Using multivariate rank sum tests to evaluate effectiveness of computer applications in teaching business statistics

Arguments about using computer facilities in classroom teaching have received a lot of attention over time. Using the computer facilities will be helpful to demonstrate real-world applications, while poor data or inappropriate case studies might hinder the applications of the computer programs in classroom teaching. In this paper, we examine the impacts that using computer programs to teach business statistics have on students in the Krannert School of Management at Purdue University. The results show that students are attracted to the interactive computer programs designed for the business statistics course, and students are more motivated to attend classes when computer programs are applied in teaching. Furthermore, computer programs help students to understand confusing topics, and students feel that teaching them to use computer facilities really improves their own abilities to apply similar programs in analyzing real-world problems.     

Extreme statistics from the cosine distribution

The cosine distribution serves as a very good teaching example for which exact moment properties of extreme order statistics can be expressed in terms of elementary functions. This article presents the limiting joint distribution of the extreme order statistics for the cosine distribution. It is shown that burrows'(1986) result is a special case of the result presented in this article.     

Some Remarks on Statistical Education

A definition of the subject of statistics is given, and the difference between the chalkboard world of the teacher of statistics and the real world of the experimenter is stressed. An overemphasis on significance testing, hypothesis testing, and decision procedures has led to a de-emphasis of statistical design. The teaching of statistical design theory, statistics teaching in a changing world, the importance of model building, and different approaches to teaching statistics are discussed. Some published materials developed to meet teaching needs and a new type of statistics course are described. Information about special issues in statistical education (teaching and consulting) is presented.

Statistical Computing Packages: Some Words of Caution

Three situations are cited when caution is needed in using statistical computing packages: (a) when analyzing data and having insufficient statistical knowledge to completely understand the output; (b) when teaching the use of packages in a statistics course, to the exclusion of teaching statistics; and (c) when using packages in subject-matter teaching, without teaching the statistical methods underlying the packages.

Today, this means teaching them about Bayesian methods. In this article, I present ideas on teaching an undergraduate Bayesian course that uses Markov chain Monte Carlo and that can be a second course or, for strong students, a first course in statistics.

The article discusses the phenomenon that statistical profession is not paid great attention to and even not understood by the public. Through some examples of social activity, teaching and statistical application the author proposes some measures and thinking that can take to improve public awareness to the cause of statistics through three forms of efforts including changing the public’s sense of statistics, actively spreading the techniques of applied statistics and strengthening propaganda to statistics.
