Consumer discount store patronage preferences for apparel are investigated using the concept of perceived risk. Apparel items are assigned a type and level of risk: low social, low economic; high social, low economic; and high social, high economic. Females (N=222) responding to a mail survey rate their willingness to purchase each item in a discount store on a scale ofprefer to buy, may buy, ornever buy. Results suggest that consumer preference for purchasing in discount stores declines more sharply when economic risk increases than when social risk increases.Teresa A. This is the narrative of a Brazilian PhD candidate during the first four months of COVID‐19 in Brazil. Her trajectory and feelings are expressed in evocative autoethnographic format, juxtaposed with the main feminist debates and concerns taking place in Brazil during the pandemic. As scenario, an unprecedented worldwide sanitary crisis and local economic, political and social crises, challenging activists, feminists and the researcher herself in posing new questions to understand the world, her country and herself during/after crises. Her own feminist lenses cannot read ‘New Normal’ comfortably. 相似文献

The study investigates factors associated with the individual intentions to change the family financial situation of 337 farm respondents. The hypotheses are that intentions to change are influenced by (a) resource flexibility or constraints existing at the time of the decision situation, including off-farm employment, education, age, and household size, and (b) perceptual factors of perceived income adequacy, locus of control, degree of discrepancy between standard and level of the family financial situation, and dissatisfaction or satisfaction with the discrepancy. Older respondents and those experiencing more external control are less likely to intend to change. Younger respondents and those who perceive their incomes as more adequate are more likely to perceive that they have control over their situation. The lower the perceived income adequacy, the greater the discrepancy between standard and level of the family financial situation and the lower the satisfaction with the discrepancy. Significant indirect effects were consistent with theoretical expectations.Research was supported by the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station Projects 52-055, 52-054, and 52-058 and the Minnesota Extension Service. The Coping Response Indices developed by Billings and Moos (1984a) are frequently used in stress research in the social science
and clinical fields. These indices were originally developed in a clinical setting using a conceptual process rather than
psychometric methods. This study investigates the factorial structure of the Coping Response Indices scale using a nonclinical
sample. Principal components analysis with varimax rotation yields three distinct dimensions within the scale. Considerable
support is found for the conceptualization of the Coping Response Indices, as proposed by Billings and Moos. There is also
some indication, however, that the conceptualization and measurement of the indices need further revision and testing, especially
if they are to be used in social science research.

Quality and quantity: Reconstructing feminist methodology 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Many feminist sociologists have rejected quantitative in favor of qualitative methods, a position which might seem justified
by feminist critiques of positivism. This paper examines both quantitative and qualitative methods in light of two major themes
in radical feminist epistemology, the critique of objectivity and the politics of the research process, and finds both classes
of methods vulnerable. We argue that underlying the argument against quantitative methods is a rejection of abstraction and
a dichotomization of methodologies, both of which are inconsistent with feminist insights. We call for a reconstruction of
methodology that transforms both quantitative and qualitative techniques in ways informed by feminist epistemology and builds
research agendas that integrate both approaches.
Her main research interests are in the development of social measures of gender and in the study of the impact of gender and
class on consciousness.
Her research concerns medical knowledge, social organization, and the health and well-being of women. 相似文献

In Korea, family policy as a public policy gained interest in the 1980s, when the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs (since January 1995 the Ministry of Health and Welfare) renamed the Maternal and Child Bureau the Family Welfare Bureau. This paper first presents a brief overview of the traditional family system and values in Korea and examines changes in economic and social indicators, changes in family functions and roles, and changes in attitudes toward family that have occurred following industrialization and urbanization. The paper then briefly explains some of the problems Korean families face today. It next examines the Family Planning Program and its results. Finally, it turns to an examination and critique of the policies and programs administered by the Family Welfare Bureau.Yeonoak Baik is a Family Advocacy Therapist for the 8th U.S. Army c/o Commander, 43rd Surgical Hospital (MA), ATTN: EAMC-SH-FAP, Room D-108, Unit #15190, APO AP, 96271-0126. By focusing on formal intensive interview research, this essay explores how the sociohistorical context influences the routine
procedures by which sociologists obtained permission to conduct their studies. We examine the permissions process within the
specific historical context of the 1950s and contrast it with contemporary issues of informed consent. The need for a more
theoretical and situational understanding of permissions is identified, both in regard to human—subjects regulations and social
control.

Elana Dykewomon's 1974 novel, Riverfinger Women, was among the first lesbian books with a “happy ending.” Her seven books of fiction and poetry include the Lambda Award winner Beyond the Pale (now an audio and e-book) and Lambda nominee, Risk. She was an editor of the lesbian-feminist journal, Sinister Wisdom, for eight years. Her literary work foregrounds the lesbian heroic as integral to women's communities. As a social justice activist, she has organized and participated in anti-war, anti-racist, anti-classist, fat and disability rights work since the 1970s. She is now working with Old Lesbians Organizing for Change. She is happy to live embedded in dyke community as a lesbian radical committed to a loving justice. While she suffered psychiatric abuse at 13 (and acknowledges long-term adaptive behavior on that account), she has not experienced disabling mental illness since. Her primary disabilities are mobility impairment through severe, progressive arthritis and constant low-to-powerful pain, sometimes diagnosed as fibromyalgia. Her acute illnesses include pancreatitis and a rare-in-adults kidney disease currently in remission. 相似文献

This paper reviews the work of Professor Selma Fraiberg who became a leading figure in the field of infant mental health.
Born in 1918 she first received an MSW in Social Work and then undertook her Analytic Training in Detroit Michigan. While
she maintained her identity as a social worker throughout her life, she integrated insights from the fields of social work,
psychoanalysis and developmental and ego psychology in her research and practice. This paper traces her development as a clinician,
researcher, and educator. Three cases describe her ability to integrate social work methodologies with analytic insights.
The cases describe the treatment of a latency age child at a time of social change, a clinical research study of the developmental
risk of children blind from birth, and a groundbreaking study in the field of infant mental health. Her study of infants at
developmental risk focused on the parent /infant relationship and parents were included in the treatment process so that they
could become more attuned to their young child. Her work highlighted the intergenerational issues that shaped the parental
capacity for empathic nurturance between parent and child. The article Ghosts in the Nursery incorporated the major theoretical concepts of the new theoretical approach to treatment and is still much read in graduate
programs today. Although extensive new research has added to the field of infant mental health, her contributions are still
relevant to research and practice today. 相似文献

The study of family policy in the United States began relatively recently. The academic community increasingly has shown interest
in this new policy arena. Much of the conceptual writing on family policy emerged from disciplines such as family studies,
social work, political science, economics, and sociology. These academic units have recently modified their course curricula
to include more family policy content. These family policy education efforts are discussed in this article. Specific suggestions
are made concerning the development and content of family policy education, broader educational training for those who want
to pursue a career in family policy, and future goals and directions for family policy education.
She received her Ph. D. in Human Development and Family Studies from The Pennsylvania State University. Her research interests
are in the family and health policy arenas, with particular focus on ethnically diverse populations. Her most recent research
is on homeless children and mothers.
She received her Ph.D. in Family Social Science from the University of Minnesota. Her teaching and research interests are
workplace and family issues and family policy and impact analysis. 相似文献

The principles of critical science for policy research are outlined and one research project is used as a case study. The
study was intentionally designed to facilitate changes that would positively influence the economic well-being of children
from divorced families. The project uses the critical science processes of public dialogue about child support guidelines
for purposes of collaborative problem solving. The normative theories of procedural and distributive justice are used to guide
the research reporting. The project contributes to changes in the practices of estimating the income needs of children, changes
in estimating the relative monetary contributions of their parents, and proposed legislation and modifications in the state
child support guidelines.

Building an Institution Second to None: Dr. Inabel Burns Lindsay—A Social Work Leader in the Academy
Ruby M. Gourdine DSW Sandra Edmonds Crewe PhD Annie W. Brown DSW 《Journal Of Human Behavior In The Social Environment》2013,23(3):364-391
ABSTRACT This article describes Dr. Inabel Burns Lindsay's leadership as the founding dean at Howard University School of Social Work during her 30 years of service from 1937 to 1967. It chronicles her efforts to build the School as well as her efforts to highlight social injustices of the time. Her lifelong efforts promoted the inclusion of African American social workers in the workforce and the need to understand sociocultural factors in working with different ethnic and racial groups. As a female dean, Dr. Lindsay was an avid promoter of social justice and a prolific writer and speaker on the topic. This article introduces the reader to this under-recognized social work pioneer, with emphases on the challenges of her time and her leadership style. 相似文献

I attempt to show how my ideas about bureaucracy and Mexican American culture are a product of my life history and how I worked
out key features of these ideas in teaching sociology at a small university. This was made possible because strategic sponsors
helped me as an “outsider” to become a kind of “insider” within that social milieu.
Her fields of interest are bureaucracy, family, social psychology and race and ethnic relations. She is currently writing
a monograph on Mexican American family life. 相似文献

Natalie Allon was one of the pioneers in the sociological analysis of obesity and dieting, and a consistent voice on the topic in the 1970s. Her contributions to the study of the obese are reviewed in this paper. As an ethnographer who used participant observation and unstructured interviewing to examine organized dieting groups, she provided insight into the structure and function of these groups. She showed how group dieting was a form of religious ritual for the participants, as well as performing the latent function of providing social support. Her analysis of the stigma of obesity examined stigmatization of fatness in four areas: as sin, as disease, as crime, and as ugliness. Work on overweight adolescents showed that they had problems in social interaction. Because obesity often served as the exclusive focus of interaction, it overwhelmed others with mixed emotions, it clashed with positive attributes of a person, and it was an uncertain predictor of joint activity. Negative self image and a mixture of self responsibility for fatness and the negation of responsibility were related to actual weight loss. Allon's analyses provide us with a basis for further sociological analysis of obesity and dieting. 相似文献

This article reviews data on childhood injury and explains how unintentional injuries have become the leading health problem
for young children in the United States and a major health problem in teenage years. The article discusses the major types
of childhood injuries, trends over time, and variations by location and social, behavioral, and familial risk factors. Results
of epidemiological and sociobehavioral research on injury are followed by a discussion of policy considerations in the attempts
to deal with childhood injury and its consequences. This includes a discussion of major ways to prevent injuries, a review
of government activities, and recommendations for future efforts.

Designated an early pragmatist, Jane Addams has significantly inspired contemporary pragmatist research. However, Addams also consistently articulated ideas harking to primordial Christianity and sought inspiration in the social gospel of her time. This article explores how Addams’ writing resonated with key tenets of social gospel theology, which imbued her texts with an overarching vision of humanity’s progressive history. It is suggested that Addams’ vision of a major transition in industrial society, one involving a “Christian renaissance” and individuals’ transformation into “socialized selves”, constitutes a political eschatology. Of particular interest is how Addams conceived the relationship between the individual and society, inventing the term “new social ethics” to reconcile the difficult balance between individual autonomy and social solidarity. The article suggests some ways in which Addams’ writings relate to contemporary issues such as individualism, neo-conservatism, and militarism. Her social thought constitutes a thus far under-examined source of sociological critique in regard to such issues of public concern. 相似文献

In this paper we explore the intersection of the modern-state and fieldwork practices within the social sciences. Our contention
is that during the past decade or so there has been an expansion in forbidden or restricted research terrain that threatens
the present and future conduct of social research. We argue that this restriction has been engendered by two related developments:
privatization and human subjects regulations. The social and political implications of these trends are considered.
