supports, under mild conditions, an approximate normal shape about the maximum; but typically a stronger result is needed: that the normalized likelihood itself is approximately a normal density. In a transformation-parameter context, we consider the likelihood normalized relative to right-invariant measure, and in the location case under moderate conditions show that the standardized version converges almost surely to the standard normal. Also in a transformation-parameter context, we show that almost sure convergence of the normalized and standardized likelihood to a standard normal implies that the standardized distribution for conditional inference converges almost surely to a corresponding standard normal. This latter result is of immediate use for a range of estimating, testing, and confidence procedures on a conditional-inference basis.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a new iterative sparse algorithm (ISA) to compute the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) or penalized MLE of the mixed effects model. The sparse approximation based on the arrow-head (A-H) matrix is one solution which is popularly used in practice. The A-H method provides an easy computation of the inverse of the Hessian matrix and is computationally efficient. However, it often has non-negligible error in approximating the inverse of the Hessian matrix and in the estimation. Unlike the A-H method, in the ISA, the sparse approximation is applied “iteratively” to reduce the approximation error at each Newton Raphson step. The advantages of the ISA over the exact and A-H method are illustrated using several synthetic and real examples.  相似文献

We study the problem of selecting a regularization parameter in penalized Gaussian graphical models. When the goal is to obtain a model with good predictive power, cross-validation is the gold standard. We present a new estimator of Kullback–Leibler loss in Gaussian Graphical models which provides a computationally fast alternative to cross-validation. The estimator is obtained by approximating leave-one-out-cross-validation. Our approach is demonstrated on simulated data sets for various types of graphs. The proposed formula exhibits superior performance, especially in the typical small sample size scenario, compared to other available alternatives to cross-validation, such as Akaike's information criterion and Generalized approximate cross-validation. We also show that the estimator can be used to improve the performance of the Bayesian information criterion when the sample size is small.  相似文献

We introduce a new class of flexible hazard rate distributions which have constant, increasing, decreasing, and bathtub-shaped hazard function. This class of distributions obtained by compounding the power and exponential hazard rate functions, which is called the power-exponential hazard rate distribution and contains several important lifetime distributions. We obtain some distributional properties of the new family of distributions. The estimation of parameters is obtained by using the maximum likelihood and the Bayesian methods under squared error, linear-exponential, and Stein’s loss functions. Also, approximate confidence intervals and HPD credible intervals of parameters are presented. An application to real dataset is provided to show that the new hazard rate distribution has a better fit than the other existing hazard rate distributions and some four-parameter distributions. Finally , to compare the performance of proposed estimators and confidence intervals, an extensive Monte Carlo simulation study is conducted.  相似文献

We describe a set of procedures that automate many algebraic calculations common in statistical asymptotic theory. The procedures are very general and serve to unify the study of likelihood and likelihood type functions. The procedures emulate techniques one would normally carry out by hand; this strategy is emphasised throughout the paper. The purpose of the software is to provide a practical alternative to difficult manual algebraic computations. The result is a method that is quick and free of clerical error.  相似文献

A warping is a function that deforms images by mapping between image domains. The choice of function is formulated statistically as maximum penalized likelihood, where the likelihood measures the similarity between images after warping and the penalty is a measure of distortion of a warping. The paper addresses two issues simultaneously, of how to choose the warping function and how to assess the alignment. A new, Fourier–von Mises image model is identified, with phase differences between Fourier-transformed images having von Mises distributions. Also, new, null set distortion criteria are proposed, with each criterion uniquely minimized by a particular set of polynomial functions. A conjugate gradient algorithm is used to estimate the warping function, which is numerically approximated by a piecewise bilinear function. The method is motivated by, and used to solve, three applied problems: to register a remotely sensed image with a map, to align microscope images obtained by using different optics and to discriminate between species of fish from photographic images.  相似文献

The choice of the summary statistics in approximate maximum likelihood is often a crucial issue. We develop a criterion for choosing the most effective summary statistic and then focus on the empirical characteristic function. In the iid setting, the approximating posterior distribution converges to the approximate distribution of the parameters conditional upon the empirical characteristic function. Simulation experiments suggest that the method is often preferable to numerical maximum likelihood. In a time-series framework, no optimality result can be proved, but the simulations indicate that the method is effective in small samples.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

When a distribution function is in the max domain of attraction of an extreme value distribution, its tail can be well approximated by a generalized Pareto distribution. Based on this fact we use a moment estimation idea to propose an adapted maximum likelihood estimator for the extreme value index, which can be understood as a combination of the maximum likelihood estimation and moment estimation. Under certain regularity conditions, we derive the asymptotic normality of the new estimator and investigate its finite sample behavior by comparing with several classical or competitive estimators. A simulation study shows that the new estimator is competitive with other estimators in view of average bias, average MSE, and coefficient of variance of the new device for the optimal selection of the threshold.  相似文献

Abstract

In this paper we find the maximum likelihood estimates (MLEs) of hazard rate and mean residual life functions (MRLF) of Pareto distribution, their asymptotic non degenerate distribution, exact distribution and moments. We also discuss the uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimate (UMVUE) of hazard rate function and MRLF.
