In stratified sampling, methods for the allocation of effort among strata usually rely on some measure of within-stratum variance. If we do not have enough information about these variances, adaptive allocation can be used. In adaptive allocation designs, surveys are conducted in two phases. Information from the first phase is used to allocate the remaining units among the strata in the second phase. Brown et al. [Adaptive two-stage sequential sampling, Popul. Ecol. 50 (2008), pp. 239–245] introduced an adaptive allocation sampling design – where the final sample size was random – and an unbiased estimator. Here, we derive an unbiased variance estimator for the design, and consider a related design where the final sample size is fixed. Having a fixed final sample size can make survey-planning easier. We introduce a biased Horvitz–Thompson type estimator and a biased sample mean type estimator for the sampling designs. We conduct two simulation studies on honey producers in Kurdistan and synthetic zirconium distribution in a region on the moon. Results show that the introduced estimators are more efficient than the available estimators for both variable and fixed sample size designs, and the conventional unbiased estimator of stratified simple random sampling design. In order to evaluate efficiencies of the introduced designs and their estimator furthermore, we first review some well-known adaptive allocation designs and compare their estimator with the introduced estimators. Simulation results show that the introduced estimators are more efficient than available estimators of these well-known adaptive allocation designs.  相似文献

Recently, Shabbir and Gupta [Shabbir, J. and Gupta, S. (2011). On estimating finite population mean in simple and stratified random sampling. Communications in Statistics-Theory and Methods, 40(2), 199–212] defined a class of ratio type exponential estimators of population mean under a very specific linear transformation of auxiliary variable. In the present article, we propose a generalized class of ratio type exponential estimators of population mean in simple random sampling under a very general linear transformation of auxiliary variable. Shabbir and Gupta's [Shabbir, J. and Gupta, S. (2011). On estimating finite population mean in simple and stratified random sampling. Communications in Statistics-Theory and Methods, 40(2), 199–212] class of estimators is a particular member of our proposed class of estimators. It has been found that the optimal estimator of our proposed generalized class of estimators is always more efficient than almost all the existing estimators defined under the same situations. Moreover, in comparison to a few existing estimators, our proposed estimator becomes more efficient under some simple conditions. Theoretical results obtained in the article have been verified by taking a numerical illustration. Finally, a simulation study has been carried out to see the relative performance of our proposed estimator with respect to some existing estimators which are less efficient under certain conditions as compared to the proposed estimator.  相似文献

We propose separate ratio estimators for population variance in stratified random sampling. We obtain mean square error equations and compare proposed estimators about efficiency with each other. By these comparisons, we find the conditions which make proposed estimators more efficient than others. It has been shown that proposed classes of estimators are more efficient than usual unbiased estimator. We find that separate ratio estimators are more efficient than combined ratio estimators for population variance. The theoretical results are supported by a numerical illustration with original data. A simulation study is also carried out to investigate empirical performance of estimators.  相似文献

Abstract

In the present article, an effort has been made to develop calibration estimators of the population mean under two-stage stratified random sampling design when auxiliary information is available at primary stage unit (psu) level. The properties of the developed estimators are derived in-terms of design based approximate variance and approximate consistent design based estimator of the variance. Some simulation studies have been conducted to investigate the relative performance of calibration estimator over the usual estimator of the population mean without using auxiliary information in two-stage stratified random sampling. Proposed calibration estimators have outperformed the usual estimator without using auxiliary information.  相似文献

The problem of estimating the Poisson mean is considered based on the two samples in the presence of uncertain prior information (not in the form of distribution) that two independent random samples taken from two possibly identical Poisson populations. The parameter of interest is λ1 from population I. Three estimators, i.e. the unrestricted estimator, restricted estimator and preliminary test estimator are proposed. Their asymptotic mean squared errors are derived and compared; parameter regions have been found for which restricted and preliminary test estimators are always asymptotically more efficient than the classical estimator. The relative dominance picture of the estimators is presented. Maximum and minimum asymptotic efficiencies of the estimators relative to the classical estimator are tabulated. A max-min rule for the size of the preliminary test is also discussed. A Monte Carlo study is presented to compare the performance of the estimator with that of Kale and Bancroft (1967).  相似文献

Adaptive allocations in stratified sampling design are suitable for studying Biological and Environmental populations. Biologists tend to use the conventional stratified estimator for an adaptive allocation sampling design in spite of its adaptive nature. In this paper, we have introduced an adaptive allocation sampling design for which the conventional stratified estimator has some desired statistical properties. We conduct a simulation study on a real population. The results show that the conventional stratified estimator for the introduced adaptive allocation sampling design is more efficient than other available estimators.  相似文献

Summary In this paper we have suggested two modified estimators of population mean using power transformation. It has been shown that the modified estimators are more efficient than the sample mean estimator, usual ratio estimator, Sisodia and Dwivedi’s (1981) estimator and Upadhyaya and Singh’s (1999) estimator at their optimum conditions. Empirical illustrations are also given for examining the merits of the proposed estimators. Following Kadilar and Cingi (2003) the work has been extended to stratified random sampling, and the same data set has been studied to examine the performance in stratified random sampling.  相似文献

We consider a variance estimation when a stratified single stage cluster sample is selected in the first phase and a stratified simple random element sample is selected in the second phase. We propose explicit formulas of (asymptotically), we propose explicit formulas of (asymptotically) unbiased variance estimators for the double expansion estimator and regression estimator. We perform a small simulation study to investigate the performance of the proposed variance estimators. In our simulation study, the proposed variance estimator showed better or comparable performance to the Jackknife variance estimator. We also extend the results to a two-phase sampling design in which a stratified pps with replacement cluster sample is selected in the first phase.  相似文献

This study proposes a more efficient calibration estimator for estimating population mean in stratified double sampling using new calibration weights. The variance of the proposed calibration estimator has been derived under large sample approximation. Calibration asymptotic optimum estimator and its approximate variance estimator are derived for the proposed calibration estimator and existing calibration estimators in stratified double sampling. Analytical results showed that the proposed calibration estimator is more efficient than existing members of its class in stratified double sampling. Analysis and evaluation are presented.  相似文献

The use of robust measures helps to increase the precision of the estimators, especially for the estimation of extremely skewed distributions. In this article, a generalized ratio estimator is proposed by using some robust measures with single auxiliary variable under the adaptive cluster sampling (ACS) design. We have incorporated tri-mean (TM), mid-range (MR) and Hodges-Lehman (HL) of the auxiliary variable as robust measures together with some conventional measures. The expressions of bias and mean square error (MSE) of the proposed generalized ratio estimator are derived. Two types of numerical study have been conducted using artificial clustered population and real data application to examine the performance of the proposed estimator over the usual mean per unit estimator under simple random sampling (SRS). Related results of the simulation study show that the proposed estimators provide better estimation results on both real and artificial population over the competing estimators.  相似文献

We propose an improved difference-cum-exponential ratio type estimator for estimating the finite population mean in simple and stratified random sampling using two auxiliary variables. We obtain properties of the estimators up to first order of approximation. The proposed class of estimators is found to be more efficient than the usual sample mean estimator, ratio estimator, exponential ratio type estimator, usual two difference type estimators, Rao (1991) estimator, Gupta and Shabbir (2008) estimator, and Grover and Kaur (2011) estimator. We use six real data sets in simple random sampling and two in stratified sampling for numerical comparisons.  相似文献

In this paper we present a class of ratio type estimators of the population mean and ratio in a finite population sample surveys with without replacement simple random sampling design, where information on an auxiliary variate x positively correlated with the main variate y is available. Large sample approximations to mean square errors (MSE) of these estimatorsare evaluated and their MSE's are compared with the MSE of the usual ratio estimator [ybar]R of [ybar] the population mean of y. It is shown that under certain conditions these estimators are more efficient than [ybar]R. When a prior knowledge of the value of thecoefficient of variation, cy, of y is at hand, ratio type estimator, say [ybar]1 of [ybar] is proposed. It is shown, under certain conditions, that [ybar]1 is more efficient than [ybar]R. When values of cy, cx and the population correlation coefficient ρ is at hand, then we have proposed another estimator, say [ybar]2 of [ybar], which is always better than [ybar]R as far as the efficiency is concerned. In fact, is [ybar] 2 is shown to be even better than [ybar]1. Finally estimators better than the usual ratio estimator [ybar]/[xbar] of [Ybar] are given.  相似文献

In this paper, a new estimator combined estimator (CE) is proposed for estimating the finite population mean ¯ Y N in simple random sampling assuming a long-tailed symmetric super-population model. The efficiency and robustness properties of the CE is compared with the widely used and well-known estimators of the finite population mean ¯ Y N by Monte Carlo simulation. The parameter estimators considered in this study are the classical least squares estimator, trimmed mean, winsorized mean, trimmed L-mean, modified maximum-likelihood estimator, Huber estimator (W24) and the non-parametric Hodges–Lehmann estimator. The mean square error criteria are used to compare the performance of the estimators. We show that the CE is overall more efficient than the other estimators. The CE is also shown to be more robust for estimating the finite population mean ¯ Y N , since it is insensitive to outliers and to misspecification of the distribution. We give a real life example.  相似文献

In this article, a chain ratio-product type exponential estimator is proposed for estimating finite population mean in stratified random sampling with two auxiliary variables under double sampling design. Theoretical and empirical results show that the proposed estimator is more efficient than the existing estimators, i.e., usual stratified random sample mean estimator, Chand (1975) chain ratio estimator, Choudhary and Singh (2012) estimator, chain ratio-product-type estimator, Sahoo et al. (1993) difference type estimator, and Kiregyera (1984) regression-type estimator. Two data sets are used to illustrate the performances of different estimators.  相似文献

Abstract

In environmental monitoring and assessment, the main focus is to achieve observational economy and to collect data with unbiased, efficient and cost-effective sampling methods. Ranked set sampling (RSS) is one traditional method that is mostly used for accomplishing observational economy. In this article, we propose an unbiased sampling scheme, named paired double RSS (PDRSS) for estimating the population mean. We study the performance of the mean estimators under PDRSS based on perfect and imperfect rankings. It is shown that, for perfect ranking, the variance of the mean estimator under PDRSS is always less than the variance of mean estimator based on simple random sampling, paired RSS and RSS. The mean estimators under RSS, median RSS, PDRSS, and double RSS are also compared with the regression estimator of population mean based on SRS. The procedure is also illustrated with a case study using a real data set.  相似文献

We present a multi-level rotation sampling design which includes most of the existing rotation designs as special cases. When an estimator is defined under this sampling design, its variance and bias remain the same over survey months, but it is not so under other existing rotation designs. Using the properties of this multi-level rotation design, we derive the mean squared error (MSE) of the generalized composite estimator (GCE), incorporating the two types of correlations arising from rotating sample units. We show that the MSEs of other existing composite estimators currently used can be expressed as special cases of the GCE. Furthermore, since the coefficients of the GCE are unknown and difficult to determine, we present the minimum risk window estimator (MRWE) as an alternative estimator. This MRWE has the smallest MSE under this rotation design and yet, it is easy to calculate. The MRWE is unbiased for monthly and yearly changes and preserves the internal consistency in total. Our numerical study shows that the MRWE is as efficient as GCE and more efficient than the existing composite estimators and does not suffer from the drift problem [Fuller W.A., Rao J.N.K., 2001. A regression composite estimator with application to the Canadian Labour Force Survey. Surv. Methodol. 27 (2001) 45–51] unlike the regression composite estimators.  相似文献

In this paper, efficient class of estimators for population mean using two auxiliary variates is suggested. It has been shown that the suggested estimator is more efficient than usual unbiased estimator in stratified random sampling, usual ratio and product-type estimators, Tailor and Lone (2012 Tailor, R. and Lone, H. A. (2012). Separate ratio-cum- product estimators of finite population mean using auxiliary information. J. Rajasthan Stat. Assoc. 1(2):94102. [Google Scholar], 2014) estimators, and other considered estimators. The bias and mean-squared error of the suggested estimator are obtained up to the first degree of approximation. Conditions under which the suggested estimator is more efficient than other considered estimators are obtained. An empirical study has been carried out to demonstrate the performances of the suggested estimator.  相似文献

This paper investigates a biased regression approach to the preliminary estimation of the Box-Jenkins transfer function weights. Using statistical simulation to generate time series, 14 estimators (various OLS, ridge and principal components estimators) are compared in terms of MSE and standard error of the weight estimators. The estimators are investigated for different levels of multicollinearity, signal-to-noise ratio, number of independent variables, length of time series and number of lags included in the estimation. The results show that the ridge estimators nearly always give lower MSE than the OLS estimator, and in the computationally difficult cases give much lower MSE than the OLS estimator. The principal components estimators can give lower MSE than the OLS, but also higher values. All biased estimators nearly always give much lower estimated standard error than OLS when estimating the weights.  相似文献

In recent years, calibration estimation has become an important field of research in survey sampling. This paper proposes a new calibration estimator for the population mean in the presence of two auxiliary variables in stratified sampling. The theory of new calibration estimator is given and optimum calibration weights are derived. A simulation study is carried out to performance of the proposed calibration estimator over other existing calibration estimators. The results reveal that the proposed calibration estimators are more efficient than other existing calibration estimators in stratified sampling.  相似文献

In this paper, we suggest a class of estimators for estimating the population mean ? of the study variable Y using information on X?, the population mean of the auxiliary variable X using ranked set sampling envisaged by McIntyre [A method of unbiased selective sampling using ranked sets, Aust. J. Agric. Res. 3 (1952), pp. 385–390] and developed by Takahasi and Wakimoto [On unbiased estimates of the population mean based on the sample stratified by means of ordering, Ann. Inst. Statist. Math. 20 (1968), pp. 1–31]. The estimator reported by Kadilar et al. [Ratio estimator for the population mean using ranked set sampling, Statist. Papers 50 (2009), pp. 301–309] is identified as a member of the proposed class of estimators. The bias and the mean-squared error (MSE) of the proposed class of estimators are obtained. An asymptotically optimum estimator in the class is identified with its MSE formulae. To judge the merits of the suggested class of estimators over others, an empirical study is carried out.  相似文献
