Bayes estimation of the binomial parameter n based on a general prior distribution for n is studied. As special cases improper prior and Poisson prior (which is a natural choice) are considered, and formulae for the marginal and posterior distributions are obtained. It is shown that the assumption of improper priors in both p and n leads to implausible results.  相似文献

This paper describes a method due to Lindsey (1974a) for fitting different exponential family distributions for a single population to the same data, using Poisson log-linear modelling of the density or mass function. The method is extended to Efron's (1986) double exponential family, giving exact ML estimation of the two parameters not easily achievable directly. The problem of comparing the fit of the non-nested models is addressed by both Bayes and posterior Bayes factors (Aitkin, 1991). The latter allow direct comparisons of deviances from the fitted distributions.  相似文献

For the hierarchical Poisson and gamma model, we calculate the Bayes posterior estimator of the parameter of the Poisson distribution under Stein's loss function which penalizes gross overestimation and gross underestimation equally and the corresponding Posterior Expected Stein's Loss (PESL). We also obtain the Bayes posterior estimator of the parameter under the squared error loss and the corresponding PESL. Moreover, we obtain the empirical Bayes estimators of the parameter of the Poisson distribution with a conjugate gamma prior by two methods. In numerical simulations, we have illustrated: The two inequalities of the Bayes posterior estimators and the PESLs; the moment estimators and the Maximum Likelihood Estimators (MLEs) are consistent estimators of the hyperparameters; the goodness-of-fit of the model to the simulated data. The numerical results indicate that the MLEs are better than the moment estimators when estimating the hyperparameters. Finally, we exploit the attendance data on 314 high school juniors from two urban high schools to illustrate our theoretical studies.  相似文献

We consider testing hypotheses about a single Poisson mean. When prior information is not available, use of objective priors is of interest. We provide intrinsic priors based on the arithmetic intrinsic and fractional Bayes factors, and evaluate their characteristics.  相似文献

The problem of approximating an interval null or imprecise hypothesis test by a point null or precise hypothesis test under a Bayesian framework is considered. In the literature, some of the methods for solving this problem have used the Bayes factor for testing a point null and justified it as an approximation to the interval null. However, many authors recommend evaluating tests through the posterior odds, a Bayesian measure of evidence against the null hypothesis. It is of interest then to determine whether similar results hold when using the posterior odds as the primary measure of evidence. For the prior distributions under which the approximation holds with respect to the Bayes factor, it is shown that the posterior odds for testing the point null hypothesis does not approximate the posterior odds for testing the interval null hypothesis. In fact, in order to obtain convergence of the posterior odds, a number of restrictive conditions need to be placed on the prior structure. Furthermore, under a non-symmetrical prior setup, neither the Bayes factor nor the posterior odds for testing the imprecise hypothesis converges to the Bayes factor or posterior odds respectively for testing the precise hypothesis. To rectify this dilemma, it is shown that constraints need to be placed on the priors. In both situations, the class of priors constructed to ensure convergence of the posterior odds are not practically useful, thus questioning, from a Bayesian perspective, the appropriateness of point null testing in a problem better represented by an interval null. The theories developed are also applied to an epidemiological data set from White et al. (Can. Veterinary J. 30 (1989) 147–149.) in order to illustrate and study priors for which the point null hypothesis test approximates the interval null hypothesis test. The problem of estimating a Poisson mean is considered using incomplete prior information. The user is only able to assess two fractiles of the prior distribution. A class of mixture distributions is constructed to model this prior information; variation within this class primarily occurs in the tail region where little prior information exists. The posterior analysis using the mixture class is attractive computationally and compares favorably with the conjugate posterior analysis.  相似文献

Given the first n successive occurence times from a non-homogeneous Poisson process with a power-law intensity function, Bayes prediction intervals for future observations are derived. A Bayesian approach is compared, via Monte Carlo simulation, with a classical one, taking into account several factors, such as prior information, sample size and true values of process parameters. It is found that the Bayesian procedure generally attains sensibly better performances even when there is little prior information available.  相似文献

Trimmed samples are commonly used in several branches of statistical methodology, especially when the presence of contaminated data is suspected. Assuming that certain proportions of the smallest and largest observations from a Weibull sample are unknown or have been eliminated, a Bayesian approach to point and interval estimation of the scale parameter, as well as hypothesis testing and prediction, is presented. In many cases, the use of substantial prior information can significantly increase the quality of the inferences and reduce the amount of testing required. Some Bayes estimators and predictors are derived in closed-forms. Highest posterior density estimators and credibility intervals can be computed using iterative methods. Bayes rules for testing one- and two-sided hypotheses are also provided. An illustrative numerical example is included.  相似文献

This article addresses the problem of testing whether the vectors of regression coefficients are equal for two independent normal regression models when the error variances are unknown. This problem poses severe difficulties both to the frequentist and Bayesian approaches to statistical inference. In the former approach, normal hypothesis testing theory does not apply because of the unrelated variances. In the latter, the prior distributions typically used for the parameters are improper and hence the Bayes factor-based solution cannot be used.We propose a Bayesian solution to this problem in which no subjective input is considered. We first generate “objective” proper prior distributions (intrinsic priors) for which the Bayes factor and model posterior probabilities are well defined. The posterior probability of each model is used as a model selection tool. This consistent procedure of testing hypotheses is compared with some of the frequentist approximate tests proposed in the literature.  相似文献

This paper presents the Bayesian analysis of a semiparametric regression model that consists of parametric and nonparametric components. The nonparametric component is represented with a Fourier series where the Fourier coefficients are assumed a priori to have zero means and to decay to 0 in probability at either algebraic or geometric rates. The rate of decay controls the smoothness of the response function. The posterior analysis automatically selects the amount of smoothing that is coherent with the model and data. Posterior probabilities of the parametric and semiparametric models provide a method for testing the parametric model against a non-specific alternative. The Bayes estimator's mean integrated squared error compares favourably with the theoretically optimal estimator for kernel regression.  相似文献

The term ‘small area’ or ‘small domain’ is commonly used to denote a small geographical area that has a small subpopulation of people within a large area. Small area estimation is an important area in survey sampling because of the growing demand for better statistical inference for small areas in public or private surveys. In small area estimation problems the focus is on how to borrow strength across areas in order to develop a reliable estimator and which makes use of available auxiliary information. Some traditional methods for small area problems such as empirical best linear unbiased prediction borrow strength through linear models that provide links to related areas, which may not be appropriate for some survey data. In this article, we propose a stepwise Bayes approach which borrows strength through an objective posterior distribution. This approach results in a generalized constrained Dirichlet posterior estimator when auxiliary information is available for small areas. The objective posterior distribution is based only on the assumption of exchangeability across related areas and does not make any explicit model assumptions. The form of our posterior distribution allows us to assign a weight to each member of the sample. These weights can then be used in a straight forward fashion to make inferences about the small area means. Theoretically, the stepwise Bayes character of the posterior allows one to prove the admissibility of the point estimators suggesting that inferential procedures based on this approach will tend to have good frequentist properties. Numerically, we demonstrate in simulations that the proposed stepwise Bayes approach can have substantial strengths compared to traditional methods.  相似文献

Recently, the field of multiple hypothesis testing has experienced a great expansion, basically because of the new methods developed in the field of genomics. These new methods allow scientists to simultaneously process thousands of hypothesis tests. The frequentist approach to this problem is made by using different testing error measures that allow to control the Type I error rate at a certain desired level. Alternatively, in this article, a Bayesian hierarchical model based on mixture distributions and an empirical Bayes approach are proposed in order to produce a list of rejected hypotheses that will be declared significant and interesting for a more detailed posterior analysis. In particular, we develop a straightforward implementation of a Gibbs sampling scheme where all the conditional posterior distributions are explicit. The results are compared with the frequentist False Discovery Rate (FDR) methodology. Simulation examples show that our model improves the FDR procedure in the sense that it diminishes the percentage of false negatives keeping an acceptable percentage of false positives.  相似文献

This paper synthesizes a global approach to both Bayesian and likelihood treatments of the estimation of the parameters of a hidden Markov model in the cases of normal and Poisson distributions. The first step of this global method is to construct a non-informative prior based on a reparameterization of the model; this prior is to be considered as a penalizing and bounding factor from a likelihood point of view. The second step takes advantage of the special structure of the posterior distribution to build up a simple Gibbs algorithm. The maximum likelihood estimator is then obtained by an iterative procedure replicating the original sample until the corresponding Bayes posterior expectation stabilizes on a local maximum of the original likelihood function.  相似文献

A compound class of zero truncated Poisson and lifetime distributions is introduced. A specialization is paved to a new three-parameter distribution, called doubly Poisson-exponential distribution, which may represent the lifetime of units connected in a series-parallel system. The new distribution can be obtained by compounding two zero truncated Poisson distributions with an exponential distribution. Among its motivations is that its hazard rate function can take different shapes such as decreasing, increasing and upside-down bathtub depending on the values of its parameters. Several properties of the new distribution are discussed. Based on progressive type-II censoring, six estimation methods [maximum likelihood, moments, least squares, weighted least squares and Bayes (under linear-exponential and general entropy loss functions) estimations] are used to estimate the involved parameters. The performance of these methods is investigated through a simulation study. The Bayes estimates are obtained using Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm. In addition, confidence intervals, symmetric credible intervals and highest posterior density credible intervals of the parameters are obtained. Finally, an application to a real data set is used to compare the new distribution with other five distributions.  相似文献

This paper considers the multiple comparisons problem for normal variances. We propose a solution based on a Bayesian model selection procedure to this problem in which no subjective input is considered. We construct the intrinsic and fractional priors for which the Bayes factors and model selection probabilities are well defined. The posterior probability of each model is used as a model selection tool. The behaviour of these Bayes factors is compared with the Bayesian information criterion of Schwarz and some frequentist tests.  相似文献

We analyse a hierarchical Bayes model which is related to the usual empirical Bayes formulation of James-Stein estimators. We consider running a Gibbs sampler on this model. Using previous results about convergence rates of Markov chains, we provide rigorous, numerical, reasonable bounds on the running time of the Gibbs sampler, for a suitable range of prior distributions. We apply these results to baseball data from Efron and Morris (1975). For a different range of prior distributions, we prove that the Gibbs sampler will fail to converge, and use this information to prove that in this case the associated posterior distribution is non-normalizable.  相似文献

In this study, we propose a prior on restricted Vector Autoregressive (VAR) models. The prior setting permits efficient Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling from the posterior of the VAR parameters and estimation of the Bayes factor. Numerical simulations show that when the sample size is small, the Bayes factor is more effective in selecting the correct model than the commonly used Schwarz criterion. We conduct Bayesian hypothesis testing of VAR models on the macroeconomic, state-, and sector-specific effects of employment growth.  相似文献

In this article we propose a new method to select a discrete model f(x; θ), based on the conditional density of a sample given the value of a sufficient statistic for θ. The main idea is to work with a broad family of discrete distributions, called the family of power series distribution, for which there is a common sufficient statistic for the parameter of interest. The proposed method uses the maximum conditional density in order to select the best model.

We compare our proposal with the usual methodology based on Bayes factors. We provide several examples that show that our proposal works fine in most instances. Bayes factors are strongly dependent on the prior information about the parameters. Since our method does not require the specification of a prior distribution, it provides a useful alternative to Bayes factors.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article builds classical and Bayesian testing procedures for choosing between non nested multivariate regression models. Although there are several classical tests for discriminating univariate regressions, only the Cox test is able to consistently handle the multivariate case. We then derive the limiting distribution of the Cox statistic in such a context, correcting an earlier derivation in the literature. Further, we show how to build alternative Bayes factors for the testing of nonnested multivariate linear regression models. In particular, we compute expressions for the posterior Bayes factor, the fractional Bayes factor, and the intrinsic Bayes factor.  相似文献
